Nickelodeon and Netflix have set a deal for Nickelodeon Studios to produce two original, animated feature films: The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The films are based on Nickelodeon properties but do not involve the TV series, Viacom said. The company announced the deal during its first-quarter earnings call with Wall Street analysts.

“This partnership with Netflix is part of Nickelodeon and Viacom’s broader efforts to tap into Nickelodeon’s library of culturally resonant properties and produce new content for third-party digital and linear platforms,” Viacom CEO Bob Bakish said during the call.

This deal follows Nickelodeon’s partnership with Netflix on Pinky Malinky, which premiered on the streaming service in 2018, as well as a new live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which starts production this year.

Viacom’s Paramount Pictures division has become more and more involved with Netflix. Its TV operation produces high-profile series like 13 Reasons Why and The Haunting of Hill House. The film studio last year set an overall deal with Netflix, which took root in the studio’s sale of Cloverfield Paradox to the streaming giant. Upcoming projects under the Netflix arrangement include To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before 2.

Nickelodeon Studios is a new asset under the kids and family brand’s umbrella. Brian Robbins took the helm of Nick late last year after longtime chief Cyma Zarghami exited the company. The fortunes of Nickelodeon will help shape Viacom’s future, executives acknowledged on the earnings call. They predicted growth in the second half of fiscal 2019 under Robbins and his rebooted team.

Okay, this ISN'T connected to the 2018 show? But it has THAT title? Strike one.

I'm confused. But more than that, I'm leery.

And, of course, it's animated. Strike two.

“Does not involve the tv series”

I guess it’s a separate entity but retaining the Rise looks.

LOL Of all things they keep from this series they decide to keep the looks, do they not know all the backlash it got? Oh well, I hope Leo is the leader in this film since they aren't connected.

Many people love the look. And even for those who don’t, I don’t think that’s the biggest criticism. Most complaints I see online are people who haven’t even watched it calling it teen titans go and complaining that splinters fat and stuff.

Anyway, I’m hoping this is canon to the series, and that the “unrelated to the series thing” is just bad wording or something. This would be a great opportunity for some big story development with the show.

ZariusTwo

Anyway, I’m hoping this is canon to the series.

That could be problematic if it is canon seeing as there's no existing TMNT library on Netflix...and some might not care to pay for Nickelodeon in order to watch the show, and fans of the show might not want to pay for Netflix just to plug a gap in the continuity if the series all of a sudden starts referencing the movie

It's best it just serve as a stand-alone primer, a taster of what you can find on Nick, and allow the audience to make their own choice.

Last year there was rumours of some TMNT specials happening, I guess this one of them.

I was hoping for a 2012 version, I don't mind Rise, I just can't get into it as much as the 2012 show. With it being on Netflix hopefully it will be a tad bit more serious.

Nickelodeon heard our cries for a Netflix TMNT series. They conveniently ignored our "like Daredevil, but TMNT" criteria.

Article says "The films are based on Nickelodeon properties but do not involve the TV series, Viacom said."

Does that mean it's Rise of the TMNT but non-canon? Or it's a new version of TMNT for Netflix?

I fear it's the former, but there's a low chance it's the latter...

The "Rise of the" part might be erroneous reporting. Because that doesn't make any sense.

Not that Nickelodeon has ever cared about recycling titles (ala the fresh, "Out of the Shadows" recycled from the video game into the last movie).

Riiiight. And Adam West is the only Batman. If Button and Nolan never had the balls to go against what the fans wanted and go for a truer adaptation, we still would have had 60s Batnsn today.

Someone needs to just do Mirage TMNT and then we'll see how people respond.

The funny part is. If it becomes a hit, we're gonna suddenly get a lot of fake 'was always a Mirage fan' types that weren't even born at the time.

All of the official Nickelodeon channels are repeating the “Rise of the” part, so that is definitely not in error.

This is a big WTF announcement, really.

I get it, Nickelodeon suits who are reading this. You got the deal with Netflix to make a couple movies for them. “Rise” is the current branding for TMNT, and you’re sticking to it for at least a few more years. You don’t want to “confuse” people by breaking up that branding. You want to sell existing toys and merchandise that looks like Rise, not have to create new crap to match a different look for an independent TMNT movie on Netflix. Well, I’m just going to call that as being a crap move. The DC animated universe kept its groove without having to match branding or having branding matches to it. They just made some fun movies that fans enjoyed without needing to sell do-dads along with ‘em (although maybe there were some toys that matched? I don’t know; I honestly don’t follow DC closely). Anyways, this is a huge amazing opportunity and it’s going to be wasted on an extended episode of Rise. Ugh.

P.S. There are other sources saying that it's based on the series. Which would make a whole lot more sense.

I'm really kind of surprised they'd run off and want to do a movie for it so quick. 2012 can't even get the mutagen bomb explained, and they dropped the ball on what could have been a cute Half Shell series of movies, but this...get a "movie"? Ohhhkay.

I'd far rather see 2003 get added to Netflix. :ohwell:

Is it really going to be non-canon to Rise? I'm sure it'll be a standalone story but I don't see why it wouldn't be canon.

I read the news of of TMNT & Netflix on an animated movie collaboration and was super excited, then I read it was Rise....
I mean, I'm sure the movie will be fun and great on its own right but that was certainly a buzz killer after reading TMNT/Netflix combo and the potential.

I do think it has the potential of getting good ratings/views whatever you want to call it, when 2012 and the 2 PD movies have been on netflix they always appeared in my trending/popular tabs so people watch them, people will watch out of curiosity even if they don't like it and I have a feeling the movie won't be bad. Let's hope for the future of Netflix/TMNT partnerships even if this isn't wat most of us wanted to start with.

The feel that I've gotten from the bites I put out is that the story is meant to be independent of the series, in that you don't have to watch the series to "get it," but I don't know what that means for canon.

It will be Rise, though. So if you're living in the delusion that it will be something different, you should come back to Earth.

Is this to me? I never said it'd be something different, more that it's likely in continuity unlike other posts suggested and that this being popular might interest Netflix in more TMNT content outside of Rise.

I am only speculating here, but I am pretty sure that in this case it would be Nickelodeon actually making the movie. But there is probably some money going back and forth in terms of funding the production. This one will need to perform at least to whatever measurement of expectations they have to have any chance of doing more.

