Nice to see 2020 kicking off with a new mini after this year has been sorely lacking in that departament, and more Jennika character development is always a good thing. I wonder if we might go back to meet her family?

Could be. Brahm did the short story of her "origin" in TMNT U. Looking forward to 2020 now!

"Jennika has always been a fascinating character"
:tlol:
Um, no. She's not been. But I am looking forward to her becoming interesting and fleshed out. Her backstory really put me to sleep, and I think she is in dire need of some character development.
So far, the most interesting thing about her is that she mutated. I'm really looking forward to her actually becoming interesting. :tsmile:

Her mutation and how she is facing life as a mutant is interesting, but I hope it is kept as unique, we have an unknown amount of citizens from the mutagen bomb facing the same exact issue.
This is cool, but given IDW's penchant for looking at previous publication, I'm surprised that they didn't go with an oversized one-shot to sort of indoctrinate the character into the legacy of doing Turtle-specific one-shots.
It's not a make or break by any means, but I just think it would've been a neat way to mate-up with previous books like it.

Well a three issue mini-series would equate roughly to same amount of pages each of the four turtles got across their micro and macro issues (one single issue and one double issue). But I guess that's kinda pedantic

I get the feeling most of 2020 will focus on Jennika in a major way. We can already tell issue 101+ focuses on her and her friendship with Mona Lisa, and now this 3-issue mini.
Could be interesting, but then again it runs dangerously close to a "Poochy" type scenario from The Simpsons, or the Scrappy Doo, of the franchise. Hopefully they can avoid those pitfalls and justify a 5th mutant turtle.

This is dope. She really needs the development.
On a related note, I think mutating her in #96 was a terrible choice tbh. I get why they did it, but it probably should have waited for #100, or even #98. When you introduce a new TMNT, that requires you to put them into the spotlight for the foreseeable future, but honestly, since her mutation, Jennika's part in the arc has been very minor. This doesn't mean she's doomed to be meh for all eternity, I just think her "introduction" was really weak.

I tend to agree. But the mutation is the most interesting thing that's happened yet with Jennika, so I don't mind. Jennika was pretty boring as a human... hopefully the mutation fixes that.
Jennika's mutation feels like Donatello's resurrection in "Vengeance"... really rushed amidst the big conflict that was supposed to be the focus.

I'd rather she get a solo side series than take all of the focus in the next few story arcs. I think this is going to serve the story well...

I'm just glad we're getting more mini's, the narrative really slows to crawl when we only get 12 issues a year.
Yeah it’s good there’s a secondary book. There’s too many stories and characters for just 1 monthly book. I also expect Sophie is going to do her own thing and a lot of Tom’s story threads are going to be set aside for a while. Null in 2021/22 is my guess.

Baxter Stockman is stuck supporting mutants despite initially thinking the five turtles and Splinter were his possessions with the blackmail puppeting his mayoral position and the fact the people that got him into office were the ones mutated by Hob. Perhaps if Baxter is able to turn the tables on April and break from his forced position that would come eventually and end his time as mayor.

When shareholders are publically calling for sale of a company, I'd place bets that I am right. When Jennika disappears in a time warp, or an alternate dimension, or is kiiled off, or joins the Muteanimals, or is spun off for her own solo adventure, you'll have to contend, STUNT. She will not remain, the addition is transient, to boost sales, nothing more.
I'd also add this isn't what most people would consider to be good writing. Sensationalism, is just that, and should be acknowledged and treated as such.
Nice to see 2020 kicking off with a new mini

Oh, come on... Out of all your doom-and-gloom predictions, that one's the least significant and the least surprising. Pretty much everyone - including Casey and April, Shredder, Karai, Krang, and Bebop and Rocksteady (twice!) - have been given their own minis or solo adventures under IDW. Jennika is supposed to be an important character like the others I just mentioned, so of course she'd get one too.

Judging by the scenes from 98 and one back some time ago, I'm starting to think that maybe Baxter and April might start a romantic relationship eventually. It's crazy but it might happen. Plus, in the Don Macro, theres that one splash page when Donnie puts the helmet on and he sees various possible futures. One of them is a shadowy figure (probably Baxter) sitting at a table with American flags on it flanked by Foot Ninja. If that is Baxter, maybe hes gonna hire the Foot as his security (a la the Utroms in Mirage vol 4) to protect him from what's going down in the city. But I doubt Baxter is going anywhere soon. He will probably be mayor for the foreseeable future.

The thing is, everyone knows that comics were written for men, more often than not, with white heroes. It IS what happened, and it might really make a good chunk of characters from the past harder to relate to if that isn't you.
But to take that specific feeling and exploit it, as a cash grab, is rotten. I mean, that's morally bankrupt, in the same way that Valentines day is morally bankrupt. This is band-aide solutions to a bigger issue, that isn't really going to do much more than become a wedge issue, and effectively, drive dollars over the short term into the publishers hands. Its not healthy for TMNT at all.
maybe a female turtle is a dream come true, but I'm still saying it's a rug, they're going yank, as soon as it falls out of fashion, which is not how legacies are built.
Andrew NDB
11-12-2019, 12:34 AM
I don't think at all the creation of Jennika at IDW, particularly as a new female TMNT is coming from any bad place. If I had to solely plan out 100+ issues of a TMNT thing... eventually I'd probably hit that spot as a possibility. Now, personally, I'd avoid it, as maybe the biggest thing that makes the TMNT resonate with me is their loneliness. They're the last of their kind, when they breathe their last breaths, that's it... kaput. It's sad but it's what it is. It gives them a unique property in every story they're in.
But that's not at all what IDW TMNT is. It's not what it's pretended to be. We have tons of mutants in it. There was even a "mutagen bomb" recently, apparently, and there are even more widespread mutants. So that whole "alone" aspect is out the window, as has been even before that. Why not a female TMNT, in this particular universe, then? I don't hate this universe, but I get it.
I mean, I worry what the larger Viacom/Paramount media might try and mine from things and in what shape, but that's about it.

They can create a whole battalion of mutant turtles, if they like, but I just can't even begin to see it from any other view than, "we need more female representation". I also don't actually see that as bad either, but she'll never be one of them, because she had a whole human life first, and that in and of itself separates her out, makes her different. Sure, you can tell that story, but it opens the door - Casey could now become a turtle, April, Baxter... they can all be Turtles with a magical blood transfusion.
I kind of hate that in and of itself. but not to get off track - this story goes in one direction from here on out; how do you get Jennika's humanity back. So, this is transient, and she will revert at some point, just like Donnie didn't stay dead, but the actual narrative, is that being a turtle, is not preferable, to being human. Parallels can be drawn to things like, "slumming it is fun for a while, but eventually you'll come to your senses." or, "I helped out in Africa for a summer once" or "I raised money for a charity by going on a diet three years ago."
The Turtles, never lost a life to live the one they do now. This is who they are, and all they really know. Perhaps the "what if" has come up, or maybe they have dreams of being regular turtles, who knows, but that is a major difference, one that keeps her on the outside of the crew, no matter what color they have her wear (those panels were the height of cringe).
and I disagree with respect to stories. 100 books is a lot, but the female turtle is not a must do, it's a hail mary play, reserved for desperate times, as I said before.

