And the Neutrinos are up to some shady business, I knew they weren't that perfect. And...in perfect parallel to what's going on with the Foot. But is Dask really that old??? It's just a question of what the "oh no" is (probably Ch'rell, though...)

Nice to see that Libby's back up on her feet and that the turtles are doing more of their own stuff.

But the kids are going to get themselves into some serious trouble. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air.

This really has me excited. The Neutrinos being included is a big shocker and I'm all in for it, I'm very interested to see how they're going to be incorporated, and a little concerned that the writers might find it hard to resolve all of these plot threads.

So happy to see so many characters included - Splinter, Jennika, Harold, Libby, Honeycutt and, as I said, the Neutrinos. Before, I'd go an entire chapter hoping one of them would pop up in the next one, but now, they all seem to be an integral part of the plot and that's pretty great. Hope Casey makes an appearance in this issue as well, always loved this version of him.

I can already guess that Raph sassing Leo isn't going to end well. To be fair, the IDW run hasn't had enough Leo vs. Raph fights by TMNT standards, has it now?

Wachter's art is great, I was worried it'd feel like a step-down from Dialynas but it really doesn't, I'm all up for him drawing the rest of City at War. I also absolutely love the way he draws Splinter, especially in that part of the panel where he's ranting about Karai.

The wait for this issue has been killing me but I'm all ready to see what IDW have in store.

I'm wondering if perhaps Maligna is about to come back on the scene

Remember how Leatherhead turned up in Vengeance, and then took another 15 issues to actually show up in the storyline proper?

This will probably be the same thing for Maligna, Null, or whoever.

CyberCubed

Yeah I instantly assumed Fugitoid was talking about Maligna. Ch'rell/Utroms/Triceratons are still on Earth and he sensed something coming in space, and Null has been shown in contact with something in space the last time she appeared and given their connection in Archie it's probably happening here too. I guess the Neutrino world is going to be attacked by space bugs soon.

Seems like a weird time for Maligna though. Hence my theory.

Speaking of Null and Maligna's connection in Archie TMNT, I seriously hope IDW doesn't skimp on Scul and Bean reimagined as more insectoid-looking aliens!

A stag beetle and a mantis shrimp would be the perfect inspiration for a new iteration of those two.

Don't worry, we won't see that plotline unfold for another 15-20 issues from now.

I'm going to agree that it seems early to have a Maligna story, and the Neutrinos are already dealing with that as it is.

Honeycutt wasn't expecting something, and probably just got news (probably from Ma'riell) that Ch'rell is freed from stasis. And Honeycutt was the first one to be concerned about letting him loose - having been the original to make the call to not release him.

The Leo vs. Raph thing didn't go as I expected. They didn't do the TMNT cliche and have them get into a heated argument or briefly start fighting, which is a win in my books. I'm so happy Leo just kind of went "Aw man".

This arc feels like long set-up so far, I guess it's still awhile before we get into the meat of the action.

I haven't looked forward to something this much in a long time. While I'm anxious to see how everything in New York plays out, the whole Dimension X scene, to me, adds a whole new dimension (literally & figuratively) to this arc. If what is happening in Dimension X is not directly connected with events in New York, is it possible a whole different player is gonna be on the field, so to speak?

Talk about "action, not words".
Especially after Jennika getting stabbed after a big ol word dump.

Looked a lot like when Saki stabbed Casey, tbh...echoes of the past leaking through there.

We're probably going to be fed drops at a time of the Dimension X side, but wow. What a way to start City at War.

But the coolest thing of all, WE HAVE A MAP OF TERRITORIES. Not sure what the blue area is, especially since there's no yellow representing mafia/gangs on the map. But it's so cool to see. And will probably change as the story goes along.

Igglet
04-24-2019, 09:07 AM
This is a great way for them to start the arc. Huuuuge props to the team. So much good stuff here.

I don't know if it's just my personal taste changing, but I've enjoyed Wachter's art a LOT more than I expected this issue. I couldn't be happier that he's the one doing this arc.

