View Full Version : The future of Rise

Do you think Rise is getting cancelled after these four episodes titled Final ? or Do you think the show's going the route of the 2012 series where they are going to call it by a different name? and what about the Netflix's movie?

neatoman

If the show does not end on episode 39(B), which judging from the title it will, then the final episode is instead episode 52(B). In either case this will make it the shortest TMNT cartoon to date, although not the shortest TMNT show, that would still be Next Mutation. The Netflix movie has presumably already been made so it will be released.

Rise will in all likelyhood not be continued with a title change or at all. When a show is moved to Nicktoons it's basically confirmation of cancellation. The next TMNT cartoon (whenever the time comes) will probably have nothing to with Rise and is most likely a reboot without ties to anything else.

I can hardly even guess at this point. I've seen their usual generic "in two weeks" tv ad once, though nothing promoting a finale of any sort.

I would think it would sort of need to go somewhere past the part 4 "Rise" one still, else that isn't really rising and the series title is sorta pointless? (I mean, that would be like one called... I dunno, "April Goes to College," but then she doesn't go until the last ep. :tconfuse:)

Still wondering though if it is going to disappear until the Netflix thing drops, and then maybe finish season 2 with another tone...

I read somewhere that the next episodes were pushed to August 21st.

I don't know why Nicktoons is releasing two episodes on one day a month. Sounds like a weird way to finish off a show. I will say it's different than how CN ended Beware the Batman.

Wasn't it confirmed Season 2 was the final season awhile girl? There's still apparently an animated movie for Rise coming, so the show is still getting one final story after it ends.

Nah, girl (:trazz:), I don't recall hearing anything like that ever confirmed. Just easy to assume there is no season 3, else we'd probably know about it by now.

What confused me is images I've come across showing that McDonald's I guess had 'Rise' kid's meal toys around May? Kind of weird to promote a show that already was rarely on and possibly ending early. :tconfuse:

Well, that's a little telling, if it was related.
Though in the case of a show, good things don't normally get cut short.

That date was from TV Passport tv guide website, they've made a lot of mistakes. There season 2 episode guide is mess.

Anyway, new episodes are back this coming Friday.

Huh. That's a shame as they actually look kind of interesting and thought out for a kid's meal toy. (edit: Then again, some countries do notoriously get better toys than we do.)

I doubt that 39 is going to be the LAST episode but my guess is that they are going to revamp the title and lose "Rise".

It was said that season 2 will have 26 episodes and the last show Nick decided to cut short was Invader Zim and that one had a 4 year haitus between seasons so I doubt Rise is going to end in 39 episodes.

NinjaPug

I wonder if they decided to have the Netflix movie in lieu of the second half of the season.

It's weird that the episodes are being labeled as the finale but there's been no official work from anyone - just tweets from folks who work on the show hinting this is the end.

Is it really that bad?

I know IMDB rates it pretty darn low and what I've seen does not look particularly inspiring, but anything new can take time to find it's stride if you stick with it.

Can I take it that ROTTMNT is not worth investing any of my time in?

I haven't watched much past the first 10 eps, but there's people who enjoy it.

After the show ends I plan to marathon it to give it a fair and proper viewing, but this is the first TMNT cartoon I didn't feel compelled to watch new as it was airing. I dropped it after the first 10ish episodes, the long hiatus didn't help.

But as said I will do a proper watch of the show in full after it ends. I don't like to judge shows before seeing them fully.

IMDB's rating is only low because people like Benz here don't like change and/or shows that are targeted at people 20 years their junior. They mark it low 'cause they're angry they aren't being catered to.

If you're closed minded & have a very specific idea of what TMNT is "supposed" to be, you may hate it. If you like frenetic action & very silly humor, it could suit you fine. This is like the Warheads sour candy version of the turtles (which I love, personally).

Depends on what you like out of your TMNT. If you want a TMNT series that's basically like every other kid cartoon on tv these days, hey, go for it.

If not and you prefer a more consistently serialized series, there are a handful of episodes potentially worth watching together. Most of them are also the "longer" full half hour eps.

My personal suggestions:

Season 1

Ep
1 - Mystic Mayhem
2 - Origami Tsunami (could skip, but introduces Foot and paper ninjas)
7 - Bug Busters
13 - The Evil League of Mutants
16 - Shadow of Evil
25 - Insane in the Mama Train
26 - End Game

Season 2

27 - Many Unhappy Return
30 - Repairin' the Baron (could skip, but would leave a plot hole in character relationship)
37- Battle Nexus: New York

Plus any of the next that could be worth watching.

At some point after it's over I just intend on binging those that I feel are worth it and get a better look at it that way with all the random junk out of the way.

Also, if the portrayal of their personalities matters to you, then you may or might not care for the changes depending on who your fave is. Mikey is largely fine, but due to the rest he doesn't really stand out on his own so much anymore. Raph is mostly fine, provided you don't mind his fire largely being extinguished. Donnie... this one is the arrogant jerk version, to put it bluntly. Leo... hoo boy... quite out of character from his normal portrayal. Personally, I don't care to see this personality on him again.

Come to think of it... the paper ninjas are where? This show had all these "new ideas" that have been underutilized and/or just not seen in quite a while. Paper ninjas, Mayhem, kid Purple Dragons, kid Baxter, Draxum as a villain could have lasted longer... I'm sure there are others. Heck, even the Mystic City has just barely even been a backdrop for this series, with most appearances being one-off eps.

I'll wait until the movie is about to be released to have everything fresh. I wish the show gets a proper ending tho.

