Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Next Chapter: ViacomCBS Applies to Register Trademark for New TMNT Project (http://nickalive.blogspot.com/2020/12/viacomcbs-applies-to-register-trademark.html)

From the article:

ViacomCBS is filing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Next Chapter under "entertainment services in the nature of continuing program series, featuring animation, comedy and drama provided through cable television, broadcast television, internet, video-on-demand, and through other forms of transmission media; providing online information in the field of entertainment concerning television programs," which suggests that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Next Chapter will be a new TMNT series, rather than the recently announced CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theatrical movie Nickelodeon Animation is currently producing with Point Grey Pictures - although it could be a series based on the movie. It's also not thought to be related to Netflix's Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, expected to premiere next year.

It's also currently unknown which platform the new TMNT series is being produced for: Nickelodeon (linear and digital) or streamers such as CBS All Access/Paramount+ and Netflix.

ViacomCBS filed their application to trademark Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Next Chapter on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, as has the serial number 90367277.

It’s a very creative name. Early thoughts is that it’s a continuation of something (duh!). Potentially the 2012 show, but all three shows have got a decent finale (no idea on Rise). Could this be the live action show in the movie universe that was rumoured a few years back?

I think the fact they registered a trademark is pretty big.

Nothing concrete yet, but it's indicative they will continue the franchise very soon.

"Next Chapter" does imply this is a continuation of some kind.

"Next Chapter" really does sound odd if this is an all-new series.

Maybe the 2012 Nick show is coming back? If not, it's not a name I would use for a new continuity.

Yeah, exactly.

There were rumors that they wanted to do a 1990 movie continuation a while ago, wasn't there? What if this is connected to that?

Given this sounds like a TV series I don't think anything from the older movies will be continued. And of course the original cartoon and 2k3 series are unlikely to receive a new series (even with all the OT Turtles crossovers over the years).

If it isn't a new continuity there's really nothing else I could imagine it being the next chapter of but a few things. We know Rise is already getting a movie to wrap it up too.

That would be, "TMNT: The Next Generation."

This title reminds me of Dragonball Super, which was an official continuation of DBZ. I think the early press-releases for the Beerus movie referred to it as the next chapter.

Not sure I want to pay too much attention, I'll wait until something is not only announced but also confirmed as in progress.

Just speaking in speculation the Next Chapter could be one of the former toons set later on on or a whole new toon just set with them older, after the stories we already know. So far as existing shows...I mean, it says not likely to be Rise but I suppose if it were that it could even be the next part for all we know, post the 'Rise' aspect. I dunno, it also speculates this might be instead of the new movie, that would be two movie threads we pointlessly have if that were the case. All just more speculation. Think I'll go back to reading Mirage and revisiting what I like.

Yeah, same here.

I think there's three possibilties:

1) It is the 'Next Chapter' of a pre-existing cartoon. Most likely 2012, but could also be 1987 or 2003, though I'd doubt it.

2) It is something where they are older, as someone else said, and set after their previous adventures (but also not related to one of the aforementioned cartoons, more like the adventures are informed). Maybe a more mature take on the franchise. I doubt it because kids and fans would probably prefer them being teenage mutants who fight Shredder, et al.

3) It is going to be something entirely new, they just use 'Next Chapter' as a cutesy tagline.

I don't really see that as too likely. Despite multiple crossovers the show itself coming back is a huge undertaking, and the VA's for the original Turtles are pretty old now and besides maybe Rob Paulsen and Cam Clarke probably wouldn't work on a new series full time.

As seen with Nick's shows with 2012 and Rise, they clearly want to create their own universes rather than continuing the original cartoon.

IF it's a continuation of something old, the 2012 show is all I can see being revisited. And even then that's a big if. Technically when we hit 2022 the show will be in its 10th anniversary, so all the kids who grew up with it will have nostalgia for it.

Many companies file trademarks to protect their IP so could just be a case of that since the source of the site seems to be legitimate.

Do sites typically report on trademarks? I know some Star Wars sites used to do that in past thinking it would be the name of a new movie but that’s all I’ve ever seen.