The issue was actually really intense. I think most of us could've expected Jennika getting stabbed, mostly due to the FCBD preview, but man, it was pulled off really well. And I've just started to like her.

Raph's probably the part of the arc I'm most excited about. I want to see how far he's gonna be pushed, how far he's going to go. I get the feeling that he might join the Purple Dragons for real, even?

I bet you that, at some point, Karai's gonna take over most of the city and the entire territory map will just be painted red (or whatever color she's gonna be) to display how screwed the turtles are.

CylonsKlingonsDaleksOhMy
04-24-2019, 10:33 AM
All in all, I liked it. But I'm most excited to finally, FINALLY get a Raph/Hob team-up, which definitely is foreshadowed. BRING IT ON! :tcool:

I love that Stockman's mayoral campaign is still on the rise. And I guess we're getting April and Casey back together after Jennika's dead. :trolleye:

Karai and her mutants wiping out the mob was pretty great. I'm quite curious to see how the Turtles will fare against Karai's henchmutants in a fight. Bludgeon can't be blinded again, and Koya can't be grounded again, so the old tactics are useless. And, of course, Ocho and the red ninja sword of hatred definitely seem to be driving Karai's vicious and merciless approach.

We've finally got a Turtle Van. Which I'm okay with, because IDW has really held off on gadgets for Donnie. And having Harold and Libby help him design it makes it okay for me. :tsmile:

RIP, Jennika. I won't miss you, but I appreciate your sacrifice. I think I would have liked you better if you weren't being used as the obvious rebound for Casey.

I haven't read this series anywhere near consistently since #50.

I think when the collection for this arc comes out, I will use it as a barometer for whether I want to jump back on monthly. I do this every once in a while for this series, but nothing has pulled me back in, as of yet.

The art of this issue was really good, so many scenes stood out. Especially most of the art on Koya/Bludgeon/Ocho, I can't believe how detailed those shots were. Also liked the art on the humans faces particularly Karai/Jennika/April, etc.

In terms of story I guess the arc is full underway, but I guess it really does make the Leo macro and the previous events of Karai wanting a peaceful transition of power kinda pointless. Even Leo/Koya's fight meant nothing now with Koya forgiving him. Ah well. Also kinda surprised we haven't seen Bebop/Rocksteady yet, Karai technically has 5 animal henchmen at her disposal now along with Natsu. Karai has essentially gone past the point of no return, so I wonder what will happen to her in the coming issues.

I'm also glad they left Bishop/Metalhead out of this issue. They would have just wasted page time here and weren't needed. The Neutrino/Fugitoid page could have been left for a future issue too for that matter. I prefer them focusing on the story at hand then constantly setting up future arcs we won't see unfold for months/years.

The whole Raph thing made me realize something that I kinda noticed back in the Christmas issue and the Macros, that maybe the Turtles are slowly coming to a point where they may go their own separate ways. There were obvious hints here of Raph joining the Mutanimals plus we see Don constantly hanging with Harold and Libby. Mikey being very protective of the orphans may very well lead to something down the road. And of course Leo with his complex relationship with Karai. If it fact Splinter dies (which if the spirit in Shredder in Hell is really Hamato Yoshi and not a spirit posing as him, would then indicate that he has died) maybe that'll be the catalyst for the Turtles to go their separate ways, just like in Mirage volume 4.
I say this jokingly, but maybe when Shredder comes back as the Dragon, he'll take Hob and Bludgeon and turn them into Verminator X and Armaggon (making them that trio from Archie), thus Raph will take over the Mutanimals (like he did of the Foot in Image).

I've thought about that possibility once or twice, maybe as the new status quo after #100. Who knows, it's quite possible.

I could see this being Raph's "start of darkness" too, putting him on the path to taking over and eventually fighting others for the mantle of the Shredder. I've always wanted to see IDW tackle a sprawling, epic arc along those lines.

You know...now that you mention that, it feels like 101 will have everything changed, but the turtles themselves right back where they started.

Namely, just Raphael on his own trying to make his way in the world while his brothers worry about him.

The problem was that we already knew how this would end, Jenika would be stabbed by Karai because she refused to join Karai. The lingering question is whether she like Casey Jones will survive. If someone else has to die I fine with Jenika dying for service to the overall story.

