View Full Version : Times you felt like your intelligence was insulted in TMNT media?

Self-explanatory title, I guess.

In FW:

- Middle aged and old short and skinny or fat mad scientists giving the Turtles a TON of trouble when the Turtles could easily mop the floor with them in a fist fight. Seeing the Turtles getting captured by a toy manufacturer named Weasel was just embarrassing. They're supposed to be the heroes of NYC. They can beat Shredder and Krang easily dozens of times but struggle at beating an old short and out of shape mad scientist that never threw a punch in his life? Not even when I was a kid could I buy that;

- Donatello being outsmarted by a family of hillbillies: ...I rest my case. It speaks for itself, really.

- Shredder talking about Leatherhead beating the Punk Frogs as if it was some impressive feat: Yeah, I don't think so.

- Making the audience believe Scumbug and Anthrax were in a previous FW episode: When I watched Night of the Rogues and saw both being introduced I immediately wondered "wtf did I miss an episode or two?!" And some years later went online to check the episode guide on the old TMNT website... and yeah, I didn't.

- Being told Mondo Gecko was there ALL ALONG: no he ****ing wasn't. BS.

- Humans mistaking the Punk Frogs for the Turtles and the crooked Turtle Gang from episode 6 as well: Even as a 6 year old kid I found that stuff insulting to my intelligence. Made me believe people got dumber after turning 18.

- Implying that Splinter took on a random student before: Black Belt, White Heart(or wtv the title of the episode was) was overall a pretty good episode, but it's pretty much implied Yoku at some point trained with Splinter and the Turtles. Again, I thought I had missed an episode or two when I first watched this episode as a kid.

- The Turtles not using their weapons much despite being ninjas: I'm not sure if this is the series fault per se or due to backlash from the media and parents back in the day. I guess by 80s standards, the FW series seemed a bit too violent compared to its contemporaries. That being said, the Turtles went back to using their weapons regularly in season 7, so who knows...

In 2k3:

Basically giving us the idea that this series was more mature and closer to Mirage and then having Mike making childish and cringeworthy jokes afterwards or Donatello building the toy of the week. Plus, it's like Mike and Raph got more flanderised as the show went on and the show eventually stopped taking itself so seriously. Other than that, I can't think of much else, really.

Mirage, from what I've read, has not insulted my intelligence yet. The 1st movie never did and I barely remember the other two anymore since it's been ages since I last saw them.

Haven't really watched the Nick show. The Next Mutation? Irrelevant. I don't even bother at getting annoyed at Venus being shoehorned in and the we're not really related!" excuse.

Platinum Dunes? Literally everything about it was an insult to me as a TMNT fan. And to think we were this close to getting a White Shredder and the Turtles being aliens and that the whole thing could be even dumber... *shudders*

What about you? What times have you felt like your intelligence was insulted in TMNT media?

Same. You beat me to it.

Every time I watch any episode of Fred Wolf or Nick TMNT, it slaps me in the face. I'm pretty sure Rise would be like smashing my own face into a brick wall.

A series has a thinned-line tight-rope to walk across, doesn't it? It has to find a middle ground of sorts. It can't take everything within itself seriously, and there are times when it should.

When there are rushed deadlines, lack of communication, script-writers that are doing everything from going on vacations to going drinking in order to get some additional ideas to keep a series going, then it is common to get the 'errors of cartoon logic.'

The rubber suits and animatronic head masks for Next Mutation were cool to look at, but I never watched the series. So, I cannot comment much about it.

OT TMNT hardly took itself seriously. TMNT'03 tried to and, I'm sure that the suits for 4Kids head-butted with the producers & directors in multiple ways. TMNT'12 was on-the-air for a station that had tightened its belt on what can be aired since shows like Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy, and the like are no longer considered acceptable.

PDMT might have been an attempt to reach out to the fans, and it ended in a train-wreck in just two movies. However, there are 'Dromers here that felt like the TMNT'90 movie series became a train-wreck just after the first movie.

A lot of Fred Wolf episodes, TMNT III, OotS and all of the Next Mutation are pretty good examples of insulting intelligence.

Because I really can't see anyone, even a moron, write down something like: "Then the ninja man brings the unexplained purple crystal to a science man, who turns it into goo and then the ninja tranqs the two unwitting morons with it, which turns them into a pig and rhino because humans totally evolved from those. Also the morons are just fine with this and does whatever the ninja tells them from now on."

