In 2015, the Dark Knight met the Heroes in a Half Shell on the comics page for the first time. Now, that same team-up is headed to animation with an all-star voice cast, and we've got an exclusive first look.

This spring, Warner Bros. Animation is teaming up with DC Entertainment and Nickelodeon for Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, an all-new animated movie that unites everyone's favorite turtles with the Caped Crusader for the first time outside of the comics page. Based on the Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics miniseries by James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II, the film will see the turtles meeting Batman via a transdimensional encounter, and feature our heroes teaming up to face Batman's deadly rogues gallery.

Not sure where to put this

Not sure if I put this in the right thread. If it isn't hopefully a mod can move it.

James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II's landmark 2015 crossover Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is being adapted as an animated film as part of a new partnership with DC and Nickelodeon. First reported by SYFY Wire, this cartoon feature is scheduled to be released on home video later this spring. The animation studio developing this film has not been disclosed.

IDW Publishing, who published the original 2015 Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book limited series, is not listed as being involved.

The cast includes frequent DC player Troy Baker, who will be voicing both Batman and the Joker in the film; while he has voiced both roles for seperate projects, this would be his first time doing both in the same project.

Baker will be joined by Darren Criss (Raphael), Kyle Mooney (Michelangelo), Baron Vaughn (Donatello), Eric Bauza (Leonardo), Rachel Bloom (Batgirl), Tom Kenny (The Penguin), John DiMaggio (Mr. Freeze), Tara Strong (Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy), Carlos Alazraqui (Bane), and Cas Anvar (Ra's al Ghul).

This wouldn't be the first cross-company crossover to be developed as a film - Dark Horse's 1989 Aliens vs. Predator limited series inspired several live action crossover films in the early 2000s.

There's already another thread and the movie doesn't seem to be tied to the Nick cartoon in any way. So yeah, this will probably get deleted or merged with the other one.

Anyway, that screenshot looks awful. I'll have to see it in action before fully judging it but I really don't dig the art style.

All right! We're finally getting an IDW story in animated form- even if it is the Batman team-up! Really looking forward to this, thoguh I do think the art style is a bit... weird.

Feel a bit nervous talking about this after my big mistake last year, when I leaked it here. The leaked info was from another chat room and I didn't realise it was private.

Not keen on the art style but maybe I will get used to it.

I like some of the voice cast (I don't recognise a few names), Leo being voiced by Eric Bauza is awesome.

Wasn’t the general consensus that we loved the art from the TMNT/Bat comic crossovers but the story was not well received? So if I’m reading correctly they kept the weakest part of the crossovers? How about vice versa that.

I do like that the turtles don’t have pupils. The colors seems off. I am glad we are getting something at least. Voice cast seems wonderfully solid.

edit: when I say colors I’m not talking about the turtles skin, just the background and general look, could be my phone screen though

I haven't loved the recent DC animated films, but this direction is certainly more up my alley than anything else Nick has been doing with TMNT lately.

Your pic is a much better size than the one I posted.

It's great to see some faithful TMNT designs in 2d. The Raphael image looks a bit better than the group shot, imo. It could really look beautiful in motion, if they have enough budget/time. We can't count on that though. The Killing Joke animated film, from a few years ago, looked terrible in motion. Either they learned their lesson there or they didn't. It's the most recent one I've seen.

That said, we have to remember that this is the first of a Nickelodeon/DC crossover deal. It's possible Nickelodeon will have higher standards when it comes to the animation, or just that the production will be done somewhat differently than before. Guess we'll see.

I was thinking same, but I like that blue-hued, yellow-symbol batsuit, so I can't complain.

Batman, Robin, Batgirl and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all together in one movie! :D Sounds awesome! This is going to be a much better TMNT crossover than the one that happened on Power Rangers in Space. Great voice cast as well. Darren Criss did a great job of voicing Raphael in that short that was released a couple of years ago. Eric Bauza has contributed so much to the franchise, so it's cool that have him in this movie too.

I don't know about that. The story of the first Batman crossover wasn't a master piece of comic storytelling but it was fine buoyed by the fact that it was well Batman and TMNT.