I agree, most of the half-hour episodes are definitely the best in the series, but there are also a few of the more "filler" ones that are quite enjoyable. The series as a whole (so far) is kind of "meh" for me, but I do look forward to new episodes when they air. I just don't watch episodes over and over again like I have with the last two series.

I think the biggest turn-off for me on this series is the characterizations for the Turtles. I agree with your descriptions of their personalities, but I do like Mikey the best in this series. Raph isn't horrible, either. Leo and Donnie are definitely my least favorite, and Donnie's arrogant, jerk-y attitude is the biggest turn-off for me of them all. I don't mind April all that much, and Splinter has grown on me.

IndigoErth

and Donnie's arrogant, jerk-y attitude is the biggest turn-off for me of them all..
It's rather unfortunate that they made him that way. In the beginning I really thought it seemed like he was just rather witty and maybe the best of the group in that way and potentially a 4th wall breaker in observation of the other three...but then it became apparent that it isn't witty humor, he's just a jerk. :ohwell: What has became of sweet, good hearted Donnie...

Improving Mikey from not being such a dunce is good. Likewise Raph if some are tired of the angry thing. (Albeit seeming kind of bland, imo, since they didn't replace it with a better trait.) But for some reason they took the two cooler headed, more reserved boys and made them a jerk and an cocky idiot. *sigh*

But I guess we'll find out soon if these next eps are the end of it. Unless they choose to be vague about it.

It's definitely ending. The toys have all dried up. Keep in mind that TMNT is very much a show tied to its toy sales and has been for every series. If there's no merch being put out (and there hasn't for most of the year, and barely any in the back half of 2019 either) then you should see the writing on the wall.

Thanks for that may need to give it a whirl - just forcing my son to watch the 2012 series with me currently :D

I think things need to evolve occasionally - certainly expectations change and the quality of many kids TV shows are far superior to the Saturday morning pap many of us older fans remember. Personally I'd love to see a more mature incarnation similar to the Castlevania animated series but don't think that's where the money is.

I don't wish any ill-will on anyone who is either working on the show or a fan of it.

But from a selfish, human, perspective, I am more than glad to see this show fail, because it will send the message to Nick and Viacom that this is not the ideal way to handle the franchise. It's about as far away from traditional as you can get, which is not what I want. And hey, if you read my posts around here, you should know I'm pretty open-minded with adaptions, but this is just a bridge too far.

While I’m breaking my promise this time, it’s not to express hate for the series (while I fully agree with AquaParade here, my dislike for the series has toned down significantly since then), or even to express an opinion.

Rather, I saw this on Tumblr. Whether the poster saw this thread or not, it appears the supporters of the show over there are also aware of the poor ratings.

Agree.

It's weird looking back at when many worried, myself included, that some of the choices of that 2014 film could be elements that Nick might decide to try to permanently embed into TMNT forever. (Which potentially can be seen a tiny bit in 'Rise' in some design choices if we're honest.) But then this comes along with some of these ideas and I now realize that at least a movie is a one and done kind of deal and less influential than a show that plays for a couple of years.

It's definitely ending. The toys have all dried up. Keep in mind that TMNT is very much a show tied to its toy sales and has been for every series. Oh, definitely. Question is, is today the day or are they still going to drag the twitching body of it out to the originally intended end of season 2.

If they actually try to do what '87 and 2003 did late in the series and revamp it, albeit not even for a whole season or more like those shows, I'll be surprised. Yet not too surprised they might try it.

Rather, I saw this on Tumblr. Whether the poster saw this thread or not, it appears the supporters of the show over there are also aware of the poor ratings.

Yeah, have seen a small minority of "save Rise" stuff online for a while. All I can say to them is good luck. Even a good show like 2012 that still put toys on the shelf for some of the end series arcs (that only this year did I finally find my 2012 holy grail of an affordable Monster Hunter Leo) was not extended any additional seasons.

Leo656

I look at it like this: Not everything works for Everything, and context is important.

There are things this show tried to do that I like better in other avenues. But not at all what I'd ever wanted to see done with TMNT as an official product.

It's kinda like how my wife and I both love Robot Chicken and Family Guy... but we hated the Harley Quinn show despite it having a ton in common with those other shows. Same style of humor, same type of jokes, same level of "aim low and be as trashy as possible for shock value", but for whatever reason, I can handle it in shows that are making fun of that material, not from shows that are purporting to be an official part of the franchise. Jokes about Batman f*cking bats are kinda funny in a spoof show, not in an "official" show that just says "Well we're a spoof!" to excuse any and all bad/juvenile writing. And also, officially-licensed "parodies" are terrible by definition. Making fun of yourself isn't funny, it's sad.

Likewise, there's things about Rise that would appeal to me more in a different context. As an official TMNT product, I feel it was a waste of resources and did even more damage to an already-busted brand. After the Nicktoon and the BayTurtles fiasco, "Get Sillier" was NOT even 1% of what I ever wanted to see happen. And I know for a fact that most TMNT fans agree. They're very vocal.

I don't think it's fair to simply accuse people of being afraid of change. Some things just don't work. I heard the same stuff back in '96 when they made Superman into "Electric Man" for a year and a half. Same thing, especially from the DC higher-ups. "Just give it a chance; you just don't like anything being different", etc. etc. And I did give it a chance. I own all the issues, I've read them all multiple times, and I'll give credit where it's due: They did a very good job in TRYING to put the whole thing over as a good idea. They put the work in, tried to explain it and justify it in-story... it just didn't work. They actually put more work into forcing the change, than they did when they caved in to fan pressure and let him just be "regular" Superman again - point of fact, they went to great lengths to explain WHY he had these new powers all of a sudden, but just gave up and didn't even TRY to explain it when it came time to give him his old gimmick back. That was lame, but people were so fed up, I guess they didn't feel like it was worth bothering with an explanation.