And think it can't be improved.

A lot of 1987 episodes from season 2 onwards, TMNT: Secret of the Ooze, The Next Mutation, Nick 2012 and TMNT 2014. Can’t think of any others.

I agree with Prowler about ‘87.

Yeah....that has to be the primary example I would point to.

There's a lot of craziness and out-there sci-fi-ish stuff because it's the Turtles, fine. I can even happily accept the 'normal' mutations like the Turtles and Splinter (esp Yoshi as Splinter), by assuming the ooze affects their own DNA and traces of DNA from other creatures they've been in contact with. Maybe real science doesn't work like that, but for fiction at least the basic components are still accounted for and enough to sate the average viewer with a basic understanding of science.

But Bebop and Rocksteady turning into mutants based on DNA of those animals SOMEHOW being in their ancestry is too far and entirely lacks ANY explanation of how the hell it got there in the first place. For that to work they'd have had to dedicate part of a film to explaining that fact alone, not just jarringly throwing it in there and expecting it not to ruin the immersion by leaving it an absurd mystery. You would think a creationist film writer was behind it and pretending to understand evolution and clearly failed.

Going from that angle it would have only made sense if they physically devolved into something resembling a "missing link" (Big Foot?), looking a bit more ape-like but retaining a human mind. And at that point... don't use Bebop and Rocksteady for it.

As someone who thought the Bayfilms were 'aight'. It doesn't get much worse than how the mutagen was explained to work in OotS.

What makes it so awful is all they had to do was have Stockman say "I spliced in some rhino and warthog DNA" There you go.

It was ssssoooooo stupid. And this is going by standards of totally made up nonsense as the foundation.

(I edited my original post down because I thought I was going overboard).

If anything, I could see it being a "Tales of the TMNT" kind of story.

Just a one-off of somekind. Don has to go to Appalachia for some reason. He camps out on the "property" of a local hick family, and gets it in his head that they won't be a problem because he's "smarter than them". They jack his stuff to "teach him a lesson", a chase happens, he almost mistakes a copperhead snake for a tree branch. Eventually he gives in and apologises. He makes friends with one of the family young'uns and offers some basic tech lessons to boost up what little electricity they use, in exchange for survival skill lessons.

(Maybe Leatherhead is there, thinking that he'll adapt well to the environment by proxy of it being his "natural environment" and immediately has trouble adapting, because barely lived in the environment and was raised in a sterile research facility by aliens)

Season 4 in general is considered one of the weekest. Just compare it to the early episodes, when the turtles smash robots in the Technodrome without any big problems, and the problems they have with defeating the toy manufacturer's robots in Michelangelo Toys Around.

To be fair, the syndicated show and Saturday morning cartoon were 30 minute toy commercials most of the time. The intent of the first mini-series (best episodes of the program) was to sell the first wave of basic action figures and accessories in the year after it aired.

I actually have a cousin who wanted to see the allies and adversaries of the Turtles introduced from season 2 to 5 to use their weapons more. Imagine Baxter Stockman using the anti-turtle swatter in the weekday cartoon. That would have been something to see.

How about the bad guys in the Fred Wolf series having their rayguns so weakly loaded that Leonardo could use his swords to reflect the laser rays? (I think they broke in a few episodes being hit, but not often). I think even Donatello used his bo stick for that at least once or twice.

Honestly, even deep into IDW, Leo being able to cut through metal like butter with his swords is a tough pill to swallow. Especially in the Krang fights. (In that same scenario, Raph being able to puncture the face and glass shield).

That's not how swords work. That's not even a little bit how swords work. That armor's metal must be pretty sh*t if it's that easy to cut apart, and it's a wonder that Krang wasn't easily defeated a long time ago if the metal is that fragile.

(Trib being able to blow a whole arm off with a heavy gun was more reasonable...and more bad@$$)

I would have loved to see April O'Neil pull out that gun that was concealed within her camcorder. She would have been abducted less often. (It came with her action figure.)

Heck, Krang could have had a total victory if he used that Brain Drain Gun that came with the toy version of his Bubble Walker. Even Rocksteady might have been more useful if he used his knife more. (That also came with the toy.) Even Bebop could have used his trash-can shield more often. :tlol:

But, you know how people (see: parents) can get whenever weapons are used in cartoons..