They largely kept the dumb elements to a minimum where it had the desired effect that it was a bit of fun to break up the seriousness as opposed what many turtle fans feared that it would constant turtles trying to force feed Batman pizza and stuff. It did go a little silly towards the end but I'll give it a pass. Besides this isn't going to be the exact same story.

Yeah the art style for this isn't as good which is shame since it was basically the 2K3 turtles in the New 52 universe which DC has a long history of animating accurately. If anything gives me pause it's actually Batman in the blue outfit, that might signal that the overall tone even in the Batman elements is going to be sillier.

Still even looking at those caps it looks miles ahead Rise of the TMNT and honestly simply having TMNT connected to Batman in this ways does help with franchises credibility. If it turns out well you could easily slip a Hollywood exec a copy of this to show what TMNT is capable of.

Yeah I did say the whole thing got silly towards the end.

I'm sure like every other TMNT fan I rolled my eyes at that but I appreciate them going for a big blow out and I can't really begrudge them having a bit of fun with a concept like Batman meets TMNT when the vast majority of writers would have gone dumb throughout with everything from TMNT's canon treated as deliberately dumb to conflict with the ultra serious Batman characters and world.

As a whole the story was more than solid when it could have been a lot worse.

I noticed that the shots showing Leo depicts him him the scabbards on the hip. That has never been the default for any of his character models before, has it? I know there's a shot in season 1 of FW where he puts a sword into a scabbard on the hip but he's otherwise not shown wearing it on his hip (doesn't even have scabbards at all).

Anyway, I like this detail. He's typically shown to strap the scabbards to his back, which is common in fiction but doesn't actually make much sense in real life. The character design still isn't appealing but it is a nice detail.

Not intrinsically. If this happens to sell twice as much as any other recent DC animated movie, then we can start to ask that question.

The guy who runs the official TMNT Twitter responds to my criticisms by defending the holy Playmates and/or Rise using his personal account.

Ooh, do tell!

What are you talking about? Wasn't that the one where Batman's whole rogue's gallery became mutant animals?

Yeah I did say the whole thing got silly towards the end.

I'm sure like every other TMNT fan I rolled my eyes at that but I appreciate them going for a big blow out and I can't really begrudge them having a bit of fun with a concept like Batman meets TMNT when the vast majority of writers would have gone dumb throughout with everything from TMNT's canon treated as deliberately dumb to conflict with the ultra serious Batman characters and world.

As a whole the story was more than solid when it could have been a lot worse.

My only complaint about mutating all the rogues was that they shoved all of it into the last issue (and the cliffhanger page from the penultimate issue), and it was basically over as soon as it was introduced.

They didn't. Bruce said that he always looked at Tim as his Robin, but it didn't undo it. There's nothing wrong with Tim never being Robin though, because his reasoning for adopting the Red Robin persona was because he didn't want to disrespect Jason.

Comic book continuity finally broke me, between "New 52" and Miles Morales entering the 616 universe.

My mind just couldn't endure all the "mental gymnastics" it took to try and make sense of all that. Too many unanswered questions and contradictions.

I had to essentially change the way I look at comicbooks. Imagining them as some type of ancient-text that has been interpreted, and re-interpreted over hundreds of years. Nothing has to make sense, because they are just stories being passed down by different groups of people. There are nuggets of truth, surrounded by contradictions and contrasting interpretations.

I'm being dramatic, but it's essentially the only way I can enjoy these in-continuity stories.

Either that, or I just imagine each story to be completely stand-alone, with a beginning and future of which I am uninformed and blissfully ignorant.

I love comics.

Not originally, but the backstory changed with the New 52.

EDIT: Though some people were right that the backstory was mostly reverted with Detective Comics, but I doubt that it was entirely reverted, because in the same run it's directly mentioned that Tim was never officially Robin. So the current backstory is a bit of a blend of both, with Tim reaching out to Dick to go back to being Robin after Jason's death and then becoming Bruce's sidekick himself, but never actually becoming Robin. If anything about that is wrong do correct me.

The foreword to this TPB is quite profound as well, as it makes the case why Batman needs a Robin, despite the popularity of his "lone avenger" myth that was especially popular after the 1989 movie.

Also, I liked the Robin III: Cry of the Huntress mini-series.