That Superman storyline was an interesting experiment, and a chance to "do something new" with a character who's so often been accused of being "stale" or "boring" or whatever... but in the end, it didn't accomplish anything. Well, not anything GOOD; what it DID do, was waste over a year's worth of issues on stuff nobody wanted to see, make the character a punchline in the mainstream media, made DC a laughingstock because of how transparently desperate they were, and sent the books' sales into the gutter for the next 10 years, whereas they'd been doing "steady, but not great" before. I'm sure a few people did like that whole arc, but 20+ years later, even DC commonly admits that it was a mistake, a failure, and never should have been attempted. They've even done in-story bits apologizing for the whole thing, more than once.

Again, some things just do not work. With regard to "Rise", the nicest thing I can say is what I said after watching the first episode: "TMNT by way of Loony Tunes" was not something I ever wanted to see. It bothers me because like Electric Superman, I feel that it's a supreme waste of resources; the longer it goes on, the longer it will be before we get a "real" show that does more than just aim for cheap gags. If there was another show running concurrently and Rise was just "another thing", maybe it would be different. But as the thing that currently carries the TMNT "banner" in the absence of anything else? No. That's just wrong on every level.

I guess it's just disheartening to see a franchise that's had the piss taken out of it so many times, in so many avenues, just plain "give up" and start taking the piss out of itself. "Yeah, we know, it's stupid! That's what makes TMNT great... that it's stupid!" That's how I see people defend it on FB. Is it, though? Is "It's SO stupid" really the thing that makes TMNT so "great"? I never thought that.

Like others said, it's fine if people like it - although I question their values - but selfishly I'll be glad that it's over, if only because that leaves a 1% chance that a "real" TMNT show of quality will come out in the near future.

It won't, because "Nickelodeon", but still. That hypothetical better show can't come out until Rise is over with. So in the meantime all it is, is an obstacle. Given how many people are so vocally against it, it really doesn't make any sense to keep it around longer than necessary, other than to try and save face on how badly they miscalculated. Like with how it's cancelled, but they won't say so out loud. Why would they? Do people commonly trumpet failure, or do they just quietly and sheepishly slink away while people are distracted? The toys have been off shelves since Christmas; it's over.

Tough break for those who do enjoy it, but... well, history will vindicate the "haters", and that's just the way it is. There's no way we WON'T all collectively look back at this in 25 years with the same regretful eyes our parents have for bell bottoms and afro-perms. It is what it is.

I, frankly, can go the rest of my life without any more "Can you BELIEVE they actually did that?" from this franchise. I know... nobody asked. :trazz:

Well, sure, but when has "Can you BELIEVE...?" ever been applied to THIS franchise in a positive manner? :trazz:

It's always only ever used for things like "Turtle Tunes" and "Next Mutation". If it was ever said positively, I guess it was for the 1990 movie. I know I, for one, could not believe they did that. :trazz:

Since then, though? Yeah, only in the negative.

Poured out a heavy one and about to join my fellow Rise crew on Zoom to screen our finale and celebrate one more time. In an ideal world, we?d be together in person for this, but it?s probably best they don?t see this big man cry, anyway. Thankful beyond words to have been a part of this. So this season really did get cut short in half. Understandable. This would explain why Nicktoons was airing two episodes a month, since they knew it was ending at an odd number. But why even bother with a Netflix movie at this point?

Torterra

Well if this is end of Rise all I can say is "It's been interesting" at first when I saw the character designs I was taken back but I say "I want to wait till I see a trailer", saw the trailer and it piqued my interest saw the first couple of episodes and I really enjoyed it. I could tell that the team wanted to try something new by making the show be somewhat of a prequel seeing how the turtles became the turtles we know and they were some ideas I wouldn't mind or would like to see come back up in a future series like the Mystic city.

Was this show everyone's cup of tea ? no, but was it interesting and had it's moments ? yes, I feel like this show is going to be the "The Batman" or 'Beware the Batman" of the turtle's franchise. In that when it first came out most people especially hard core fans sort of dismiss it and only until after a year or two after cancellation did it get some more traction to eventually people will be saying "You know what that show wasn't so bad" but that's my opinion on that. Goodbye Rise, I hope you get some justice from that Netflix's movie and I'm looking forward to where this franchise goes.

Didn't that get debunked as fake news? I don't remember.

:lol::lol::lol: That meme's a good'n.

At least the speculation about the series' fate can be put to bed. I mean, it was only "speculation" to people who delusionally cling to hope and ignore all physical evidence, but at least it's confirmed. The thing's been dead all year long, the "coroner" was merely too sheepish to make it official. Because nobody at Nick has any balls.

I think the movie is still supposedly happening, but I have a feeling it will depend greatly on just how much of it they already have in the can. And if/when it comes out I don't think it's going to be exactly the same thing they envisioned when they announced it. It will probably have some of the stuff that was outlined for the remaining unproduced episodes stuffed into it, for starters, in addition to whatever else they were going to use to wrap things up.

If they've already started working on it and it's at least partway done, it'll probably come out. If they'd barely started on it, then maybe not. I've said this before but multiple, conflicting TMNT movie projects happening at the same time or even close together doesn't fit their model at all. So if the production of the Rise movie didn't get far, it wouldn't be a shock to see them very quietly sweep it under the rug.

Let's be blunt and completely honest; in less than 5 years even Nick is gonna pretend the whole series never happened. There's no way that DOESN'T happen. So in deference to that inevitability, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they ended up abandoning the Rise movie. Literally the only reason to even do it at all, is because they made a lot of noise about it back when they thought the show had a future. I wouldn't hold them to it. But we'll see.