Yeah. I mean this isn't QUITE as bad as stormtrooper effect but it's close. Something that happens a lot in fiction is, the more bullets are flying on screen, the less likely anyone will actually get hit.

And Swords can cut through basically anything unless the plot specifically says they can't. These are things only a few people will complain about tho. I would appreciate it more if there was a storyline where the turtles got weapon upgrades. They've already been to space, why not have a story where they forged weapons made out of rare ultra strong alien metal. Then everything they face on earth getting cut like butter would make sense.

But as it is, most readers will just go "omg rule of kewl XD"

The original cartoon is so guilty of that stuff. I wouldn't really say I feel like it insults anyone's intelligence with it, but it's one of the things that makes me laugh because there is so much of it and looking back there is a lot that is just so unintentionally funny. (And I got the DVD set for Christmas so I'm just now giving the whole thing a fresh rewatch.)

And in that series it's not even so much that a cartoon sword can slice right through steel with ease, but that there are other moments when he tries it with other materials that should be FAR easier to cut and instead he's hacking away at it.

Likewise, one I was laughing at last night, is Shredder throwing a regular little ninja star at them, it hits a bookcase and the whole thing explodes. I will never understand how non-explosive things explode in their world. :tlol: Same with Donnie whacking a piece of machinery with his bo just once and the whole thing is explodes. Things are so easily destroyed. Maybe metal is just a very weak, volatile material in their universe... lol

Speaking of the things I just said, while reading further, and looking at Splinter, Shredder, and Karai all refer to the turtles as "uncoordinated" and "lacking focus" in combat...just how were they able to fight Krang and the Rock Soldiers as closely as they did? I don't think their first encounter with literal aliens should have gone as well as it did if their skills are that bad according to the masters.

When Playmates made the "Toon" Classics figures

I think the toy makers at Playmates were feeling a little too nostalgic for Looney Tunes like parents in the 90s because of Mel Blanc’s passing, the 50th anniversary of Bugs Bunny and the popularity of the Warner Brothers catalog back then. Toon Raph and Leo are scarier than Breakfightin’ Raphael. In case you can’t tell, I’m in the camp of people that is against variants in action figure lines. I can tolerate some, but sublines of them I loathe.

Why? Because many of the figures didn't look like in the cartoon?

Well, in defense of Playmates, twenty seven years ago, technology was not as advance as it is right now. The 2017 NECA San Diego Comic Con exclusives were what children of the 90s wanted then, but the likenesses would not have been easy to achieve in those days. 1987 Fred Wolf cartoon accurate turtles, villains, and side characters would not have fit well into the 1988 original toyline at all. The toon turtles did not either.

Candy Kappa

Why? Because many of the figures didn't look like in the cartoon?

All of them don't look cartoon accurate nor like the 1988 action figures. The closest is the Turtles being more akin to the Retro art style while Bebop and Rocksteady are completely re-designed and what we saw of Shredder and Krang they where not accurate either.

The paint job was laughable as the minimal paint the figures had, Playmates managed to fumble it up with wonky eyes and Rocksteady's neck not painted. And the articulation scheme is terrible, a jumbled mess that shows that Playmates did not put care into where the articulation should go and why certain PoA works.

The whole Classics line was a cheap grab at the collectors marked without actually putting care into the product or bothering to make a good product. It was just a lazy tag-along on the "Classics" label that Mattel was doing with Masters of the Universe.

A proper Classics line should ahve been either screen accurate like NECA's 8-pack set or a modern update to the 1988 figures like Mattel did with MOTUC, we got neither, we got junk.

I think the toy makers at Playmates were feeling a little too nostalgic for Looney Tunes like parents in the 90s because of Mel Blanc’s passing, the 50th anniversary of Bugs Bunny and the popularity of the Warner Brothers catalog back then..

Not sure what this have anything to do with the Classics line...

To be fair, it doesn't show the technodrome getting outright destroyed, and I don't think it would be destroyed considering that it has survived much worse.

I like to believe that the turtles returned it back to Dimension X without the villains, and that led into season 8 of the Original Toon.

Why not 2016 and 2017 crossovers before Get Shredder?

I think its more natural that way since we don't end up with Red Sky design turtles in "Get Shredder", then 80s turtles looking like season 1-7 for the crossovers, then Red Sky turtles again for "Wrath of the Rat King".