Only way Karai is stopped is by Shredder coming back?

But the coolest thing of all, WE HAVE A MAP OF TERRITORIES. Not sure what the blue area is, especially since there's no yellow representing mafia/gangs on the map. But it's so cool to see. And will probably change as the story goes along.

Yeah, I'll cop to that... we added the map last minute and that just got past me. No excuses, just a mistake! The blue areas are the mafia controlled (the yellow circle should be blue in the key). It'll be fixed in the next issue!

And fwiw there were no minis planned after Shredder before #100. We wanted some room to breathe and put focus on #100.

Offline I am called The Pun-isher for a reason.

If you recall at the time of Pete's creation it was Michelangelo and Raphael who checked in on Hob and Slash. We saw Michelangelo individually interact with the full group now its Raphael's turn.

So we have a comedic character in Pete will we get a serious character named Kevin? Laird was always serious while Kevin is laid back, switching their supposed personalities could be fun.

I am pretty sure Jennika is going to die. Not just bc she got shanked

The reason is... Jennika is currently the romantic interest of Casey, but usually April. April and Casey usually end up together and for that to happen Jennika needs to be written out some how either by dying or some other narrative reason. As much as I like Jennika I have a feeling she will die, not just bc of the reasons I have already listed, but bc I think her death will essentially be the catalyst for this entire City at War arc.

Really good issue, great writing. As others have said I feel like the Nutrino and fugitoid penal was wasted space, but I guess it does serve a purpose for future issues according to you know who

My only real complaint is why do the artist keep drawing turtles with bird beaks??? I know it's actually more realist, but I personally hate the look. I am sure others agree with me or I at least hope

Late to the party with this post, but I just have to say, as a long time fan of Karai this issue disappointed me greatly.

I mean the issue was good, but it saddens me to see how despite making it seem otherwise for so long, Karai it turns out is a lot more like her grandfather then maybe even she believed.

I mean asking to talk with Jennika like that only to run her through like that, there is absolutely no honor in what she did there.

Well, while I greatly enjoy seeing a more villainous take on Karai, I do think that we'll eventually get back to a more sympathetic portrayal. The Evil Red Sword of Glowing Hatred is obviously influencing her somehow.

All opinions are of course totally valid, but I feel compelled to share my own: I think that in Karai's eyes honor went out the door when Splinter refused the gauntlet challenge, something even Shredder accepted. Splinter had his chance to play by the book, and to Karai anything is game now.

Honestly though, it makes sense at that point. It's been a long time coming, and I think she has indeed been more like Saki than she realized this whole time.

Especially since, y'know...she's carrying an "evil" magic sword that has a corrupting force.

Yeah, and besides, we've barely scratched the surface with her. She's the main antagonist of the final arc leading up to #100, at least as far as we know. She's absolutely going to get even more fleshed out as time goes by. Besides, with Saki being built up to come back, her turning into the new Shredder, being manipulated by Kitsune, seems like a solid concept.

That's a fair point. I was honestly quite surprised to see the Gauntlet refused. It makes sense both in terms of story development and Splinter's character arc... but it was probably not the wisest choice for Splinter to make. :tgrin:

Maybe even two Shredders are gonna appear. The one with the Takeshi spirit becoming the dragon and the Saki spirit becoming an ally of the turtles, judging by what's going on over in Shredder in Hell. With the extreme spiritual nature of that miniseries, I wouldn't be surprised for the two different spirits to branch off and become completely separate from each other......if that's what's happening, I'm not that great at grasping spiritual elements and stories.

Though I doubt that's the direction they'll go with, I wouldn't be too surprised if they did. Your theory certainly does make sense.

If my theory is right (and I'm not saying it is), I'm guessing the Dragon/Takeshi will inhabit Saki's body while Saki might inhabit Splinter's body (that's assuming by this point where Shredder in Hell takes place Splinter has died).

