View Full Version : Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.

I've heard that because nunchakus were banned in the UK, Peter Laird & Kevin Eastman had to make two versions of the Ninja Turtles show, they even had to rename it Hero Turtles, not Ninja Turtles. As Michelangelo's weapon of choice was banned in the UK, they replaced it with a grapple hook. Is this true? Just rumours is all I've heard.
Karpo_007
11-09-2003, 03:27 AM
True, but it hasn't got anything to do with Eastman and Laird, and the name was changed because Ninja was a banned word in UK.
Misfit

It was changed because the ridiculously over sensitive UK censors thought the word "ninja" was too violent, ditto with the 'chunks.

It is okay for the uk to not let the citizens have or talk about weapons. First of all, state sponsered violence is not bad. It is good. When a country attacks people, it is good. but, people attacking other people is bad. Hence the ban on chucks and the legality of nukes. Also, those brits are so drunk all the time, they would use these weapons on each other. could be messy, and you run the risk of losing taxpayers.

Well...it's not like you can prevent kids seeing swords in films/cartoons/TV shows at some point or other. Nunchukus are different, no British kids had ever heard of them pre-Turtlemania.
Also, nunchuks are funnier weapons. Hitting people is less messy and therefore more comical than stabbing/slashing them, in my opinion. So kids are more likely to wanna mess around with them, maybe.
What bugs me is the sais were left in...I mean all the other weapons have non-injuring uses. What can you do with a sai besides stab people?

*chuckles* Well, that has more to do with a lack of research on the part of certain writers than anything else. This is why they also call Leo's swords "katana" when they are actually ninja-to.
Cutting and stabbing, though?? A pointed sai is one thing, but a bladed one?? Very very odd.....
Karpo_007
11-10-2003, 01:00 PM
Yes you can make cut wounds with pointed metal objects, but natrually not very deep.
heretic888
11-10-2003, 01:06 PM
Yes, but those aren't actually cuts but more like rips or tears.
In any event, sai were indeed Japanese weapons and were blunt. They were specifically designed to be anti-sword truncheons (i.e., blunt ass-whippin' device), the pronges used to pin a sword blade in place.

you are right that they are pretty much blunt and are used to stop swords, but so what? cant raph sharpen his? also, if you were to throw a real sai, it would dig in but good. But ya know, you are all trying to tell everyone all the funky little ninja things you know, but what you arent telling people is that warriors of japan took liberties with their weapons. Many people would study in a certain school, and then create their own fighting techniques and even invent weapons. So, just chill on you high hill friend. I don't see why he'd bother. If he wanted a stabbing instrument, there are other more useful weapons... like, oh say, a knife. If we are talking about accuracy here, I'd say Raph can stab people with his sai because of his exceptional strength not because it is pointed.
also, if you were to throw a real sai, it would dig in but good.
Not unless you have the strength of 5 normal men.
But ya know, you are all trying to tell everyone all the funky little ninja things you know, but what you arent telling people is that warriors of japan took liberties with their weapons. *chuckles* No, I am stating facts. This is what a sai was. If Raph and/or Splinter "took liberties" then fine. But, the fact remains that sai were not pointed weapons.

I've read somewhere that Leo's swords were Daisho (a katana and a wakizashi). I mean what kind of ninja fights using TWO katana? One is heavy as HELL.

Wrong. I'm correcting false information. It would like if you said "the world is flat, you know". I simply reply, "Umm... not quite." Why?? Because your spewing erroneous information, plain and simple.
The problem with the kind of thinking above is that because somebody thinks their precious little ego holds onto a false conception of the world that that somehow means their views shouldn't be questioned or confronted. I'm sorry if you emotionally believe the world is flat, but it just isn't so. The same goes for a lot of the BS I've been correcting lately.
Try and keep an open mind.
Umm, isn't that exactly what you're doing? You can't bash him for doing the same thing you do.
Oh, he can, Kali. He'll just be a hypocrite, that's all. I mean, there's nothing stopping him for criticizing me for all the wrong reasons.
I've read somewhere that Leo's swords were called Daisho.
That was in the Palladium RPG. That is also incorrect, though. A daisho is the traditional pair of samurai swords consisting of a katana and a wakizashi. Leo has neither, however. The length and design of the blades are decidedly that of a ninja-to.