I don't see it that way. That risk is there, yes, and I won't deny a small part of me is concerned about how next year will play out and whether or not Jennika sort of hijacks the comic, but fundamentally I don't see it that way. A female turtle isn't necessarily taboo, on the contrary: it's one of those things that's been done (spectacularly bad) before and that a more qualified team of writers will always be interested in taking a crack at, see if they can make it work better than the first time around. Much like how almost every Spider-Man animated show eventually has a go at the Clone Saga, and seeing as how we're in a comic book forum, I don't think I need to go into details about the reception that got in the comics... And so far, so good. The only element I could possibly see as a misstep was the timing of her mutation. It should've got its own arc instead of being smack dab in the middle of City at War. But what's done is done. Mind you, even Jennika hijacking this comic from the OG Turtles for a time wouldn't be anything new, most other characters have done it too at some point.
In short, a see only a character being trated as every other character before her has been treated. Hardly cause for doomsaying.

Wow. Ninjister and a few others going full NPC. who'd have thunk it?
I'll say this. Jennika as a new female character HUMAN was rather interesting. Just like Having an Adult Angel as Nobody and Apolex was.
but making her a female turtle? Big mistake.
and not just because Venus came before her.
As Andrew said, part of the appeal of the turtles is their isolation. giving them more mutant turtles makes them a bit less unique. Unless the Turtle is SO Differently designed that it doesn't feel like a turtle. Like Tokka or 2012 Slash.
Making her a female turtle just kind of reeks of NPC ness. And the creator of the idea basically saying 'We just had to have a female turtle' kind of confirms that. IDW has been accused of riding identity politics before. but I never really saw it until now.

It's interesting, and inescapable, how much debate is arising over Jennika.
Like Andrew, I like the Turtles best as loners. Mirage "Sons of the Silent Age" is where it's at.
But. Because this is IDW, and loner mutants was never in the cards, I'm glad to have a female Turtle.
But Venus was better than Jennika, simply because a human turned turtle is... well, frankly, it reeks like a lot of bad fan fiction. Even though it's the most interesting thing that's happened to Jennika since she took off the red Assassin mask and introduced herself.
Caveats aside, I think Jennika will develop into a better character, and I honestly didn't think she'd just "fade away" after a few story arcs. But she has never been shown to actually be a sister to the four Turtles. Venus was in a terrible show, but she had tons of potential to be revived and improved. So...
We'll see.

I mean it's kinda hard to give Jennika any crap considering that IDW has been a mish/mash of previous incarnations and characters. They made the Neutrinos bad-ass and basically made Angel and Nobody into one person. Venus was a thing and Jennika is basically Venus done right. You'd have a stronger argument if there was never a female Turtle (including that one time April was mutated) and Jennika was the first female Turtle ever, but that wasn't the case.
I don't see Jennika as any sort of agenda or whatever modern day political ******** you guys want to cram in here that doesn't belong in a TMNT comic, I just see her as Venus done right.

I can't see her as Venus done right because she feels more like Jennika done wrong.
Jennika has been around for 50 issues, give or take, and she's been boring to me for pretty much that entire run, mainly because she felt very shoehorned. She's close to the Turtles, but we never saw it. She hooks up with Casey, because forced love triangle. The only interactions she has had that felt genuine and interesting were with Splinter and the Foot Clan.
Venus done right would be a mutated female turtle, with no human history prior to mutation. But that's my $0.02.
Cloudrunner
11-12-2019, 09:21 AM
My biggest problem with Jennika is that she's going to push other characters further into the background. Still waiting for that moment where Alopex actually interacts with someone from the Foot Clan. I mean FFS she's a straight up traitor to the Foot that almost killed (subjective) Shredder before Karai intervened, and yet she has had zero interaction with either of them after the fact. But Jennika meets Karai for the first time and Karai is just super ****ing interested in her.
It's just that... Jennika's "popularity" is obviously manufactured. It comes from the fact that she got a bunch of articles written about her. And while us as readers know she's her own character... people looking from the outside do not. The ones writing the articles are excited because she represents a similar concept to race/gender swapping a male character. "Destroying the straight white male status quo" or whatever ********. Literally the only reason they care is because they see it as introducing a female character in a male dominated space. But we already had characters like that in this run. And they were better written, at least before they were abandoned to be sideline characters. And I hate to see Jennika take center stage because those characters will get pushed even further back.
My biggest worry is that once Jennika's faux popularity wanes, she's going to be paired up with the other abandoned female characters. I believe one of the users here called them "Harold's Angels." Christ, what a horrible idea. Yeah lets just team up all these characters we've stripped of any relevance to the point where their only defining characteristic is the fact that they're girls. How ****ing exciting. :trolleye:

You know maybe we should be happy that tmnt is still being made. Sure it may not be what we're always wanting but it's still surviving, evolving, and branching off from what has been. People make comparisons to the marvel and dc universes but here's the thing what If those two guys had quit after the first issue. Hell if the internet would have been accessible and they saw the way people are fighting these days they might have. So be happy or leave the fandom if you hate what's been done. Or get a job at idw and do your own series. I mean all that has come after that first series is technically fanficton brought out into the limelight.

Wake me up when Ch'rell gets a mini series. Probably paired with Ma'riell.
I can agree that Jenny's stuff is "manufactured", but I also agree that her time for a mini series has come, considering most of the other characters have already. Just because it has a "manufactured" feel, it doesn't mean it's The Suits trying to "pander". It's also not a sign the company or the comic is struggling financially.
Especially when there's also female characters that do have a lot of interesting appeal that isn't being worked on. Ma'riell and Zom are both significantly more interesting to me. (Well, Zom as she is in the present at least; I still think For the Heart, For the Herd was a disaster).
What also felt like "manufacturing" was Bebop and Rocksteady getting TWO mini series and being even more invincible behemoths than they usually are.
Zog The Magnificent

On the one hand, this miniseries would be a good space to finally give Jennika some legitimate character development and flesh her out a bit. As it stands, being turned into a turtle is the most interesting thing that's happened to her, which is also part of the problem. I can tell you all about stuff that happens to Jennika, but not about Jennika herself, because really, Jennika herself doesn't have much of a character. However, neither did Hob when he started out, and now he's one of the most interesting characters in the book. This series has always had a slow burn approach to its storytelling, especially due to how much plot is crammed into it sometimes, so maybe it's just taken awhile to get to the actual substantial part of her story. On the other hand, I really hope she doesn't hijack the book. I wouldn't mind her being the focus for a bit, but only if they're able to develop her a little beforehand. If she becomes the focus before that, she'll end up being a mary sue.

I wouldn’t have balked at Venus. Next Mutation was cringe, Venus has some weird design choices, like shell tits, but I’d be fine with a long lost sister angle, or even the 5th turtle in the bowl/lab whatever, maybe even reference others who may have been in another tank, unhatched. You could fill out the whole rainbow of headgear if you want.
But sadly, as much as I don’t like to point it out, this reads only as identity politics, and exploiting an anti-male trend amongst the female incels in comics.