The portrayal of Tim Drake probably did more than any other character to make the persona of Robin "cool" again.

Didn’t read the comic but couldn’t they exist in the same universe? Both keep identities a secret so never having met before is plausible.

Although I guess it’d be weird that they ignored each other’s threats and Shredder and the Foot never knew about Joker and other criminals.

Anyway I want to see a BatVan or Turtlemobile. A green Batmobile that launches shells like Mario Kart. That would be awesome.

Seriously, given how over the top some Batmobile features are that’s a totally reasonable idea.

Batman lives on the same Earth as characters like Superman, Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl. The Ninja Turtles usually live on an Earth that has its own everyday heroes and vigilantes (Casey Jones, Gadgetman, Nobody) as well as superheroes (Bugman, Silver Sentry).

Also in the TMNT, weird things are supposed to happen, but most people aren't aware of it. Mutants and extraterrestrials living on Earth (and natural-born talking animals, like Ninjara) muste hide from Humans. (I know they have been seen some times, but it's still the basic)

In DC and Marvel Comics, weird things can happen in broad daylight.

Yeah, that's definitely true about the origin.

That said, I don't believe the origin's should actually be connected. Unless the TMNT were to join the Marvel universe. Not sure where you stand on that.

It'd be like any one of those old crossovers from the 90s with, like, Punisher vs. Batman or Star Trek/X-Men. For the crossover and only for the crossover, they exist in the same universe. At that point, do they still feel like the Mirage turtles to you though? I'm not sure it would have that effect on me.

That said, I may have changed my mind on the origin issue. I can see the beauty in finding a way to actually connect the origins, whether it's done the way you said, or actually has some type of cross-dimensional narrative to explain it.

I'm sure for some people, actually retconning the origins, to make them connect wouldn't work, but since it sort of exemplifies the beauty of inspiration and legacy within comics, I'm now thinking that I would be all for it. I love that type of meta-narrative ****. See, I'd be all for the narrative to focus on that type of story, because, typically, running through as many of the rogues-gallery as possible, isn't a great pitch to me, even if you can do good things within those boundaries, and that's what crossovers usually do.

Though, if the team were to consist of Eastman and Miller, I'd suppose we'd want something simple and action-packed, meta-narrative be damned. Bring in Peter though, and who knows.

This is slightly unrelated to the crossover discussion, but I’ve always loved the 80s indie comic duo-shade look. I’ve always wanted that style to make a comeback. If they do ever do a crossover with the “Mirage” turtles, I hope they would emulate that look with photoshop.

Speaking of grafix duoshade, Does anybody here know of any modern equivelants/knockoffs of that? It seems sad that the only way to do it is with computers nowadays.

Wouldn't be too dissimilar from, say, the Savage Dragon crossovers. Obviously there's no real way to reconcile the whole Image universe around the back history of TMNT.

That said, I may have changed my mind on the origin issue. I can see the beauty in finding a way to actually connect the origins, whether it's done the way you said, or actually has some type of cross-dimensional narrative to explain it.

It's gotta be a thing. It's one of those geeky things in geek culture since forever. It's one of those things, like, when your friends know you're into TMNT but they're not, they'll invariably come up to you one day and go, "DID YOU KNOW... the same cannister that smashed the bowl with the turtles hit Matt Murdoch by the eyes???"

Yes, I know that. Everybody knows that.

Though, if the team were to consist of Eastman and Miller, I'd suppose we'd want something simple and action-packed, meta-narrative be damned.

I think we can do both, can't we? Obviously The Hand and The Foot need to be a thing, two branches of the same "body." Certainly with violence at least on a level of TMNT Vol. 1., #1.

Bring in Peter though, and who knows.

I don't think Peter is a Daredevil fan, though, only Kevin is. Also, I think it was the very first time I met Kevin, in 1999, he told me his dream project -- that he said he'd been pitching hard -- was TMNT/Daredevil. I imagine Marvel just never took the hook, but Kevin physically should still have whatever it was he was pitching right now. I'm still happy that we're getting a movie that isn't aimed squarely at 8 year olds and TMNT's association with Batman carrying on outside the comics but looking at the art for the part III of their comic crossovers make me really wish they'd tried to emulate that art style for the animation.