Like this:
It takes approx. 8 pounds of presure to break a human bone.
A pair of nunchucks in the hands of a master can potentialy generate approx. 80 pounds of presure.
Do the math. I don't know about you, but given the choice I'd much rather be run through with a sword than have my skull bashed to bits.
Aside from that, gangs use nunchucks. Not swords. So in some circles showing nunchucks on a children's show is glorifiying gang lifestyle. Not saying that I agree with that, but that's the way some people think.
That's why Mikey didn't use nunchucks on The Next Mutation. He used tonfas, which I think are pretty cool weapons. (By the way, if me saying this causes this thread to become another whiny "I hate The Next Mutation thread, I'll have to destroy you all).

Ok I will. It seems as though you don't sometimes. When someone presents information in this forum, you correct it.
That is because most of the "information" you are referring to is wrong. I'm sorry, but contrary to the contentions of extreme postmodernism, just because you believe something doesn't make it empirically true.
Lots of your information is very useful and benefits me to know. At times, you seem to give info just to contradict somone.
No, I give out correct facts to correct misinformation.
This isn't some nebulous or controversial "Is there a God??" debate here. Its simple history. Sai are not sharpened. The design for Leonardo's swords (based on length and the design of the tsuba) is that of a ninja-to. Ninja can't hold their breath for four hours.
If you have a problem with all of this, then you very simply have a problem with reality.
You automatically assume your information is correct and other info is wrong.
No, I know from firsthand experience my information is correct. Most of the information spouted on here comes from misconceptions and fictional sources.
That isn't exactly open mindeness, is it? Or maybe you could correct my definition of an open mind.
*shrugs* Depends on your definition, really.
Your definition of having an "open mind" seems to really be "no one is more 'right' or 'correct' than another, there are no 'facts' in the world. Thus, no one can tell me what to do for I cannot be 'wrong' about anything". I hate to break this to you but, as a psychology major, that entire view reaks of egotism (i.e. "NOBODY CAN TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!" because "I AM ALWAYS RIGHT!!" --- pure narcissism through and through).
If you actually think I'm wrong about the ninja-to or sai, I suggest providing sources that say the contrary instead of whining about how I'm hurting your little egocentric feelings.
Like this:

I have some 'Hero Turtles' eps on avi that I downloaded. And being used to the American version, it was weird to see how Mikey's chucks were deliberately taken out, or censored out. Or small scenes were cut when he was using them *trust me I know the show that well, episode by epidsode* Of course I also recorded most of the ep's on USA when they were still running it, but you know the notorous USA Network liked to cut out little scenes here and there (not censored out tho, they did it to save time). So when I got all the eps on avi, some were American (ninja turtles), some were European (hero turtles). And of course since this person who made these avi's was lucky enuff not to record the show from USA Network, all the cut scenes that USA Network cut out were in them. But at teh same time, on some of the Hero TUrtles eps I got, had the 'chuck' scenes and utterances of the word 'ninja' cut out. So its like trading a headache for an upset stomach. But at least somewhere I'm able to see both versions of the show with the USA Network-cut scenes, and with the all the 'chucks' and words of 'ninja.'

Just to add fuel to the fire, I have to say I agree with Heretic about the sais. They're just not practical stabbing weapons (although they can be used for that purpose, as Raph has repeatedly proven). The two side prongs make the thrusting necessary to stab harder, can actually prevent the main prong from doing it properly, and make the weapon harder to retrieve after stabbing, making doing so dangerous in battle. Slashing, on the other hand, is out of the question. The weapon has no sharp end which it can do that.
Now that that's been said, that makes Leo the only one in the new cartoon who can't use his weapon properly (thanks to the big bad sensors), and whatdaya know? He has, in a big way. Cool.
BTW, first post.

I went and saw some real sais at this weapon store in my mall and they were dull as well. I wanted to buy them, but as usual, I don't have money for that kinda stuff. :(