Nothing about the creation of the character reads as identity politics, only the way she was marketed. Her creation just needed more time in the oven and her mutation was poorly timed alongside a much bigger arc that had no time to deal with her.
As a side note, I can't help but notice the tags you added to the thread. So I'll tell you what I told them. Name calling is not how adults settle their differences. So please stop acting like a child before everyone here starts regretting standing up for you.

Jennika's mutation feels like Donatello's resurrection in "Vengeance"... really rushed amidst the big conflict that was supposed to be the focus.
Agreed 100%. Donatello's resurrection was so badly handled it was legit boring, void of emotion. There was hardly ANY personal beef between him and Shredder or B & R when he returned, like they weren't the ones who almost killed him. Really disappointing.

The writers seem to have a bad habit of dropping plot points like that, which could lead to interesting character interactions, in favor of moving along the plot. One of the few times they actually acknowledged it was Koya's beef with Leonardo. It didn't really last very long, but at least it happened.

My understanding of the Don situation is that all the trauma ended up getting "dumped" into Metalhead, but that still doesn't resolve the issue of Don needing issues with what happened to him.
Though there's a lot of trauma that just...doesn't get properly covered EXCEPT for Koya's. Maybe Hob. And even that was...weird.
But oh, boy Saki and Krang should have been a field day of trauma examination.
Saki enters a whole new world so radically different from his own that it should seem to him an alien world and he just...goes about business as usual. None of this "what do you mean Japan isn't isolated anymore" "what the hell is a lightbulb?" "why are there people trapped behind that screen?" "is there a tiny man speaking in that box?" We could have had at least one or two issues of Saki trying to adjust to the modern world.
I've gone on and on and on and on and ON about how Krang should be an absolute wreck. Trapped in a box so he can breathe, everyone he ever knew dead or in a tube, working with creatures that are ants to him intellectually, practically alone in so many different respects, and it's all his father's fault. His father who had been told again and again and again and again to stop what he's doing for the sake of his people, and with no real explanation (in spite of suggestion that he had been competent and compliant in the past), he just...didn't? And now Krang's off trying to do the exact same thing that got him into his situation in the first place? I'd think building an empire is the last thing he'd want to do with everything that's happened. I'd think he would have said "make the air suitable for us and recover from my father's sins". Still bad. But when you put it all together, Krang...doesn't make sense.
Leatherhead is the most traumatized character we have, but he's barely been in the story enough for him to "deserve" taking out Krang. When we'd NEVER seen them interact, or what Krang to did, or why Krang would think it was a good idea to mess with another mutant reptile after what happened with the Triceratons (adding to the idiocy of that with it now being a carnivore). If Leatherhead had been in the story earlier and we knew what was happening, sure. But with the way it was, it just didn't feel right.
And now we have Jennika. Who was D Y I N G and suddenly waking up in a body that is not hers. For all the discussion on "body dysphoria", that would be a perfect way to get that into someone's character. Her situation should suuuuuck, but nah, we gotta be all "oh cool she's a girl turtle"
NO IT'S DEVASTATING and we need to see it. With any luck, the mini series will be about her trying to cope with the situation she's in. And that would be interesting ifJennikahadbeenbetterdevelopedbeforeandwasn'tCase y'srebound.
(Although, with Saki and Krang's very different relationships with Earth technology in mind, I think it probably could have made at least one funny scene. Because while everything's new to Saki, Krang would have seen Earth technology grow and change - complete with a big slap in the face of rapidfire change from the 1950's onward. "Look at this idiot! Can't even figure out how televisions work!")

The writers seem to have a bad habit of dropping plot points like that, which could lead to interesting character interactions, in favor of moving along the plot. One of the few times they actually acknowledged it was Koya's beef with Leonardo. It didn't really last very long, but at least it happened.
To be perfectly frank, Koya's beef with Leonardo is dumb at this point, when Leo could take both her and Bludgeon simultaneously. He would have to pull his punches for Koya to have a real shot, and it's been that way since her introduction. Leo kicked her ass twice, took her wings, what even makes her think she has a chance? What makes her think this dumb vendetta against someone who is quite clearly her better will end any other way other than with her death? Makes no sense to me. But I guess that single-mindedness of hers is the point.

Nothing about the creation of the character reads as identity politics, only the way she was marketed. Her creation just needed more time in the oven and her mutation was poorly timed alongside a much bigger arc that had no time to deal with her.

The Mods indeed can see who it was who added any Tags; they generally don't "out" the person so as not to create any unneeded hostility between posters. They usually just Delete the offending Tags and reprimand the guilty party in private, if necessary.
I won't speculate, but historically, most of the Tags always came from one person, and that person hasn't posted much the last two years or so. When they do post, it's exclusively to start sh*t with someone, and they're well-known for lurking, so if I had to guess, that person would be my pick.

The first time I felt that way was when he told the Professor to "get in the car" during Secret History, like he had known what a car was his whole life. Though for all the mileage they usually get in such situations in fiction, I imagine cars would be the easiest of all modern technologies to explain to a time-displaced person. The second time was when he arrived at TCRI in Stockman's limo, wearing a suit, in Vengeance. We had never seen Saki like that before and it really drove home the possibilities of exploring his adjustment to living in the "future". And/or Splinter's, for that matter.

Oh yeah, SPLINTER adjusting to "the future" would have been great too (then capping with Krang's complaints about Earth being "backwards" clarified more with frustration about how slow the technology is. I can just picture Krang's reaction to a dial-up connection on Burnow Island, complete with that classic electronic chirping: he would remain silently frustrated for a couple of panels, and then order one of techies executed.

Anti-SJWs are basically about as bad as the people they apparently fight against. Why did the internet raise their pitchforks against SJWs? Because the SJWs (the ACTUALLY bad ones) were complaining about everything that could be taken as even mildly offensive and creating problems for them to be outraged about.
The anti-SJWs are just as bad, if not actually worse, as they do the exact same thing. The only difference is that they pretend they're this counter-culture fighting against the popular opinion (which is already sad on its own) when in reality, they get outraged over utterly inoffensive things and scream "SJW LIBERALS REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE". They talk about how SJWs always get triggered and yet burst into a fit of rage over the most meaningless ****, like not being able to beat their meat to Mortal Kombat anymore. And the worst part is, the only place where you'll find SJWs (at least, the ones that're like what the internet describes them as) is Tumblr and occasionally Twitter. They're few and powerless, meaning the only reason why these 'Anti-SJWs' are popping up is out of spite and out of being triggered.

I was going to reply to the larger post, but I sort of got lazy. For instance, I don't agree that we needed "fish out of water' Shredder since his stoic aura of mystery and seeming ability to adapt with the unusual (his whole trip through the spirit world for instance) is a big selling point for him in IDW I think.
Jennika though, yeah I confess I found this frustrating. I mean, people have been rolling with crazy mutations since the original cartoon but in Jenny's case I think it should have been a lot more traumatic. The problem is it happened in the middle of a 50 storyline pile up. My guess is that the miniseries will dig into this a bit, perhaps even justify the lack of response to the desperate situation at the moment. She doesn't really have time to reflect on what happened to her because everyone's life is at stake.