Its gonna start looking like that first (or second) episode of Back to the Sewers in the 4kids cartoon with Ch'rell, the real Shredder, and Cyber Shredder throwing down
Speaking of which, the IDW series has the first two characters, but not the third....I think it's time Cyber Shredder appears. I nominate Metalhead for that position , heck, I'll nominate Jennika for that if in fact her soul is placed inside a robotic body. And if that happens, it'll be the perfect chance to have Lady Shredder(Karai) throw down with Cyber Shredder (Jennika). :D

The thing I think is funny about how many Shredders there's going to be...is that I don't think Ch'rell is going to become Shredder at all. As if he's going to take up the mantle of the guy that set his 'beloved leader' on fire and messed up all of his plans; someone that his leader absolutely despised.

I agree, here in IDW I see Ch'rell just staying Ch'rell....on the flip side, we've undoubtedly got so much story to before this series ends that ya never know, maybe pose as Shredder just for an ambush?

Isn't that more or less the reason why Krang started wearing the alien warlord's body, though? We've barely seen IDW Ch'rell and his personality yet, could be he's the type to get a kick out of parading his superior's enemy around as a gruesome trophy to show the whole world who came out on top in the end.

Or something. There's a ton of ways such a development could go, that's the whole fun of writing.

Yeah, honestly we currently know so little about where they're going with Ch'rell that they could quite literally do anything with him. Pretty hard to speculate when we've so little to work with.

Ah, yeah...that's actually a good point.

Krang never really took Traxus' title, just took the power and used the body as armor. And also killed Traxus himself, which gave more power to using the body.

Ch'rell would have to kill Oroku Saki himself for the idea to work, and at this point, I'm not sure there'd be much point in trying to establish animosity between the two of them. Saki's already dead, so as far as he'd be concerned, the job had been done for him. The window to do anything with Shredder is gone.

More likely for him to be in the market for an alligator skin suit.

Not if he becomes convinced that it would be advantageous to pose as a human crime boss with a foothold (heh) in the underworld in order to advance his agenda. Krang did try the open warfare approach to conquering Earth and it didn't work out so well for him, he was met with opposition every step of the way just like Saki warned him he would... And that's when the Turtles had way less allies to help stop him than they have now. Ch'rell doing the same thing would feel repetitive, even if he doubled down on the military might. He doesn't need Saki's body per se, just the guise of the Shredder.

Or maybe IDW is gonna bring to fruition that whole thing that was intended to happen during the Fast Forward season of the 4kids cartoon and have Ch'rell take over the body of a Triceraton.

There IS a Triceraton just sitting around in island jail that would be pretty easy to take an opportunity on.
(One that he's eventually going to find out tried to kill his sister no less. He might be mad at her, but family is family)

You got a good point there. If that happens, maybe that'll lead to Zog reappearing and saving the Triceraton's. (I say that partially jokingly since if I recall I don't remember Zog dying at the end of the 2014 Annual, which I guess means he's still running around in the multiverse somewhere, which begs the question....is he gonna come back at some point?)

IDK, Zog and Krang just seem like far bigger parallels to one another than what's on the surface.

Namely in being isolated in their effort to save their people, going mad as a result, and dying while in a state beyond mental help. Krang literally and Zog mentally. (Also having a crazy loyal subordinate officer)

The Zog the Triceratons knew is gone. Very, very gone. And it would have to take a truly extra-dimensional Zog, but he still wouldn't their Zog.

Just give him some psychotropic serum and he'll be fine, like Slash back when he was alive. :D

That should have been done for Pete a long time ago. Yet Bobby says it is purposely forgotten about because Pigeon Pete is comedic relief. In-story explanation though? Limited to the one?

Wasn't the serum used on Slash because his mutation was unstable due to contamination, thus creating his own instability?

Zog was born stable (actually coming from a set of parents) and only lost himself through constant fighting in the Battle Nexus. Pigeon Pete is missing a few cards, but he's not "unstable" to the degree Slash or Zog were. And aside from his own degree of I'm not sure the psychotropic serum would help with either of them.

Speaking of the Neutrinos (and back to issue 93 ) I hope we don't have to wait 20 issues before we find out what Honeycutt saw on the screen that was a problem.
