Video Clips

I've been looking into possibly changing the format that the video clips on The Technodrome (http://www.thetechnodrome.com) are in, so I thought I would ask everyone's opinion before changing them. The only requirements I have are that the format has to be something that most people have on their computers or can install easily, and that the clips are good quality with a small file size (under 2MB, so MPEG and QuickTime are out). If you have any suggestions that aren't listed in the poll, let me know.

ok i'll run the risk(i dunno if i can post here :roll: ) ok inever liked the videos in real format they r not very good, in fact real media is not very good itself, i would preffer if they were avi's, not necesarily divx, divx sometimes slows down the sound and it doesn't match with the video, besides u don't need special software for playing avi videos, u need to download a real playerfor playing real media videos

Yeah.. I agree. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with video media yet. but I found that .avi files can be played anywhere. While the other formats (like .rm and .mov) are specific to certain players. That's a pain if you don't wish to download those players too...

like a month ago i had to reformat my comp, 2 times almost in a row, i had to download quicktime installer from the internet, cuz the installation is made online :tgrumble: , the first time i didn't even bother getting real, i don't like it much, maybe cuz most of the real videos i have r bad in a quality

Yeah divx would be the best choice! I have no need of clips for myself beacuse i have soon downloaded the whole 193 episode series!

Only problem with divx i that we mac users won't be able to hear it even with the codec stuff it doesn't seem to work, :( so I say realmedia which also has ok quality

i like windows media player (.wmv) because even when the file is small, it still packs good quality but if u have enough room to host, i'd go with divx

Well, I'm not really a fan of RealMedia myself, since it took a while removing all the spyware after installing the RealOne player, so I'd like to use another format if possible. The problem is, if I do put them in AVI format, I pretty much have to use the DivX codec, since uncompressed AVI files are usually very big. I still have the AVI files on my hard drive for my clips, and even though they're slightly compressed with ATI's VCR2 codec, a one-minute clip is 40MB! So the choice is between DivX, WMV, and RealMedia, unless someone can think of a good codec besides DivX that will keep the clips under 2MB.

I hate real!not only do they installed spyware with realone player and i had to go back to realplayer 8, but that player crashes most of the time...and the quality of the video/sound isn't very good...so i voted for divx, even tho i don't really download clips, so it's the same for me if they're on asf, wmv, rm, viv, mpg, mov or whatever :P

personally, I don't care what kind of files they are as long as the quality is good. The stupidest thing I've seen is people converting rms or asfs to divx because they feel divx is the ultimate format even though the converting dramatically increases the file size. fe: This is kind of off topic but one of the gi joe eps was a 96 meg asf and some moron converted it to divx. Not only did this increase the file size to 130 meg it gave the file syncronizing problems. So I'm with any type of file as long as the quality is good and please don't convert the rms if you do change the types.

I hate realmedia too :x most of the rm files freezes when there is too much movement going on :sweatdro: and besides i can't edit rms so i have to convert it to other format if i want to do so...to top it off the player crashes most of the time, but it's the only player that will play that kind of files so i have no choice -.-

Yeah i've heard you said something like that some days ago in irc...that's pretty stupid :S if it's asf, it's asf, the only way you'll get better quality will be by re-encoding it...

So I'm with any type of file as long as the quality is good and please don't convert the rms if you do change the types.Don't worry, I wouldn't do something like that. I still have the original AVIs from when I first encoded the clips, so I will convert those to the new format. I did test out each of the 3 formats for one of my clips, and they all ended up in pretty good quality with no desyncing. Here are the file sizes:

Original AVI: 27.3MB
DivX: 1.74MB
WMV: 1.61MB
RM: 1.10MB

Yeah, and you don't need to download a codec to watch them unlike divx, i think the wmv codec comes with windows or something :D

Yeah that happend to me too, it's either because the person that encoded the video did it wrong and got the audio out of sync, or the quality of the video is too high

*all* the files?Then its the pc, no doubt about it...in that part i guess windows media is "better", for clips at least, since you dont need to download codecs and it will run on most pcs at normal speed...and i'll leave rm out because it sucks =P

yeah divx is the way to go. If that problem happens trying pausing the video a few times, sometimes it matches back up.

yes that's a good solution...you can also use the DivX Player and low down the quality so that it matchs the audio/video, in case the desynch problem is caused by the quality of the file...but it either has to be a bad encoded file or a slow pc, its not a codec problem...heck, if everything encoded with the divx codec would be out of synch, noone would be trading files using the divx codec :wink:

Sometimes after bad frames sound and video get out of sync... I use virtualdub to repair them...

That's my point, i also got them from mirc, but my files are NOT corrupted, for i have watched most of them, and they played fine...i don't know what to tell you, if it's a windows media player problem then try using another player.

I use MicroDVD Player.

MicroDVD Player is a media player, it can play mpeg, avi, and judging by the name, i think even dvds too, the reason why i choosed to use this player is because it lets you use subtitles, among other kewlio stuff =P

I think this poll is pretty much done, so I'll move it back to the Announcements forum. Even though it looks like DivX won the vote, Bowser wanted to change his vote to WMV, making them even. I think WMV would cause fewer problems since people don't have to download a separate codec, so I think I'll try putting clips up in that format for now.