Oh I get it, limit the sexualization of women in video games while promoting the sexualization of men as women to society at large. Hetero sexuality is removed, to be replaced by LGBTQ sex. Are we seriously suggesting there isn't a double standard at play? It's gone far beyond acceptance now, and should not be tolerated by anyone anymore, ever. Peace and love folks, for all of us, and that includes sexy women, in media, for straight dudes to enjoy. If you're not a sexy woman, and feel underrepresented, I feel you, There have been far more films featuring Brad Pitt, than there have featuring dudes that look like me and get the girl. At this point SJW means "authoritarian fragile snowflakes who want total validation and support, no matter the issue at hand".
Social Justice doesn't mean placing men into women's sports to validate this men's delusions, for example and the like.
like not being able to beat their meat to Mortal Kombat anymore.
There is a difference between enjoying female form and immediately masturbating about it.
For some reason SJWs and their supporters think that if you like sexy women in games, than you immediately go into frenzy to masturbation frenzy. Maybe it is due to their own problems with sex, which are apparent if you see how much they are self-flagellating over having natural attraction for sexy women and interest in sex.
It doesn't help that a lot of the modern MK designs past MK9 has become boring and generic. Look at some of the characters in MK11 - they look like Mass Effect / Call of Duty / Anthem rejects. At least women has female faces and don't look like men in make up. Never thought I will consider this an achievement.

There's always been double standards; just flip the coin, when was the last time you heard of a high-profile case of female on male sexual assault or rape? It doesn't get reported because the common media ignores it unless it involves minors like with Kevin Spacey or Michael Jackson.
And when it come us common folk, again double standards: Woman gets assaulted her friends sympathise with her and get angry with the guy/ Man gets assaulted his friends laugh and joke about it and tell him to get over it and that he was lucky a girl wanted to bang him.

I guess I can stop pretending her Toad Baron mini with Jennika and Alopex wasn't miserably out of character and read like it was written by someone who has no idea how girls interact with eachother, and is the primary reason why I'm not very optimistic about her taking on a writing role in the main series.

I do hope they show Jennika adjusting to life as a mutant turtle. She got used to her new form too quickly in the main series, as this wasn't enough time to explore her character. If you go from human to a mutant turtle, you'd be a bit more hard to get to get used to.

So you're saying that there should never be any female super-heroes? That's pretty misogynistic, even for you.
Even for me? look at the twist in your argument.
I don't recall saying no female super heroes. Point to a quote where that's what I said, and you get a cookie.
What does that even mean?
There's always been double standards.
Sure, and there's always been sexism and racism. should we abide those as well?
Can't cherry pick arguments just to suit your own narrative.

Because they're in a quagmire. If they play her as having a hard time adjusting, the criticism will be that being different isn't okay. on the flip side, it's absoultely unbelieveable that anybody would go through a transformation like that, and not have some kind of ptsd. Just one more reason this character is horribly handled.

Ha ha, I'm getting attacked for simply asking the question, "Does April O'neil need to be sexy". I didn't really pick a side. I also wasn't referencing the Nick April's, even though I think the 2012 one did end up being sexualized despite being a kid.
I think we all think of the yellow jumpsuit first, or at least most do. I knew my thoughts but wanted to know what the board would say, and the consensus, surprisingly, was yes. What sexy is, we never dug into.
And this parallels to Jennika, in that, I don't think anyone here, is expecting her to be sexy, not even the ones who found Bugs attractive when he dressed in drag. Nobody is getting hot over the fifth turtle.
I just thought it was interesting that some roles are sexy by nature, while others are not. Just an observation.

Well, the answer to your question is a resounding "Yes", first of all. Because entertainment is Entertainment and I don't want to spend my free time looking at ugly people, be they fictional or otherwise. My wife very strongly agrees with this sentiment, as well.
Anyway. I mainly just chirped in because this place is such a tinder box with people getting ready to throw down over anything and everything, and that's just super. Everyone is so holier-than-though and yet it's terrific to see how bent they get over cartoons and toys, and especially differences of opinion. Doubly so when they label themselves as "progressive". Those people are especially amusing.
Also, with Campbell the streak of "TMNT Creators With Incredibly Thin Skins" continues. I've lost track of how many of them leave this place despite nobody even being argumentative or mean to them. I don't think I ever spoke to them, but in my observation the only people who did were borderline ass-kissy (which is fine, so long as the person is being sincere). "Some people lean Right, and I can't handle it", though? And people who lean Left insist that they can exist outside of an echo chamber, while everything they do and say proclaims otherwise. Ah well.
Anyways, I've been rooting for this place to self-destruct for longer than most people have been actively posting here, so I greatly enjoy it whenever there's blood in the water. :tgrin:

Oh, I'unno. That's an interesting question. I think it's because of how many people are hypocrites, can't separate Fact from Opinion, and/or have no sense of humor (although I grant that my own brand is very dark and may not be for everyone.) Xav: I'm pretty sure the terms of my "conditional release" preclude me from getting into the specifics of all that. Something about a bus and a cliff, but also time-travel and hard narcotics. It was dark. Probably in poor taste, although I maintain that I've probably done worse. Like, I looked into it, and it definitely didn't break any rules technically, but it was pretty nasty so it required some form of action. It is what it is.
I know exactly who took offense to it and reported it, and while I admit that I wasn't very nice, I'm surprised that they didn't have better things to do. It wasn't written for them, and I'm still surprised they even saw it. It was for me and the six people here who think I'm hilarious, and I always kinda figure that certain things should be obvious by now.
It was not a funny situation at the time but it resolved itself. The moral of the story is, Nickelodeon people are watching us, and they can be pretty thin-skinned.

Just because they watch and observe doesn't mean they care all that much about what we think. They're just checking the temperature.
Paramount had people here during the movie disasters, too, and they still made two of those, and they were what they were. They don't necessarily respect our opinions, they just want to know which way the wind is blowing. Ultimately, they know that this particular fanbase will swallow anything, so ultimately they're going to do whatever they want, anyway.

I still think the IDW run is the best TMNT has ever been. Just because I have issues with some of the recent direction doesn't mean I want to cut off from it entirely. I'd rather voice my concerns and try to enact change. If I were to boycott, what then? Who else is doing TMNT stuff? Nick? I hate Rise, and anything else they make would be equally childish. There's nothing else happening with this franchise. So I don't think you're going to have much luck boycotting IDW when this run is what brought most people here to begin with. The best thing to do is just voice our concerns.

