View Full Version : This is the best TMNT animated series in terms of animation

I been binging this show for the past month and while the writing isn't the best I do think in terms of animation its second to none when it comes to the animated series. Does it mean its fluid 24/7, not really it does do the anime thing where 80% of the animation is meh but we do get Sakuga scenes once an episode, however the amount of passion to each frame of animation is astounding. While again its not fluid there are a lot of funny and inventive ways the animators do to give every frame personality.
Take this still for example.

I mean look at the composition you wouldn't need to watch the series and you would know who is in charge.
Or this I mean look at that camera work and perspective.

So yeah ROTTMNT is basically if you get Trigger to animate an episode of TMNT.

I agree, just watching the intro even is a blast from start to finish.
Its definetly the most colourful tmnt show out there and action scenes especially are fantastic.

True, the best animation and the facial expressions of the characters are perfect. You can tell what each character is thinking. I love the details they put in the facial expressions. :D

Good animation alone can’t save a show if the writing is poor. I will say it is admit is is animated well at times.

I think it's absolutely cool and fine if people honestly like the animation. But honestly, I can't wrap my head around enjoying it at all, let alone the statement that the Rise is the best animated TMNT so far. That statement almost sounds like shill reporting or access media support.
But, if this thread is an honest observation by a couple of fans, that's completely cool. I liked Aeon Flux. I got a buddy who thinks I'm nuts for it.

I do appreciate the animation example you've cited. Almost does make me want to watch past the first episode.

I think that it's even more damning to the show that something as amazing and high quality as Batman / TMNT came out during it's airtime.
TMNT 2012 would've surfed with that wave without a problem, but Batman/TMNT juxtaposed against Rise completely.
I'm not trying to hijack the thread by crapping on Rise, but it invited the convo and it's a good convo with some interesting points so far.

Okay, so we're actually just talking in terms of the visuals... I can agree there places where it looks nice, in the moments that it actually wants to look fluid.
That said...it really does far too much of that choppy, jumpy frame skipping too often that just kills it for me in animation. Especially when used for bypassing a walk cycle. Annoys me and feels lazy when animation jumps frames (including some obvious loops of them) in a way that I feel really only belongs in GIF animation clips online. (But hey... I guess 'Rise' makes GIF creation pretty effortless.)
But it's one of the reasons that most anime bugs me as well, so in the end it's less about 'Rise' itself and must more about a difference of opinion on animation tastes and not a style I like for the TMNT.
Honestly, if put to a vote (and 2012 excluded being a different medium), 2003 (at least most seasons) would have my vote for fluidity and detail.

Fair enough like I said before this show is great when it comes to perspective and composition so the jumpy frames don't bother me as much and seeing how we get one great animated scene per episode is actually kind of a feat imo. Also off topic but check out Mao Mao, that seems to be something you enjoy.

As much as I love 2k3 its kinda bland for me in the animation department, its not bad but there isn't a lot of interesting things about it.

Rise is amaziiiiing, and not just the stellar animation.
the usage of fluid animation and strong key poses is a absolute animator eye candy to watch.
Great use of composition and striking visuals. And it's fun, the animation can alternate from serious to comedic on a dime.
And non-sakuga scenes still are great to watch as they really give us some expressive characters.
The show really fires from all cylinders and delivers.
And Donnie's eyebrows are the best

Yeah the animation is great and all, but I'm sick of seeing the Ren face (from Ren & Stimpy). First time was funny, but now they are all doing it in each episodes...
And the animation syle seems to change at time too.
The episode with the demoliton derby was good but the next one with the dogtag had some weird faces again with wacky animation. It's like it's not the same person directing each episodes (didnt watch the credits)

I mean considering that TV tends to have different directors per episodes that's pretty much the case, Abe Audish directed the former and Alan Wan directed the latter.

Oh so Alan Wan is the one with the weird animation and wacky face. Gotcha.
The problem is that normally, you try to not make it obvious to the watcher that there were different directors. Here, it doesnt fly. And I'm usualy bad at noticing it in other shows.

