Mid Series final or Series final, who knows? But I expect this will be very good.
Finale Part 1: E-Turtle Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Turtles must enter Splinter's mind when a powerful foe returns.
Finale Part 2: Shreddy or Not
The turtles find a new ally when they meet Splinter's distant relative.
Finale Part 3: Anatawa Hitorijanai/Finale Part 4: Rise
In a bid to save New York and The Hidden City, the Turtles prepare for their greatest battle yet.

See, it's not without some complaints, esp the nonsense parts that seem to be wasting time when the episodes are this short, but if more of the series had been more like this (maybe without the over-hyper, wtf is even happening, stuff) it might have lasted longer.
So Turtle points go to those who called certain things. Particularly Foot Recruit being Casey and Leo being made leader at literately the vary last second (of course).
Karai as their some hundreds of years old grandmother... odd choice. I liked her as a character, but I think I'd have rather have had her as a character who had been alive and present throughout the series. I kind of like however though that they did give Leo kind of an attachment to her. A bit forced since they'd just met but...
Naturally... April turned over powered by being possessed by her, because why not.
Of course, they failed to also mention that Shredder (or rather, Saki) is therefor also their grandfather, albeit possessed by a demon. Was he voiced by the 2012 Splinter's actor with slight voice alteration?
Nope, Todd didn't turn evil.
I like the family emphasis, but it waited too long to go that deep with it. I know it had been lightly going there over time, but to finally get to that depth with it at the end is sort of a waste.
edit: The Netflix movie was also hinted at.

Foot Recruit being Casey is the one series change I am at least iffy on, although I guess her being Karai would have been too obvious.Wonder what quote I should add to my signature.....

This finale is good if it a bit rushed you can tell that the writers knew they had less episodes that was predicted but it was still a good finale. The show continues to take advantage of its small runtime because the 11 min with Yoshi's backstory has been on of the more heartfelt moments in TMNT history(much better than 12's Tales of the Yokai). The relationship with Karai and the turtles was really adorable and I love how they refer to her as "Gram Gram" and the team fighting Shredder to save her was both stylish and tragic in a why. Draxum's character arc is still one of my favorite things in this series and I do enjoy his journey from the main antagonist of season 1 to not only an ally of season 2 but being part of the family going as far as to call the turtles his sons. April having Karai's spirit was a bit iffy but I say they it was executed well and I love the "Trust you like you Trust us" line. The last episode is just balls to the wall action and I love how we get an upgrade of everyone's powers, Leo teleport like Nightcrawler, Raph can creates Shadow Clones, April has a stand, Mikey has giant chain, and my Boi Donnie using the bigass drill. It all combines into a final team attack where every Hamato past and present finally defeats Shredder. So 8/10 finale I would rank the episodes in order

Sad thing is that she is the second best Casey in the 2010s.
Literally the dumbest complaint I've seen about this show since people bitched about April being black.
Sad thing is that she is the best April of the 2010s.
See, it's not without some complaints, esp the nonsense parts that seem to be wasting time when the episodes are this short, but if more of the series had been more like this (maybe without the over-hyper, wtf is even happening, stuff) it might have lasted longer.
12 wasted even more time but that show lasted for over a 100 episodes so I doubt that's the reason.
[SPOILER]So Turtle points go to those who called certain things. Particularly Foot Recruit being Casey and Leo being made leader at literately the vary last second (of course).

She's literally the only family he's known also all of them had an attachment to her.
Naturally... April turned over powered by being possessed by her, because why not..
You know what "overpowered" means right because I don't know if you didn't notice but almost every character has anime superpowers so its more like having her "powered" its not like in the 12 version where she is the only character with Psychic powers.
I like the family emphasis, but it waited too long to go that deep with it. I know it had been lightly going there over time, but to finally get to that depth with it at the end is sort of a waste.
Umm the family aspect has been here since the beginning of the series and was the reason for Baron Draxum's Heel-Face turn.

I legit laughed for like a minute straight at the end gag. Holy hell.
REALLY solid set of finale episodes. I'm going to miss this show dearly. We kinda got to see what it was like if Studio Trigger did TMNT, & it was glorious.