All that said, Netflix is in the process of opening their own animation studio, so they will be making in-house content at some point.

This film is essentially set in the "Rise of the TMNT" universe, but it has no bearing on the canon of the TV series. It's kinda like the Steven Universe movie coming out later this year, it's set in the same world but doesn't actually happen as far as the TV show is concerned.

While I am ambivalent about this series as a whole, I have enjoyed some points of it. Still, this film could possibly lead to more TMNT stuff being released such as series based off those TMNT shorts released a couple years ago. It could also be a venue for movies set in the different universe of the TMNT franchises. Or even a mass multiverse encounter of the Turtles (kinda like the Spiderman: Enter Multiverse film). Having too many tmnt universes together would be too convoluted. So at best have three to for universe of Turtles encounter each other. Such as since the 2k3 and the 2k12 universe have had their encounters with the 87 Turtles, but both the 2k3 and the 2k12 universes haven't encountered each other.

And Rise of the TMNT is just another dimension. Maybe there is an unrevealed universal law in the 2k12 universe saying the 10 dimensions are not supposed to unite since that would bring about chaos.

One could say the 2k12 universe was created due to the 2k3 and 87 turtles meeting one another.

And the rise universe was created by the 2k12 and the 87 Turtles meeting.

So there could be a multiverse story here Donnie in the Rise universe creates a dimensional portal that somehow effects the 87, 2k3, and 2k12 universes.

Lol, such a ridiculous moment this morning when I read the headline "Animated TMNT coming to Netflix".

Like, that's been one avenue we've been discussing forever as an a potential home for an animated TMNT in the vein of the Mirage or IDW comics.

It was that one possibility that seemed just out of reach, but close enough to hope for.

Then you see the headline, before you have even had your coffee, wondering if you're really awake, only to find out it's for "Rise".

I'm being dramatic, but I know I'm not alone in the general sentiment.

Now on the positive side: I believe we've heard either Bobby or Tom mention that one of the dreams for the IDW team would be to contribute to an animated, more mature-oriented adaption of the TMNT for some type of streaming service or home-release. While I'm not putting any money on it yet, it is possible that this opens the door a bit for that. It's not what we want, but it's not necessarily the complete opposite of what we want, if you know what I mean.

No you are NOT alone. Not by a long shot. We suffer together, brother.

Eh, I'm optimistic. This franchise has done so many different things that at this point I feel it could do anything and it would work out fine. Personally, I've enjoyed every version for different reasons. Sure, I have my favorites, but there's no one I really hate. Even the current series is starting to grow on me. So if they want to make a movie, bring it on. I'll watch it, I'll probably like it, and even if I don't, there will be new ones in the future when the franchise inevitably reboots itself again.

I think it could be set in the Rise Universe, but in an alternate re-telling of the Origin Story on a much grander scale.

Kind of like the film "Pokemon: I Choose You", and its relationship to the anime.

After seeing today's newest episode and how it made Donnie look... If the premier of this should land right between the end of the first season and the start of the second, imo this stand alone movie (movie-length ep?) would be an EXCELLENT vehicle in which to make these Turtles mature and grow into something much closer to who we know the TMNT to normally be, and then take that new maturity/growth into the second season.

Uggggh... How do I feel about this?

Mixed feelings, really. I was a lot more excited until I heard that Rise may be involved - even if it's just loosely. This series is okay with a few higher points at times, but overall, it can't hold a candle to the last series or even the one before that for me. Not even close.

On the other hand, a Rise movie could be good and open the door to more stuff in the future. I REALLY want to see the 2012 series revisited at some point. As others have said in here, a Rise movie could lead into something great for the series in the future and hopefully for the franchise as a whole. I wouldn't mind something based on the IDW comics or even the original comics as long as it's not too gory. More mature is fine, though, and also welcomed.

Anyway, whatever they decide to do with the movie, I'll watch it with an open mind like I have with every other iteration so far. There have been far more hits than misses for me in this franchise, after all.

While I would much prefer a Netflix-funded feature to be something different, like say an IDW comics adaption, or a continuation of past works (such the Henson universe returning via animation, similarly to how the 1960's Batman was), I'm excited for this. I absolutely love Rise, happy to have more in any format. The fight choreography in its TV series is balls to the walls as it is, though the other sequences are a bit lacking as a result of budgetary assets favoring the former. I wonder if this film will seek to correct that. Imagine if this looked entirely like the intro does, wow! Though it would be a bit niche, my early prediction is that this will be a crossover event, between turtleverses. Perhaps OT X 2012 X Rise.

while I agree with your take on the great and not so great parts of this new show and am also really looking forward to this movie for some reason, I hope we don't get YET ANOTHER crossover event with turtleverses:tsad:.. I feel turtles forever did that and then it was original or at least to me it FELT like an original and honest idea for the project.then came REPEATED rippoffs in form of the 2k12 series' crossover episode 'SPECIALS' with the OT turtles... I am REALLY looking forward to a time that we don't get more of this same old crossover idea...they never really do something exciting with this.it is just the meeting of various incarnations and boom, time for several lame jokes about this that and the other, a joined operation and TADAAAAA the finale....

as for the movie itself...just imagining a running time of lets say 60 full minutes of rise turtles would feel like an eternity in this iteration with their short episodes...thats a good thing and creates space for much developing

I'm fairly excited. I love Rise, and have little issues with the series overall. The only problem I could see this movie running into is overexposure. Rise works on an 11 minute format where jokes are rapid-fire and nothing ever feels like it goes on for too long. An hour or so of that could be overkill.

I believe that the 22 minutes episodes work better because they are not fillers like most of the 11 minutes episodes. Anyaway, I still have hopes they won't do a movie 100% based on Rise.

But maybe it just wishfull thinking.

All I know for sure is that I would prefer a movie that goes like this one:

I've been saying this since I've joined the forum. There is no such thing as filler in a TMNT cartoon. Filler- by definition- is an anime term used for episodes that don't adapt material from the original source. It's not a synonym for "episode I don't like". You can make a case for episodes that don't drive the plot forward in 2k3 or Nick, but Rise is a comedy series without an overarching story in the scale of the previous shows. These one-off episodes are the entire point of the show, and usually they're referenced in a later episode as a fun call-back- so it's not like the show exists entirely in a vacuum.

sdp

This, the notion of something being filler simply because it doesn't continue the plot is stupid, many awful episodes continue the plot. It's the single episodes where you see the characters grow or go on cool adventures that in many shows are far more memorable than story arc episodes.

