View Full Version : So in "A Catwoman from Channel 6," April essentially becomes a catgirl/furry

You know this is something I never thought about as a kid or growing up because the original cartoon pre-dated the internet and all its influence.

But mutated cat April, they essentially turned April into a furry in Season 2 and flew over all our heads:

This episode aired in 1988. Why out of all animals did they choose for her to become mutated into a cat? She essentially became a catgirl, or a furry, in "ancient" times before the internet.

God how did this fly over our heads all these years? I'm just realizing this now almost 30 years after this episode aired.

lolz....

I'd say because cats historically have been associated with femininity... often the darker side. See the Val Lewton horror/thriller classic "The Cat People" (1942). Also, April is defined by being curious (which makes her a successful investigative reporter but usually gets her into trouble), and the old saying "Curiosity killed the cat."

Funny thing about Richard Merwin, is that despite all the insensitive and chauvinistic jokes throughout the episode, the guy is a HUGE liberal on social media from what I've been about to find. Maybe he had a change of heart after he wrote his two TMNT episodes for season 2.

I honestly don't know if "furry" was a thing when this episode came out. The episode itself has lots in common with vintage monster/horror movies, especially vintage werewolf films.

When did the whole furry thing even begin, maybe it wasn't even a thing back then, from my lack of understanding most furries seem to begin with the ones who grew up with anthropomorphic shows in the 80s for the most part.

For my part I'm shocked/baffled that some people seriously think "catgirls and/or furries" only exist thanks to the internet. You can't be serious.

Some people obviously missed Genus Comics (in print since 1993) and like, so much of Ralph Bakshi's career, apparently. :trazz:

But yeah, these are not new and/or shocking developments. Although I don't think they specifically did Catgirl April to appeal to those tastes. On the other hand, wouldn't shock me even a little bit if some of the creators were into it when they came up with it, nor if it made certain young and impressionable audience members feel "some kinda way" that they couldn't explain at the time, which then led them to chase that feeling much later in life.

Anyways, yeah, WTF makes these things pop in your head all of a sudden?

I don't think anyone really knows as records aren't kept for such things, but no, it was around way, WAY longer than that. "Fritz the Cat" was in the 70s if we wanna be loose about the criteria, but even before that there were things that could be considered "furry". Betty Boop was originally a dog, for instance, even though she wasn't drawn as typically "attractive" in the face I would say but even at that stage her "sex appeal" was part of her characterization. It wasn't until AFTER people started saying she was sexy that they made her a human being, so it wouldn't be "weird".

Been a thing for a while. A very, very long while.

Speaking of Fritz the Cat, did you know Robert Crumb used to be sexually attracted to Bugs Bunny? Certainly explains a lot about his comics.

If mutation automatically makes her a furry... then isn't the same true for Splinter? And actually MORE than her because it wasn't temporary? After all, after his chance to be human again didn't last, he made peace with being a rat man and prefers it.

No she does not exhibit any furry behaviour.

A furry by definition is “an enthusiast for animal characters with human characteristics, usually fur covered animals”.

Now Raphael From TMNT IDW comic is a furry for Alopex. They even kissed.

That’s the Episode ‘Rebel without a Fin’, where Ray Fillet or the OT’s equivalent of him was created. A scientist was wanting to create a race of fish people and was wanting explosives planted so the city could fall under the ocean to become a home for his race of fish people. April sees Ray planting explosives and ends up being captured him. The Scientist then mutates April into a fish so she could be Ray’s breeding animal.

Catgirl and fishwoman... Those eps have always reminded me that that's two of the ones I would not want to be, but would have over the years had/have the biggest chance of. >.< lol

A cat is so boring and stereotypical as the go-to for women. (There's your "why," Cubed.) And as much as I love fish as pets and as critters in general...no thank you. April there...egads. And 2012's Fishface just proves the turnout can't get any better.

Ummm... yeah this observation is a twisting of the truth - we see a lot of that nowadays. April was not turned into a furry - not even remotely close.

April was mutated as a story device. She didn't choose to dress up and play pretend as an outlet for a fantasy or fetish.

I just remember loving the episode cause it was a very April-centered episode so we got to check her out for most of it. April on all fours, leaning over all the time. It made for an interesting childhood. I am surprised there is a fanbase for what is essentially a one-episode event, and that people even started drawing cat-versions of the other Aprils.