Uh... not sure why everyone's arguing with TommyT. It's honestly laughable how far away he is from the truth of the matter -- e.g., why we decided to make a female turtle, who was primarily responsible for pushing it forward and through to reality (hint: me), why we waited as long as we did, what my political motivations were (hint: none), and where IDW/Nickelodeon is going with the character in the future.
Hate to break it to you, but the truth is a far simpler picture than what you paint in your rants, TommyT. From issue #1, Kevin and talked about making a female turtle. Every convention/signing we've ever been to, little girls asked us why there was no girl turtle. It was important to the children and it was important to us (Kevin always felt that Venus was a missed opportunity). But we were patient, because we didn't want to feel like we were pandering or forcing the issue. We wanted it to happen when/if it felt right... so that it worked for the story being told instead of distracting from it. So we waited. And then Jennika came along in issue #51. She was supposed to be a throwaway character... a plot point to move Splinter's character forward in his new role as master of the Foot Clan. But something about her wouldn't let me throw her away. I liked her... the mystery of her... and her hidden potential. But I didn't know I wanted her to be our female turtle until I read Brahm Revel's amazing Jennika origin story in TMNT Universe much later. That's when it hit me like a thunderbolt -- Jenny's the one! And so we spent more years carefully developing her (including me secretly reaching out to artist Sophie Campbell to collaborate on her turtle design), making sure when the time came for her transformation, she was already very much a part of the Hamato Clan (surrogate sister and daughter, etc.) and that she fit neatly in to the family dynamic, whether human or mutant turtle. And then I had to convince Nickelodeon and my fellow creators that the time was right and that it could work (no corporate SJW agenda driving her mutation, TommyT... sorry to disappoint you). Luckily for me, I was able to bring everyone on board, we all came came together to develop the story, and the rest is history.
Now, mileage may vary as to how successful we were, but that right there is the real story behind why Jennika the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle exists.
I doubt you'll believe me, TommyT (and frankly, I don't care one iota), but you might want to know the REAL reality of things before you make up your own -- which is exactly what you're doing. Not sure what possessed you to publicly spout falsehoods and misguided assumptions like you're doing here (pretending like you have some kind of magical behind-the-scenes access... or that you personally know me or my intentions at all), but take it from the actual source -- you're way off base with everything you've said here. Again, I'm sure you'll deny it, and that's fine. You'll probably get defensive and attack me, and that's okay, too -- it's easy to do from behind the safety of an anonymous keyboard (sadly, the world's filled with internet "tough guys" these days). Thing is, I know the truth because, in this case, I AM the truth. That's good enough for me -- and I hope it'll be good enough for the good folks futilely debating you on this forum (we both know full well you'll never change your mind no matter how hard they try, don't we?), so they can turn their energy on to a more positive TMNT fandom track. After all, this forum can be a fantastic place to talk about the property we all claim to love... or it can become another online slum full of unnecessary negativity and self-inflicted gloom, doom, and hatred.
And that's all I'm going to say about this matter -- take it or leave it.
As for Jenny's PTSD, that's a very fair point -- and something Sophie will be exploring in her run starting with issue #101. The way I see it, Jenny was transformed in the middle of an ongoing and intense conflict (a City At War, to be exact) and she had little time to deal with her mutation as there was fighting to be done. I took inspiration from my time in the USMC -- more than once I've seen Marines (including myself) have to put important personal issues aside in order to focus on the immediate battle at hand. But there will be time for Jenny to deal with the undeniable trauma/confusion caused by her mutation... and I know Sophie's gonna handle it professionally and respectfully (I've already seen the proof).
And Jenny won't be the only one dealing with PTSD after the events of #100, trust me. After all, contrary to what TommyT is harping about above, she is NOT the only important character in this series -- Sophie (and Bobby) have amazing plans for the entire beloved ensemble cast starting with issue #101... and beyond.

Good question. My plan was that she remain Splinter's Chunin, and become even more like a daughter to him over time, regardless if she mutated or not. In the beginning, she was dogmatic in her loyalty to the Foot Clan. Over time (as she explained to Karai just before Karai stabbed her in City At War), she began to realize what she needed was a family, not a criminal ninja clan. And as she changed, Splinter began to realize, too, that he was trading family for crime, no matter how much he tried to deny it... and fix it. As Jenny grew as a person near him, Splinter gained a kind of grim self-realization through her... as old and experienced as he was, he still had growing to do (don't we all?). I liked that role for Jenny a lot -- whether human or not.

I personaly found Jen more interesting as a human protege to splinter. the daughter he never had. as a female turtle... it just seems, un needed. even if the way she was mutated works rather well.
Venus was her own mis under used potential. a magical turtle, rather than a ninja turtle could have been interesting. just like dragon lord was an interesting villain.
I just don't think Jen needed to be mutated. it would be as goofy as turning April into a turtle, even short time.
although, I will say a possible romance between baxter and april sounds far more interesting heh.

I remember thinking Jennika as a human was going to be IDW's Gabrielle from the Mirage comics, and that's why she was flirting with Casey. Much like how in Mirage they got together in City at War and Gabrielle died at childbirth leaving Casey and April to raise the daughter (Shadow), I thought that's where the Casey/Jennika thing was going to go in IDW.
It would have been an interesting way to bring Shadow, Casey and April's adoptive daughter, into the IDW universe. Of course in this series Shadow would be Casey's biological daughter since Casey/Jennika would have gotten together for awhile, and then she would either die at childbirth or in City at War, but the baby would be saved...and Shadow would be in the IDW universe.

Glad to get an official response. I won't be attacking you, as I don't know you. I appreciate you taking the time to step in and clear the air. I would say that so far, the tone from you was pretty hostile, but that's your right. I'm just a fan, who used to buy your products.
And I'd also like to say, at least for myself, this is a forum celebrating the characters, and stories of the turtles, a franchise that has had many homes. This is not a forum dedicated to IDW, itself, and there needs to be a clear understanding that praise of one is not necessarily of the other, no more than we must celebrate Platinum Dunes or Playmates.
...Why we decided to make a female turtle, who was primarily responsible for pushing it forward and through to reality (hint: me), why we waited as long as we did, what my political motivations were (hint: none), and where IDW/Nickelodeon is going with the character in the future ... From issue #1, Kevin and talked about making a female turtle. Every convention/signing we've ever been to, little girls asked us why there was no girl turtle. It was important to the children and it was important to us (Kevin always felt that Venus was a missed opportunity). We wanted it to happen when/if it felt right... so that it worked for the story being told instead of distracting from it. So we waited. And then Jennika came along in issue #51. She was supposed to be a throwaway character...
You had me, up until there. That's where I stop buying what you're selling.
So this was your decision, (yours and Kevin's), to add a fifth turtle, again, to the team, (Fifth after April, Kirby, Zac, Venus, and also apparently Mark Freedman) but, fifth in this incarnation. Got it.
Did you get Peter's blessing? Just curious.
...Something about her wouldn't let me throw her away. I liked her... the mystery of her... and her hidden potential. But I didn't know I wanted her to be our female turtle until I read Brahm Revel's amazing Jennika origin story in TMNT Universe much later. So I'm confused why you asked Sophie, to design her? Yeah, I like Sophie, She has a distinct style, and perspective on the turtles, BUT, and I hate to say it, but...was Kevin busy? You said, this was his idea! Why not tap the first person to ever draw a ninja turtle, to add the all important, ground breaking fifth turtle? Wouldn't that be the sort of an honor you'd bestow on the original creator, especially if they're still involved and still around? Weird you picked Sophie, given the huge list of creators at your disposal. Again, She's perfectly qualified, but maybe not more so than the Originator.
Sure, I bet Nick was really unhappy you were adding a fifth charcter to the core that could be merchandised alongside the essential 4. Yep, sounds like that was some real arm twisting.
I doubt you'll believe me, TommyT
You're right, I don't.