It's kinda made me realise that I'm more than over with the idea of giving the turtles different body and facial types. It's more than fine when it's subtle like the 1990 movie and what Paul Harmon was attempting to do with his art on Tales V2 had the book continued, I'd even argue the Imagi movie did this well but since the 2012 show set it as a new standard it always seemed to get exaggerated by artists. Don in particular always seems to get the short end of the stick looking like he's been stretched vertically.

The designs in the movie don't look bad but yeah seeing the artwork from the story the movie is based on really hammers home what the turtles should look like. Some of the best turtle designs imo.

Mirage is the only universe where there's the origin connection. If, say, IDW TMNT met Daredevil, it'd just be them randomly meeting with no connection. Same as Batman or anybody else.

The'd still be thematically linked though. Even in a crossover with Mirage version would the quirk of the origins being connected be anything more than a vague recognition between the characters like Raphael's "Do I know you?" when he meets Chet in 15 Years Later.

It really shouldn't be anything more than that anyway. That'd be kind of a worry I'd have that some writer couldn't resist playing up the connections between the two franchises. To be honest there's a few other Marvel crossovers I'd love to see before Daredevil even if that's the most obvious one.

Kevin had nothing to do with 4 but he could start a brand new volume 5 set, like, now, and leapfrog whatever ending events hypothetically happened at the end of 4. And just start with the Turtles at a different point in their lives. New enemies, etc..

That would depend on what kind of an end Peter has in mind for Vol. 4.

I think when he started it he meant it to be the last TMNT story and by his own admission had an apocalyptic end planned but then after a while changed his mind. I think the idea of the turtles being an 'evergreen' property appealed to him and wanted a more open ending. He even floated the idea of a Vol. 5 with more traditional TMNT stories once, of course what is traditional for Peter might not what many people including Kevin thinks...like would the Utroms still be on Earth?

Of course you could always have two continuations of Mirage; an Eastman-verse and a Laird-verse largely sharing the same 80s and 90s history but diverging from when the two stopped working together. To be honest I imagine Kevin would be more into starting from scratch if he even had the juice for a proper TMNT run.

edit: it would be great if Mikey slaps one of those I heart NY bumper stickers on the batmobile without anyone knowing. Like as they all quickly walked by to go some place. lolYa something like that sounds good. Batman being all serious and giving him a look of disapproval.

I’d still prefer some crossover vehicle that maybe Don and Batman put together.

Who is ponying up the money? from a quick read on the PR it seems it's DC, in that case it'll really be something different than whatever viacom may have produced, if it's viacom then if it's successful they might continue this idea of tmnt movies like DC does.

I am more than excited for this although it's weird that they're going for the blue cape and cowl of the 70s and 90s comics for Batman. The turtles' designs (especially Don) could be better but they still look pretty cool.

There is nothing that says IDW can't make Mirage Volume 5. And yes, when I say Kevin can make Volume 5, I mean Kevin can pitch it to IDW and IDW can run it up the flagpole to Nickelodeon and see if that's OK.

I can only hope that he does as I would love to see more of Mirage continue and at this point, a Volume 5 is more likely than Peter continuing and concluding Volume 4. Laird just doesn't seem to have the desire to continue it. He might just be done with it for good, unfortunately.

Pretty much this.

It really shouldn't be anything more than that anyway. That'd be kind of a worry I'd have that some writer couldn't resist playing up the connections between the two franchises. To be honest there's a few other Marvel crossovers I'd love to see before Daredevil even if that's the most obvious one.

It makes you wonder that if a Volume 5 were to happen, would we get less sci-fi influences?

Uh problem Black and white comics aren't popular anymore So if volume 5 does happen it would probably in all colors. I think Volume 5 would be shorted and conclude the mirage continuity for good.

Please pay attention to what you read because nowhere did I say that it had to be black and white. Disagree. It’s weird because it treats them as fictional within their own universe.

The comics were black and white because of circumstance, not because everything is black and white in the Mirage universe.

I mean, it’s fine they chose to do that, I’m just pointing out the fact that their world is actually intended to be full of color. It’s like if the 2K3 turtles acknowledged that their limited number of animation frames were slowing them down in combat.