Would still smash as long as April kept her human composure. In the cartoon she was turning more and more feline and would eventually have lost her mind and human reasoning and pretty much become a human sized cat. That's what made her mutation so different, she was literally becoming the animal she was crossed with, which is why they had to save her ASAP.

Oddly, it seemed the episode's plot was completely the opposite. Everybody (except April) was so sure the effects of the mutation would simply "wear off" given enough time. There wasn't even an attempt by the Turtles to take her back to the warehouse to try and reverse the effects. When she was mutated into the fishwoman and wasp (Season 7), it was clearly stated or shown that her mutation was reversed. In my fan-canon imagination, April still has residual cat-DNA. I was happy to see that concept referenced in recent (https://www.merso-x.com/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-rescue) fan-game projects (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaoTqsiO1uU).

Oh I see. It's been so long I forgot. I don't know how having your DNA mixed with a cat just... goes away... but hey, 80's kids cartoons, am I right?

So I guess it was Shredder's collar that was making her animal side override her human side. He should use that on Bebop and Rocksteady so they can just attack the turtles as feral beasts and not bumbling idiots.

Well, if the series was more adult... it would be funny if April still went 'in heat' as a side effect if she still had residual cat-DNA. It would be interesting since it would conflict with her usual 'married to her job' type persona where she doesn't really pursue men.

Yeah I know that one episode had a throw-away line with April having dated some guy once, but it really feels so out of character for her unless it happened before the series began. You'd think Irma would be twice as jealous of April if she was able to casually date guys whenever while she would always bomb out. I honestly think April would ever date a person (or pretend to) for the sake of a big story. Might not be honest, but to her, her job literally is everything.

Honestly, I think that's one of the reasons 80's April just 'works' as a that cartoon fantasy dream girl. She was eternally single and just happy being that way, so it was way easier for fans to imagine dating her or whatever, where for other characters, you already knew Lois had the hots for Superman, Catwoman wants Batman, etc. And unlike real-world celebs that make their living that way, the cartoon is done. There is no 'April reveals she was actually dating somene the whole time'.

Yeah, I suppose that's one theory. Shredder has a line of dialogue in the episode where he says: "The effects of the molecular crossover will only last a short time, but with that collar, she will obey my every command forever."

I have no idea how that is supposed to work...

Again, my "head-canon" imagination posits that Krang's Matter Transporter has limited effectiveness in that it can only transport things/people for a limited amount of time before it must retrieve them to their original positions. That explains why Shredder was able to recall Bebop and Rocksteady from an unknown (to him) location in the sewers. You might say it's a "rubber band" style of teleportation. Thus, even a malfunction that mixes up the molecules of two different creatures reverts to normal after a short period of time. But maybe Shredder's mind-control collar (which he just happens to have lying around and is never seen again) acts a stopgap with prevents the "rubber band" effect from kicking things back to normal. That's the best I can figure.

As for the collar, I like to think it was one of the last inventions Baxter Stockman was working on before he got turned into a fly. The fact that it ha a remote control companion is similar to the technology Baxter used to control the Pizza Monsters in an earlier episode.

The episode also had an abandoned subplot of the alley cat that got zapped along with April taking on elements of April's personality (though not changing in physical appearance).

April's cat mutation was a more significant continuity moment for her character in the Japanese market. The "Mutations" toys (1993-1994) were actually the first 11 numbered TMNT figures released to individual retail in Japan, with the exception of the Mutatin' April figure, which was not numbered as part of the series, but it was available as a Fan Club exclusive.

I can't find any confirmation as to what other April action figures were released in Japan as part of the classic line, so that figure was featured heavily in promotional materials, and it was likely to be the only April figure that Japanese fans had opportunity to acquire.

Whatever was being implied in the initial post is apparently way over my head currently. So she's an anthro, and these days that's a fetish for those we now call furries. I mean, isn't basically any anthro subject to being considered furry material? If someone wants to, they can be sexually obsessed with Muckman. That doesn't mean the cartoon was somehow subversively sneaking in something lewd by featuring Muckman. This whole notion strikes me as reverse logic. It's like when millenials are amused by finding the word "smash" used outside of a sexual context, as if the word has always secretly meant that and only they realize it. I don't even get how her being a cat, specifically, is somehow more fur-fetish? :trolleye:

If we're stickin' to cartoons, I'd invite 2003 April to the party. Not gonna lie, I'm a sucker for a chick in a belly shirt. :tgrin:

That's it, though. Just them two Cartoon Aprils. After that, well, Y'know what they say... "15'll get you 20.":lol::lol:

Makes you wonder if they just made her younger in more recent incarnations primarily to try and discourage people objectifying her character. Since it happens so frequently with FW and 2003 April.