This seems legit if you look at the other trademarks for Viacom. All for future television shows some of which have been announced officially after they were registered.

"The Next Chapter" implies continuation. If this was a reboot it would be "The First Chapter" or "The Beginning."

I don't think Nick really wants to take another risk on another new TMNT cartoon after Rise didn't do well at all, so makes me think they want to revisit something that was successful. The only thing that comes to mind realistically is some sort of continuation of the 2012 series, but I don't know for sure.

The original cartoon won't get a new series (although more crossovers is likely), 2k3 won't be revisited, the old 90's movies are done, Mirage/Archie/IDW are comics so it wouldn't involve those...all that's left is 2012 and Rise...and Rise just ended so...

sdp
12-14-2020, 01:33 PM
Yeah it seems to be legitimate that they trademarked it, and yeah some sites do report on trademarks but it's not common since it usually leads to nothing, it's common for companies to register trademarks they have no intention of ever doing anything with them. I just wouldn't get excited, I can't remember a time when a trademark registration actually leaked something that happened.

I guess the soonest we could see something would be at Toyfair 2021 or however that's going to happen, if not then SDCC 2021. But honestly I think TMNT is on hiatus for the next couple of years. Which I'm ok with.

The Next Mutation was billed and advertised as "what happens next for the TMNT" despite being a new continuity and not being specifically based as a sequel. I remember the ads of "now they're grown up" or "they aren't teenagers any more".

Very interesting, look forward to seeing more clues about what this might be.

Not sure what to think with that title. Sounds like a continuation as been mentioned, though on the other hand it could be a loosely generic, for lack of a better word, continuation based on the main TMNT concept that is just "next" because it delves into the adventures of a TMNT who have grown up. If an original series of its own, great. If a literal "next chapter" for 2012 with older TMNT, that's cool too, because that's what I'd been really wanting back when that one was ending. If it was a (decent) return of 2003 Turtles, I'd be ecstatic.

Making Rise and going younger didn't seem like that great of an idea from the get-go, and the exact opposite of what I had hoped for... and maybe they've finally did a 180 in that direction, realizing after all that the big money is with the fans who have an income.

Hope it's on tv, but if it ends up on streaming instead then I really hope it's available across a few of the most common services.

Though that title mostly made me think of Next Mutation. I hope not.

edit: The only thing that makes me doubt the possibly of 2012 continuation is because of the direction they took it. I know it was suggested that the Mutant Apocalypse episodes are just a possible figure and they have plenty of life left to tell about before those years, however it's hard to get past the part about the mutagen bomb that clearly happened while they were still young and split them up until they were reunited decades later in the Apocalypse eps.

More edit: Looked up the trademark search to see for myself that it's on there. Yup. Now will it happen or be something that falls through.... time will tell.

Yeah, if this is the next chapter, what was the last chapter?

Nothing good, I'd wager. Best case scenario of all the options I think they'd go for is maybe a "jump forward" continuation of the 2012 universe... but it probably won't be that. Probably some kind of murky Fred Wolf: The Next Generation, as others have surmised.

I dunno. The fact that it's still called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gives me the impression the characters will still be teenagers. Sure, Laird kept the title in Vol.4 when the characters were in their thirties but I can't imagine Nickelodeon doing that.

Maybe they are in their late teens and the show takes place after they'be defeated Shredder and the Foot and most of their major foes have been vanquished and there is a greater emphasis on new threats...although that was basically most of the Tales of the TMNT season of the 2012 show.

AquaParade
12-14-2020, 03:58 PM
I don't imagine this as a continuation of the original cartoon. There is nowhere to go and that brand of TMNT seems to serve it's purpose as a merchandising juggernaut among a certain demographic, without them propelling it.
It's not like there is a secret TMNT sauce there, it's just nostalgia.

"The Next Chapter", in my mind, implies a desire to move on past the typical origin and Foot clan story we have gone through so many times. "Rise..." attempted to circumvent this by taking place before all those shenanigans, which also allowed them to keep the turtles young. I have to wonder if they're going to try the opposite move this time, if this is indeed a cartoon, which we know they've been working on.

