View Full Version : Slash as a possible fifth turtle?

So I was coming up with how I would create a TMNT series and the main idea I introduce was that Slash instead of being a snapping turtle. He was going to be biologically related to them. This version's origin story is something very similar to the IDW incarnation of the turtles where they were test subjects for Baxter Stockman and I had it that due to Slash being bigger than his brothers (That does happen in real life that turtles from the same clutch of eggs can be different sizes as babies) and more resistant to the experiments done on him. Baxter tested on him more compare to the others, until Splinter and the turtles escape, but Slash gets separated from them and was found by Stockman and experimented on more. While the turtles and Splinter goes into the sewer and grow up and learned martial arts etc. I would have it that the turtles do rescue Slash probably somewhere in the first half of season 1 and I had his personality be similar to the 2003 Leatherhead where he's a gentle giant, but have primal out bursts due to the torture by Baxter. What do you about this ?

Right. Every franchise needs a Token Bitch to bring the whole thing down. Pretty much a law now, ain't it?

Maybe but I wanted to try something a little different and I chose Slash as the fifth since most people I know and seen weren't really happy with his interpretations throughout the different incarnations.

Every poorly written character deserves a chance at redemption.

Honestly, your idea seems super, SUPER close to IDW. What's the difference?

I agree on principle.

Personally I like Slash as the “Bangai hero” of Sentai, where it’s an extra hero but not a part of the main team. Like Wolzard to the Magirangers.

Not a bad idea. Kinda iffy on the whole blood related thing or having to put a 5th in there in general, but I don't mind the concept of being separated and experimented on and giving him issues that make sense and coincide with it. Kind of creates a decent explanation for why Slash tends to be portrayed as a bit disturbed and more bestial than the TMNT.

Hmph. Well on that note the 5th should be be a dumb fanboy, some stray human they adopt and name Zach or Timothy, because every franchise needs dumb fanboys to ruin everything.

Yeah and I wasn't going to have him with the turtles all time cause I have it that Splinter would want to teach him the same way as the others. So we'll have the main four throughout it but we still see Slash hanging around the lair when the turtles aren't out into the city and if they need the extra muscle Slash goes with them. It's only till later like around the time the foot clan get's introduce where Slash slowly becomes more the "fifth" turtle. Sort of see the development of him becoming a full ninja. As well as for the fans to slowly warm up to the idea.

Slash acted as a temporary fifth turtle once he became a good guy in the Archie Comics, sending Maligna and Null on a Sunny vacation.
People love the idea of a fifth turtle.
Look at how often people bring it up, all the "fifth" turtles we have already in the franchise. Goes to show the hate for Venus is unwarranted when so many people asked for a fifth member.

I've always agreed with Laird that it's a fairly vapid idea with very little actual reasoning for it. Like it begins and ends with, "SO, what if... there were actually FIVE of them?" Like that's the entire hook, in and of itself. And there's not much that can be done story-wise to justify altering the dynamic so significantly. From a writing standpoint, it's hard enough to juggle four main characters, let alone five. Any "fifth Turtle" on the team is just clutter for the sake of shock value, in my humble opinion. The four of them create a pretty good and balanced team between their various personalities, strengths and weaknesses. Like, even when they added Venus, it was very obvious that they didn't even know what to do with her, so "I got it! She's MAGIC!" is what they came up with, and it was lame. It's just a hard idea to justify through execution no matter how exciting it sounds on paper, so I can't say I've ever been a fan of the concept even a little bit. Four is plenty.
That said, though, I've always liked Slash as a concept, and I say as a concept rather than "as a character" because as it's been said, Slash's presentation across all media has been very inconsistent, to the point where if someone asked "Who is Slash?" the answer would be needlessly complicated. And I would in fact like a really solid, "definitive" take on the character. I just don't think making him an official part of the team as a "fifth Turtle" would be necessary or even desirable in order to make his character work. But I would like to see him done proper justice.

The "fifth" turtle just shouldn't be. Regardless if it's Venus, Slash, Jennika, April or that scrapped abomination Kirby. Now I can accept Slash as being off with the Mutanimals, Tokka being a minion of the Shredder, Lita running around as an orphan in mutant town, Hun getting mutated in Turtles Forever, Chompy being a pet or even Jennika if she have to go now because her planet needs her.
But I will never accept the fifth turtle as a concept. It's like a fourth stooge or a third Mario Brother, it's out of place.