When western cartoons barely had any story arcs or episodes that drove the plot forward of course it was awesome to see them and it was great that over the past few decades story arcs became more and more important in shows but now fans and producers alike think that every episode most do this and if not then it's expendable which is horrible and has lead to either weak single episodes or fans complaining it didn't move the plot.

Not everyone pays attention to the 'Rise' series, so you may get better answers if you redirect your question to the toy/merchandise section. http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20

I'm still wondering about this, could it really be axed? Will it air this summer? I feel if it doesn't air in the summer it likely means its dead. Was it perhaps changed halfway through development? Will it come out a year after the show has officially aired its last episode to no fanfare (that happened to Teen Titans).

Without a SDCC it feels like we won't get to ask about this movie for a long time to an official source unless it actually comes out.

The only predictions for this movie I can think of. 1) Nearly every named character the Turtles have met making an appearance. 2) A heartfelt reunion between Draxum and the gargoyles. 3) A version of Krang being the main villain. The Utrom that gave Saki the armor could be related to Krang. 4) A flashback revealing how April met the Turtles and Splinter. 5) The return of Mayhem. 6) April's parents meeting Splinter and the Turtles. As the former wanted.

Could have....but you know if there were more of this show, it would remain the same.:tlol: Aside the fact that Nick is contracted to do this film, I guess they sort of owe those who enjoyed this show a movie since they decided to shorten the last season without letting them know there's a change of plans. Now I don't blame Nick for cancelling it since it wasn't making a profit for them and I'm sure some would still be upset at them regardless but if I was a fan, I'd like a heads up. CN at least told fans of Ed, Edd, n Eddy that the said season six would be replaced with a movie, which I felt was a solid ending.

To paraphrase, we get different flavors of TMNT as time goes on. Perhaps something a bit darker will be made in the future.

I mean, we'll probably never get comic book dark. It is a franchise primarily aimed at children. Still, it's nice to have the guys around regardless.

Yeah, seriously. F*ck TMNT. It's 99% terrible now and it gets worse with every new round. Keep putting out toys for the old-school fans and let the comics stay around so long as people are interested (I predict that the IDW run, once it ends, will be the Very last TMNT ongoing comic book series). But flush the rest of it down the toilet.

The cartoons are crap and getting worse every time. The movies.... UGH. Just stop.

There never should have been a Toy Story 4, Terminator should have stayed at only two movies, Lucas shouldn't have sold out to Disney and Laird never should have sold out to Nick. These are Harsh Truths but factual all the same. In each case, what we got was nothing but More Product, all of it various shades of Terrible. And ALL of it serves no purpose but to shovel dirt on what made the originals so great, fracturing the fanbase further and creating discord where it's not needed.

Keep that practice going long enough, and that awesome thing you started with gets buried in sh*t to the point it's entirely worthless.

We've long since passed the threshold where TMNT was "mostly good". It's like 80% garbage now and I can barely remember why I even liked it in the first place. Each new iteration only makes me more and more ashamed to admit that I care about it at all. And it's mathematically impossible to EVER get back to the point where it was "Mostly Good Things." Not happening.

The last time this franchise wasn't a total embarrassment was 2004. And the future looks more and more bleak with each bit of news.

But sure, it's already a dead brand, just keep shoveling more crap out the door, trying to entice every generation of kids to get into it when it's a proven fact that Kids Don't Care About Ninja Turtles. They haven't cared since 1992.

If the corporate masters knew who their audience actually was, they might have a shot at pulling the nose up. But they don't. Nick makes products for children, and children don't care about TMNT. It's impossible to fix things unless Nick sells to someone like WB, which they'll never do. They'll throw it on a shelf forever and let it rot before they do that.

The whole thing is a f*cking zombie, and it's embarrassing.

Time to make like Elsa and Let It Go. The brand has no future.

If it's really that bad, though, why not just keep grinding away at it? What is there to salvage by locking it away?

Strangely enough, I can totally relate to the sentiment here. This is pretty much how I see things with most or all of my old favorite videogame series. Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Contra, and so many others, have all just been entirely divorced from anything that made them worthwhile in the first place, at least as far as I'm concerned. At this point I'd rather they be retired than to have them dragged out, propped up, and desecrated yet again.

At the same time, some part of me keeps hoping for the impossible. Maybe that's reason to keep trying, just to keep hope alive. IDK, I'm very much of two minds about it.

The memories that something USED to be cool before it became a bad joke, for starters.

Nobody even remembers that TMNT was ever anything but a bad joke from the 1980s, an embarrassing relic. The more bad stuff they make, the more it obscures the Good. The more bad movies they make, the more that The One Good One becomes a minor footnote. The more furry fanfic they cram in the comics, the more Mirage gets pushed into the mists of forgotten history. The more cheap cash-in video games they rush out, the more obscure the good ones become.

What is there to lose by shoveling more half-assed "product" out the door in some vain hope that the law of averages will eventually kick in and we'll finally get SOMETHING that isn't sh*t? In a word, Everything. In more words, the very heart and soul of the franchise, along with the memory that it didn't ALWAYS suck so hard.

If someone throws $100 in a giant vat of raw sewage, it doesn't matter that once it was pristine, nobody's gonna want to accept it, and nobody with any dignity is going to jump in to fish it out and try to wash the sh*t off of it.

The TMNT brand is nothing but a rough diamond in an absolute ocean of Raw Sh*t. By this point, it's not even worth saving. Any memory of what it was, or what its potential is, gets further buried with every "Rise" or BayTurtles.

We could kill it off, and be happy with the memories. Or. We can keep watching the tide of sh*t rise higher and higher. When your mouth is full of sh*t, who even cares anymore that you used to be having fun? You certainly aren't now.

We're holding our breath waiting for Seth Rogen to "save" the franchise.

When your last, best hope is the "Sausage Party" idiot, it's time to kill the lights. Party's Over.

Ha! Savage. What if it turned out stupendous, though? I'm not holding my breath or anything, just saying. If it was really great would you be able to admit it, even just to yourself?