I thought they were gonna reveal Shredder or something.
They have hinted at Shredder, they have the two Foot Goons gathering pieces of the Shredder's armor and they are going to give it to Baron Draxum for some reason. Likely so he can become a corporeal vessel for the Shredder where as Draxum just thinks he's getting some kick-ass mystic armor just because.
Splinter's family in this version had Ronin Warriors thing going on where their ancestor defeated the Shredder, and for generations, they have been standing as guardians both to prepare for the Shredder's return, but also prevent it from happening. Splinter himself saw the legend of the Shredder as BS and didn't take his families legacy seriously, so became a famous stunt actor instead.
IndigoErth
11-08-2019, 01:09 PM
Yeah, I've been thinking that Draxum himself may just be the new Shredder, but via being possessed by the demon armor or some demonic "Shredder" spirit attached to it.
I vaguely recall a repeat I ran across the other day mentioning something about the armor(?) having possessed or taken over the previous wearer...or something like that. So Draxum may have the same fate?
Yeah the animation is great and all, but I'm sick of seeing the Ren face (from Ren & Stimpy). First time was funny, but now they are all doing it in each episodes...
A part of me almost feels inspired to take clips of all the dumb facial expressions, edit them all together, and drop the looped Patrick portion of the Spongebob Idiot Friends (https://youtu.be/3fm_-mRpC6U) song behind it.

PApagreg, thank you for this thread!:)
there is so much flag over this show and everybody has an opinion that he NEEDS to share with everyone here..and in my observation in most of these cases it is a rather negative opinion about this show.
ALSO very often the case-- and take this also as just an observation-- coming from people who were enthusiastic about the 2k12 turtles show and are sad that it ended and this has taken its place now.
be that as it may, I didn't know myself what to expect of this show before it premiered.. I tried to remind myself to just stay open and loose about it and see what they would be coming up with.
then came the first glimpses at the character designs and we got to know that they changed up the format towards a much shorter running time per episode and I could understand that the look of what would be the new and coming turtles show was maybe much more than only a little bit different from what most would have expected or even hoped for..
I mean we have seen these horrible soulless michael bay abominations being the turtles at the movies for this generation of kids and overall fans and every further straying away from the original look of these characters from the comics or the first animated show or the first movies etc was testing and straining our patience:)hahahaha
but , again--to me-- the fact that the show would return to traditional 2d animation was very intriguing. had the 2k12 show a problem with overtly reusing the same character models and backgrounds over and over again (for issues of costs no doubt) here was a way that could give us everything you could ever imagine for only the writers and animators and designers imaginations were the limit.
I really immensely enjoy rise of the tmnt for it cracks me up from time to time, the characters are very funny and loveable. the adventures offer change and that also includes moments when they seem to return to familiar grounds for us.
the action sequences are always very dynamic. there is so much happening in one such episode that rewatching them is fun, because one can really find something new with each visit.
the relationship is charming. yeah, splinter...man, this was such a set up and sooooo many peoppkle fell for it complaining endlessly in comments and videos about how this splinter is such a lously father figure and so on, but of people would just keep on watching the last few episodes I think many would see that their frustration (over a cartoon no less) was maybe a little premature and that they too can have fun with these characters.
anyway, PApagreg, you are absolutely right when you say that there is so much love and detail in every frame of this show! this is something I also came to see when watching and rewatching my dvd of the show.I wanted to pause it to do something and was stunned by a beautiful freeze frame. after that I paused the dvd on many occasion just to snap a pic or two of something I found funny or excitingly illustrated etc and bing--there was always a beautiful surprise waiting.
so, in that regard the show is so much fun to me, too..
anyway, I dont think I can change anyones opinion nor would I be especially interested to do so, I just wanted to support the positive perspective on this show that I can find so much joy in myself.
thanks again for this thread!:)

I take it as legit. One man's garbage is another man's meat and all. Though... none of this is really intended for "men" at all, or anyone remotely approaching adulthood... so... not sure?

I don't feel a person is trolling for showing appreciation for animation, we all have our preferences.
So far as comparing the 4, different styles, different preference but between type/tone/age etc they will be different.
With some new toons I find myself thinking that someone needs to shade/add detail a little :) but that is what some people like at the moment it seems, I prefer a little more detail/colour. Rise however is not one of these. I haven't liked some of the facial expressions that I have seen (mentioned in the thread) but they are expressive and detailed.

I believe Rise of the TMNT is an attempt to serve as a bridge between the 2012–2017 Nickelodeon cartoon (which is mainly based on older source material) and upcoming cartoons and comics with more drastical changes. Same with the IDW comics and the Platinim Dunes films.

A bridge to even further drastic departures? Dear god I hope not.
At that point, people who are so desperate to make something so different than what it is aught to go work on something else that's new and not tied down by meanie fans criticizing choices to eff up existing and beloved characters in an endless cycle to reinvent the wheel.
I will never understand what's so hard about allowing the Turtles to remain who they are and focus on giving them new stories from another period in their lives. If someone is bored with who they are as people, then maybe they need a break from the Turtles for a while.
IDW and PD may have gone with a different origin to some extent, but cripe, at least the TMNT still seem to be largely who they normally are as individuals.
But I/we digress, this thread was about the animation style/quality and I don't really see what's troll-ish about that.