Again, I get the stylistic choice, and the pinpoint reverence and homage to that first issue is cool.

That is pretty cool, but as far as I know, we still don't really know how the production works. If Nick is strictly approving of every decision WB makes with the TMNT, that sort of takes away from the idea.

Still neat though. At this point, I'm hoping for WB to just buy the TMNT. We'll never get Mirage back, but I think this would be an exciting and positive outcome.

While I am looking forward to checking out some new TMNT animation, I can't say I'm excited for this. I fail to see the appeal of these crossovers. I'm not a Batman guy in the first place, so there's that, but these two worlds just don't seem a logical fit to me. I can concede incidental similarities, of course, it's just, I dunno, they're far removed in my mind. The comics, while brilliantly drawn, are tonally wacko & treat the TMNT in such a way that lives up to only the most surface level Casual idea of who they & their world are- Fred Wolf on steroids. I try to enjoy them as best I can, but art aside, they're a bit painful to endure. Pairing that with how I am unable to appreciate the Batman side of things, well, yeah, not my cup of tea on a whole. Nonetheless, it may play out in a more thrilling fashion in this format, though the art style doesn't really do it any favors. I do quite like Andy Kuhn's work over at IDW, but these designs aren't really up my alley. Oh well. Curious to see if this will be a visually unique adaption, or something new & separate from the books.

Interesting. I can see your point, and I sure hope they don’t come across as simply FW TMNT on steroids, but I haven’t even read the books yet.
My hope was that this would be the most “on-brand” TMNT we’ve had in years, compared to Platinum Dunes and “Rise...”. That’s what makes me excited. But if “on-brand” just means FW TMNT, that might dampen my excitement. I suppose I was imagining something more like the 1990 movie, where they take pieces of the widely-known, pop-culture version of TMNT and melt them with a heavy comic-inspired “base”.

My hope is for this to treat the TMNT with respect (not that they can’t be a bit goofy - I enjoy that) and that it reaches a new audience who gravitates and supports that rendition of TMNT, while also giving us a fun little flick.

I supposed I’ve just been cheerleading for the little snail in the race that’s branded “comic-inspired TMNT animation” for a while now, and any time he wakes up, I’m urging him to move just an inch towards the finish line. This could be an inch. Go snail, go!

In fact, whenever you have a new interpretation of a superhero/fantasy type character, I think you need to touch on the origin at least for a moment.

When people talk about a new Spider-Man and Batman movies nowadays, and say things like “we don’t need the origin! We all know it!”, I tend to disagree. We don’t need an origin-based story, but we do need to at least take a few minutes and put a stake in the ground, acknowledging the origin.

Spider-Man Homecoming just barely touches the origin. I think it could have used a little more clarification, but I’m sure some will disagree. I’d say, given the circumstances around Spider-Man and his many reboots, it’s acceptable... and it works. I would have had them acknowledge it just a smidge more though.

Yeah agreed, I thought the same given both the amount of and time lapse between the reboots.

I'm just wondering what sort of time frame we can expect for this movie.

How about playing a theme song or voice before the film begins, like in the cartoons? (it can be a new-written to distance the film versions from other versions) Just think of series like Blackstar or the Masters of the Universe and how much is revealed by just a few sentences accompanied with some music.

No. That's a good idea for a TV show but not a movie, maybe a text crawl/opening narration or an introduction scene. A theme song intro would just be odd in a standalone movie.

As for the examples you picked, He-Man has a terrible intro in terms of being an adequate explaination even if that's what it sets out to be. Did Adam discover his powers by accident or did he get them some other way? What are his powers exactly aside from being "the most powerful man in the universe"? Why do they need to anyone besides the three people mentioned? Then you watch the actual show and find out that Eternia isn't just a kingdom but an entire planet, there's way more characters running around than the intro implied and for some reason the tiger can talk despite only roaring in the intro.

As for Blackstar, I don't know anything about it. Watching the intro it felt a little too similar to He-Man in concept and presentation apart from some Flash Gordon influence, I even noticed how it was produced by the same people. Weird.