Anyway, how can properties even be killed off really? If the copyright holder doesn't use them they just fall into public domain, then literally anybody can, and definitely will, create even more.

I'm sure sticking one's dick in the vacuum cleaner hose feels REALLY good, for a half-second before it turns into a tragedy. It's not at all worth that risk, though.

I likely won't have to admit anything, because it's not mathematically possible that some dick-and-fart-joke buffoon is going to produce a TMNT story that will do anything but turn my stomach. He's made his living aiming at the lowest common denominator. He was too old to actually be a fan of the brand in the 80s/90s the way we all were. He may have an appreciation for it, but he didn't grow up with it. Therefore, he doesn't "get it". It's just another lowbrow comedy vehicle to him, this one with a few less jokes about weed, coke, and semen.

When people tell you who they are, listen. Absolutely nothing in his entire career suggests that his TMNT project would be anything but a disaster. But people are so downtrodden with this franchise, they're actually hopeful. It's maddening. Any sane person can see from a mile away how bad an idea that was to greenlight.

But that's the thing about people who go through life with rose-colored glasses on. All the Red Flags just look like flags.

Alright, in the face of that fact I'll retract that specific criticism. "Whoops".

Regardless, he's still a manchild, and I think the manchildren have had the ball for TMNT long enough. Let someone who knows how to tell stories handle it for a while. Things evolve and change over time, including ourselves. How many old franchises have you revisited and wondered what you saw there in the first place? Nostalgia is a strong emotion.

Also, these shows weren't made for us. All of the cartoons since the very beginning were made to sell toys to kids. I know that's a cheap argument trotted out in these discussions, but it's true. We're well aware that these are businesses, and that businesses exist for one purpose: to make money. And that's what they're doing.

I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again. If we want something more appealing to *us*, then we need to show that the money is out there. We could do a gofundme or a kickstarter page or something. Otherwise, the studios are going to look at things like Steven Universe and Teen Titans Go! and try their best to stuff every property into those molds.

I know your frustration, though. As the first generation of Turtle fans, it'd be nice to be remembered beyond coy acknowledgments here and there. I just don't see it happening any time in the immediate future.

Until then, at least we're getting something rather than nothing.

Argument voided for the fact that it's been proven twice or fourthwise that Kids Don't Care About Ninja Turtles. WE cared as kids, which is why we still care now. Only a handful of kids cared in 1996, 2003, 2007, 2012, 2014, and 2017 by comparison. There's a million reasons why that could be true, but it's true either way. Only a VERY small number of people paying attention to TMNT anymore are, or have been, children.

For better or worse, each time out, the people with strong opinions about each new iteration were only the ones who grew up with the original. EVERY new version "wasn't made for us", but for the elusive Whole New Audience of young kids. And time after time after time, the kids of 1996, 2003, 2007, 2012, 2014, and 2017 were presented with a Fresh New Take On TMNT designed specifically for Them and not Us... and every time, those kids collectively went "meh". Maybe they like Pokemon more. Maybe they're distracted by Minecraft. I don't know the Why; I just know that not a single generation of the under-10 crowd has reacted with strong feelings towards a single TMNT reboot. A few individual kids, sure. Collectively? MOST kids just ignore it every single time they reboot it.

Therefore, the "It's for the New Generation" argument is completely invalid and the Powers That Be are totally misguided for pursuing that path exclusively. It doesn't work. It's never worked, not with THIS franchise. Some things it works for, but sometimes it just doesn't work and you can't force it to. He-Man, same thing; Mattel tried marketing it to a younger audience in 1989 and again in 2003, that audience didn't bite, so in 2007 they shifted gears and started marketing the MOTU brand exclusively to 30-somethings, because they finally recognized that those are the only people who give a single sh*t about He-Man. They stopped trying to pursue an audience that wasn't paying any attention and made a very wise decision to cater to their existing base. Now we're drowning in He-Man product. That brand was f*cking DEAD, and now it may be a far cry from 1984 standards but there's no shortage of new products being introduced across all media and most/all of them are really, really good.

If they kept blindly trying to "reinvent" the MOTU brand for young kids, none of that would be possible. Because Young Kids don't give a sh*t about He-Man, and they don't give a sh*t about TMNT, either. To try and grow your audience is commendable, but when something simply isn't working you have to reassess and stop trying to go against the grain.

TMNT needs to be marketed to the people who won't treat it like just another passing fancy. Otherwise, it definitely won't survive once we're gone, and all there will be to show for the attempts at reinvention will be one mediocre failure after another.

If they lean into the older audience as their lifeblood, at the very least the products they put out have a chance at being GOOD. Which they can't be if all they do is try and aim it at a new audience of 6-year olds every three years.

If even one TMNT reboot had actually succeeding in creating millions upon millions of new fans, I'd feel differently. But that hasn't been the reality of the situation, not even a little bit. They can't get their hooks into the kids deep enough to keep them around. And it certainly hasn't been for lack of trying.

Kids don't care. Alright, that happens sometimes. So aim for the people who do care. The ones who've cared for 30 years. Simple. "Not for us anymore?" That's so incredibly shortsighted.

I'll personally take "Nothing" over "Something New" when every new something is worse than the last New Something. They can come back when they have something worth getting excited about. Until then they can give it a rest.

The argument isn't voided.

You want to cool stuff? Show them you're willing to shell out the cash for it. These companies have been getting their bread buttered by impulsive 6 year olds and their parents' wallets for decades. Why are they going to drop what's worked and start pandering to 30-40 year olds? That doesn't move anywhere near as much product.

Case in Point: Batman TAS. There's a market for it, so the line continues.

That's true... of the cartoons. It always surprises me when grown adults are upset that the latest TMNT cartoon isn't attuned to them.

Now, conversely, I'm perpetually surprised and saddened that there isn't any content out there more in line with Mirage or even the 1990 movie. It's been proven to work. You can still have cartoons out there for the kiddies... but adult content can work as well, simultaneously. And as I've been saying for years, TMNT works best when you give kids something to outgrow TMNT into. Like how when I was a kid and got tired of the Fred Wolf stuff, I walked into a bookstore and discovered Mirage TMNT and I'm still into them 20 years later.