Ok Tom? I don't know you at all. I also never said I did. But I can see the strategy. I'm not claiming that you told me this, or that I have first hand knowledge, at all. I never once even alluded to it.
What i did say, was that IDW was in trouble, according to online articles written by reputable websites!!! You can accuse me of reading the news, that's all.
Okay, I get it, I'm suggesting this was set this up as a stunt, to boost sales, because IDW is in trouble, but man, THAT'S WHAT FANS DO!!! We all do it! We speculate and gossip about why things happen the way they do!!! Ask Andrew about weed whacking and his hatred of plants! half the threads here are conversations around what the pros are doing, and why.
IDW is in trouble, is it not? It's public knowledge at this point, and as I've said before, Turtles isn't to blame, but the company as a whole is having some serious financial difficulty. Turtles may be the one thing that is, from the outside, still an evergreen property, excuse the pun. My entire point, since i began arguing with the ChosenOne in another thread, is that we've seen all of this before! TURTLEMANIA sold the turtles out and sent the brand into remission, for years, almost a decade.
Again, I'm sure you'll deny it, and that's fine. You'll probably get defensive and attack me, and that's okay, too -- it's easy to do from behind the safety of an anonymous keyboard (sadly, the world's filled with internet "tough guys" these days).
Take a breath. That sounds like a threat, and I'm sure you didn't mean it that way. Threats aren't okay, no matter who you are.
read between the lines. I am a fan, and you have me VERY worried. I am also not alone, in my fear that this is all taking the turtles in a very dangerous direction.
And that's all I'm going to say about this matter -- take it or leave it.
Sure. after the sales spike, we'll see what's what. Check those numbers for Charlies Angels, let me know what a good idea it is to lean hard into the SJW world, from a financial perspective. It's a long road out after 100. Maybe you'll pretend to kill Raphael, or Leo next?
As for Jenny's PTSD, that's a very fair point --
And that's all i've been saying. Try to hear it for what it is, and that it's because we LOVE this brand, and we want the best for it. That's it, and that's all.

You need to look up the definition of rude. I took the time to respond. He's calling me out, and I don't care who he is. I've been civil, but a few points in his response were also OVER the line.
What exactly does tough guys behind keyboards imply? Kiss ass all you want, I refuse to watch them shred the last bit of TMNT for a dollar. Kevin's been doing it since the sale, did it before with Venus, and it's happening again.

Controversy aside, I personally found it to be a boring movie by Phase 3 standards. Would've been fine in Phase 1. Here's hoping Black Widow doesn't turn out the same way, ScarJo deserves to leave the MCU with a bang.

I think it can be, and is, indicative of several things, including but not limited to:
1. Everything has an expiration date.
2. Things that were created to be tongue-in-cheek jiggle-fests centered entirely on giving men the opportunity to ogle busty lasses in tight clothing cannot be retrofitted into something serious and "feminist". It just doesn't work. The feminist audience has no affection for the brand, while the men who might care won't pay to see flat-chested waifs finger-wag them about being progressive.
They made a movie for absolutely nobody, and thus, absolutely nobody went to see it. I think a person can tell quite a lot from that, frankly.
As to whether or not those things can apply to conversations about Other Things... eh, depends.

I think you could derive that it wasn't something people were excited to see. I think you could say that people just don't like watching unlikable actors.
i also think that suggesting that men weren't willing to be supportive, is the kind of spin reserved for war time propaganda, and shouldn't be used to float a movie that nobody wanted.

I suppose the point I'm trying to make is that I see Charlie's Angels bombing about as significant in any larger cultural context as Man From UNCLE bombing. Both were movies coasting on vague name recognition and no real unique selling point.
Female fronted action movies succeed and do so fairly regularly. Charlie's Angels didn't. That's about it.
By the way, I HAVE seen the movie and it sucked, so believe that I have no personal stake in this.

Which is weird to me, as stated in the CA thread. Even if the director is somehow right and no men showed up, that means that the 8 million total it earned in its first weekend was just women. So if men matched the women and gave another 8 million... we're still only up to 16 million, against a 50 million dollar budget.
I mean, blame whatever you want. Blame the marketing, blame the release date... but men not showing up to a female actioner? C'mon. I love female actioners. "Anna" was awesome this year. Also, didn't Resident Evil have like 5 sequels? Underworld?

Can't we just blame Kristen Stewart? She's terrible. The mob demands a convenient scapegoat!
Also, Jesus, they DID do a "Man From U.N.C.L.E." reboot, didn't they? Holy sh*t, I can't understand how such ignorant people get handed so much money to waste on these provably-stupid and doomed-to-failure ideas.
Pretty sure if nobody under age 35 remembers something, it's not a good idea to make a movie about it. Just seems to be the rule of thumb.

FYI: Never cite "Lone Ranger" to a Depp fanatic. They will insist beyond all reason that it's a brilliant piece of work and that Depp is this generation's Marlon Brando. Ella Balinska is dead sexy, and i think could be a breakout star.
If pressed, I would have to say, It was EXACTLY Stewart that killed the film. Like, i get te angst and rebellion etc, but she has a quasi Miley Cyrus, go F yourself vibe in the whole movie, not that different than Brie Larson.

Jennika miniseries, hmm? That seems interesting. I might pick up an issue or two, and see if I like it.
Personally, I have no problem with Jennika becoming a mutant ninja turtle. We've had a fifth girl turtle before, and Jennika's mutation was handled far better than Venus Di Milo's introduction was in next Mutation; and I still believe Venus's intro is what led to the backlash against her, and she wasn't that bad of a character. And Sophie's design for Jennika is amazing! :D
That being said, there are things I do not like about how the character has been handled in IDW so far; I feel she hasn't gotten enough development before mutation, Her big change happening in the middle of the biggest storyarc of the series felt out of place, and it should have been in a story focused on the change. And I think the the mutagen/Leo blood transfusion origin was a poorly executed origin story for her- it reminds me of another blood transfusion origin story for a super heroine. I think she should have been mutated by old Hob's mutagen bomb along with Mona Lisa and the others. And her name -Jennika- does kind of stick out compared to the other four. I wonder if she should eventually get a mutant nickname? .
All that said, I think the character has a lot of potential, and her story could go wither way. It just depends on how they handle her from here on out. I think should could be a good addition to the team, we'll just have to wait and see how they handle it.
Utrommaniac
11-19-2019, 08:20 AM
I mean, the mutation could easily have also happened when Hob dropped the mutagen bomb; would have saved a lot of time. Just drop the confrontation with Karai entirely (or in its place, a whole fight scene between Jennika and Karai that eventually dissolves into a big ol' chase. Battle of the Foot Chunins!)
Then, with some excuse for it happening, Jennika would get in the crowd with the Stockman supporters and get caught in the mutation. Her transformation into a turtle would just be serendipitous ("OR IS IT???" says Splinter)

I think they went with the blood transfusion as a way to cement the family aspect. Now they’re “related” literally by blood. Makes it slightly more meaningful than another random mutation from the bomb. Not saying it was the best choice but I feel like that’s the angle they were going for.

