View Full Version : April's lack of a lovelife in the original cartoon

So as we know April is nearly always romantically paired with Casey in nearly all incarnations. However in the OT Casey was a wacko and he and April never got romantically involved. Besides that April never got with anyone else on-screen either, and never mentioned wanting to date anyone.
In the Konami Arcade games based on the OT, they said April was 27:

Do you think OT April ever had a boyfriend? Or was, "married to her job?"
At age 27 she was nearing 30, so I'd find it surprising if she never had a romantic partner at all by then.

It was mentioned that she dated a scientist that worked for Dark Water in State of Shock.
She also went out with Seymour Gutz at the end of Enter:Mutagen Man after he changed his appearance.
She also had Casey Jones's number so there could have been an underling relationship between them.
As mentioned above, she was a career woman, but she did date just never had a serious dating relationship because her career came first. None of the human leads have that much of a romantic history, none of the four focused members of the Channel Six News team or Saki or Yoshi. Romance was perhaps the one element that was rarely applied in TMNT 1987 and TMNT as a whole. TMNT has the ability to tap into many genres, but aside from pairing their human friend with the most common human they fight alongside (Casey Jones) there is not much in romance for April or TMNT as a whole.
As far as April's stats, considering the Turtles are supposedly around 5ft tall and she is not even an inch over 5 feet, I find it off. I would have though April to be around 5'6.

Its interesting because she had a love life in the comics. She's normally paired with Casey Jones. But in the Archie Comics. She was paired with Chu Hsi who can turn into Hothead the Warrior Dragon.

Interestingly enough as a kid, April being single made her that much more desirable. Like I don't think it woulda been the same if she was fawning over a guy consistently on the show as an official love interest.

Looking like that, she'd be fighting off potential suitors left and right, especially as a TV reporter which would make her something of a local celebrity. Every guy she knew would be trying to see what was going on under that jumpsuit.
This is one'a those, "It's a kids show so we don't need to go there" kinda things, for sure. No chick with a body like that stays single unless they got the Herp, or worse.

I'm sure that was meant as 5'8" not 5'.08".
And plenty of heathy women have a healthy weight of 115lbs. It was the 80's, and the fatdemic wasn't in full swing yet (https://stateofchildhoodobesity.org/adult-obesity/).
Just because 40% of the US is fat, doesn't mean 115 is underweight.
Also, we all know a turtle dick is impressive as all hell, and there were 4 of them.

Is there anything that contradicts that profile from Turtles the Arcade game saying April is 27? That feels like it would be right about her age in the original cartoon, but I don't know if she was ever stated to be anything else.
Funny how that videogame profile also shows April sporting some massive cleavage with her top unbuttoned, she didn't have it like that in the show. Looks like a pic you'd see in a modern day online dating site like OKcupid or tinder but it's from 1991.

In "Leatherhead: Terror of the Swamp", April does say that she is 28.
Close enough, I guess.

And that is one reason why I think the game is lying about her being 115 lbs.
No way is a woman of her height (which I think could also be wrongly reported, she towers over the turtles) and curvature that light
Leo656
04-02-2020, 06:48 PM
I was gonna say, I definitely remember April explicitly stating in at least one episode of the old cartoon that she was either 27 or 28 but I couldn't remember which.
I also think 115 lbs is extremely light for a woman about 5'8 with that amount of "curvature". I'm about 5'8 with a fairly "slight" but reasonably athletic frame, BMI about 26%, and I weigh on average anywhere between 160 and 175 depending on a variety of factors. Granted, I'm a dude, but my arms and legs aren't significantly thicker than any average person, be they male or female. The median "healthy" weight for anyone who stands 5'8 would be between 130 to 150 based on a variety of factors. A woman at that height who weighed 115 would be borderline anorexic-looking. They definitely wouldn't have such large, full breasts. I used to perform physical evaluations on people almost every day and there really isn't a ton of variance in body types and body structure. One of my most fit female clients is about 5'7 with almost no body fat, with fairly ample, er, "assets", and she recently weight in at about 142.
Given the way she's drawn, I'd put FW April at about 130-ish if she's 5'8. That's about average, especially given how she's neither drawn to be "buff" nor a stick figure.
This does roll right into something I always used to laugh about in fighting games, though, with the characters' body weights being just completely wrong. Like half the guys in Street Fighter II or whatever would always be underweight by a good 30-50 lbs based on how muscular they were drawn to be and what their listed height was. Always gave me a chuckle, but moreso once I started working in the fitness industry and was constantly looking at data on what weights generally went with various body structures.
Bottom line, video games are generally bullsh*t when it comes to getting vital stats correct. But I guess that's to be expected, given how most games are programmed by stick-thin, chain-smoking Japanese people who probably don't work out. :trazz: How're they supposed to know? They're just making up numbers.

I bet you part of it might have been the ethics and censorship board. After all we can't show she might be sleeping with someone and not married, better to have her single and not seeing anyone so the young mind can fantasize about her dating them and only them. Then again that might explain alot of the porn that's popped up over the years.

April was 115, a normal health weight. If you fat, its time to diet. get over it.
We've seen the pictures. Most of you are more than big boned. That doesn't mean April is in anyway underweight. Normalizing obesity is wrong.
And if you fat and you trying to say fat is normal, well, these days, I guess it is, but its now 1/3rd is fat, and that's not a good normal, even if it the new normal.
This is why so many of you are getting sick. Put the GD pizza down.
Also, the turtles would weigh almost twice that. Bone shells would be heavy AF.