Does everything still need to be in spoiler quotes? It aired right? Boy am I dissapointed, why you ask? Leo being flipping made leader at the last second with no season three this in my opinion hurts. I mean sure we had little hints here and their of his leadership abilities but would have liked it expanded on in the final. I mean I would have liked an explanation why Splinter felt to switch the leadership role to Leo, that must have been a slap to Raph's after what just happened.
Than Karai keeps getting weird twists and turns, in the 2012 series she was the turtles step sister now she's the turtles granny Boy Nick studios hate Leo x Karai shippers. It started off cute in the 2012 series than got confusing as the series went on.
Last but certainly not least the foot solider being given the name Casey. It would have made more sense if this version was Karai more since she used a sword and fought against Leo the most.
The action was great and so was the animation. It also had a lot of emotion in it, you could tell the staff tried here a lot at least.
Over all it was ok, it some what left a bad taste in my mouth due to how it ended. Had we gotten a third season to expand on things but oh well.

08-08-2020, 02:35 AM
With any luck maybe you'll at least get the leader wish with the Netflix movie instead?
I agree and felt the same way that there was just nothing in these episodes that actually lead up to or explained why Splinter would suddenly make Leo the leader. I really expected that there would be, that something would happen and Leo would step up and show he has what it takes, and was disappointed that it never went there when the "Blue you're the leader" line happened.
Did anyone see Raph's face at that statement? I only caught Leo's reaction.

Thoughts on the finale in full
It was....fine, I honestly expected a lot more, it all felt really really rushed
For example stuff like Karai and Splinters mom and dad came out of absolute nowhere and we had to sit there in a wave of exposition
as usual, animation was stellar, liked the chemistry everyone had with each other, the Turtles treating Karai like a grandma was cute
And I love, love, LOVE the shredder in this series so much
Looking back I just really wish this show got in its main plot a lot earlier and stopped wasting time with Lemmings and Wrestling Matches....jeez Season 1 was rough at first :P
and that ENDING :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
Random thoughts:
Is Casey really a Cassandra nickname? I dont think I heard that before
What was with those Krang/Ultrom(?) Easter Eggs that went nowhere?Cmon gimme the BRAIN
all in all the series was....alright. Let?s wait and see if that movies any good
But no, seriously, what was with the Krang, Iwanthimiwanthimiwanthimiwanthim

I honestly think Nick spent all of their shill/plant budget on the official TMNT FB page. They're workin' overtime, over there! Just deleting all the negative comments probably keeps them busy around the clock. Doubly so with all the "It's for kids, why do you even care" comments dropped in reply to those negative posts, hyper-defensive replies left without irony by ostensibly other grown-ups who I'm sure weren't paid to say that, no sir.
I dare say Nick may finally have given up on this place entirely. I can believe anyone who shows enthusiasm for "Rise" here is sincere, by this point.
I mean, people buy Phish records. People watch golf on TV. People do all kinds'a crazy stuff.

really good final but bit rushed but obviously couldn't be helped as the season was cut short.
Hoon Lee voiced Shredder
Foot recruit is actually a female Casey Jones
Karai and Shredder are Splinter's ancestor loved that the turtles called Karai Gram Gram.
I see a Krang has popped up.
Had some heartbreaking moments
Good fight scenes.

Yeah, race-flipping and gender-flipping is 100% pandering garbage. Shouldn't be tolerated, let alone celebrated.
They made the white chick a black chick and made the dude into a chick... all so that when the show failed, they'd have a card to pull out of their pocket and say "Y'all are just bigoted!"
That's what they call you when you're just plain allergic to dumb ideas. "Bigoted". A tidy little catch-all defense that forever shields you from any and all criticism and makes people dismiss your dissenting opinion by default, because after all, "Who'd side with a bigot?"
The Checklist needs to f*cking go.

Well... First they make Karai Shredder's adopted daughter, then they made her his biological (X-whatever great) granddaughter, then they made her Splinter's biologicial daughter while keeping the Shredder's adopted daughter thing, now we have Shredder as her biological father and her as Splinter's biological grandmother.
Gee, what's next? Making Casey Karai's father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate?

Just finished watching this on Itunes.
Wow, I mean this was exciting.
Tad rushed on some reveals but still, I enjoyed how it all turned out.
Hoon Lee returns now as the Shredder's voice. The irony. But I will say he has a set of pipes on him with all the screaming he did.
Guess my prediction of Foot Recruit being Angel was wrong.
Noticed a lot of Gurren Lagann references, even when Shredder pretty much resembled the Anti-Spiral at the end.
Would have been nice to see a somewhat epilogue of all the characters. Like having Splinter meeting Big Mama one last time. Maybe hugin and munin reuniting with Draxum. Perhaps Foot Recruit (Casey) joins a hockey league and starting a new life.
Also, I got some flashbacks to IDW's "Secret History of the Foot Clan" when they mentioned the Oni pretty much resembled a Utrom that oroku made a deal with.
But I will say this has been a fun ride. Compared to the other three animated series, it's the weakest to me but I still had some fun watching this show.