If it does come out, I don't predict Nickelodeon throwing a parade over it. At this point it's a project of obligation more than anything. If they're even still doing it.

IndigoErth
08-08-2020, 02:23 AM
No, that was a live action series that was debunked. The 'Rise' Netflix articles were real. Presumably still is. The end of this show did allude to it even.

Leo656
08-08-2020, 02:52 AM
Andrew may also have been thinking of the fabled "third Platinum Dunes movie, which was gonna be another reboot". Which wasn't so much "officially debunked" but really doesn't need to be. That thing was never gonna happen, I doubt it even exists on paper anywhere.

Christ, if we're not at the point where this franchise has more cancelled/abandoned projects than ones that actually saw the light of day, we'll be there in a few weeks at this rate.

Was this show everyone's cup of tea ? no, but was it interesting and had it's moments ? yes, I feel like this show is going to be the "Batman Brave and the Bold" of the turtle's franchise.

Brave and the Bold was true to what Batman was in the gold and silver age. It won a lot of people over pretty quickly with the Planet-X episode because it was something modern fans knew from Morrisons run and then the Batmite episode which directly addressed the grievances that fans had by the time Chill of the Night came out I think it had won a lot of people over as a valid take on the character.

I can't speak a lot for Rise but it clearly has little to do with any pre-existing version of TMNT except that it takes unpopular elements that previous versions have used to make the concept fresh and puts them all one one product.

It's possible it's good, to my shame I quite like TMNT Fast Forward but aside from a few episodes it really doesn't 'feel' like TMNT. Maybe I 'll give Rise a second try but one day but I doubt it will ever be TMNT for me.

IMDB's rating is only low because people like Benz here don't like change and/or shows that are targeted at people 20 years their junior. They mark it low 'cause they're angry they aren't being catered to.

Or maybe people just don't think the show is good? I tried really hard to like it, but... Yeap, not something I'd call "good".

I second that! I feel bad for the Rise team and the fans, but I was afraid that the show would be a huge hit and the future iterations would be based on ROTTMNT. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to belittle Rise, it's just that some of the elements of this show don't suit my taste.

For me it's exactly the opposite, I love a moody, arrogant Donatello. Sweet Donnie is way too perfect, I liked it better when they have flaws. :)

But I like that about this Donnie, the show have brought this up a couple of times in the series that the reason he does this is because he's suppose to be the smart one and if you take that away from him what does he have left? as well as having daddy issues apparently but I don't know the flaws for "sweet" Donnie

I like some of the things they did with Donnie, though I didn't like how he would use "Bootyshaker3000" as a password. Or having a drone that is just programmed to favor him over the others.

I mean, 2012 Donnie could be obsessive and arrogant at times, but that was mostly because he really had trouble with socializing with his brothers and other people. After all he's used being cut off from everyone due to his inteligence. Much of the time when he is socializing with his family he's either working on his lap top or involved in some project while the rest of the time he's hold up on his lab. And the times he would point out his intelligence was more of a cry for attention then actual self-absorption.

You take away the Ninja and he's just the smart one.

This version of Donnie has trouble socializing or understanding his brothers as well. But his attitude is "I'm the smartest person in the room, that makes me better then all of you." April appears the be the only person he really sees as a friend and even then you don't understand that dynamic.

Still, even when he does something wrong he feigns ignorance of it. Such as when April had him fix up that Chuck E. Cheese rip off and he does more then fix it he "Improves it". Then later when Leo points that out Donnie's like "Sorry, that doesn't sound like something I would do."

The arrogant jerk, who also tried to change his brothers on more than one occasion, behaved poorly as a guest to that mystic witch town, etc? Personal preference, but I'd rather new flaws be enduring rather than kind of making him into a crappier person.

The other versions absolutely have their own flaws. I'm sure the big Donnie people can name others, but off the top of my head, based on various sources, he can definitely have a tendency to work himself into the ground, might freeze up (or get irritable) and not always work well under pressure, his curiosity and interests can occasionally allow him to get distracted (but he's pretty good at snapping back to focus pretty quick), like Leo he can have a hard time dealing if he feels responsible for something bad that has happened and likewise no one can make him feel differently except himself, though while Leo might beat himself up internally and become moody, Donnie may respond by working himself to death, to an unhealthy level, to try to fix it.

Leo656
08-11-2020, 04:43 PM
"He thinks too much" is literally a neurosis all its own, and you can spin that a million different ways in itself. No need to invent off-putting personality flaws out of nowhere in the name of adding "depth".

If I had to pile on, I'd go with the idea which has sometimes been presented that Don's the most pacifistic one of the group, the one who prefers to avoid violence whereas their entire lives are dominated by violence. That right there is interesting enough for a lot of stuff to be done with it.

True, that and thinking too much combined could potentially jeopardize reaction time in some situations. Potentially a fatal flaw, which is good reason for Splinter in some versions to have pushed him to learn to react immediately when necessary without getting caught up in overthinking it.

Leo656
08-11-2020, 05:01 PM
Yep.

Basically, the Turtles as we've known them for 30 years are fine. You don't have to "reinvent" every character into someone totally different and not recognizable in order to present something "new". That's not "creative", it's "lazy". "I can't work with what's there, I have to wipe the slate clean and rebuild from the ground up to better justify MY ideas." That just tells me that you're not much of a writer, and also arrogant and self-righteous. I feel that way about all "reboots" that go to such extremes.