I agree an opening crawl would be better for a film when you mention it. I forgot about Star Wars.

Yes, Blackstar has similarities with Masters of the Universe (even if John Blackstar is the Earth astronaut and not his mother). Being a 1981 Filmation Studios production, I would call it Proto-Masters of the Universe.

Tried to watch a DC animation last night and was quickly reminded to lower my expectations for this. The animation and voice acting is no more premium than your standard, low-budget Saturday morning cartoon.
Cardboard cut-out animation and “whiny-baby” voices for half the characters.

That said...
- I’m still glad this was approved and appreciate the direction it’s going in
- there is still a chance this will have a slightly higher production budget due to it being the first of a joint effort between Nick and WB
- a lot of people enjoy the recent DC animated films, so take my personal opinion for what it’s worth

I started with the most recent Death of Superman and quickly switched to Gotham by Gaslight. Couldn't finish that one either.

I don't mean to disparage anyone who worked on these movies or anyone who enjoys them. It's just that it doesn't feel like a premium product that gets me excited. I'm not interested in the current television animated offerings, and these don't seem much a step up at all from those.

I did enjoy the Dark Knight Returns two-parter, despite it not being able to live up to the book, for me.

That one is heads-and-shoulders above every other direct-to-video DC animated release since they started the series in 2007. It actually tried to stick as close as possible to the source material while still being artistically interesting.

Other films I have high praise for have been Superman vs. the Elite, the All-Star Superman adaptation, Batman: Assault on Arkham (tie-in to the video game series), and (to a lesser extent) the Son of Batman trilogy. I didn't see Justice League: Throne of Atlantis until after the live-action Aquaman, so it was weird to see how they both tried to adapt the same storyline (Geoff Johns's take on the franchise).

It was okay.

I thought they did as good a job as they could have with Death of Superman, but I hate the art style they've been using ever since they started using the New 52 aesthetic. Wonder Woman was pretty lousy in that one. But New 52 WW is a pretty crap character, so using that as a base could only bring mixed results anyway.

Despite not actually liking Dark Knight Returns all that much - it's definitely the most overrated Batman story of all time, and the less said about the sequels, the better - I agree that the animated adaptation is one of the best they've done. Year One is also pretty good, and has the bonus of adapting a Frank Miller Batman story that's, y'know... Actually good. :trazz:

I haven't seen a lot of the newer ones. Gotham By Gaslight was very good, despite pretty much ignoring the book it's based on. I picked up the Reign of the Supermen one but I haven't had time to watch it yet. I've heard mixed things.

But yeah, they're a mixed bag overall. No idea how this one will turn out.

If that's the Saturday morning cartoon standards of today's cartoon series I'm not impressed. There's a complete lack of detail for characters in today's animation. 80s cartoon animation was rough, rushed and variable but at least for most cartoons characters had facial features. :o

Context is a factor.

For most people familiar with the comic book stories they're based on, the DC Animated films range from "Really Good" to "Lousy"; if someone doesn't read comics, then everything inevitably gets graded on a curve. What's "lousy" to me might be perfectly fine for someone with no basis for comparison.

Sometimes, points have to be taken off for falling short of potential, as well. "The Killing Joke" movie in and of itself might just be "eh"; but for completely failing to really capture the material that it's based on - from the flat, totally not-dynamic art style to the terrible line readings from the veteran and much-beloved and begged-for cast - it slips from "Eh" to "F*cking Tragic". And that doesn't even get into the horrible Batgirl subplot.

They were all generally a lot better before about 8 years ago. After that they really started going cheap on the art and animation. That's half the point of these things, so such corner-cutting really isn't acceptable. Neither is the mandatory 90-minute runtime, but that's a whole other rant.

I like the DC Animated films more often than not - although some are rather bad and a lot of better ones still have some serious problems - but there's serious need of improvement across the board. At some point they just started settling for "good enough", and it shows.

Very true, where there is less familiarity there's less or no comparison, so expectations are different. I have found this with a few things I watch.

It's kinda sad when we think that some of us find ourselves accepting 'good enough' because at least it isn't bad.