BUT BRO IT'S SO DIFFERENT! You're just not considering how New and Different it all is because the Different Newness of it all is so overwhelming to you on account of your brain is hardwired against such New and Different things!
It's like you get used to eating steak every night. But one day, you want something different, so instead of steak, you eat fingernails! And it's GREAT, because at least it's f*cking Different, bro!!!
I mean, you never saw any of it it coming, right? Sooooo subversive! Like ordering a pizza and the guy walks up and hits you in the face with a rubber chicken. It's even BETTER than the pizza because bro, you totally were NOT expecting that!
You just don't like change, that's all that is. You're so in love with FW that you can't handle anything that isn't that! That's literally the only reason anyone could ever hate this show, bro. You just miss Bebop. You f*cker.

Thought the finale was absolutely outstanding. It's a real shame Nick (and set-in-their-ways TMNT fans) never gave this show a goddamn chance. Seeing it die like this is painful, but at least it didn't get dragged out past all levels of decent quality like 2012 did imo.
Looking forward to the movie!

How DARE people who like TMNT, not devote themselves wholeheartedly to something that bears only the most passing resemblance at all to "TMNT". If you squint. And then just plain close your eyes and make believe because even squinting doesn't present the illusion that there's anything in common.
I mean, they're drawn totally wrong, and the personalities are all wrong, and everyone's got a totally different and nonsensical backstory, and the white people are black and the dudes are now chicks, and it's really less "TMNT" and more "Bugs Bunny in Greenface"...
BUT aside from ALL THAT it's exactly the same!
Yeah, it's so incredibly weird that people would get so mad that it literally has nothing to do with "TMNT" aside from the name. Why should people get so hung up on petty little things like "literally everything"?

Hey, man, you're totally allowed to not like a thing. I respect if it wasn't for you. That doesn't mean:
a) thing is objectively bad
b) thing should be trashtalked at every possible opportunity and actively petitioned for cancellation by "real fans"
c) people who like it aren't "real" fans
d) thing should immediately go away because you personally don't like it
The TMNT fandom isn't a monolith. There are versions of turtles out there for everyone. I'm sorry this one didn't tickle your fancy but the level of spite and vitriol I've seen thrown at the show was utterly undeserved. Maybe redirect the spite at Nickelodeon who are stuck in the ancient ways of "only one major cartoon at a time and must be for kids only".

Hey, I can get behind this. I've been saying since Day One, I could easily just ignore Rise's entire existence and keep most of my pith to myself if it weren't the thing carrying the "torch" for the entire goddamn franchise.
As its own thing, it's merely a joke, a drunken one night stand to be alternately mortified by and laughing about later on. But as "Keeper of the Flame"? The current "standard" for the brand? Not acceptable.
Put a "real" TMNT show on the air running concurrently, there's no problem at all with Rise existing. "Turtle Tunes" was terrible. "Turtle Tunes" wasn't the ONLY goddamn TMNT product we were "allowed" to have outside of comics that nobody reads, so by default it's not AS "bad" because it was a thing that could easily be ignored. Not so much, here.

*Shrug*
Personally when a variant of TMNT is on that doesn't do it for me, I just go back to the versions that do and let people who do enjoy it get on with it. There's a massive amount of content out there - what can really be considered to be 'carrying the torch' in a franchise with over 30 years of content across so many different mediums?
I also like seeing creators being given scope to play with the concept. I had a lot of fun with those summer shorts Nick put out during 2012's run, for example. There are some talented people out there with great fresh ideas. AUs are pretty much canon in the turtleverse anyway. I do think Rise would have been better accepted as a fixed-length high concept piece on Netflix as opposed to trying to cram it into a traditional cartoon show format on Nick, though.
I still say more fans need to find their Leo zen, though. I get being so interested in turtles that this stuff matters, but I can't get behind the toxic gatekeeping. It's unnecessary. Turtles forever :)