They just don't care anymore. And there isn't a Peter Laird or Kevin Eastman to quality control stuff anymore. I'm sure Viacom's general idea is that if they go too far adult, maybe it alienates the 5 year olds (or specifically, the parents of said 5 year olds from letting them) watching the cartoons, which is their real bread and butter (toys, TMNT underwear, etc.). Like, even the IDW stuff, which is supposedly for "an older crowd" -- what does Viacom do? Forbid them from having the Turtles kill and other red tape.

I don't suspect that will change anytime soon.

So, let's analyze... the one thing in the TMNT brand that's consistently making money hand-over-fist is the NECA line. The one aimed at 30-something collectors. The ones that are so hot they show up on eBay at a 200% markup the day they go on sale. 6-year olds are the ones asking for/paying for these "$50" figure sets that are actually selling for upwards of $200-300 a pop? Seriously? That's what I'm supposed to believe, especially when by some accounts these "toys" are so brittle they snap taking them out of the package. These are for the kids? Kids are the ones asking for them, buying them at exorbitant prices and "playing" with them for five minutes until they break?

Could've sworn it was the Old Farts with money to burn and a persistent Nostalgia Itch... Huh.

Compared to the "Rise" action figure line, which was 100% aimed at kids, and was 100% ignored. $10 action figures, which spent 6-8 months marked down to $3.99 on Clearance at every Walmart and Target in the country. You couldn't give those toys away if they each came scotch-taped to a ham sandwich. "Aimed at kids". Soooooo... why didn't "the kids" buy them? Why didn't they buy the BayTurtles toys either, for that matter? Why don't kids read the comic books (market research, again, posits that most of the IDW book's readership is median age 30)? And so on and so forth.

The new movies failed both critically and commercially. The "Rise" cartoon obviously didn't hold an audience because they cancelled it in midstream with nary a peep. The movie toys AND the "Rise" toys flopped at retail. They are not succeeding in their ventures to aim younger. Those things were ALL supposedly "aimed at a New Audience", but they didn't work even a little bit. Fact is, they each failed badly. That's the Objective Reality.

The ONLY area of the brand making consistent waves (and Big Money) right now... is the super-expensive toys aimed at old farts with a ton of disposable income. The audience you're saying Nick would be foolish to cater to because "the REAL money is with the little kids."

Huh. Alright. If you say so.

Actually, no wait... that's the exact opposite of what you said was going on! What the... who the... HOW the... HUH?!

Again, if I saw evidence that they actually were making more money from 6-year olds than 36-year olds, I'd have a completely different opinion on the subject. Fact is, they're NOT. They're literally making money from the Exact Same People they made money off of in 1989. The "Kids" who grew up and are now nostalgic adults, not Kids Who Are Kids Right Now. If the movie toys and "Rise" toys didn't spend their entire existence collecting dust on Clearance aisles coast-to-coast, I'd absolutely hum a different tune.

I don't play Wishful Thinking, I just Observe and Report. Their money is absolutely with the Old Farts and not the Young Punks. They just haven't smartened up to that yet. Mattel did, and they're doing huge business again with He-Man. I'm sure it stung when they realized that Kids Don't Give A F*ck about the character nowadays, but at least they did wake up to that harsh fact eventually. They wasted many, many years between 1988 and 2007 trying to "square peg/round hole" the MOTU brand and make it something For The New Kids, despite new kids not caring one bit about some barbarian in a loincloth with a magic sword. At least they finally decided in 2007 NOT to just ignore the millions and millions of gainfully-employed nostalgic 30-somethings with money to burn, and since then things have slowly gotten better. It'll never be 1985 again, but it's hotter now than it's been since then, for the most part.

And ALL Mattel did differently... is realize that Kids Were Not Their Main Audience. No matter how much they THOUGHT or WANTED that to be the reality, it simply was not so. So they said "F*ck it, lets go back to playing to the people who already love us!" Turns out that there ARE millions of people who love a jacked-up barbarian with a magic sword... just nobody under age 30. And that's fine! At least they didn't go broke trying to invent a new audience that wasn't biting, and realized who actually wanted to buy into their brand. Now, MOTU fans are happy because there's tons of great product available in a variety of styles, and Mattel is happy because they're making a lot of money. All those years when they stubbornly insisted, "NO! We CAN get the kids back! We just need to... I don't know... make it more like anime? Or wait, is that still hip? What do kids like now? HELP US BE RELEVANT!", they actually lost tons and tons of money and put the franchise in the cooler. It was absolutely gonna die if they persisted in that direction. Before their "Classics" line launched in 2007, MOST fans were indeed predicting that MOTU was dead and buried.

Then one day, Mattel says "Nevermind. Kids think He-Man sucks. Let's sell our wares to the Dads instead." BAM, millions of dollars in the bank. Collector lines AND retail lines that are hugely popular. Can't keep the toys on shelves, and the "hot" items skyrocket in price immediately because supply can't meet demand... just like the NECA TMNT figures.

Huh.

Yeah... sorry. "The kids are the real audience" is wishful thinking, not reality. You have to look not at what these companies ATTEMPT to succeed at, but what they actually make lots of their money from.

6-year olds don't demand $50 Dolph Lundgren He-Man action figures, and they don't demand their dads buy them $200 action figure sets on eBay based on a cartoon that came out 25 years before they were born. They DO, however, ignore $10 TMNT toys marked down to $4 on the regular, based on Factual Evidence.

You can't hitch your wagon to such a fickle horse if you expect to actually go anywhere. Again... if things happened differently, I'd see it differently.

Voltron
10-05-2020, 05:54 AM
NECA isn't Nickelodeon, Leo. They license the franchise and both get a cut from the toys. With Playmates, the Turtles are proprietary. Also, you're not taking volume into account. If I sell 500,000 $3 units and you sell 10,000 $50 units, I'm still making 3 times the profit you are. And that's before production costs and licensing fees and all the other legal matters play into it.

Second, if they're being sold on eBay for a 200% mark up, that mark up goes to the retailer, not the companies themselves.

Also, I just checked and the figures I'm seeing are about $50 a pop. At a 200% mark up, I should be able to trot down to a specialty store and pick some up for a quarter of the price.

That's true... of the cartoons. It always surprises me when grown adults are upset that the latest TMNT cartoon isn't attuned to them.

