Can TMNT survive the times?

We're entering into the times where the old school fans are now raising the new school. So far the new TMNT are kicking shell and taking names. But we know somewhere down the line that might not be the case. Would you believe that the TMNT could make it pass what most comic/cartoon characters do?

I believe so. I mean given that the TMNT are this strong...they have a good chance of lasting past a year or more. As adults I think that we see the TMNT has something more grounded in the world than the X-men or even the Fantastic Four. Martial Arts out weigh the super humans who are a dime a dozen anymore.

Good n bad times...if you're a true fan you care lesa about the incarnation and care about the serial for what you it for since the beninning...itself.

And I stay true to that...even when i watch my old eighties shows;) love for the serial is stronger than critics or criticism.

I think it'll go on for at least another year or 2. That seems to be what happens with kids stuff now; it starts kinda big, gets huge, declines a bit, then smashes to the ground. Naturally there will always be fans, it just won't get huge again for a while.

Or, maybe it'll do what X-Men's managed to do and get reborn every few years.

As long as they keep making good cartoon episodes, and make a few improvements on the toyline (more ball joints, please), it should go pretty well for quite a while.

Just enjoy it while it's here again :D .

I do agree with Gwgtrunks, I've also found that japanese shows dominate these days... Dragon Ball Z, Yugioh (can't spell that garbage), Beyblade, Pokemon...

What's sad is that kids are more amused with spinning tops with metal edges, or with cards that fight each other more than turtles with real weapons, real martial arts and interesting characters. To be honest the characters in TMNT are very deep and interesting I must say. I can see why DBZ did so well, because it's these buff guys seriously getting their asses rocked and all these cool moves and flashing beams... but the rest is utter garbage.

I don't see why the Turtles can't survive longer than just a couple of years. After all, they've been around for twenty years in one form or another. Sure, there was a dry spell between TNM and Volume 4 of the Mirage comics, but the TMNT came back, didn't they? The turtles only disappeared for about four years during their entire run. That's a lot better when compared to other franchises that haven't had anything new in a very long, long, time (For example, the Jetsons). I'm certain that the Turtles have made their mark as a part of Americana, and they even became a world-wide phenomena (just take a look at all of our international members). I think they'll always return in one form or another. Just like other classic characters, such as Batman, the X-Men, Spider-Man, Scooby Doo, etc. Here's lookin' forward to another twenty years of turtles. :)

Azure I have to agree. TMNT are the only one of their kind quite literally and truth be told. they will last forever if we fans have anything to say about it ;)

I pretty much said the samething Azure Turtle just said in a similiar post quite sometime ago. The Turtles will always be around in some form or another. There are tons of fans all around the world clamoring for more of there hardshell heroes. A perfect example of this is the fact that the otherday i went to a dealer guy i know and he was talking with a japanese collector. This guy bought a ton of TMNT from him to bring back to Japan for the collectors over there. Diehard fans all around the world equals TMNT forever.

The thing about TMNT is that it is a very simple concept when you dig right down to the core of it. And that is what makes it so attractive, memorable, even "catchy". Of course, there are other good things about the show, but the simple premise of turtles fighting Shredder in one way or another, is enough to make fans of all of us.
Just look at all these other superficial cartoon shows, like YuGiOh - at the core of that concept is complete and utter crap. That show was created by "down your throat" business tactics, with the sole purpose of addicting kids to it and to make money. And that's why no matter how many superficial layers are piled on top of that to make it look nice, it's still crap no matter what. And that's why it's not going to be around for too long.
Anyway, that was a bit of a rant, but I hope I somewhat illustrated my point on the differences between what makes a good show and a bad show.

Can TMNT survive the times? Short answer: Yes.

Their "survival" is determined not on how much shelf space is dedicated to their action figures, but rather on us. As long as there are people like us to carry the stories, they will survive. What we need to be sure of is that we pass on the stories to the next generation and make sure they understand how important it is for them to also pass on those stories. And I have no doubts that that will happen.

To anyone who hates the Yugioh anime, I want to say I hate it too, but check out the original manga. They're NOTHING alike!

Anyway, I think it'll last another good long time. And 2000 was the only year since 1984 without a TMNT product. (The Image series ran until 1999 and Volume 4 started in 2001)

Woah! I always thought from 1998 to 2000 there were no TMNT Products. For some reason I never considered the Image comics even though I have some.

I hope this new Turtles' cartoon and merchandise lasts at least 5 years. I hope it outruns the old Turtles' run. It means more episodes to watch and toys to collect. I did read in some interview, (maybe it was with Peter Laird), this new show has potential to outrun the old show. I sure hope it does.

The old show lasted from 1988 to 1996 I believe. Then in 1997 The Next Mutation came out. So the new show only has to go 7 more years to tie the old show.

I hope the true fans keep a steady support for the turtles and the kids will boost the ratings. Kids like the next hottest thing, so I think its really important for the turtles to keep mainstream, and popular. Its great animation and good story, but I think it all comes down to advertising.
I get excited if I see a cardboard cut out of them in the game section in the video store, or if the figures are on a spotlight display in the toy store. But I dont know any kids to ask their opinion of the turtles. Do any of you have litte relatives? What do they think?

I also think they should sell comic books in toy stores, it couldnt hurt! :D

I have a cousin that I pick up from school everyday. He is 8 years old now, I think. He tries to be cool with all the kids at school and continue his Yu-Gi-Oh charade, but when he gets to my house he's all about the Turtles. He plays the PS2 game right away, then whips out all the new toys, and I have all of them in doubles except for the 4 new fightin' gear turtles. I actually think a lot of kids have been stuck with Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon, and they're just not ready to admit that they want to let it go. My cousin doesn't really like Yu-Gi-Oh at all. It's sad that he tries to fit in, but for Christmas he is requesting Turtles merchandise and nothing else.

I had religiously travelled to every department store in Milwaukee to find the new Turtles and it seems like younger kids (7 and under) are more attracted to the new TMNT than anyone else. I see 5 year old kids screaming and crying for Turtles all the time. I thinks it's because they haven't been infiltrated with the other crap yet. They won't be either, as long as the Turtles continue to stay alive. The shelves are empty at both Targets and Wal-Marts. Target even had some kind of letter posted where the turtles were once hung (they were sold out completely) that customers cannot make requests for employees to search the warehouses for new shipments, and that you can actually reserve turtles figures!! I've also seen parents with carts full of turtles stuff. Some kids out there are going to be really pleased with Christmas this year.