Honestly, with stuff like Batman: Gotham By Gaslight or the Batman Unlimited films, maybe that wouldn't have been such a bad idea.*shrugs*
Leo656
08-08-2020, 09:37 AM
To clarify: By "carrying the torch", I mean "The current mainstream product that for better or worse is representing the TMNT brand to the entire world." The "face" of the franchise at any given time.
For the last couple years, there's been "Rise" and a comic book that only a few people read, and nothing else. That means "Rise" is the brand's "representative" on the global stage. And that's not exactly putting one's best foot forward.
They could and should be putting their resources towards better projects, but as I've said, it's Nickelodeon, anything they do will be blech. So it's whatever, but "Rise" would be a less-bitter pill if people had ANY other options for TMNT media outside of watching the 1990 film for the hundredth time.
It's unfair that the majority are left only with This, That, or Nothing as choices.

Ohh, thank you, I thought I'd caught that but parts of this show are so rushed I really wasn't 100% sure I saw a Krang/an Utrom, as a skeleton, then forgot about it.
Though in that moment that fleeting image and hundreds of years-old great grandma Karai (and Saki) made me feel like they should have made this a new set of Turtles existing in the future. (Dammit, now I want that to be a thing, with Draxum using preserved DNA of a previous TMNT to create this set.)
Who knows, maybe the Krang cameo will turn out to be a hint related to the Netflix movie.
edit: So what exactly happened to all of the Foot members? Am I forgetting a moment where they all defected or were lost? Last I recall them they were seen helping move cargo onto Big Mama's train, right?

Let's see if I can get the timeline straight here:
At some point in the past, probably before humans ever set foot on the American continent, an Utrom dies in Manhattan and Ooze he carried with him leaks out.
The ooze creates the Yokai who build their underground city.
At some later point, another Utrom gives Oroku Saki the Shredder armor and he goes on to commit atrocities.
His daughter Karai goes on to seal him away and her family makes sure he stays sealed.
Hundreds of years pass and Hamato Yoshi becomes a movie star.
Baron Draxum uses the ooze for mutation experiments and abducts Yoshi for this, mutating him and the turtles.
That's it right?

The creators had to rush it as the season was cut to 13 episodes during production. Nickelodeon only gave them a few weeks to get the final done but apparently the writer who wrote the final, did it in one night.
The creators said on Twitter that they had it planned out for 3 seasons, they even said that Karai was going to be in a lot more episodes.
This is one of the creators twitter, https://twitter.com/RCoA he/she been tweeting about the show.
Also don't forget the Netflix movie is coming out next year.
There were other episode ideas too that the creators have said on twitter, one of them was a episode about Mikey and Raph crash Ghostbears wedding. there was also a episode that Leo, Donnie and Raph get turned into toddlers and Mikey becomes a big brother.

Which makes it understandable that it was cut short. Because if this stuff isn't creating enough appeal to bring in much profit, then it's just burning money.

To me, Hoon Lee has been the major highlight of the entire show. He did a great Shredder voice, and might even be my favorite Shredder voice so far.
If anything should survive from Rise, it should be this casting choice.

What's interesting is this version of Oroku Saki started out as a good guy until something took over his body and corrupted him.

*cough* Kind of an unintended metaphor there for this show.

Now I'm wondering if the crew behind the upcoming movie did some major rewrites and changes to the plot. Like will it be different from what they initially intended?

Maybe? Anyone else remember the quotes from a maker of it in articles from last year (from a convention or something?) that claimed the Netflix movie would be sort of a link between seasons? Haven't been able to track down those articles again. But obviously any connection between 1st and 2nd seasons didn't pan out. Perhaps it was intended to connect 2 and 3, had a third happened?
There's still that not-mutagen element they were after in the finale that I guess came from that dead Krang (or from its location), so I'm kind of wondering if those things were/are setting up the movie.

Yeah, the entire "movie" project is clearly just an piece of obligation at this point. They promised it, so they'll make it, but it's going to be completely different in function and purpose than whatever it was originally intended to be.
They'll probably just cram in as many unused elements from the cancelled episodes as possible and try and form a coherent 90-minute narrative out of it. Although anyone who can endure this type of "humor" for a 90-minute stretch is made of sterner stuff than I, that's for sure.

here she is
Oh...I'd seen that but someone said it wasn't actually supposed to be Casey.
This show took some liberties alright.

there was also a episode that Leo, Donnie and Raph get turned into toddlers and Mikey becomes a big brother.
The Fred Wolf cartoon did that first. How more unoriginal can these hacks get?