Still, it's hard not to notice the timing of this coinciding with massive "The Last Ronin" sales. It's nice to imagine they've finally green-lit something for older fans.

Y'know, it would be a bizarre choice but I wouldn't 100% rule out it being a reworked continuation of "Rise", picking up where it left off and so on.

I mean, thematically it would fit. We're done with the "Rise" and now on to "The Next Chapter".

I think odds are slim of that, truthfully, but I wouldn't 100% rule it out either. People did supposedly petition for a continuation/revival and stranger things have happened.

AquaParade
12-14-2020, 04:17 PM
I could see that. It seems odd for them to move on with a series that by all accounts seems to have failed, but thematically it kind of makes sense and there is the movie on the way.

Maybe it seemed wiser to restructure the current show than start from scratch.

Andrew NDB
12-14-2020, 04:21 PM
I don't think there would be a "The Next Chapter" if "Rise" had enjoyed a big success... so I think it's unlikely they'd throw good money after bad in that way, if the opposite.

My first thought is its the title of the Rise wrap up that is the straight to Netflix film. A place is already made for it on Netflix so it would fit. The series was not popular so a full on sequel series would not be wise after it was wrapped up quickly and quietly after a premature renewal. A full on series is hard to believe.

Not really, could be just as vague as something as The Next chapter of the franchise, with Rise being the previous chapter.

It's kind of like how Ultraman a few years ago had gotten two trademarks as both were called "Ultraman for kids" and "Ultraman for adults." And all that turned out was Ultraman Orb and Ultraman Orb Origins which was an Amazon Prime exclusive.

What you think that’s a bad idea?

Portraying them in adulthood would make for interesting storylines. Shredder could be defeated and they have to deal with new threats. I know they already fight various other villains but the point is them growing up.

Maybe even reveal themselves in order to be part of society. I don’t think they’d want to live in the sewers or hidden forever.

Since the DVD distribution rights are at Lionsgate and not Nick, I’m not sure if Nick have full ownership rights, hence why official products (t-shirts etc) have different images/artstyle of the characters compared to the show itself

It's most likely a continuation of a previous TMNT iteration or an all-new show/reboot... but I'd like to think they want to do a show that takes the TMNT into the future, this is what other properties have done, some more successful than others, and allows them to move forward and tell different kinds of stories rather than yet again rehash the same tmnt stuff we've experienced many times over.

Why not a show set 30 years later (with the OG turtles having been 'teens' in the late 80s/early 90s) where we somehow have a new group of turtles (how this happens, your theory is as good as mine)

I know, many would find this idea repulsive, but many properties have done it with success. It can be a good way to mix the old with the new and please both sides of the fanbase if they do it well!

Fun fact: In the finale of the Nick series, during the flashbacks when they showed the Mutagen Bomb go off, it was already a timeskip showing the Turtles around 20 if I remember right (granted I could be off a little, its been awhile since I've seen it), and that's when the apocalypse happens.

It's quite possible it could be the 2012 Turtles around 18-20 or so, and involve some time travel shennanigans where one of the Turtles from the future (I assume bearded Raph since he was the main of that arc), comes back in time to prevent the mutagen bomb from going off and saving the future.

Depends on the age. The show started in 2012. If they were 7-8 years old in 2012, they would be 17-18 in 2022.

I was 17 years old when the 2k3 series started in 2003. At that time our generation was highly nostalgic for the TMNT franchise due to the original cartoon, movies, toys, etc. It's about at the right time.

Rise fans on Twitter are super obnoxious. as someone who follows the official TMNT Twitter page they hijack every TMNT post even if it has nothing to do with Rise. One time they got really pissy on one post that was an anniversary post for 2012 but they didn't do one for rise.

This is true of every fanbase unfortunately. The Netflix accounts get bombarded constantly by multiple fanbases of shows that have been cancelled on every single post they make. Social media sucks.

Heh.

Not really. Rise Of fans are the ones who stir up trouble first, even worse than any other fans of TMNT stuff including the Platinum Dune movies, Next Mutation, 2012, 1987, etc etc.