Edit: The killing Joke was the other (and first one) out of the 3 that I watched. This one I was less impressed with than the other 2. Gonna admit I didn't know they had DC animated movies that were for an older audience before then, this came up on the movie channels and was cert 15 so thought to check it out. Again though, I can't compare it to the source.

I adore the Killing Joke comic book; the animated adaptation was a huge disappointment on every single level. It looked so damn cheap, it felt like they blew their budget on the voice cast. And for all the hype, Conroy and Hammil read their lines like they just woke up from a nap, so they really needn't have bothered. And at times when the line readings weren't "bad", they were at the least not contextually appropriate - Example: Joker's "Why aren't you laughing?" line near the end isn't supposed to be shouted; it was clearly written to be a more quiet and sincere moment; just one of many examples of an inappropriate reading, and when you read the book, you see that.

Just a hundred things wrong with it. Y'know what sucks the most? A good buddy of mine is the type who loves the characters but doesn't read comics, he mostly just dips into the films and cartoons. He's never read "Killing Joke" but he's heard how it's a classic, so he was excited for the animated adaptation. He actually FELL ASLEEP while we were watching it, and afterwards, I offered to let him borrow my hardcover so he could read the "real" story as it was meant to be experienced. He said "Nah, I'm good." :ohwell: It's a shame because being exposed to a subpar adaptation has removed any desire to experience the story the "correct and proper" way for him.

That's why some of these things are dangerous. They can push someone away from a great story by doing a botched or half-assed retelling of it. We all know, "The book is always better" as a general rule, but not all of them need be bad adaptations. They've done really good ones in the past; hopefully they can get back to being more consistent.

There seems to be this idea that every Batman comic story adapts neatly into the Kevin Conroy/Mark Hamill universe when sometimes it just doesn't work. I mean I can't really see all of Frank Miller's work like All Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder being adapted for Conroy and Hamill because it just doesn't fit them.

As far as the DC DTVs they are never amazing but are rarely horrible, I stopped caring after the Nu52 designs and stories took over and when all of them had to involve Batman in some way since the other heroes were unprofitable. Ironically enough, Bruce Timm himself said as much in one of the special features of the BTAS DVDs. Basically, the Batman of BTAS, is the best they were able to do to appease the studio (use a style that capitalizes on the success of the Tim Burton films) and the (relatively loose) censors of the FOX network.

Almost any "adaptation" is, at least in part, a watered-down product which only exists to sell toys to children.

By definition, it is impossible to become a "superior" product within those guidelines and restrictions.

Timm in those same commentaries mentioned how the limits of the censores sometimes made them do some more emotional scenes than if they had shown what happened. Sadly he forgot that when he started making the unrated direct to videos where they preferred to show instead of being more subtle about violence.

Almost any "adaptation" is, at least in part, a watered-down product which only exists to sell toys to children.

By definition, it is impossible to become a "superior" product within those guidelines and restrictions. The comic itself has had many bad issues over the years. If we're going to say the comic is superior we really can't when it's had as many trip ups as other incarnations of Batman. I feel the 90s cartoon did a perfectly good job of transplanting nearly everything from the comics. I don't feel too much was missing from the 90s series except for some more gory violence but as we all know we don't need violence just for the sake of it.

Leo656
03-09-2019, 07:22 PM
That's a huge over-simplification.

Obviously by way of sheer volume, there are going to be more "bad" stories in the comics because there were thousands of them. That's just simple math.

But it goes beyond "violence" - which really isn't even the issue - and more to the simple fact that a lot of important characters and stories are either ignored completely or compressed into meaninglessness within the confines of The Animated Series. It wasn't even close to adapting "nearly everything"; it wasn't even close to "nearly everything" on just the Big Important Stuff. No Red Hood/Joker origin. I forget if they covered how Dick Grayson became Robin. No Jason Todd. No "Death In The Family". No "Lonely Place Of Dying". No (proper) Tim Drake. No "Knightfall/KnightQuest/KnightsEnd". No Azrael. No "Prodigal" storyline where Dick took over as Batman for a short time. And so on. And Bane - as always - was horribly butchered and neutered in that series. Why can nobody do Bane properly? It's infuriating.