We've seen the pictures. Most of you are more than big boned. That doesn't mean April is in anyway underweight. Normalizing obesity is wrong.
The BMI Standard is:
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
And if Konami FW April is 5'8" with a weight of 115lbs her BMI is 17.5, so underweight.
If JP Bio card 2k3 April is 172cm tall and weight 56.7kg, her BMI is 19.2
But, by all means. The BMI Standard is flawed as it's not favorable to short people and the only factors are height and weight it can be wrong. After all, Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime is by MBI Standard considered a whopping Obese 31.
But the end of the day, TommyT is just trolling, it was clear from the get go, and should be really obvious when he listed his wife's cup size. Cup size means jack **** without band measurement( ex. 34A is actually the same cup size as a 32B and 30C ), so he's just spouting out words and terms he thinks means something to keep up his trolling charade

If April O'Neil did share a romantic relationship with anyone, it was probably toned down to the point of non-existance just so the kids would focus on the action scenes, new mutants to appear in the show, and so on.
As for April having Casey's number, they were probably buddies. Maybe he would call her up whenever he decided to go do his vigilante duty within the city. After all, the ratings for Channel Six can only go up when the street punks are filmed getting their butts handed to them by a hockey mask wearing lunatic when the Turtles weren't available.

15-20 BMI is healthy and NORMAL. It is dangerous to fall below a certain fat index for women. Men can get as low as 5% and still be fine. fit individuals fluctuate between 10-15.
over 25 is obese. 30 is edging into MORBIDLY OBESE.

I mean... in SOME sense, the guy wasn't 100% wrong, insofar as normalizing ACTUAL obesity is unhealthy and I say the same thing all the time, but... well, as I well know, sometimes you can be "right" on principle but still so completely off-putting about delivering the message that nobody listens to it anyway.
So, uh... I been out, and I see the guy's Banned. What'd I miss?

So konami FW April is underweight and JP bio card 2k3 April is in the lower end of normal weight by bmi standards
Japan is weird when it comes to weight for example Kanna Kirishima from Sakura Wars is a 6'6 tall muscular woman, so of course her weight is 171 lbs

By the way I know its not wise to speak ill of the banned but its kinda funny how Tommy can't understand how 110lb for a 5'8 adult woman is underweight but thinks Rise has bad anatomy

I was in love with april from the moment I set eyes on her. Too bad cartoons aren't like "who framed Roger rabbit?" In reality. I would marry that woman. Sigh

I'm kinda crushing on the chick in the above-posted pic, myself.
My tastes are generally all over the place.

In the episode "Leatherhead: Terror of the swamp" April says "Oh, great! I'm doomed to be a decrepit twenty-eight-year-old hag!"
The Konami arcade game was released on October 11th 1989 and the Leatherhead episode was aired on November 3rd 1989, so either that was a mistake or she had aged up after the events of the arcade game.
as for love interests, half the time she's too busy working or looking for a news story to think about romance.
Rex-1 was sweet to her but he's a robot (as she states at the end of his introduction episode)
she and Irma have sweet moments, but she is "married to her career" part of her personality and part of the time, (being the 80s career woman) there are sometimes moments where she isn't working where she's either at her or Irma's apartment or with the turtles
if April did get a lover, she'd want someone who understands her and loves her for who she is and not just for her looks.

April worked a lot and had a very hectic life ever since she met the Turtles. A boyfriend would be hard to write into the series. Plus, the series is not a romance. I doubt most of its audience would have much interest in a romantic subplot involving April.

April already has a lifelong companion: the rope.
Get it? ‘Cause she’s always getting kidnapped and…
Aw, forget it. :tsweatdr:

On top of being a "married to her career" type... maybe she was actually rather socially awkward? I mean, look at the company she kept. The likewise awkward girl from work, mutant Turtles, a crazy guy... Maybe she really just wasn't all that skilled at forming romantic relationships, let alone average platonic ones.
I mean, the one time she thought she could be really hitting it off and he, well, turned into Bugman. lol Accepting flaws has limitations and no one wants a partner turning into THAT in the middle of you know what. Talk about traumatized.

I think she was simply a career oriented woman. I know TV isn't real life, but whenever I eat h shows or movies set in NYC, there's always several female characters who fit the archetype. April clearly loves what she does for a living. Honestly, I still think journalist is the best job for her. You could do so much with that. Lab assistant April lost her job early on because her boss was a nut job, and then she ended up just running an antique store. Kinda makes all the time and money spent studying science at uni a waste doesn't it?
I mean, who else at her workplace other than Irma would make a good friend? Burne? Nope. Vernon? Lol no way. We never got to know the rest of the Channel 6 staff well. Blodgett only showed up in one episode and others were background characters with no names.
April was probably just a rather introverted person. People erroneously often think that introverts are people who are shy and socially awkward, but that's not the case. April seemed very "normal". Plus, in a competitive workplace like hers in a very competitive city like NYC, it can't be easy to make friends. Irma wasn't competing with April's spot as Channel 6's humber 1 reporter like Vernon was.
As for Brick Bradley, I think she just found him handsome. No idea if she'd fallen in love with him if he had not turned into Bugman.
In the first Red Sky season, April mentioned she had a former boyfriend or something who worked at some place in the past that the Turtles were investigating. I haven't seen that episode in ages but you probably know which one in talking about.

I always chock that up to one of those random hand-wave whatever excuses to keep the plot going. Kinda like 'hey remember that one guy Splinter took in as a pupil for a while but he abandoned us that we never ever saw in any episode ever until his 'return' episode. Or Splinter conveniently having a treasure map on his kimono and it never being brought up.

Yeah, that was kinda random/convenient too. At least for the OT versions of April and Casey, there's no reason she would even have his number. Especially since they never even interacted in any of Casey's previous episodes.