I've had many of them call me a bigot because I dislike the show because "obviously" I hate it because April is black, even though I've never mentioned I had any sort of issue with April's skin color (or even April specifically, my issues are more with the rest of the cast).

This was true for me as well. I was 5 when the 2003 show started and I was 8 when season 4 ended in 2006 which is when I enjoyed it most. I remember Fast Forward but I'm not sure if I made it a priority to see every episode. I can't really remember Back to the Sewers but I must have watched it so I would have been 12 when the entire show finished.

I started watching the 2012 show in 2014 (just so happened to be the 30 year anniversary) when I happened to see the Mousers Attack! episode when I would have been 16. I was immediately hooked. I didn't think that I'd like it but I was pleasantly surprised.

Heh.

Not really. Rise Of fans are the ones who stir up trouble first, even worse than any other fans of TMNT stuff including the Platinum Dune movies, Next Mutation, 2012, 1987, etc etc.

I have to agree and this is coming from someone who actually ended up enjoying the Rise show. I mainly see fans bashing the other shows. Likewise, I've never seen that with Platinum Dune (movies which I have no time for), 1987 fans, etc.

There is such obvious bias in some posts. For example one analysis of martial arts in each of the series is that the 1987 show is slapstick, 2003 rigidly adheres to realistic martial arts at all times (putting a negative spin on it), 2012 is a mixed bag with an attempt at realistic martial arts and traditional ninja techniques but are done poorly while Rise mixes real martial arts with over the top anime fighting and 70s/80s martial arts films with the conclusion that Rise is the most ninja out of all the series. What bothers me about that is that 2003 having realistic martial arts is presented as a negative yet Rise has the most ninja fighting style.

I've seen lots of examples of this. A lack of character developement is a criticism that I've seen before but I haven't seen any examples of how Rise did better. Splinter 2012 is called a jerk... when Rise Splinter was definitely a jerk in different situations.

There's zero proof of that, just like there's minimal proof that "kids" even still pay attention to TMNT in any large numbers since a few years ago already. But once upon a time some soccer mommy complained that we're all a bunch of heathens and thus we have to have a swear filter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the TMNT 2007 movie basically a "next chapter" of Turtles? It didn't connect to a specific universe, but it was made clear that the turtles had shredded the Shredder, toppled tricertons, mixed it up with some mousers, and the whole Casey/April relationship was far enough along to make me think this was well into the turtle's lives, without having to be tied to a specific "turtlesverse". Maybe that's what this new toon will do?

My spouse made that exact observation. He thinks it will be a 'Next Chapter' in the way TMNT 2007 was.

Though people did not really warm up to that approach. I still remember most of the reviews being people complaining there was no Shredder, Kraang, Bebop, Rocksteady, etc.

Which is why it does feel like this title implies a continuation of a past continuity, but as I said before, nothing really make sense for Nick to revisit in a TV series other than possibly the 2012 cartoon. I wonder if it's because after Rise didn't catch on with kids, the toys bombed, and the show got canceled after a season and a half (remember the second season even had its episode order reduced to 13 eps instead of 26), it "scared" Nick into realizing they can't take risks on the property. Since they already know the 2012 series was very successful, it's a "safe" bet if they want to revive it.

Only other possibility is some kind of revival for the original cartoon, but that's too much a stretch for me. While all the voice actors are available I can't see them making a whole series, and Nick seems to want to create their own incarnations of the Turtles.

Also Nick is batting 2 for 4 so far. Out of the new incarnations since the Viacom sale, only two were success and two were not:

IDW and Nick 2012 series = success, IDW is still going

Platinum Dunes Movies and Rise = failed, the movies bombed and were canceled in favor of a new reboot, and Rise of course ended early.

Roseangelo

Nick doesn't have anything to do with the IDW series being good, so I wouldn't give them that credit. They gave someone permission to make comics and we are damn lucky the right people got involved.

I can handle Rise being meh, but I can't forgive Nick at all for how terrible those movies were.