Leo, you're coming at this whole situation from the wrong direction, and making some illogical leaps.

First let's address the NECA stuff. I'm no expert, and I have no access to the numbers, but I feel confident assuming that NECA is making a lot of money on turtles -- by their standard. They're serving a niche market, they're not even barely in the same league as Mattel or Playmates.

Rise and the Bay movie turtles did poorly because those properties weren't good. Still, they probably made many multiples of the money NECA is making.

There's this notion that kids don't, and won't ever care about certain properties or themes, and so the companies in charge of them should give up on that route and focus on the niche adult market. The idea for those companies isn't to put out a product and hope it catches on, the idea is to keep trying until they hit a formula that works. It's not a matter of whether kids will inherently care about the properties, it's a matter of finding a way to leverage the brands they own to make the kids care.

MotU Classics is referenced as an example of a brand owner relenting and catering to their supposed only logical market, and that the success of that has now lead to the re-invigoration of that brand on the mass market. I don't think that's the right narrative at all.

The (one) guy who was responsible for Classics, was only allowed to pursue it because he did the management of that brand as a hobby, in his off time. It wasn't his actual job that Mattel was paying him for. He was just a guy around our age who happened to be a huge fan with a huge passion and turned it into a personal project. They didn't make big money on Classics.

My own sneaking suspicion is that Mattel had incentive to let him do it primarily because it's a way to keep their copyrights alive and retain ownership of the brand without losing too much money on a mass market they weren't prepared to tackle at the time.

The adult market is much smaller than it might seem.

They say for any mass market toy series with an adult audience, they (we) only make up about 20% of sales -- all up front, incidentally. "Collectors" are the ones who run out to clean the pegs at launch, then flip the figures on eBay at a markup. Once that's all said and done; when all the collectors have the figures they want, then the rest of the 80% of the sales occur to kids from more refreshed stock now languishing in toy aisles.

MotU Origins on shelves now is, again, not for us. This is another attempt to build a new kid market. They know we're buying them right now, and they're clearly trying to take advantage of that, but we're not the end goal, we're just the fish in the barrel who can possibly help springboard the brand back into mainstream appeal.

I've noticed there's not much mention of 2012 Nick turtles. They were pretty successful. They never quite reached 80s and 90s turtlemania levels, but surprisingly close. The show had a rare five year stretch. The merchandise was very prolific (unlike with Rise). Believe it or not, lots of real kids owned the toys; safe to say about 80% of those toys sold were for kids. That's all despite a much more competitive landscape these days. There's so much battling for a share of attention from kids today that making any kind of impact is a big success.

Leo656

Much of this isn't entirely disproving my point.

What I'm trying to put across is, when you have a niche property, you have to become AWARE that it is indeed A Niche Property and stop trying to mainstream it if you're not having any success at it. At least for a time until there's a better window for success. That's what Mattel did with MOTU. According to the guys from MVC who worked on the comic books, Mattel used to have the attitude of "Big Money or No Money" with the MOTU brand, and they kept it dormant from 2004-onward because they had no way to monetize it on a global, mainstream level. They weren't interested in JUST the Dads, they insisted on trying to hook the little kids too before they'd take a single step. "Kids don't care? Fine. NO MOTU FOR ANYONE!" Because that's fair. That makes the company money AND keeps the fans happy. Sure.

We only have MOTU toys at retail NOW, because instead of taking the "Big Money or No Money" approach in a mainstream market that had no room for the brand, they decided to favor their bread and butter in the interim. The niche market. The fans who never abandoned the property. They stopped chasing ghosts trying to create some "new audience" out of thin air, and devoted 100% of their attention to the people who ALREADY loved the brand. The 30-somethings who kept the brand alive when everyone else quit on it. The passionate people. Because why wouldn't you do that?

That lit the spark that got Mattel Classics rolling. Which begat the Super7 Filmation 5.5s in FYE and such places. Which in turn led to Super7 doing the Classics and the movie-inspired figures. All of which circles back around into the fact that we once again have MOTU toys at retail again 15 years onward.

If all Mattel had done was reboot after reboot trying to keep the brand "hip", chasing trends and aiming at a new crop of 5-year olds every two years, we wouldn't be here now. They'd have milked the cow's tits right off and there'd be nothing left.

Instead of a never-ending string of failed reboots, they realized "We have a niche property" and leaned into the 30-something fans. Smartest thing they possibly could have done. There'd be no "Origins" line in the present time if they'd instead spent all their time since 2004 trying to "craft a new audience" while telling the old audience to "get f*cked, we don't need you anymore."

Brand Mismanagement is a very real thing. TMNT fans love to talk about it being an "evergreen" property, but I'm dead serious, I have a ton of doubts about that at the present time. You can NOT sustain yourself indefinitely by chasing ghosts. Sure, reinvention is vital. BUT. Nick and Viacom and even Playmates have at times been VERY vocal that when it comes to TMNT, "If you're over Age 10, we don't need or care about you or your money."

And that's dumb. That's a very, very, very shortsighted business model.

After X number of reboots and the youngsters all repeatedly giving up on the brand for any number of other pursuits... they need to reevaluate their strategy and stop trying to recreate 1990. That ain't ever happening again. They will never, EVER get a hundred million little kids worldwide to shout "Cowabunga!" on command again. Those days are over. Every single reboot that falls flat on its face, is one step closer to some Viacom executive simply shrugging and saying, "This thing doesn't make Big Money anymore. Must be broken." And then just sticking it on a shelf to never see the light of day again.

That's ultimately not what I want. But by constantly making bad creative choices, and then shrugging it off by telling people, "Well, it isn't for YOU, anyways, nyaaaaaah!" they're being incredibly shortsighted, arrogant, and ignorant.

Their audience is niche, but it's MUCH bigger than just being about little kids. Why they insist on only one slice of the pie when there's a much bigger market out there with money to spend and love in their hearts for the brand is a mystery to me.

Kids don't have expendable income. Mommy and Daddy buy the toys. "We don't care about Mommy and Daddy anymore, they're too old for our brand now. They cared in 1990, but we don't give a f*ck if they still care Now."

What kind of ignorant twat says things like that out loud when they're allegedly trying to build a billion-dollar brand back up? I mean really.