Now, as I've repeatedly stated in this forum, I'm not very well versed in other iterations of the comic other than IDW and Archie but I had a vague notion that the greater part of the franchise is now out of Laird's control, so I looked it up just to make sure before I posted and got this:
On October 19, 2009, Laird sold the franchise to Viacom parent company of Nickelodeon, but still retains the rights to create and publish up to eighteen black-and-white comics based on the franchise per year. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Laird#Unexpected_success)

I remember the sale, and the announcement well. No need for crowd sourced info. I lived it.
Let’s just maybe not go around pretending the creator shouldn’t be considered, when doing something that broke apart their friendship and devastated the brand. I don’t need the fathers permission to marry his daughter, if she’s over 18, but it’s never a bad idea, to tip the hat.

If you, by your own admission, are aware that Peter Laird sold away his right to have a say in all of this, you really don't have a reason to keep going on about Jennika. Let's just maybe not go around pretending he cared that much whether a female Turtle was introduced, since apparently the whole notion came with a price tag on it. He can like it or dislike it but the franchise is in someone else's hands now. The creator shouldn't be considered in this specific matter after he said "I really don't care what you do so long as I get a fair shake in this deal", no.
And good thing you mention getting the father's permission to marry his daughter, since this particular daughter has two fathers, one of them is still involved, and he seems thrilled with the idea. Part of me would love nothing better than for Eastman himself to come over here and put you in your place, but on the other hand I'm dreading to see what sort of insults you could cook up for him.
You seem to want to substitute the creative minds behind the comic and/or have a final say in things like you're one of the creators. It doesn't work that way.

You also didn’t seem to read the part where I pointed out that, despite his apparent love for a female turtle, Eastman was not involved, aside feom championing the idea, according to Waltz.
I’d also point out, Eastman championed the 2014 abominations. He has stood beside all TMNT, no matter the quality, and endorsed it. Laird has not, and maybe, one could speculate, that was precisely what caused the rift so many years ago. Selling out vs integrity.
On the flip side, merchandising is very important, and new blood and ideas are integral to growing any IP. Maybe Jennika becomes a huge hit, and the franchise rockets back to blinding success! Sure this could happen, and yes, Maybe being protective isn’t the right move.
Bay’s turtles hurt the IP, and Rise only further kneecapped it. Brands can die and bad ideas can kill them.

It is a relatively recent meme. However, the thing about memes is, it can last a year or it can last a week, there isn't a specific expiration date. It boils down to how popular it is and how quickly all of its potential will be used up, how long it'll take for it to reach sites like 9gag or Facebook meme pages or, God forbid, how long it'll take for mainstream media to start using it. 'Ok boomer' reached such popularity and mainstream coverage that its lifespan was doomed to be short. However, considering that this site is stuck in the early 00s, it's still alive enough to be used here without it being too sad.

He can't seem to grasp the simple fact that grown-ups (like Peter Laird, for one) often have more pressing concerns - financial or otherwse - than fretting about a fictional character that happens to be female. Could be interesting, but then again it runs dangerously close to a "Poochy" type scenario from The Simpsons, or the Scrappy Doo, of the franchise. Hopefully they can avoid those pitfalls and justify a 5th mutant turtle. As I kid I never had too much of a problem with Scrappy Doo. I never understood the hate towards him.
I mean yellow was the best choice as it matches the primary/secondary colors of the others. The only other color that could have worked was green and the turtles are already green.Purple could have been cool. :D

I mean The Force Awakens made a ton of money and that film was a travesty that ruined Star Wars creatively although not financially. :ohwell:
I think you could derive that it wasn't something people were excited to see. I think you could say that people just don't like watching unlikable actors. The most fair reviews I've read on the movie is that it's dull.

Long ago original Lara Croft was an empowered female that males tended to beat to, thankfully Square Enix fixed all that by making rebooted Lara Croft a teenager who is a psychotic version of John Rambo.
When you look at the sort of character John Rambo originally was, this either becomes incredibly ironic or incredibly sad.

Hm. I'm a female fan of TMNT myself, and it's interesting to read this. I never really thought about there being a female turtle or not growing up. I guess, for me (back in the 90s when I first watched the cartoon), April felt like she was just as much a part of the team even though she was a human.
I actually think TMNT as a franchise has had really great female characters, like Ninjara, Alopex, April (in the majority of her incarnations), Shadow, and so on. I feel that with Venus, she wasn't awful, and not the worst part of The Next Mutation to me. Venus felt awkwardly shoehorned in, despite being established since the pilot for that show. I also felt like she didn't have very good chemistry with the other turtles. In a lot of ways, those are the problems I've had with Jennika as well.
Like many others have pointed out here, it felt like the shock of her entire life changing so drastically got glossed over. I also feel like she isn't as well defined as some of the other supporting cast of the comic. I feel like Alopex was the gold star standard of how to write a new mutant character into TMNT. I'm hoping the new mini series remedies some of the complaints I and other readers have had with regards to Jennika.

I agree.
It just feels like having a female turtle for the sake of having a female turtle.
Even if that was not your intention, that's the way it feels to a bit of the audience.
And you can't even really tell it's a female anyway..as turtles don't really have curves to begin with. so what was the point of making her one?
She was much more interesting as a human. a Foot Soldier assassin learning to see the ways of the light.

The problem with the light blue bandana is that it's redundant because Leonardo's is already blue, albeit a slightly darker shade.
I guess yellow is better, though not sure what other alternatives are left. Most of the major colors are already taken, green wouldn't do since the turtles are green themselves, white/black/gray feel awkward, pink is too cliche for a female character... Yeah, yellow's kind of the only one that can be feasibly used.

Match color schemes are kind of limited, especially if you aren't trying to go "Look at me." The yellow band works simply because of the color wheel. and as someone already mentioned it would be hard to make Green work. Though campbell did do a Venus in the style of the Platinum Turtles with a light green bandana, which I feel works as Venus was already a "Light color" turtle.
Though there is white, an opposite of Slash that would work like their counterpart being a third party turtle.
And then there is the "No bandana" as Andrew mentions.
Though there is the albino turtle, very neutral.

Well in an effort to drown out that call-out and not derail the thread, and since no one seemed to be talking about it, I guess I might as well give my thoughts on the first issue. It was about what I was expecting, and that's not really a compliment. Most of what happens is fairly predictable and cliche, and the few scenes that really helped show her character were marred with some oddly whimsical dialogue. And unfortunately the big reveal, and what seems to be the crux of this mini, was already revealed by the synopsis of the other books. Some of the best parts of the book, and IMO the recent mainline books, is the continued worldbuilding of Mutant Town. I really wouldn't mind a miniseries just detailing the adventures of random characters in the town.
The meeting with Casey unfortunately seems to occur after their breakup, so it was pretty short and awkward. I really would have liked to see that actual moment, cause I feel like it would have helped her character growth and kind of explain why she decided to become some protector of mutant town. But maybe that kind of relationship drama would have taken up too much page space for a TMNT book.
Speaking of taking up page space, we got the obligatory scene that happens in every single new female superhero comic in which she beats up a bunch of buffoonish misogynists that tell her she doesn't belong. Thus proving all the haters wrong, once and for all! (Did you clap? I clapped.)
I think the most interesting part of the book was introducing Silas. That's probably the most important character development she's had thus far and I would like to see a begrudging teamup between Jennika and him going forward with this mini. I'm NOT looking for any relationship development there, I just think that it would help build her character to have someone to play off of, and the ex that both drove her to a life of crime and abandoned her seems like a good choice.