From my experiences in the workforce and a myriad of other unique environments, I believe that Rise is an example of a workplace idea that was given support because other contributors were to fearful of decrying the idea. I can imagine a brainstorming meeting where someone who subscribes to the "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" mentality, asserted the idea and made a manipulative case for "change", "bold new ideas" and not "fearing to try". And because that kind of framing was used, no one wanted to put the breaks on it for fear of being painted as "someone against change". And the studio ran with the ball.
I've seen many ideas in the workforce arena that everyone knew were terrible, but if the culture in that arena is manipulative then you can't say the idea is bad because you'll be labeled either as a Luddite, or as some kind of hater by other ladder-climbers in the room. So in those environments, the ladder-climber (e.g., manipulator) will rise to the top by throwing any **** they can at the wall to see what sticks and make themselves a workplace hero. And in the end you've got a wall covered in ****.
Now I can tell you that the phenomena I've outlined here is 100% true and accurate. Only human resource bimbos and employees stuck in middle-management will say that it is not. However, the opinion part of this is where I'm speculating that this is what happened with this show. But it is very easy to see how Rise could have been a manipulator's marketing pitch as "bold direction" to insert the IP into the current animation zeitgeist, & "bring an 'aging IP' into modern relevancy" when in fact they are just jumping on the train of what other shows today are doing. Even when it doesn't work.

Or maybe and just here me out, because the last series pretty much referenced almost every piece of TMNT media at least once maybe the writers decided to experiment and also use different animation techniques.

Sure. Absolutely that is a possibility on the more positive side of the spectrum. But in that case, they did (arguably) a terrible job. For example, TMNT 2007 did the same thing yet still managed to look gorgeous while not only maintaining the feel of the franchise, but also maintained the key tenets as loose continuity. And the turtles fought interdimensional gargoyle monsters in that flick, without Shredder as well.
Coincidentally what you've said here is probably the most succinct and understandable explanation for Rise that I've seen. But it still spells fear from the creators to me - they didn't know what else to do. They weren't prepared.

You are right about the target audience though.... The show isn't geared towards my demographic. And I'm not a fan of this iteration, so I'm actually well aligned in this.
But the show isn't geared towards you either. But you will defend it or have an issue with someone discussing their thoughts. That sounds like a regression on your part. So remember that next time you have vitriol towards what was otherwise a relatively balanced discussion in the first place.
Rise isn't geared towards either of you as well, whether or not either of you are both "grown-ass dudes" or "grown-ass chicks". But you guys liking the cartoon doesn't make your opinions on it more valid. In some ways your opinions could be less valid because you are wildly entertained by a show, as you said, meant for people possibly two generations removed from you.

But the show isn't geared towards you either. But you will defend it or have an issue with someone discussing their thoughts. That sounds like a regression on your part. So remember that next time you have vitriol towards what was otherwise a relatively balanced discussion in the first place.
You're missing the point completely, no one is having an issue with anyone discussing their thoughts about the animation itself, even if they aren't the target demographic.
But when a thread gets de-railed with people being accussed of being shills for liking a show's animation, a nonsense post about how Rise was made under a climate of corporate fear which is not relevant to the topic at all, and half the posts demanding that this is a troll thread, then the discussion is far from being "relatively well balanced".

I understand that, but the posts I cited appeared in proximity to my discussion with the OP without clarification. I think it's a safe assumption that those posts were directed, in part at least by the discussion I was having. And if they weren't, then those posts should've clarified.
But either way, the point I made still stands in response. Liking the show or otherwise does not increase anyone's validity or outrage points. People citing that your opinion is negated because content wasn't made for you is either a manipulation or an idiot's argument. I'm not having that, so there was a dose of reality for anyone who takes that position. It wasn't made for you either, but yet you like it.
But on that note, to be clear I never took a stand or even cared if this was created as a troll thread. And so the real point is that even amidst all the BS, my discussion was well balanced. It's not that I should recognize or jump on board or against the shill thread nonsense. And I did say "shill" earlier. because the OP was gushing over the show to such an extreme that it seemed like a manipulation. But I didn't take a hard nosed stance on it - I used it as an allusion and I stand by it. I had the discussion.
For my part, everything I've said is 100% cogent.

One thing I like is that the four different TMNT cartoons, have all been animated in their own separate style.

You are right about the target audience though.... The show isn't geared towards my demographic. And I'm not a fan of this iteration, so I'm actually well aligned in this.

Oh snap. I guess that’s that then.
I think it’s also fair to note, I’m not interested in shutting down a rational or light hearted discussion born of a love for Rise, but I am irritated to think this entire thread is some kind of ironic post, heaping praise as a joke, to troll the users here, and also somehow support the very thing most of us are cringing over.
It’s tantamount to farting in public, and smiling.