They lost me when they came out and said in plain English, "We don't care if adults like our brand or our products. We only care about Little Kids." More's the pity for them. I'm exactly the kind of dummy they should be bending over for: an overly-sentimental 30-something with a strong sense of brand loyalty and a passion for spending way too much money on frivolous bullsh*t that reminds me of my misspent youth. I'd give them a TON of business, if there was anything at all about the brand I found favorable to my tastes.

Keep feeding me bad movies and bad cartoons and telling me "Like it or Get outta here", though? Alright. Their loss. Pretty sure I spend more on this nonsense than any 6-year old kid does. But I don't like what they're selling, so they get $0 from me. Only one person? Sure. But how many alienated 30-something TMNT fans just like me are there? Those pennies add up, believe me.

It's fine, though. More money for He-Man toys. :tgrin:

But if they honestly think that TMNT is gonna be "evergreen" when they refuse to give the older fans even a taste of what they're always begging for... well... they're wrong. They simply are not correct in their logic or their thinking.

"It's not for you anyways"? Sour grapes, nothing more. When you can't admit you made bad decisions, blame the customers. That always works.

....At putting brands out of business.

As someone who recently forked over too much money to get a complete (for my purposes, anyway) run of the 4Kids TMNT series on DVD, I'm firmly in Leo's camp on this debate.

The '80's kids are the ones with the real buying power. We make up a smaller audience in terms of numbers, but I think we make the largest audience in terms of spendable cash.

And how often do our interests get served by the TMNT brandholders?

I can tell you how many times my interest has been strongly hooked by TMNT merchandise: three times.

1. The Mega Bloks collection
2. The Mirage reprints
3. The IDW hardcovers

That's it. Never gave part of my paycheck to the Platinum Dunes wave, or the 2012 wave (beyond getting exactly four Turtle action figures for my son, who turns out, didn't really care as much as his old man), and sure as hell not for the 2018 Rise wave.

Ya know who got my money for the 4Kids DVDs? An eBay "entrepreneur", we'll call him. Ya know who missed out on my money for the 4Kids DVDs? Nick.

It's madness. Madness!

Voltron
10-05-2020, 09:03 PM
I doubt it's madness. It sounds like we all got something we wanted, with the exception of Andrew, whom I side with.

Do you even know what you want? Andrew's been the only person who actually told me. Everyone else just seems angry for anger's sake. Are we getting Fred Wolf again? Do we need a dark and gritty anime series a la Gotham Knight?

The NECA action figures are out there for collectors. The DVDs are, too. What new thing needs to be made?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a big fan of Rise, but I understand Nick's decision in going that way. That's the stuff that sells at the moment.

Nick's a part of ViacomCBS. They have tons of revenue coming in from other places. I really don't think they're going to gamble a bunch of cash on TMNT if they don't see a significant return.

Leo656
10-05-2020, 09:37 PM
Where are the "significant returns" they're supposedly making?

Platinum Dunes Movie Series: Cancelled

"Rise" Cartoon: Cancelled. Very unceremoniously, with only cryptic hints on Twitter making it clear.

Playmates Toys: Only thing in the pipeline are repainted figures they already released to mediocre reaction 10 years ago.

IDW Comics: Sales dropping (this is admittedly an industry-wide problem), actual petitions circulating with people begging them to stop turning the book into Furry Shipper Fanfic Showcase.

Yeah, this brand's doing great.
-------------

I don't know how I can write novella-length posts listing every grievance in crystal-clear detail and people can claim to not get the point. Then again, "reading comprehension" has never been a primary skill among people who frequent this forum so I guess I can't be surprised.

The point is simple. They're shortsightedly trying to "create a new audience" instead of catering to the audience that already exists, and it's going to kill the franchise.

They say "We don't want 30-somethings" but 30-somethings are the only ones spending any money on their products.

They say "We don't need to create products that 30-somethings want to see, we can just invent new fans out of thin air!" But they can't. They haven't. It's not working. Kids DON'T CARE about Ninja Turtles! It is NOT a "kids' property" if every time they present it to a new audience of kids they go right back to picking their nose and ignoring it.

They'd rather keep trying to hook the nose-pickers instead of throwing any bones to adults, when adult fans are their only hope to last another 20 years.

They need to stop aiming younger. It's going to kill them.

They need to make PG-13 movies that aren't simply "PG-13" for dick and fart humor.

They need to lean into Mirage and the 1990 movie aesthetic.

They need to make cartoon shows that aren't JUST for the "Teen Titans GO" crowd.

They need to listen when a few thousand people tell them, "I liked the comic book and bought it religiously for over 10 years, but I dropped it because I don't care about furry shipping and won't buy it again until it's actually about Ninja Turtles again."

They need to stop lashing out at the audience and calling them "intolerant" or "Too old to care" whenever they list a grievance. This might be the most important thing.

They can keep trying to make a fast buck every three years aiming their brand at Kindergartners. Might work a little bit in the short-term, but again, it stops working very fast and eventually you can't convince people your brand isn't a joke.

OR. They could open things up a little bit and allow for more products that a grown adult with a working brain can enjoy without irony.

Many people have openly said, they'd be fine with tripe like "Rise" existing IF there were ALSO "good" TMNT products out there to enjoy. But this "You get ONE THING at a time, like it or f*ck off" approach Nick has been taking with the brand is going to kill it sooner rather than later once people like me collectively get sick and tired of being abused.

It's all been said over and over and OVER again. "I don't understand your grievance." Well that's a You Problem.

The wrong brand brought the franchise, and they're killing it off due to their own shortsightedness and bad business decisions. Alienating the passionate hardcores in order to make a fast buck from fickle casuals.

This isn't Wishful Thinking. I don't DO that. I just Observe And Report. You don't agree? Then you're not paying ANY attention. "I'm just happy there's more things with a TMNT sticker on it, I don't care if they're good!" Well, the you're officially The Problem.

Demand people aim higher. Or enjoy your sh*t sandwich.

They're obviously NOT doing great or the garbage they keep putting out wouldn't keep getting unceremoniously cancelled. They're not doing great, they're flailing. Any idiot could see it.

It isn't rocket science.