You can simply take what's established and tell new stories that haven't been done with those resources. TMNT isn't The Simpsons, NOT every single story has already been told with these characters in their "correct" form and characterization. We don't need "reinvention", we need consistency and competent storytelling. Something most "writers" nowadays can't do because they're too busy trying to get paid for their fanfiction.

Josh Brener, fortunately, was not one of the main four characters on BBT. He played a character named Dale who was only around for two episodes.

Though he does play Mark Beaks in the Ducktales Reboot. A show he also voices in with the VA who plays Leonardo, who plays voice of Dewey Duck.

I get what you're saying guys, it's just that what you point out as flaws aren't really bad, BAD flaws... At least not in my opinion.

Donnie overthinks things and it might be a problem if it happens during a fight, yes, I agree. How many times has this happened in the past iterations, tho? I only remember of one occasion in which this "flaw" was acknowledged, back at the 2012 show. Heck, in the 2k3 show he'd come up with more ideas to save their necks when they were in dangerous situations than Leo who was their leader. And this isn't even a flaw that'd get people annoyed at him, like, Leo walks as if he had a stick shoved upon his ass and many fans find this very annoying, the same could be said about Raph's short-sighted and brute self and Mikey's antics. But overthinking doesn't make Donnie insufferable, on the contrary, the guy is a genius so it's kinda predictable that thinking too much would come with the package.

And yes, sometimes Donnie can be a little arrogant but so does his brothers. Raph believes he's the strongest and probably the best figther, Mikey... Well everthing can go over his head, and Leo always thinks he knows best...

I like Don and I am not saying that I want him to be a bad person, but he's already the genius, the pacifist, the gentle soul, the no judgemental, the diplomat, level-headed, polite and sensible brother so if they don't give him important flaws, then he'l be too perfect.

I've heard this quite often, actually, from many people.

It's like the people who made BBT just scripted a character as an unlikeable jerk, and then gave him that as a "shield" so that he'd have a built-in excuse to be a terrible person "for laughs". "It's not his fault he's an awful person, he can't help himself!" Which sort of paints a pretty terrible picture all its own.

We don't really have to get into it, I was just saying. Yeah, I've heard that refrain, and I agree. It's a bit offsides. I think I've heard that the actor has something going on in real life but that doesn't totally excuse the issue since I'm sure he's not the one writing the show.

Just spent half an hour reading through the "Rise is cancelled" thread, preparing to write something then realise the thread is locked! Damn!

So just jumped in here quickly. As a fan of the series I'm immensely disappointed this series was cancelled. i can understand why, it didn't hit the right notes with the fandom, but to pull it midway through season 2, so then the finale had to be hastily put together, was pretty sh*** of Nick. At least let us have season 2 now it started.

Silver lining for Rise fans is there will be the movie.

Feel like the show was really beginning to develop and bring in more fans, but hey-ho.

this is disappointing because season 2 finally started showing so much promise in what the show could be.. and what it was building up to be.

If Nickelodeon was expecting an instant success, i guess that's not what happened but.. some things TAKE TIME to get good.

My opinion of Splinter went 180 degrees once he started getting a lot more character development. He went from the worst version of splinter ... to the best version, with the most amazing backstory. Suffering loss after loss... in many ways. Truly the most tragic Splinter.

Rise's final stand will be the movie, so i hope they hit that ball out of the park so hard, that Nickelodeon will need to reconsider reviving it.

Now we've all seen that Nickelodeon likes to cancel shows that they don't like the numbers on. I.e. Hey Arnold (the original creator fought hard to get a proper conclusion). While all good shows come to an end, I am sad to see Rise Fall.

I originally saw the first 5 episodes before giving up on it. I might continue where I left off now and finish it off to see what they did.

Here's.. my recommendation, focused on splinter and some optional episodes so that you know at at minimum whats going on in the finale with the main characters. Any of the episodes related to the retrieval of the dark armor or side villains... is... kind of fillerish and you might as well watch the entire series all the way through for the other villains since you'll be like who is this?.

Season 1
001 "Mystic Mayhem" - obligatory first episode
02a "Origami Tsunami" - optional - intros the foot
007 "Bug Busters" - optional - for intro of Big Mama
12b "Hot Soup: The Game - optional - for intro of footclan new recruit
016 "Shadow of Evil" - must see - where Splinter's origin starts to get introduced
19b "How to Make Enemies and Bend People to Your Will" - must see - baron
22a "Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man" - optional - splinter focused
22b "The Ancient Art of Ninja Hide and Seek" - must see - starts getting good
025 "Insane in the Mama Train" - must see
026 "End Game" - must see

Season 2
027 001 "Many Unhappy Returns - must see
28b 02b "Goyles, Goyles, Goyles" - must see
30b 04b "Repairin' the Baron" - must see - baron character development
33a 07a "Always Be Brownies" - optional - development of foot clan recruit
34a 08a "Donnie vs. Witch Town" - optional - April development - short scene
36a 10a "Fists of Furry" - optional - April development as student of Splinter
037 011 "Battle Nexus: New York" - must see
38a 12a "Finale Part 1: E-Turtle Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" - must see
38b 12b "Finale Part 2: Shreddy or Not" - must see
39a 13a "Finale Part 3: Anatawa Hitorijanai" - must see
39b 13b "Finale Part 4: Rise" - must see

Some these are only important because they introduce characters that show up in plot relevant episodes. Skip them if you don't care.