For the 2016 crossover, Krang has lost access to the techndrome because of the events of Shredder Triumphant, but gets access to it because of Subprime's help. Then loses it again in Dimension X because of Subprime banishing him.

Then at the beginning of the 2017 crossover, Shredder and Krang get access to the technodrome again by themselves and bring it to the bottom of the earth again before it enters the Nick reality. And the end, the turtles send it back to Dimension X where its trapped in a black hole.

It would create an inconsistency however, since General Traag is shown to be trapped inside the technodrome in Wrath of the Rat King, and the last time he and the remaining Rock Soldiers were shown inside the technodrome was Shredder Triumphant.

"When the technodrome was blown back into Dimension X, it fell into a black hole. The intense gravity has kept it trapped here, and all of us inside it!" General Traag, in Wrath of the Rat King.

The only way I can creatively rectify this is to treat the Traag of 2012 from "The Big Blow-Out" as the same one from 1987, who got blown back to Dimension X at the end of the 2017 crossover, along with the technodrome.

Krang even calls the Nickelodeon Rock Soldiers as "his Rock soldiers" despite how different they look from the 1987 ones, so it seems like it was the writer's intention to have those Rock Soldiers represent the 1987 ones, but budget issues and the fact that the Rock Soldiers only appear in the last 8 minutes would've deterred them from creating new 3D models and hiring a voice actor for Traag.

Just curious, why do you feel that?

I'm definetly one of those people who agree that the 1987 Universe was misrepresented heavily in the film.

However, I felt as if it was purposefully meant to be shown as a universe to be heavily contrasted with the 2003 one rather than the "actual" 80s universe, just like with how Mirage is purposefully exaggeratted in the film and not meant to be the actual Mirage. (but not in a spiteful way).

If that was the intent, which i highly doubt, then they should not have done that. We get it the 80s turtles were silly and their logic was ridiculous. I'll even give TF the whole "The walked around on the streets in broad daylight" bit cuz they honestly kind of did. But I hated how TF depicted the 80's turtles as cry baby cowards. They are not cowards. The scene were they all cry and run up to 2k3 Mikey (or was it Raph) made me sick. It just feels like they were characterized so poorly out of spite. The 80's turtles are silly, yes. But cowards who seem nearly totally unaware of the situation and are unable to take the obviously serious situation seriously? No!

Krang has his own rock warriors in Dimension X. So, why borrow those rock monsters from the Kraang in the 2017 crossovers? It's like we had forgotten Fred Wolf's Traag, Granitor and the others.

I mean... That's not really a flaw of the writing as much as the budget. They had to make plenty of new character models and sets for those episodes, there needed to be compromises in a few places.

No!

Ok, I will give you that one. No matter how cartoony they were, they always treated a threat like a threat and would never cry or run away from battle like cowards. (thats more of Shredder's thing)

Most of the other jokes I felt were coming from a good place, except for the crying/running away one.

I always hated when Shredder was in a great fight against the turtles, but suddenly Krang called over the comlink and told Shredder to leave.

The FW Turtles in Turtles Forever. What the hell was Laird thinking??? :-?

- Donatello being outsmarted by a family of hillbillies: ...I rest my case. It speaks for itself, really.Okay this one I have to defend because I feel there's a reason. The point is Donatello has modified the van to have all these tech gadgets which are now being used against him and the others by the hillbillies. It's not the hillbillies by themselves that's the threat, it's them using the Turtles new tech against them.

And think it can't be improved.By that token the entire premise of TMNT is ludicrous but then isn't that what you would call Crysler Law or Newman's Law or some name like that?

Again with this? Making fun of a bad cartoon you have nostalgia for isn't the same as insulting your intelligence. No neatoman don't start this again. It's not a bad cartoon and yes Turtles Forever is insulting because it shows the FW TMNT as morons when even at their best silly they clearly weren't.

I would like to see the shared Fred Wolf–Nickelodeon Dimension X on a lrager scale. I guess Dimension X was once more like the Milky Way before the Kraang began to manipulate some parts of it (Nickelodeon part) in all possible ways (space, time, gravity, laws of physics).

A lot of TMNT needs to define Dimension X, what it is? Dimension or galaxy?

Give a DVD movie to each iteration.

That would be great. I created a thread about Dimension X.