Cool to hear Leo finally as the leader (even if too little, too late as I knew). I figured this was what the movie was going to be about. Raph is gonna cause tension now that his leadership role has been "taken." Probably be as petty as he was in that one episode where Leo dethroned his favorite wrestler.

I actually thought the Foot recuit being a female Casey was a pretty clever plot twist. Certainly nowhere as bad as a black April that felt like some other character.

Anyhow it was obvious some form of Krang or Utroms were coming, the finale had an Utrom skeleton in one of the flashbacks with Shredder. I'm glad this continues off the finale with Leonardo being the leader. This will probably be the final thing of Rise ever made so this should be a good sendoff.

Your personal headcanon doesn't count.

Also this is Rise, to 10 to 1 it'll be some new character or some mystery character that turns out to be one of the Turtles or April as an adult.

In any other series (except the OT), this character from the future would obviously have been Renet.

Okay, so Krang as assumed -- check.

If they did randomly decide to bring regular Casey into it, then girl Casey is probably his mom (grandmom?) he's named after... But it would be an uninteresting choice and further screwing with the TMNT timeline; grandma Karai was odd enough.

I want to say that a "mysterious stranger [who] arrives from the future" could also be this show's take on Renet, but if Osment is playing said time traveler, then prob not. (Unless, knowing this show, Renet has become Reynold. lol)

1) The film will start in the future where the stranger hailed from. And everyone is wearing eye patches.

2) The stranger is a future version of one of the Turtles, or someone they know.

3) A heartwarming reunion between Draxum and the gargoyles.

4) A flashback revealing how April met the Turtles.

5) Nearly every character that the Turtles have met making an appearance. Probably during a climatic battle against The Krang.

I'm sure that the pandemic hasn't helped its production but I mean, I guess its pretty much dead.

So I'm going to take it as the last hurrah for a show that tried to do something different and didn't succeed. I consider its quality to be quite high on a lot of fronts, but its focus was lost on the audience it was trying to cater to.

Not quite. Netflix works in the red. Their entire budget is dependent on debt as they've accumulated so much of it for production and programming. Their reasoning is that they'll earn that money back ten fold in the long term. Time will tell if they're right I guess.

That's not true anymore, this last quarter report they announced they were no longer doing for their operations since it was no longer needed.

Cool sounds like their bet paid off then.

I'd actually be very curious to find out if Netflix' royalty model is enabled simply when someone "clicks" on a show, or it has a caveat of some kind like "clicks on a show and continues streaming for 4 contiguous minutes" or something like that.

Well it definitely seems to have paid off, I still find it difficult to recommend netflix as a stock, it seems overvalued but i keep being proven wrong. It's definitely a great service but man, its debt and long term plans don't seem the best but well look at other streaming services crumble so perhaps they do deserve each cent the stock is worth.

I'm sure it has some minimums it has some minimums it has to meet before royalties are given but who knows, netflix keeps all their info on how their shows do to themselves.

Must be why they finally also put an actual title on the still blank Netflix placeholder. (Taking away any of the 0.00000001% hope it was anything else TMNT related.)

Meanwhile, the Loud House movie announced alongside this one, also still without an actual date, has a thumbnail and a listing among the scrollable upcoming titles section. But isn't on this list posted here. What are they even doing.

I just want the movie to come out already so we can put Rise of the TMNT behind us. I enjoyed the show more as it went on (especially the finale eps which were cool), but this will be the definitive last time the series is revisited.

Didn't they say somewhere that the movie has already finished production? They sure are taking their sweet time. Kinda wondering if the movie takes any scrapped ideas or concepts that may have been planned for the show.

The story is probably what a season 3 would have been, bringing in Krang (or the Kraang/Utroms), as well as Leonardo becoming the leader of the group.

The movie seems to have been ready/finished for over a year, they just have no reason idea what to do since it is based on a cancelled show nobody watched or liked. And will only be uploaded one day to get it over with since there's no way to spin it into a movie anyone who didn't like the show will watch. We're just waiting for it to be sent to die.

Movie might be good but that won't change any of the above, unless of course it's a 1987 turtles crossover in which case people will be talking about it.

Netflix sitting there waiting for Nick to make those final payments for getting to play it on their streaming service. Nick sitting there waiting for the last lingering merchandise dollars to come in, that mostly consists of some remaining Rise gift bags in Dollar Tree... lol

Or so one might think it worked that way if they're taking forever with it.

The movie is done. To not air it would be a waste of all the animation/writing/voice acting they did. It's basically a net loss until they can make back whatever money they can get from netflix and then the eventual DVD release.

DVD of this? Oh good luck. I wouldn't hold my breath on that after the show got cut short and they're dragging their heels on getting this up on Netflix.

If fans of the show are lucky hopefully they'll later be able to buy it digitally, since that costs the company nothing to produce compared to DVDs.

They always release movies on DVD of kids cartoons.

Depends on the deal Viacom made with Netflix for the movie. Netflix might have purchased full rights to the movie which wouldn’t allow Viacom to put it out on DVD later.

Since paramount plus is a failure in the US and not likely to expand elseqhere I wonder if other countries will get the tv show on netflix when the movie premiers.

Since this is not going to make much money I really don't get why they don't just put it out already to get it over with.

Behind the scenes

Nick: "Hey, NECA, you wanna make figures for this movie and release them simultaneously?"

NECA:

Nick: "NECA? Okay, we'll wait till you get back to us on that."

Are we ever going to get a trailer for this thing? Or did it get cannceled over all because of horrible it did?

AquaParade

Yeah, it's weird. Maybe when they went into initial production on this, they didn't plan on the series being cancelled so early on, because it makes less sense to release it when the show is long gone.

I mean, how long could it take though? I imagined it was essentially just a long episode, but maybe they put some work in.

The Loud House movie that was originally announced alongside this one and has been in the "worth the wait" list now finally has a date (Aug 20), so what is even going on with this other one.

LeotheLateBloomer
07-28-2021, 08:43 AM
At this rate, many people who watched this show aren't even going to care about this movie anymore. Maybe even some of the diehard fans. With how much time has passed since the show has ended and how unsuccessful it was, they don't have much to lose by releasing it now.

Maybe they put Kyle Massey's bit part character in it and are trying to remove it last minute, after, you know, that arrest warrant. I'm kidding of course, but still sitting on it at this point, it might as well be.