All of those things are EXTREMELY important to the Batman mythos, and none of them were represented in that cartoon show to any satisfying degree. And that doesn't even get into all the great and important stories that came out in the comics after the series was over, and continue to come out, that won't be getting an animated adaptation anytime soon. But it's an insult to say or imply that stories like "War Games", "Hush", "The Long Halloween" or "R.I.P." somehow "don't matter" because they weren't part of a kids' cartoon. That's just silly.

Animated adaptions are restricted by time limits, commercial breaks, and flat-out censorship. Comic books are not beholden to any of those things. Thus, the scope of any stories, of any character, are always going to be richer and more fulfilling on the printed page where the only "limits" are the creators' imagination. Even a very good cartoon show - and Batman: TAS definitely was that - will only ever, at best, be a "Good enough if you squint" version of what it's adapting. But any Batman fan who says, "I've seen the show, I don't need to read the books" simply won't be getting the best stories about the character, and will be doing themselves a disservice for no real reason. It's self-defeating and myopic.

Arguably, the single greatest Batman story ever took place in issue #423, "You Should'a Seen Him". It's everything great about the character in under 25 pages, and anyone who hasn't read it really can't say they're a fan. It's a great example of how the BEST stories - for just about any character - can only be found in print. Especially because most of the great single-issue stories - of which there are countless - won't ever be adapted into anything else since they're "too small", and adaptations mostly try and rework mini-series books and things like that.

Anyways, to finish making a short story long, Batman: TAS was a very good show but it was extremely far from "transplanting nearly everything from the comics". They didn't even get close, nor did they really try to. They did succeed in introducing several of their own concepts and character ideas that made it into comics canon, however, and that's a very high achievement. But it's still, at its best, only a shadow of a much larger universe full of much bigger and better stories.

neatoman
03-09-2019, 08:10 PM
Well said. And it's also pretty foolish to make claims like BTAS was the "definitive" version when new stories, characters and concepts keep being added to a comic like Batman.

For rather obvious reasons, one can't possibly claim BTAS did Damian or Hush better. Or even that they were purposely ignored.

Leo656
03-09-2019, 08:26 PM
Yep yep. Time marches on, and new, great stories just keep on rolling out. Is "Hush" better than, say, "A Lonely Place Of Dying"? That's a debate, but the fact that it's a debate worth having speaks volumes all by itself. Ten years from now, they'll still be writing stories that belong in the "Greatest Ever" category. And ten, thirty, and fifty years after that, even.

Adaptations certainly have their place, but they're each kind of forced to be a snapshot of their time and place in many ways, since they don't run forever.

Y'know what was a great story that's never gonna get an adaptation? "Mud Pack". That was a great Clayface yarn. But it only works because it acknowledges the four separate Clayfaces as well as the passage of time that allowed each of them to become individually prominent. You can't tell that story properly in another medium, you lose all of the context. I'm long overdue for a re-read of that one. It was one of my favorites as a kid. Basil Karlo creeped the hell out of me back then. He was arguably scarier than Preston Payne, or at the very least, far more sinister. And that stuff where Looker had to go into Bruce's mind to "un-break" him after Karlo's psychological torture? Pure gold.

"The Last Arkham", too. That's another modern classic that'll never be adapted, but it's a mandatory story. I could go on. So much good stuff out there.

(http://nickalive.blogspot.com/2019/02/batman-and-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles.html?m=1) New additions/confirmed characters are Keith Ferguson as Baxter Stockman and Two-Face, Brian George as Alfred, Ben Giroux as Robin, Andrew Kishino as Shredder, and Jim Meskimen as Commissioner Gordon and Scarecrow.

Jake Castorena (The Death of Superman) will direct the film and Marly Halpern-Graser (Mad, Batman Unlimited, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo) will handle the script.

Not surprised to see Shredder confirmed, but Stockman is a genuine surprise.

I like the part where they say "freakin."

Seriously though, I'm buying this day one, despite the flaws. Haven't been this eager to see a TMNT movie since Turtles Forever in 2009.

Interesting that it seems they've ditched the whole trans-dimensional element of the comic for the adaptation and instead just have the Turtles as a part of the DCU.

Yeah, that is interesting. It's as if these turtles just exist within the DC universe.