"Mystic Mayhem"
"Origami Tsunami"
"Donnie's Gifts" (Just to know who Meat Sweats is)
"Newsworthy" (Just to know who Hypno is)
"Repo Mantis" (Just to know about the vehicle and some chatacters)
"Shell in a Cell" (Just to know who Ghostbear is)
"Bug Busters"
"The Longest Fight"
"Smart Lair" (Just to know who Shelldon is)
"Hot Soup: The Game"
"The Evil League of Mutants"
"Shadow of Evil"
"Warren & Hypno, Sitting in a Tree"
"Operation: Normal"
"How to Make Enemies and Bend People to Your Will"
"Mystic Library"
"Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man"
"One Man's Junk"
"Snow Day" (If you want to know why Ghostbear changed)
"Insane in the Mama Train"
"End Game"
"Many Unhappy Returns"
"Goyles, Goyles, Goyles"
"Repairin' the Baron"
"Battle Nexus: New York"
"Finale Part 1: E-Turtle Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
"Finale Part 2: Shreddy or Not"
"Finale Part 3: Anatawa Hitorijanai"
"Finale Part 4: Rise"

Will throw mine in too. My ultimate list is more conservative, cut down to what's needed for the arc and skipping the rest of the noise. Barring the fact that some of the others end with a piece of Shredder armor obtained or some such minor detail, the one-offs they are tacked onto are pretty inconsequential to skip.

Season 1

Ep
1 - Mystic Mayhem
2 - Origami Tsunami (could skip, but introduces Foot and paper ninjas)
7 - Bug Busters
13 - The Evil League of Mutants
16 - Shadow of Evil
25 - Insane in the Mama Train
26 - End Game

Season 2

27 - Many Unhappy Return
30 - Repairin' the Baron (could skip, but would leave a plot hole in character relationship)
37 - Battle Nexus: New York
38a/b - Finale part 1 & 2
39a/b - Finale part 3 & 4

Bonus ep... If you liked the 2012 series at all, also check out Raph's Ride Along.

I.e. Hey Arnold (the original creator fought hard to get a proper conclusion)

The creator Craig Bartlett actually wanted to continue the story, not conclude it. It was hoped Jungle Movie would lead into a sixth season, but the ratings for the film weren't that hot. It still works as a conclusion, but there were things in it that were designed to be sequel hooks. Craig wound up illustrating and writing a follow-up over on Instagram during lockdown

Shame it didn't happen. With all these shows people want to reboot, sometimes in the stupidest ways they can think of, god forbid a popular show come back and continue. Worked for Futurama, and I could see it working for Hey Arnold; may be a similar level of interest in it.

Rise... to get back to TMNT... eh, good luck. Can't blame people who liked it for wanting it back, but what is a hashtag or petition going to do? How would they intend on actually making it worth Nick's time and cost? 2012 was a hit and likewise its merchandise, and it still had new toys on the shelf for the final season. (Even though it had been moved to Nicktoons for quite a while!) This show, not so much. And as much as some liked to remind those of us who weren't into it that it's "not for us," that it's for kids... well clearly that kid target audience didn't buy into it either.

On the up side, TMNT is an evergreen, bound to keep coming back, and longtime fans are likely to find another future incarnation they also enjoy.

Side note... Was scrolling through upcoming 2012 eps in the tv guide and here's a fun little exercise - read the descriptions and picture what a Rise episode with that description would look like and how different it is. :trazz:

I very much doubt it. It'll stick around for "a while", but they've done a terrible job of enticing the Next generation of fans to get into the brand. And as I've often noticed, younger kids nowadays don't do nostalgia or form lasting bonds with the things they like.

TMNT will be around for at least the next 30 years or so. When the current group of 30/40-somethings start dropping dead, though, that's it. "TMNT" as a brand dies with us. History over the last 20 years has shown that it just doesn't play well outside of kids who grew up in the 80s.

So yeah, it'll hang on for a while yet but I definitely don't think it's "evergreen". I might've thought that once upon a time, but factual evidence disproves that theory. "Kids" and younger people haven't consistently cared about TMNT in over 25 years. By this point you have to assume it just doesn't play to them.

I dunno about that. I'd probably be considered a "new" fan. I'm only 21, and I got into the franchise primarily from the 2012 show. Sure, I saw some of the 2003 show back when it was on, but it's not like I remembered anything about it. Now I've seen every show, movie, and own and have read almost every comic, and I doubt that I'm the only one to do so. These days it's one of my all time favorite franchises. There's always hope.

I'm aware "new fans" exist but there's not enough of them to sustain the brand's popularity for another 80 years.

In 50 years or so, at best it'll be a thing like Dick Tracy. As in it'll be "Around" but nothing anyone pays any attention to. At worst it'll be one of those "Can you believe people actually liked ______?" bits on one of those "wacky" nostalgia shows.

Definitely wishful thinking.

Those other properties have occasionally been taken seriously for 5 minutes, which is what has allowed them to thrive for so long and constantly find a new audience with each passing generation.

TMNT, on the other hand, does nothing but try to pander to the new "lowest common denominator" and every "reinvention" does more harm than good. They turn off older fans and do nothing to create new ones. Sure, a few people fall into it by accident, but not that many.

Frankly, I'm fine with it. If "Rise" and the BayTurtles movies are indicative of what the Powers That Be want us to swallow from this franchise, then to be blunt the brand doesn't deserve to survive and I'll actually be kind of happy to see it retired. It should have been shut down over ten years ago, when we could still say "At least MOST TMNT things are Good." We'll never be able to say that again, and I'd rather see it pass away with grace and dignity rather than see a parade of diminishing returns aimed at a dumber and dumber audience every time out, which is what's been happening.

I've made my peace with the franchise. It's a zombie already anyways. I don't wanna be 80 years old and seeing some terrible "Rick & Morty"-style reboot of TMNT. I know it's a vast minority opinion, but a mercy killing would ultimately be for the absolute best. That way people could at least hang onto their GOOD memories without having them tainted by the deluge of unwatchable crap that's become the overwhelming legacy of this franchise.