Zachatello00

Which is a sad thing, really. I mean, do we really want reboots of the same thing every few years? Eventually we're going to have to get comfortable with the idea of something new or this thing is going to get stale quickly.

Having said that, I'm not sure that I think "Rise" was the best route to go. I'd rather see stories push the characters to new heights as opposed to just tweaking characters and making arbitrary changes for change's sake.

That's part of what made TMNT 2k7 so much fun for me. I know it wasn't the most widely enjoyed film, but I thought it was neat to see how the turtles had "moved on" from their childhood, but how they could still be "brought back together" when the situation called for it.

It reminds me of when I, as an adult, go home for Thanksgiving or something. On the one hand, I'm adult with children of my own now and I play a very different role in my family. On the other hand, it's funny how quickly I slide back into the role I played when I was growing up.

At the end of the day, I suppose what's most important for me about the turtles is that they work together, they're brothers, etc. And "Rise" didn't change that aspect. So, I suppose I should recognize that. Not that I'm a "Rise" hater, but it's far from my favorite.

and there in lies the problem.

Franchises can only really be one thing...and a few variations of one thing, before they become totally un recognizable.

Star Trek Enterprise may have been the last true real variation. after that, all we get are the picards, and discoveries, and lower deck variants.

TMNT has reached this point. if you go all the way out there, you get the TMNT summer shorts. some good, some horrible. some can't even be called TMNT. But the good will always have some of the core elements in there.
and that is where the repeats come in....and the core of the problem.

you can only reboot something so much before even the reboot is the same old thing.

Eh...

As a female fan myself, I've seen way more guys into it than girls.

Most of the female fans I knew back when I was in my TMNT fandom peak in the mid-2000s, were into the 2003 cartoon, knew nothing of the comics or any of the other shows or movies, and mostly liked the romance aspects like various ships. I never really knew any other girls who were as deep into the franchise as I was.

Not sure if things changed with 2012's fandom. I only dabbled in it very briefly.

It depends on what circles you interact with. My experience among the comic book and toy collectors, as in people who are active within groups that focus on these things, is that they are heavily, HEAVILY male dominated.

However, on the broader scope of people who just enjoy the adventures of these characters, definitely at least 50/50 male/female, with a probable slight lean toward female.

Anecdotal, but that was mostly my experience as well. With the 4Kids show also getting a lot of female attention because "The Turtles are hot now!" and so on.

I guess that makes sense, or at least that it'd be "kinda even". I mean I've always been aware that it's had a large female fanbase - for various reasons - but the idea that the girls outnumber the guys seems suspect to me.

I mean, I'm definitely of an older mindset, but every single thing about TMNT is generally rooted in things that appeal to little boys more than anyone else. So while I can definitely believe there's a lot of female fans, the idea of there being a lot more than guys just feels "off" to me.

It's like a lot of girls like wrestling, too. And I'm always like "Why? You're supposed to be smarter than that!" But a lot of them do. More than guys? Probably not, but I'unno. If so, that'd be weird, to me. It definitely wasn't "made for them", just like TMNT wasn't "made for them". So it's kinda weird that so many of them like those things.

Of course, I'm a grown man who just watched two hours of My Little Pony on Discovery Family so I guess I really shouldn't be surprised by anything at all.

And yes, the companies to make content could stand to stop targeting genders as well, but as consumers of content there's no reason to get hung up on who something is made for. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't.

Growing up, my brother and I watched all the same shows and movies together. He'd watch the stereotypical female targeted shows with me like Barbie, Disney princesses, My Little Pony, etc. while I'd also watch the action cartoons, movies, etc. with him that are generally targeted towards boys rather than girls like TMNT, Yu-Gi-Oh! (we played the card game together and still both play on the app and with physical cards that he collects), Lord of the Rings, X-Men, Transformers, Digimon, etc.