Probably... but then for some weird reason the 2012 show really focused a lot on April's butt considering they made her younger. My ex used to say 'it was probably to give the kids a rise', which is funny cause even when I was a kid, I was still oogling full grown adult April. I remember there was some article made out there saying 'Stop sexualizing 2012 April', so there's that too. So weird.

IDK, the funny part about my grade school years, is even back then, kids don't like kids. The same guys that would call their female classmates 'yucky' and pick on them, would be the same kids talking bout what they would do to Cindy Crawford.

Naw my Aprils would have been the 80's version, 2003 version, 2004 movie April, Megan Fox April (would be hard not to slip and call her Megan a few times though), Mirage April and IDW April.

Yeah and the sad part is, 2012 April had no junk in the truck .

The close ups were bad, but than the groping happen from that worm giving April a nice butt rubbed with a perverted smile on it's face, to the body switch of April and Casey and Casey giving April a butt pitch.

Given her age, it probably woulda been weirder/creepier if she did have junk in the trunk. lmao. Every time I see the 'captured by Baxter' scene, I remember it's a team of ADULT animators that decided to have April bent way over and zoomed in towards the camera, and whoever is in charge of the show or sees the final cut or whatever gave that the thumbs up.

Maybe he read one of recent (https://onezero.medium.com/stop-sending-reaction-gifs-of-black-people-if-youre-not-black-b1b200244924) opinion (https://www.wired.com/story/tiktok-evolution-digital-blackface/) articles (https://guides.library.illinois.edu/socialmediaaccessibility/digitalblackface) on digital sensitivity, and had a change of heart.

Anyhoo, here's a thread-specific substitute:

I agree the Nick series made some "curious" decisions on directing April's CG model.

I see why the 80's turtle show made some what of of a deal of April's chest and butt. We had some nice close up shots in that show, April had everything. You are right, it may of been weirder had 2012 April had a big butt, but I really see no need to make a big deal of it IN show because she got non. What was the point of that zoomed in close up of April? There was nothing to show lol. We ended up with a REALLY awkward scene. The worm scene, AWKWARD. At least they should of made April 18 or so so it would not seem creepy when April got the butt close ups and well got grope. To this day, I still don't understand how they got away with April getting grope. Must of been the same guy that gave the thumbs up to that final cut.

Fun episode.

April as a catgirl did looked cute.

But mutated Selina Kyle in the Tyger Tyger episode of Batman TAS was way hotter than mutated April, at least Selina was nude. Selina is lovely no matter how she looks.

Well said here. Exactly. It's a loaded nonsense thread that presumes or inserts intent and leaves no way out but to accept the phony premise being asserted. It's like in a college classroom there's always that asshole that does that in discussion and the rest of the class just stays away and one or two people look at the guy who made the statement and just say tersely "No" and then walks away.

Pffft. Maybe someone was into transformation stuff.

And furries aren't new. I think the concept has existed since at least the 80s. And talking animal people have existed decades and decades before that, but I think the coining of the term furries happened in the 80s.

8aF2GxWi7Ag It's very true that catwoman April most likely has no hidden intent. But to say that "furries" didn't exist back then is incorrect. So there is at least a 1% chance someone on the staff was into furry cat women. Furries were a thing long before Catwoman April was created.

But seriously the only way you're going to get people to not sexualize April is by turning her into an old woman. April could be 6 years old and unfortunately a small army of sickos would still draw porn of her.

I want 50+ April for next incarnation, April was badass in SAINW, it would be a nice change. no more teen april unless her adventures are set in high school.

Yeah, she has those cat-eye glasses and even a cat-phone in the show. I figured they probably would have done an homage episode if Rise had gone on a little longer.

And this mutation of April, started a trend for her in future season of the OG TMNT Cartoon, as others have said. And it wouldn't be till the final season "Back to the Sewer" of the 2K3 TMNT, that we would get another April Mutation/Transformation.