Again, I am very well aware that this is a minority opinion. I prefer to see things go away while they're still Good. Toy Story should have stayed three movies, and TMNT should have been shelved in 2008. Probably even sooner, before "Fast Forward" came out.

They can keep doing toys, that's fine. Just no more movies or TV shows, please. I've seen enough to know I have seen too much.

Hey, it's been a rough decade since the Nick buyout. 10 straight years of nothing but junk would make anyone jaded! :trazz:

But even that doesn't change the "kids don't care about TMNT" factor, which is the larger problem. It would be one thing if it were a recent phenomenon, but nobody under 20 cared about the 2003 reboot, either. Kids weren't the ones buying the toys and kids weren't the ones watching the cartoon. Fast forward to the last few years, same thing. The same people who watched religiously in 1989 are watching religiously in 2020. But their own kids, or their nieces and nephews? Nah, they've got better things to do. Outside of a handful, a very, VERY small handful, nobody under age 30 cares about Ninja Turtles.

The same people who cared about TMNT in 1989 are 99% the same people who still care. That's nice, but it's also a huge problem; that being, only a very small number of younger people who are exposed to it nowadays bother to stick around for the long haul. That could be because the products aren't good, and it could be because "kids these days" just plain don't get as invested in things. Frankly, I think it's a bit of both. I don't like how Nick has handled the brand but I kinda just think it doesn't have enough to get peoples' interest anymore. I'm pretty sure it was mostly a product of its time.

Those 80s/90s kids aren't going to be around forever, and the brand simply doesn't get its hooks into people the way it did when we were kids. Anyone can do the math from there. Brands that can't continuously breed a new audience with every generation end up dying off. TMNT hasn't ever managed to do that. Even when people try and "force-feed" it to their own kids, those kids don't care about it.

That tells me that one day, it's gonna go away. Maybe not like, "erased from cultural memory" like stuff like SilverHawks has been, but at some point there won't be any more projects in active development for the brand, and it will be a "Remember that?" kind of thing.

I'd think differently if I've seen even one strong example in 30 years of a "New Generation" firmly latching onto the brand for more than a minute, but that never, ever happens.

I dunno, my nephew likes them. Maybe in ten years as a young teen he'll have given them up in favor of something else, or maybe he'll be busy discovering Mirage and borrowing my volumes, who knows. An aunt can hope. (But not via force.)

If he wants to watch Rise someday, that is up to him. Unfortunately, it's so hyper it would probably have him so wound up he'd be tearing down the walls, so right now that one is a solid NO. (Prob hardly the only kid banned from it for that reason...)

Who knows, someday after they've been mostly forgotten for a while, would be interesting if they ever had a renaissance AFTER copyrights die and they become public domain. Would be neat if people were to pick them back up and freely do everything they want with them, including whatever darker stuff no company would ever approve of in our time. Esp maybe some new independent films. Too bad we won't be alive to see if it ever happens.

Leo656
09-01-2020, 08:59 PM
My niece also liked it a lot very, very briefly around 2008 or so... then she got really heavy into Alvin & The Chipmunks. She's now thoroughly ashamed of all of that.

See, I don't even think the type of products being released is the biggest factor. Some people think a "Batman Begins" type of thing would spark a renaissance and enti e a whole new group of people into liking TMNT, and I kind of don't even think that would work. Kids fall out of love a lot quicker than our generation did. They don't seem to have the capacity for nostalgia; "Old Things" are just Old. New versions of old things are seen by them as being desperate and embarrassing. You could put out the coolest TMNT thing ever and the younger crowd would still dismiss it.

That's why I have a very hard time believing that there will even be a "new generation" of passionate TMNT fans. A, there's nothing presently worth being passionate about, and B, kids these days just don't have it in them to establish that kind of connection to anything, period. They go through interests faster than chewing gum and absolutely do not care what their Dads or older brothers liked.

It is what it is. I mean if I'm wrong and TMNT is still gasping and wheezing along in 100 years, that's fine. I just can't realistically see that happening. Not a single "reboot" of the brand has consistently captured the younger demo and I can't see how that would ever change. Tastes are just too fickle anymore.

Just putting my two cents in. I would be a new fan in the last 25 years. I'm 22 and first got into TMNT when the 2003 series was airing on TV. I loved my Shredder action figure and also had a sticker book and information book on the series (still have them all). I actually ended up growing up on the 80's cartoon as well since the network in Ireland was airing both the 80's and 2003 show simultaneously. They used to always show old cartoons in the mornings like the Flintstones, He-Man, She-Ra, etc. Since I was watching in Ireland, I always knew which version was airing since the 80's one was called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. Even though they were both very different interpretations of the turtles, I enjoyed watching both without one version tainting it for me. I did prefer the 2003 version since I like when there's an actual overall story with development and I preferred the characters. I still enjoyed the 80's show for its standalone episodes and a bit of fun. A bit like the way I'm viewing Rise at the moment. If I asked my mum, she'd probably say that the 80's was her favourite and Raphael her favourite even though I don't think she'd call the 2003 version of him her favourite.

I got into TMNT again when I was at home on my school holidays so I was about 16. I saw that a new series was airing and watched 'The Mousers Attack' episode. I got really into it and it actually caused me to chuckle now and again. I just fell in love with the characters again and loved the interactions between the brothers. I quickly caught up on all the episodes that I had missed and kept up to date with the US schedule. It also made me re-watch the 2003 show again. I re-watched the 2003 series with my brother who would have been about 19 at the time. I got him to watch the first three seasons of the 2012 series as well. The first season of the 2012 series was my favourite. I also tried to watch the 80s show again. I only got so far with that one.