Thank you.
Anyway, my general statement even applies to that joke. As long as Jennika is presented as the "fifth turtle", I'm not really going to accept her. However if she's rebranded as, let's say, a mercenary in Dimension X with looser ties to the Turtles, it'll be much more agreeable.

I do agree with you on the fact that Slash doesn't really have a solid definitive character since if you ask someone "Whose Slash?" the answer is usually "Oh he's the evil crazy ninja turtle". The reason I wanted to put Slash on the team in my incarnation is that we can see him develop as a character and it's something interesting for the tmnt mythos. I mean if we can one version of tmnt where Splinter was a human turn rat or the pet of Hamato Yoshi or even the case of the idw comics where Splinter and the turtles are the reincarnations of Hamato Yoshi and his sons. I don't see having Slash being a fifth turtle is too much a bad thing. I feel like it's just a matter on how it's written and shown.
I just don't like women. So why did you marry one?

1. Because I'm not gay (although those people seem to have a lot more fun so maybe I should consider it).
2. Women never show you their Final Form until after they've got you locked down. So, like many other men, I was sold a bill of goods and didn't know what I was dealing with until it was too late.
It's my own fault, I know. I have this nasty habit of giving people the benefit of the doubt and looking for the best in them, but really, that's incredibly stupid and I really should've known better even back then. What can I say? Nobody wants to die alone, cuz.
Hope that answers your question.

HAH, yeah, for you guys's sake. You guys think I'M nasty to people. Hah. HAH hah. Whooooo. I'm the nice one out of the two of us.
She joined once for about a week many years ago before leaving in disgust. She hates you all so much that sometimes I have to sneak around just to be on this website. "Oh my GOD, are you seriously talking to those morons again?" And that's me dumbing it down, she's nowhere near that nice about it (and uses much harsher terms than "morons" that I probably shouldn't repeat here). I catch less hell for looking at porn than I do for coming here. Then I remind her that her little "friends" in her various Facebook groups are hardly any better, and she drops it. But yeah, no, she wouldn't come here. Not willingly. Lucky for you's.
She also hates women more than I do, anyway, though, so I don't think anything I've said here would be an issue. I generally refer to females as either "goofy hens" or "dizzy broads" because she thinks it's hilarious and encourages such behavior. She's quite the enabler.
Also, regardless of all that, we've been together 20 years, so our mutual disdain for each other is hardly any secret. It is what it is. Past a certain age, people generally only stay together because rent is expensive. Most married people I know are in the "separate bedrooms, never see each other except passing through the kitchen" phase by now, so at least we're a little bit ahead.
Anyways. Your display of false concern is much appreciated, friend. :trazz:

Of course there can't be a fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse, if there was he'd be the lame one since all the cool themes are taken.

I think an interesting idea would be to have Slash a a temporary 5th member of the team, who is later disowned by the other turtles and Splinter due to his villainous tendencies.
That way, we can experiment with the idea but then ultimately return to an established status quo of the franchise.

The entire concept of a 5th turtle doesn't work at all for many reasons:
Casey Jones and April are close confidants and essentially members of the team. A 5th turtle crowds things.
Venus was a terrible idea and her execution was awful in that old show. And Kirby didn't really work either. He looked far different than the 4 brothers and... Kirby doesn't fit with the Italian Renaissance names... Sorry, Kirby fans, one of these things IS NOT like the others.
Slash works best as he is in the IDW version, a one-off villain turned Mutanimal turned ally. When he was sacrificed MY HEAD EXPLODED. As a 5th turtle (an actual member of the TMNT), no thanks!
The turtles have so many supporting characters in allies and villains that it just makes things crowded...
That said, I was falling in love with Jennika as a character, hoping they would flesh out the master-student relationship between her and Splinter and then I read issue #95. MY HEAD EXPLODED. Oh, oh, really? A 5th turtle? A girl turtle? Haha. Are they renaming her Venus? (thankfully NO). Does she work as a 5th turtle? Still remains to be seen. I preferred her as the ninja-apprentice.