How the hell is this an ironic post, most people even those who don't like Rise admit the animation is good and if you disagree then say so or maybe even explain why you the animation isn't up to your standards but saying that this is a troll thread makes you look like the troll.

More farting in public. Doubling down on outrageous statements, further stirring the pot, and topping it off with the good ole “I’m not, you are”. Its not funny anymore. If a new show is on the way, it should be a united front from all fan, that we don’t want anything even approaching the Cal Arts style, anywhere near this franchise again. It might also be said, **** the younger demo. Tmnt isn’t for them, it’s for us.

You are beyond stupid if you think this looks anything like "Cal Arts"(which isn't even a thing when cartoons have trends like all the time) most cartoons have a round and soft feature while Rise focuses on more angular designs a la the 2000s. You are free to dislike it but don't say this thread is "farting in public" when people just have a different opinion you are not the arbiter of what fans like.

Oh f#$% of with your gate keeping TMNT is for the demographic that gives them the most toy sales which are kids

You're not going to bring me down to your level.
TMNT is not for children, we all know it, we all know the history, so let's not regurgitate or retread the dead damned horse. I'm making a point, and it's that the kids version flopped. Your logic suggests Joker shouldn't be R rated, because it won't sell toys. TMNT is Joker. Not necessarily dark and gritty, not some edgelord stuff, not Bayturtles, but played straight, with the serious themes and story the mirage books did so well. Serious action packed adult themed fun. Kids aren't paying attention to TMNT unless their parents force it, just like kids could give a damn about Star Wars. Turtles are a disco party for the OG's, and it's time to bring it back to basics.

I’m honestly not trying to turn this thread into a 2012 vs 2018 debate, but even before RISE was a twinkle in its creators eye I always thought that 2012 was so bland. So, so bland. It had 2 colours – grey and grey. The human characters design and animation was quite frankly terrible. Reminded me of that CGI guy from the Dire Straights video ‘Money for Nothing’. OK maybe I'm being harsh there, try watching the video for Def Leppard 'Let's Get Rocked'. Yes, the human characters compare to CGI from 1992. The City scape and backgrounds gave me the impression the designers were being lazy. The Turtle designs were great, but for me they were they only good thing about that show. Since episode 1 I always had the feeling all the effort was put into the 4 Turtles design and animation, everything else was done on budget or with little interest.
I would actually like to get hold of that Ciro Nieli art book, it might give me a better understanding of those negative points I raised above.
On the other side, whenever I watch Rise, it excites my brain. Sparks it into life. I’m constantly pausing or rewinding to get a second look or a more detailed examination. Rewatching episodes. The show constantly raises a smile to my face with the things that happen or the things that are said. Originality. Fluidity. Humour. Angles (some GREAT angles).
I will admit I haven’t seen the BATMAN/TMNT animated film so I can’t compare Rise to that one, but with the ‘choppy animation’ all I can say is that is the style they are going for. I don’t believe it’s due to ‘budget’. I enjoy Rise immensely, I may even go as far to say it’s fast becoming my favourite TMNT series.

man, I hear you!:)
Although I have enjoyed the 2k12 series for its time at least for a long while for me there was always something missing that excited me..RISE gives me that and it feels just like you described it above...the living animation, the colors, the diversity and the fun.couldn't have written it better.
ps: yeah, ace duck!!!!

The way people describe this one visually... I have to be honest, I can't get past the thought that this series is for some fans what Lisa Frank products were for 12-year-old girls in the 90s. If that's someone's thing, then more power to 'em. But both products are relying on that flashy brain stimulation for attention and viewer addiction like a visual/mental sugar high, rather than relying more heavily on substance.
Too much aimed at kids tries to use that flashy hyper nonsense to get their attention anymore. While 'Rise' may be one of the more tame ones in most cases story-wise, the 'hyperness' of it is the primary reason why I'd prefer my nephew not see this one until he's older and would prefer to start showing him the original series one of these days since it is by far much calmer in tone. At 3, this kid is hyper enough and does not need the over stimulation that shows like this aim for. (Not that it's made for kids as young as 3, but still part of that trend, even in some shows meant his age group.)

I don't see how this show is that flashy especially compared to the 2k12 version, I mean both versions technically use anime effects its that 2k12 was more 2000s while Rise is more modern. I don't know maybe its because I watch anime like Pop Team Epic, Panty and Stocking and whatever Trigger comes out but I just see Rise as a 6 out of the hyper meter.
I mean if you want hyper and flashy watch Hazbin Hotel, or don't because I don't think you will like it.