I really loved the ending. They did a lot in the 39 episodes they had, the 11 minute format helps, I think. But I was surprised how much I cared for the new characters, from Draxum to Big Mama, great to even see Todd. I am hopeful they will continue this in a comic series (like Avatar) as it is a) quicker and cheaper to produce b) could be an easy band-aid for the angry fans.
The show wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but it did work hard to be different and unique, and I think it did a good job of that.
As a toy guy myself, I am forever going to be mad we havent got the majority of the show's characters, but that's life I guess. Happy we got Mayhem early on.
Does Leo become leader in the final episode?

Does Leo become leader in the final episode?
Yup. In the last few seconds of the series. Not kidding.
Splinter just calls him "Blue" again and announces he's leader now. Turtles look shocked. Roll credits.
This did not accompany Leo showing any initiative to step up or any reason for Splinter making that statement.

Welp, it looks like the writers were only given SIX WEEKS (https://mobile.twitter.com/RCoA/status/1292290451056156672) to write the final four episodes.

I haven't watched a single ep of the show! I guess I've been so busy & wrapped up in my own life that I forgot this show was a thing. Still, I hope the next TMNT we get is closer to the roots of the source material

That's a shame. That's an employer though for ya these days, being all vague and just dropping the bomb one day. Even just calling it "paused" despite the fact that the chance of it un-pausing are slim. Probably still want them waiting in the wings just in case, rather than having them all run off and move on from it.
Wonder how long ago this was, how long did they know. Though with the toy line ending it was a bit hard not to see it coming.

I mean, it was a toy commercial. Once there were no more toys to advertise, there's no reason to spend money on the commercial anymore. That's it.
Somewhere right now, TommyT is screaming into a bullhorn how everyone should have listened back in January.

I actually miss him, not gonna lie. While he was vocal, you could tell that he really cares for this brand.

He definitely had lots of good points about many things and was inarguably passionate.
But I feel like I should probably be the absolute limit insofar as smug condescension, talking down to people, and enforcing my will upon others. I mean, I'm always right, but that doesn't mean I don't see how that rubs people the wrong way, and how rubbing peoples' faces in it can be tiresome and off-putting. That's why I try to be as nice as I can about it.
Whereas he often went out of his way to push buttons and make people angry, and yeah, that isn't attractive. I think I agreed with him on a lot more things than I didn't, but he wasn't at all interested in reading the room or getting along with anyone, so sooner or later you're going to hit a wall when you act like that.
Plus, I have some evidence and conjecture that he was yet another duplicate account for a Banned member, and that's also No Bueno. So, it is what it is. I think that's actually why the most recent Ban was so much longer than the previous one. If he'd just gotten Banned for mouthing off to Campbell that'd be one thing, but I *think* the Mods also discovered he was an Alt Account. But don't quote me, I don't know for a fact. Just what I've heard.

Am I forgetting a detail... or just realized that the missing teapot/helmet piece that kept Shredder from being fully sentient in the beginning never mattered. :tconfuse:

Boy, these types of shows treat staff like crap. Same type of thing happened with the original voice actors of Scooby Doo, in the Scoob film they didn't find out that they got replaced till they looked it up online like the rest of us. What is that?
I hope the movie gives us more detail why Splinter replaced Raph with Leo now. I'd like to assume its because of him seeing Leo deal with Big Mom, still. You gotta feel bad for Raph, I looked at that scene and he looks like he's about to fall to pieces.

Man the finale was really good. If the whole show had been like this it would have been consistently fun.
I loved the whole mystic angle in these last eps along with Oroku Saki making a pact with a demon Shredder (even if the whole thing is a ripoff or homage of the Ninja Tribunal arc of the 4kids series), and the action sequences were very well animated.
The backstory and history with Splinter was really nicely done too including Karai and the whole Hamato Clan, and I liked the angle with Oroku Saki himself not being evil before being corrupted. Besides that we saw the Turtles get their classic weapons back (Raph with sai's!), and even April was decent in these last eps. And Foot Recruit is our female Casey of this show, which was a funny way to let us know Casey was here all along.
I don't think it was rushed at all, without the knowledge that season 2 was cut short, I wouldn't think otherwise. Also it ending with Leonardo becoming the leader was pretty funny. I hope this stuff carries over to the movie next year.
Pretty good finale I'd say, I wish the whole show had been more like this.
