Oh Mortimer, do you think your owner ever found a new job after being fired from Channel 6?

https://turtlepedia.fandom.com/wiki/Blodgett

Vernon was so mean to him and he seemed like such a nice guy trying to make a living in his early 30's. :(

Yeah, I always wondered what happened to the poor loser. Not a bad guy, but I'm not sure he was competent at anything.

He did get his job back according to the epilogue of "Curse of the Evil Eye," even with a pay deduction. But I like to think he quickly moved on to some other career that was more in line with his interests or talents (assuming he had any). Hopefully, he was able to net a bundle selling off his comic book collection....

For as huge a story building as the Channel 6 building was, I'm surprised we only know about less than 10 people who actually work there. There's also the older somewhat heavy set guy with the yellow mustache who reported the news in a few episodes.

Did they not have insurance on that news van?

Has anyone counted the number of Channel 6 news vans crashed throughout the series?

All these threads are making me wanna rewatch the OT in order. Been a while since I did it that way. Maybe I'll force my partner to sit through it with me this time. :tlol:

I marathon the show at least once every 2-3 years. It's funny how many things you can catch in the episodes you never noticed before, even if you've already watched them hundreds of times.

Has anyone counted the number of Channel 6 news vans crashed throughout the series? Not to mention all the satellites and other news equipment destroyed throughout the series. Explains why Burne was so steamed, having to pay off bills (though maybe not with his own funds) from stories involving the turtles.

The real question is how did Vernon have the power to fire anyone? If so, he could've used that power over April at some point. Or.... maybe Vernon got demoted because of this?

That always bugged me too. Its just the four that we see and a few extras, but none of them have names. When Splinter freed the payroll of Channel Six News in 'Get Shredder' its was like 8 individuals. Also, at one point the station boss had his son intern and Burn wanted to treat him well to impress the father. However, later it seems that Burne as the station manager bought the station. So the number of employees and ownership is never clear. I know its just a cartoon, but these are details I would like to have seen.

Vernon and April were probably on equal terms up the ladder. Blodgett was probably still an intern or a newbie. It's odd but I guess April would have had the authority to fire him too, but she's too nice.

That makes sense. She and the Turtles did agree that he would have to pay for the cost of a new van at the end. Or maybe the Turtles were annoyed because Blodgett wasn\t originally going to order pizza.

More importantly, I wonder why Vernon had the authority to fire him. Vernon would also attempt to fire Bebop and Rocksteady in the first season 4 episode.

Vernon wasn't anyone's superior and even if he was, wouldn't Burne be the only person on Channel 6 with the authority to fire people?

Bingo!! I can understand why he might have that authority in Season 2, and his jealousy antics probably got him demoted. That scene in Plan Six was probably just him frustrated. Burne, on the other hand, was just insane in that scene. Having the news earlier won't scoop the other stations...

Don't some companies have a hierarchy where some people a few steps down from the big boss himself still have authority to fire people? Like obviously Burne was the top dog but Vernon (at least for that one episode or so) was second or third on the power scale.

Again, other than April being a reporter and Burne being the boss, everyone else isn't clearly defined. Like Irma would sometimes be the secretary and other times be the camerawoman. How does that work?

I'm assuming they needed someone to fire Blodgett to keep the story moving, and rather than create yet another whole new character it had to be either Vernon or April that would fire him. We can't have April look like the asshole, so Vernon it is.

Yes, like you mentioned, the hierarchy and the roles in Channel 6 were never well defined besides April and Burne.

Vernon was always a cameraman at first but then we'd see him covering stories as well as presenting the news. How he got the authority to fire Blodgett was strange... but probably just for plot convenience.

Channel 6 was also a skyscraper with like 10 floors and through the entire run of the show we knew like less than 8 people who actually worked there.

You know I forgot that was the building for like, all of Channel 6 and not just the news. Like all Burne cared about was the news and we very rarely see them refer to other shows other than that one with Bebop and Rocksteady working there (in which Vernon fired them). Like Channel 6 news was make or break for all of Channel 6 it felt like. Is that how it works in real life? Like does ABC only care about their news above all their shows and movies and stuff.

I think Vernon did get demoted some time during season 4. I watched several marathons of the entire show in episode order and as I did, I noticed Vernon was bossing people around a lot in the earlier episodes, over time that slowly disappeared and I barely noticed. If you remember in The Dimension X Story, Burne was not happy with how Vernon did his job and told him something like he never wants him to use a camera again. And in a later episode , I think The Big Zipp Attack, Burne told him he’s lucky he still has a job.

With that said, I think it does make sense Vernon was allowed to fire Blodgett.

Since he was a fan of comic books I'd like to think he pursued that as a career path. He was basically a replacement for Kirby in a story very loosely inspired by Donatello #1 so it stands to reason he might also want to be a comic artist.

Vernon was pretty incompetent as a reporter. He did OK as a cameraman.

Vernon was also a big ass kisser. Burne did prefer Vernon in the sense of Vernon being a yes man, while April was more likely to go against him, but he deep down knew April was a much more capable reporter. Hence why he kept her around for so long.

Also, in the 2nd episode of the series, Burne is asking Vernon where April is and he calls her his 2nd best reporter. Vernon denies that statement and then Burne says "well 3rd best, maybe"

...the question is, who could possibly be above April?!

Actually that was the first episode, not the second. And being above April, probably the guy who interviewed Bebop and Rocksteady in Plan 6, or that other news reporter I don’t think he has a name, I’m talking about the guy at the beginning of Wrath of the Rat King who announced their turtle tip line.

I remember a couple of unnamed reporters: an older guy and a blond guy. I guess it's one of those. But eventually April must have gotten the number 1 spot with all her stories on Shredder and the Turtles.

The Channel 6 news crew had some of the deepest lore in the show.

I guess it's understandable why some things were left unexplained about the Channel 6 crew. The show is about the Turtles, after all.

If anything, they should have focused more on the loophole of Shredder's backstory and how he met Krang.

According to Splinter in the 1st episode, Shredder had turned the Foot Clan in Japan into an army of crime. That makes me wonder if they were able to take over Japan or something. But it's never explained or mentioned afterwards. By the time the show began, the Foot Clan was what? Shredder and a bunch of robotic foot soldiers? Why did Splinter and the Turtles need to keep those documents to prove Splinter was the rightful leader in that season 3 episode anymore?

I wonder if in the 1987 show Bernon Thompson has a black sister named Bernadette.