The solicitation mentions a brand new villain. No OBVIOUS antagonist showed up here. Maybe Silas or even Vincent are gonna turn out to be villainous later on? Or maybe those two troublemakers that Jennika beat the crap out of? I would venture to guess that Silas will be the villain cuz of the past, but he did nothing outwardly antagonistic here, but still two issues to go.:D
I don't know if there's gonna be a continuation of the short, but if there is, I really hope that they don't start implying that Jennika's rat was actually Splinter. That was my first thought, and it wasn't a positive thought either.

I hate to say it, I try to be positive, but I just don't care for the art or the color pallet here. Jennika is a great character and I am glad we are looking into her history and still exploring Mutant Town, but the art is distracting for me. I liked the art in Ronda's story a lot more.

personally i've been supportive of Jennika as a character since the 'What is Ninja' back-up story, in TMNT: Universe. you can even look up the threads from back when it was published.
i also really liked the moments between Leonardo training Jennika back in issue #61.
but i'm really not sure if i like the idea of mutation Jennika into a Turtle. it just seems like a gimmick. as if to say "now you have to like her as a character, because she's a Ninja Turtle".
i liked her as a character before, but now this just really feels forced.

i think one of the biggest problems IDW TMNT has faced as it has further progressed, is introducing and juggling WAY too many characters.
characters stories need to be wrapped up sooner, and not dangled along for years and years.
i have to say that for all that i enjoyed about IDW's City at War, a lot of it felt really rushed. the pacing going from very 'slow burn' to extremely rushed really made it difficult to get emotionally invested in.
i liked how this Jennika issue one called back to Jenny's life before the Foot Clan, but now we are introducing even more new characters to have to juggle in the already over-crowded main series.

The first issue felt somewhat bland, certainly underwhelming compared to what I was expecting. And it's not that I don't like Jennika - like so many others apparently don't - but my favorite bits had already been shown in the preview. I'll wait until the whole mini is out to consolidate my opinion, but for now, it seems destined to (ironically!) keep Casey & April company in the bottom tier of IDW TMNT fare. Not bad, just not as good as everything else.

Agreed! I actually think there's a very good chance we'll get something like that when the focus of the ongoing eventually turns away from Mutant Town or widens to other goings-on elsewhere. The potential right now for stories featuring both old but underused and brand new characters is truly limitless.

Whew! Just got caught up on the first two issues today and now, not sure where to start
The main title has been taking a more emotional Northampton-styled break from the main action, so this title right now has felt like a fresh air of more light-hearted stuff
PARTICULARLY with Billy and Barry, it seems like mutants come best packed in twos if this is anything to go by, just the right mix of ridiculous and fun to a brief action scene
I agree plenty that it's being red herringed like anything the cure is not what anyone's gonna want, or at least that there are gonna be some very, very nasty consequences for that poor lady in the video they showed
(I dig Ivan's slightly less animalistic mutation, sets him apart somewhat, weirdly makes me trust him far less as the most human looking of the lot there)
And on final notes, I LOVE the extra stories at the back pages, they may only be a few pages, but they add tons in here, Wreckreation being a new fave just to show some of the different female characters off and how things go for Mona Lisa's attempts to band them together for 'girls night', lol, more of that kind of story or others to show us lil windows into other background mutants as others have mentioned please
(Also, Goddamnit that panel of Sally and the knitting, need to find some meme-y youtube vids now!)
Does anyone else feel like they live in Mutant town with this Coronavirus???
Actually thought about making a topic on this subject myself how accidentally relevant all of this is with things going on right about now, felt it was a little too on the nose for a full topic, but, won't lie if it's certainly helping me empathise right about now >_>
I don't know how old bea is, but with ms. Gonzalez if a third old female rodent mutant shows up, I might have to do a parody picture of the golden girls called the rodent girls.

Read the next issue. Gotta admit, I don’t trust Silas. First off, I’m inclined to view anyone who wears a hammer and sickle badge along with the edgy upside down cross, and hasn’t changed that look in, what, years? with skepticism. He shows a lot of signs of gaslighting Jennika. “Oh your memories are wrong, I thought you were behind me. I totally searched for you!” Guy’s kindof a loser. In fact I could sort of see the joke getting a call back.
“Sy, I think I figured out your animal.”
“Oh?”
“You’re a weasel.”
I watched the IV bag the woman on the video was hooked up to. It didn’t seem to go up or down. The really obvious (especially with the lack of audio) play here is that they filmed some woman as she was was turned into a dog lady and they ran video backwards.
The only way I see the cure actually being legit is if they stole this from Null, not Hob, in which case the last issue may end with the group being pasted by a squad of mercenaries in black helicopters.

Yeahhhhh, I dunno how much life we'll see of Silas as a background character, at best he's a screwup, at worst, he's possibly in on all of this, so much so I'd kill to have had your line included about him being a weasel
I lean towards him being more likely oblivious to the bigger problems he's got himself involved with now, but the jury is definitely out on him until we see what happens come final issue here
Also just a tiny thought, I understand art differences and all being a thing in portrayals of how Mutant Town generally looks (as well as when this story could have taken place in any of the six months between issue 100 and issue 101 of the main comic?) but I wonder on the Kennel Klub, since we just got to see it in the main comic, could Jennika's mini have shown the front entrance and the main comic showing off a rear entrance?

Mutant Town does seem a bit more dilapidated in the main series doesn’t it? It’s boring, but I am curious how many basic amenities the town has. Electricity? Water? Gas? Wi-Fi? Cell service?
If the cure is a fake (and I’m at 90% sure it is) I actually do think Sy might be a believer and not in on the scam. He strikes me as manipulative, but that doesn’t mean he’s above being manipulated by others.

So after all that, the cure was a phony plot concocted by Bebop and Rocksteady? That's kindof hilarious. However, I'm a little curious how the apparent inclusion of Gothano plays into this. That was Gothano in the boat correct? And apparently the one who portrayed the woman who was cured?
Also, poor guy was a muskrat, the gag was actually him hiding what he was. And now I'm reading wikipedia. I don't know man, maybe your smell would actually be appealing to another mutant in the vole and lemming family.

It seems that they're loyal(-ish) to Karai specifically, not so much the Foot, and she does have a history of keeping them around as blunt instruments, so it only makes sense that they left (or were kicked out, considering what they had done to Donatello just recently) at the start of Splinter's tenure and then elected to stay under Karai. I do wonder if wily ol' Splinter wouldn't have tried to keep them around if he had already parted ways with his sons by #51...
Regardless, the back-up was indeed pretty good but the main mini ended up having an unexpectedly poignant closure in the form of Jennika's debt of gratitude to, and fondness for, Splinter. She might not feel like a sister to the other Turtles just yet, but she sure always felt like a daughter to their father from the very first arc she appeared in.
Also, someone should really inform Bebop that a chainsaw isn't the best choice of weapon for enclosed spaces with a crowd of your allies standing about...
