Well do they? I saw an old scetch of them dressed in trech coats and dark glasses, playing pool, Don taking his shot had a cigar in his mouth. Does that mean what I think it means? I hope not.

I'll bet that was some kind of spoof or something...maybe from the old comic days...I dunno :-?

Was this picture on the official site in the fan art winners? I think there was a fan who drew a black and white picture of the turtles smoking cigars while playing pool. This was a while back so it would probably be on one of the early pages.

I don't think they have ever smoked... Raph does spend time in Bar in volume 4 though.

No.. the Turtles don't really smoke. And with cigars, it's easy to have those around, but not lit. :P

It is true in the Mirage comics, Raph at least does have a liking for beer. He asked April if she had some too the first time she invited them into her apartment too.

Bond's smoking was really more in the 60's when it was fasionable to do so. He's pretty much given it up now.

There was also that short little costume party story, where they ended up going as 'themselves' and one of them (I'd already assumed it was Raph and now I'm sure of it) asked if someone would get him a beer or something like that.

Yep, but it appears to be an actual comic done by Eastman and Laird. It's called "Don't judge a Book..." By Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Copyright 1985 Mirage Studios. In it the turtles get dressed to go to April's Halloween Party. Mikey as a sideshow Pinhead, Leonardo as a Lil Old Lady, Raphael as a Punk Rocker, and Donatello as an Alien (From the 20th Century Fox Movie). They basically have a run in with some gang members who are trying to rob the 'Second Time Around' Antique Store, before they can get to the party, and get their costumes destroyed. So they show up as themselves to the party, and get compliments on their costumes. And I agree, I believe it's Raph that asks April for the Beer. Just by his attitude. :)

Ok I know nothing about the turtles smoking but that James Bond thing; didn't he smoke just to fit in or help his 'cover'? Plus cigars can be smoked on and off really (like at least once a month) so it's not really a regular thing like with cigarette cravings. At least that's how I see it

Plus, wasn't that the first time he smoked in years? And he used to smoke like, 20 cigs a movie, 1/2 a cigar isn't that bad in comparrison.

Yeah, the RPG book also has part of the first issue in it...I'll have to look at the official page to see where "Don't judge a book," was originaly printed before it was in the rpg book, TMNT and Other Strangeness.

EDIT: It was in Shell Shock, but that was after 1985...and it's deffinetly an Eastman and Laird original (and I want this book @.@) http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/books/shellshock/shellshock.htm

In the new toon, Raph sounds like someone who's spent their life smoking too many cigs, which I find funny. But I love his voice though..

It wouldn't shock me if the TMNTs took up smoking and drinking as a regular habit, although I couldn't see Leo doing it. He just seems way too sensible and uptight to spend his time getting stoned and wasted.

Turtles and smoking:

well, for one thing, it would royally mess up their fighting abilities. It slowly destroys the lungs, making any sort of strenuous exercise impossible without asthma troubles, or the like. I dont think any of them would like throat/mouth/lung Cancer, or lose the ability of using their voice.

Also...you think they WANT Splinter to jump all over them about that?! Jeez, if they did that, alcohol, or any sort of narcotics, Splinter would beat them like a bad monkey! He's not gonna let them do this learning and training for so many years, and then kill their lung capacity within a few months!

MW8979

Unless....they share some of the said "alcohol/narcotics" with him. I'm sure he'll OK it then. He he, can't tell me seeing a wasted Splinter wouldn't be hilarious. And four drunk turtles too. If you think Raphael is mean sober, I can only imagine what kind of cruel tricks he'd pull on people drunk.

I suppose smoking would effect their athletic abilities, but smokers who excercise regularly, and smokers who started smoking later in life (like myself) usually have fully functioning lung capacity for a longer period of time. Also, not all smokers are constant smokers. Maybe the turtles just have a cigarette on occassion, with a nice glass of Scotch? Moderate use of ANY drug never hurt anyone and all cultures have developed drugs to help them cope with this insane world, including many warrior-cultures like the peyote-smoking native american tribes on the Western United States.

I just think we shouldn't be so judgmental of the smokers. I mean, if you love the turtles, then you'll still love them even if you learn they have a few bad habits. I mean, these are guys who live in a sewer afterall, and that is a pretty dirty and unhealthy place to live. The amount of mold spores and e. coli present in their systems has to be at an extremely dangerous level, what's a little smoke next to the raw sewage flowing through their kitchen?

On the other hand, I don't really care if they smoke or not, and they probably don't, but still.

There's been a TMNT cigarette lighter spotted on eBay a few times. The person who caught it was like, "Are the TMNT trying to influence people to smoke?" Nooo, only the people in the tobacco industry and the people who make those lighters!