The same situation applied to our toys. I liked to view it as a Shrek sort of universe where lots of different stories came together. We had Snow White's Kingdom and other characters like Barbie Anneliese, Erica and Dominick (who was a bigamist because they decided to make Julian and Dominick a 2-in-1 doll and I was not going to keep changing his clothes), Aladdin, Jasmine, the Bratz, Shrek, the Shredder, Marik, Yami Yugi, Gaia the Dragon Champion, various dragons, Digimon and various others. We'd often have random wars break out. The rule was that no character could die once they were inside the boundaries of the kingdom (the room) so we could happily have a massacre with them all back to life once the war ended. We played with the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars action figures separately since they were too small. It still amuses me how much we changed some of their personalities just because the toy version of the character would have a dopey look on their face (Aladdin) or look a bit evil (Snow White).

I'm not big into merchandise. However, all my brother bought was the Shredder action figure and a sticker book. I've bought 5 DVDs from the 1987 show, all the seasons of the 2012 show, the Ultimate Visual History book and The Art of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles book so I've bought more than my brother anyway. I'd like to get a ninja turtle action figure sometime. I imagine that the only reason that my brother didn't buy one when he was younger was that they didn't look very good as action figures at the time.

When I was in school, most girls wouldn't have watched Yu-Gi-Oh!, TMNT, etc. but the ones who did all had older brothers as far as I know. For some reason though, all the girls the class ahead of me all seemed to be very into Yu-Gi-Oh! with them bringing their cards to school and trading them. It was an all-girl school so it wasn't due to the influence of male classmates. It completely by-passed my class bar a few.

From my experience, a lot of them were mildly acquainted with the 80s series, but allege that what got them into TMNT was 2003. Though, eh. Like, I was a part of a roleplaying game with other female fans, and I'd try to talk about the current arcs in 2003 TMNT, and they'd kind of...steer away from talking about that, and would mostly want to talk about how (insert turtle) was hot, and whatever pairings they liked. They didn't seem very interested in discussing the actual show most of the time.

The bulk of the female fanbase, for almost any iteration, seems to be like this. I know it's absolutely an obnoxious boys club, like many things, which makes it less accessible to take part in, but seriously, this is sooo prevalent. Happens with guys in female aimed or female character dominant properties, too, I'm not trying to make a subtle commentary or something.

The early days of internet fandom speak especially strong to this. I remember being online in the 90's & early 2000's, the amount of women peddling erotic fan-fics & roleplays, or just having general locker room talk about the turtles was overwhelming & put me off joining in any communities for maaad years. Even here, though it was better moderated, of course. More fluff than snuff.

In my experience, the women who actively collect merch or seek turtle talent at cons, are not like that. Obviously, there are plenty of real fans among ladies everywhere! But there's real thirst out there. :teek:

I think it's so weird to look for shipping in the TMNT franchise. Other than the obvious April/Casey (which is usually kinda boring IMO in most versions), there's not much to say. Females shipping the Turtles with each other is just the same toxic nonsense males are accused of doing with females in other shows, but at least said females are humans.

Uh huh... pretty sure I recall more than one discussion here about a certain Thundercat, for example.

Some guys just don't seem to like it when girls do it too. lol I mean, I get it, most male fans aren't going to see what some female fans do and it prob makes most of ya uncomfortable to hear it, but can't really stop women from being women and seeing male characters like that sometimes, human or not.

edit: I almost kind of wish PD had brought back Venus, because knowing Bay they'd have tried to make her attractive, and it would have been kind of funny to see how uncomfortable some male viewers are with that... lol

I misread the discussion and though it was about tmnt not being targeted to girls, but it was more because some troll account so my post made no sense. What I thought the discussion was "how come they don't target to girls". Women can enjoy anything but there's data on who buys things and they cater to those since anything else means they might lose their jobs. Girls can like whatever they want and I welcome female fans in fandoms, but I agree most girl fans do tend to be the "shipping" variety which aren't the best but whatever.

I remember hating that while I was watching it, but then it gets to the end, and I was like, "OHHH! Okay! That was cute."

I think, if they ever did a TMNT series set in the future, I'd like to be similar to this, except maybe have some mutants mixed in with the humans.

Problem is, at that point, it's not really Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles anymore, is it? It's a whole different entity, even if one of the TMNT is still present.

I'll play a Scarlet Witch for this and say: "No more mutants".