I watched the first few episodes of Rise. My brother was not at all impressed with it though. I didn't hate it. However, I wasn't invested enough to keep up to date with its schedule and the fact that it wasn't always airing episodes in chronological order irked me. I'm catching up on the episodes and I'm actually enjoying them for what they are. For me, it's just a bit of fun that's not to be taken too seriously. Oddly, Leo is probably still my favourite even though he's completely different to any other version.

I have 3 close friends who I keep in regular contact with. They all speak of TMNT fondly with nostalgia. I asked them before who their favourite turtles were and all four of us had a different favourite. I found it interesting that we all went for the turtle who we were closest to personality-wise. I'm not as obsessed with TMNT as I was when I first came across the 2012 show. However, I think that I'll always come back to it. I have a few obsessions that seem to rotate but I always return to them at some point. I may always leave them for a while but I always seem to come back to them. I never had much time for the Bay movies (still haven't seen the second one) but they never caused me to dislike the series as a whole. I became disillusioned with Star Wars after seeing The Last Jedi in a way that never happened with TMNT. The disillusionment wore off and I started to feel better about it once I could just laugh at the Disney trilogy and consider it separate to the other films. I think that the reason for it is because every version of TMNT is a standalone that has no bearing on what has come before it unlike Star Wars where it was a continuation. I'm still happy to see new interpretations of the TMNT.

It does make me wonder if the original story for the movie was completely changed or at least altered a bit. I don't think they ever planned for Leo to become leader until the tail end of this show....and I was right. If this takes place after the show and he's the lead turtle again, then this had to have been reworked.

50/50 chance of this movie happening. On one hand, the ending alluded to the movie and the crew behind the show, kept tweeting "see you at the movies." On the other hand, with how they abruptly cut this season short, it won't be a shocker if it gets canned.

I'll be rather surprised if the movie doesn't deal with the Utroms. Possible it was going to all along anyhow and they just cut out the one-off junk episodes and jumped to the intended, if rushed, ending.

Little confused by their original claim about the stand alone movie still being kind of a link between seasons, but maybe they meant seasons 2 & 3, before they figured out that 2 would be the last. I suppose even then it may have intended to bring in the Utroms, but might have then influenced a third season had it happened.

If it's Utom centered, then I want to see a Yokai identity crisis Yokai my ass, you're just a bunch of mutants. (Isn't the mystic city then just Mutant Town underground?)

So Karai was in the finale right? Do you think they ever intended for her to be in the show or was it a last minute idea given the rushed finale? Cause I'm convinced they never intended for the Foot Recruit to become C.J. but did it because they figured since the show is ending, they were like "eh, screw it."

IndigoErth
09-09-2020, 07:29 PM
I doubt it. Maybe Karai would have shown up more later, but she was technically a ghost of an ancestor and retired back to the spirit world (or whatever) after it was said and done.

Hard to guess if this was a very late idea or not... There was that one hint of ancestor stuff once, but not her.

I find the whole grandma Karai thing a rather weird choice and I'd have rather they made this a different character, but I did like the character though. The ghost of an ancestor showing up sometimes to guide them could have been an interesting concept for the series, but like many things ultimately got wasted.

I sorta think they intended the crazy girl to be Casey, due to the season 2 "Brownies" episode and her as the person behind the Brownie troop and the cookie brand being "Grandma CJ's." But if this was a rather late idea is anyone's guess. If they intended it all along and her being nameless all that time was supposed to be "fun," then they don't know what fun is. (As a woman, a female character not even having a name for all that time is kind of off putting. She was reoccurring enough that she could have mattered more, but mostly she was just some crazy b*tch.)

Well, there's like dead Utroms. But like many things, this show took the pointless route of renaming the mutagen. Assuming it was mutagen...

Like you said, hard to tell if this was a late idea or not. They sure had no qualms with bringing as few familiar characters into this only to radically change them. Seriously, Baxter Stockboy? W-what?! Shredder looks....maybe they should've stuck with Draxum. Though based on what I've watched, none of the new characters interested me, except maybe for the Foot Lieutenant and Brute as well as the idea of origami ninjas. Some have speculated that the brain creature might be Krang as opposed to an Utrom. I'd rather the Utrom, personally.

IndigoErth
09-10-2020, 12:27 PM
If they do show up in the Netflix thing... Knowing this series, they'll axe Krang and the Utroms and rename them/him the Spawn of Cthulhu instead.

I actually kind of wish they stuck with Draxum. At least in some of the minor, skippable eps he's still there as the villain. The Shredder episodes are ultimately so few, what was even the point; they wanted to bring him in as the bigger villain, but they just barely bothered with him.

edit: Sure, season 2 was cut short, but it's not like most of the remaining ones wouldn't have been more of the random one off eps like the first half and the prior season were anyhow. Cutting it short probably did little aside from just cutting those out. Maybe Shredder would have still shown up at a mid season break to shake his fist at the Turtles, but probably then not again until the end we skipped to.

When I saw that link to the twitter page of one of the creators listing episode ideas where Raph and Mike were going to crash Ghostbear's wedding and where Mike's brothers get turned into tots (which was done before in FW), those make me glad they never saw the light of day.:tlol:

As far as the movie goes, I'm curious to see how Raph handles Leo being the leader as I'm sure there will be tension. But also how it will affect Donnie and Mikey as well since they were so used to looking up to their crazy but positive big brother and now that he's no longer in charge, they may never see him the same way. I'm sure Splinter had a reason for changing the team dynamic.