K, there is some mention of smoking in one of my fics. I had Raph smoke in "Nocturnal Creatures." Why? I dunno. Guess I was trying to prove a point with it, especially when I took the story in a certain direction of showing the readers how smoking can kill. I for one can't stand it. I've tried it a few times by taking puffs off of others but I will never, ever smoke. It's disgusting.

i did have once a picture of raph by the nigth smoking, he said something like "everything clear" i don't have it anymore cuz my brother has reformate his pc several times and it was there

That's not cigarette smoke, that's his warm breath against the cold air. Like, when it's really really cold outside and you puff out and can see your own breath? Believe me, I've used such a thing in my "N.C." fic, saying something about everyone else's breath was clear, Raph's was full of nicotine! I like this little interaction between him and Shadow from the same fic. Must have been on something when I wrote it:

"You smell smoky."

"I had a cigarette."

"What for?"

"So, that I won't pound your Uncle Leo."

"Why would you do that?"

"Cuz he makes me angry at times."

"The cigett make you happy?"

"Sort of. It calms me down."

"Are you calm now?"

"I'm chillin.'"

"I'm cold, too." He couldn't help but smile to that. "What else make you happy?"

His smile got wider. "Pounding your Uncle Leo, anyway."

"My dolls make me happy."

"Yeah, they should make Bad Mood Barbie and have her be able to smoke a cigarette. I'd definitely buy that and we'd smoke together."

At least pipes (non-nicotine) don't stink so bad, or any other drug for that matter. Nicotine (cigs) just smell so bad! The Turtles live in a sewer so they will try to keep the stink to a minimum. Allowing nicotine smoke in that enclosed area could cause some major smell problems. Plus how would the Turtles buy them. Will they waste all the money they rarley get or steal them? No, smoking just won't work with any good guy.

I have seen the turles smoke and drink in the old comics. But I think that is cool. When you are engaged in a life or death battle everyday, what harm is some booze and 'baccy? Booze would be good for them because they would meditate on the meaning of the universe more. Smokes would be good cause, well, they are just good. good, and good for ya. Take it from me, kids, smoking is cool and everyone who is cool should smoke. It is like cars. If you have a fancy car, then people know you are better than them cause you are rich. If you have an old beater, people know you are not as good as them. Smoking is the same thing. Strangers can see you and say "Wow. He is cool. I think that if he asked me out, I totally would go out with him". or they say other good things. The point is, you cant go wrong smoking. As far as health is concerned, I dont buy that it is bad for you. it is like prohibition in the 20's. It was all these housewives, with nothing better to do that spearheaded the movement. All these women were mad that their husbands were having a good time. So, they wanted alcohol illegal so that the men had to stay home and hear them yap all night long. So, today, all these people are like "I dont want you to have fun. So, we will make it out that cigs kill, blah, blah, blah." If they were bad for you, they would be illegal, like crack or absinth. One more little thing. In these days of international scary things, patriotism is a must. We must all show that we are not afraid and that we treasure our freedom. Our freedom to drink. Our freedom to smoke. Our freedom to tell weak countries what to do. So I say to you friends, light it em up, and hold em high. Let freedom ring.

Savanti Romero

Interesting point of view. If the Turtles did these wouldn't they become addicted? While on drugs or under the influence their actions could become out of their control. Not to mention slowed reaction times which could really hurt a NINJA's skill. Drinking for Raph probably isn't good either. Raph is already a hot-head so if he gets drunk, it is likely he could become uncontrollable.

i live in a tropical area so how should i know . . . . , have you seen the picture i'm talking about? hopefully you're rightI recognize the description. It was in Mirage Vol. 1 number #11 called "True Stories," considered one of my favorites. The four turtles, April, and Casey, were presently at Casey's grandmother's farmhouse in Northampton Mass. after their Christmas get-together was rudely interrupted by the Foot and Shredder.

Raph, still feeling they should keep their guard up, stood watch on top of the barn. The weather can be rather chilly at night during early March in that eastern state, so that's why you see his breath like that. He says, "All quiet on the front..." while looking over the grounds below. Then, he bends down, does several flips upon the very narrow roof, gets toward the back and goes, "...back, too." Love it!

*sighs*

None of the TMNT have ever been shown smoking or alluded that they smoke in any "canonical" Mirage storyline.

The only turtle that has actually demonstrated that he drinks is Raphael. By extension, one could say that they all *might* drink but there is really only "proof" that Raph does it.

And, that's the way it is, as far as anybody knows.

People always ask similar questions such as these, trying to "relate" the TMNT to popular American culture somehow.

I think what needs to be realized is that they were raised by a Japanese. Their religion is not Christian, it is probably some form of Buddhism/Taoism. The TMNT, although influenced by American media and what they have obseved in New Yorkers, have decidedly Japanese values and worldviews. Its probably better to think of them as Japanese-Americans. It should be remembered they were raised in relative isolation from the outside world, with the only interaction with other sentient beings being with Splinter and themselves.

Nor is it likely that they smoke and drink; smoking and drinking are largely established because of social settings and the colloquial "peer pressure". Both of these environments, however, are alien to the TMNT as the only "peers" they have are themselves. Its *very* unlikely that they would risk exposure for the sake of stealing some booze and cigs.

How about bumming off of bums? The guys do go on countless outings on the streets and they usually travel among the dwellings of homeless people. A street bum could have easily offered Raph a quick drink and that would have been love at first taste for him.

Actually in the episode "The Maltese Hamster", the turtles are all wearing trenchcoats and Don is narrarating in his 20's Chicago accent and they have cigars in their mouths, (maybe only Don). Perhaps they only smoke once every 15 years.

Okay, I sat through the entire episode from beginning to end and never once saw any of the TMNT with a cigar. Are you sure you got the right episode? Might have just been seeing things. I seriously doubt they would show one or all of the TMNT smoking a cigar on a kid's show.

The Turtles don't need any of that (drugs, smoking, etc...). They live incredible lives and don't have time for it. I have things to do most of the time (like the snowboarding season coming up and more tennis at an indoor "bubble", SHELL YEA) and I don't use drugs, never used a nicotine product or alcohol and still don't need it in my life. I would like to believe the Turtles don't either other than the occasional examples (like Raph in #12 vol.4). :D

What? I could have sworn they did, you might have a different version or something, since it was season 3 and that was when most of the changes did begin to happen. And no, I never said I would like them to smoke, if they did Shredder would have beaten them every time.

Leo656

That's not *entirely* true. I mean look at all the athletes that smoke, drink, do drugs, and still perform. Dennis Rodman was, for a time, considered one of the best players in basketball, and if the way Hulk Hogan describes him in his book is true, Rodman's a huge alcoholic and probably dabbles in some other stuff as well. His problem was that he let his excesses become more important to him than anything else. And then there's Allen Iverson and all the other NBA players who keep getting caught with pot, a few Olympic-level gymnasts got caught with it a couple years ago... the list goes on.

That's not to say I advocate the use of these things, because I don't. But to say that anyone who drinks or smokes is suddenly going to become feeble and lose their ability to do anything strenuous is false. These substances ARE harmful, and partaking of them in excess WILL do serious damage. But for a person who doesn't do it very much, and who still gets regular exercise, the negative impact would not be very great.

I don't think the Turtles would smoke, but if any of them did it would likely be Raph. Drinking, I *could* see all of them drinking once in a while, with Raph being again most likely and Leo being the least likely.

Yeah, I know. I guess that's why I had Raph smoke in my fic. Of all of them, I can see him smoking the most, starting up when the holidays are just around the corner. Don, on the other hand, smoked in Phish's incredible fic "Apocrypha" and with the way he was so stressed out, I could understand why. In fact, I'd say any of them would smoke if they really wanted to.

Alcohol is different, more soothing and enjoyable. I can picture Splinter sippin' on a small cup of sake in his room, Michaelangelo whipping up a fruity margarita in the kitchen, Leo having a glass of wine before dinner, or Don enjoying a Bailey's by his computer. And we all know Raph's down-time would involve a cold brewsky. I'm not saying this would happen at the same time! But, hey, if they're anything like us, then I believe they will have moments like that. Hell, I'll bet April and Casey like to have a drink, too! As long as you drink responsibly, there's not a damn thing wrong with it!

Truth be told, those drinks actually do match the turtles pretty well.

I think I have seen the turtles smoke, but I dont think they should. Kids watch these shows and may pick up bad habits.

The point is that, prior until the time they might Casey and April, the TMNT would *not* have risked exposure and endangered their family just to try beer and cigarettes (or even marijuana) out.

After they started living with April, though... who knows.

Okay, okay, that part I get with them not drinking and smoking on the show because the kids are watching. I'm just saying they would probably like to do it when no one is watching! Ya know? Like ever see The Truman Show? Um, I didn't, but knew what it was about. Our lives aren't viewed 24/7, so you could get away with a whole lot! Let's say our fictional pals do that stuff when no one's looking. The public viewing on TV (as in the live cameras) won't show it, but us fic writers could write it in if we felt like it. We're not cameras. We're real life!

*is very sick this morning...level with me on this*

I could see the turtles smoke or drink on occasion. Esp. Raph, Brina's right on that one. Geez you got it so organzied as to who'd be doing what there Brina, lol! I could also see Raph doing weed or something similar. Not that I'd condone it, but still he's just the type who would.