If there is an aspect of TMNT, which, IMO, should be excluded from future incarnations, is an abundance of mutants. Just keep TMNT and maybe occasional random mutant here and there, but no "mutant of the week" or "mutant town" nonsense. That just cheapens TMNT existence and quickly devolves "funny cartoon animals thing".

On one hand, I agree. I like the idea of them just being 'freaks' in a cruel world with ruthless ninjas and other dangers around them. One of the worst aspects of the 2012 series was its 'mutation fetish'. Look, I loved 2012 TMNT, but they overdid it on the mutants and freaks (Casey was one of the few relevant humans in the entire series).

On the other hand, I do like some of the mutants and weirdness. This is also something the toy companies (ie Playmates) wants, so they can sell more merch.

I think a balance needs to be struck, and they try a 'best of both worlds' approach.

This, all day long. It's fun when you have a few storylines here and there where the turtles can walk around and be themselves, like the turtles in space arc, or something like that, but for the most part, yeah, keep that stuff to a minimum.

I found some information !

Inspired by the best selling TMNT comic by IDW we bring you TMNT The next chapter. A new 2D traditionally animated series based off the wildly popular comic book.

We all know the story of the turtles but not what happens next after the shredder is defeated! Mutagen has gotten everywhere and they're all restricted to a city called Mutant Town where they are discriminated against.

We are very excited to announce this new show based on the fan favorite arc as it will deal with all the contemporary issues society is facing and educate on what is expected from today so everyone no matter gender, race or species can feel safe!

I think, weirdness can be achieved via different means, like aliens, robots, whatever. TMNT'verse is big and bountiful, you can find everything and a kitchen sink there, so I think, it is not necessary to evoke (a lot of) mutants at all.

Just keep the most famous ones around: B&R, Leatherhead (if he is a mutant), Slash, maybe Rahzar and Tokka, Baxter, if necessary.

I mean it could be possible that it's a continuation of a previous series. I could see it POSSIBLE maybe it being the sequel series to Rise. It makes sense with the name not mention previous incarnations did have name changes but still follow the same version of the characters case in point there was the TMNT 2003 series then TMNT: Fast Forward, then TMNT: Back to the Sewers. Different names for each but still follows the 2003 version of turtles and characters.

Considering they killed off Rise early (they shortened the second season by half), it's unlikely to be a continuation of it. If Rise was successful with kids it likely would have gotten at least a 5-year run like the 2012 show did.

Didn't see it in the thread after a quick glance (apologies if I just missed it), so just dropping this link in here.

https://uspto.report/TM/90367277

The page looks to have a timeline for the trademark process, including mention that the "application will be assigned to an examining attorney approximately 3 months after filing date." So might not be any updates to that until at least March? If the process is that slow, then I guess that might rule out the Netflix Rise movie.

Also a couple viewable document files attached to the page, one an image that's presumably the basic text stand-in for a future logo. The other document looks to be the application data.

Depending on how long these things take to make, could it be they're already working on it behind the scenes so they can at least have enough to show a trailer or something by the time they do finalize the rights?

itll be interesting to see what the industry will be like netflix isn't going anywhere anytime soon, hbo has inflated numbers with their free services, prime video only exists because of the shipping benefits and that helps it be number 3. Disney+ has a lot of power behind it and a lot of money spent, unsure if the other ones will ever be profitable. AT&T has a lot going on HBO Max but I dunno. The 2003 series is the closest thing to last ronin and IDW. So the success of Last ronin showed what we all say that something like Rise of TMNT will never be succesful but it must be something at least as serious as 2003 or better/more violent to be succesful. So the next series either will be based on IDW or will be something like 2003 . If it is again like rise or even 1987 series it will faill.

We can always hope that sales for Last Ronin being as fantastic as they are will wake Nick/IDW up enough to either go darker with the ongoing or to start a new series in the darker vein & let the old series die the slow horrible antagonizing death it currently seems to be 14 issues after the 100 milestone.... I'm sure Nick even saw a slight uptick in TMNT movie dvd sales and such over the last couple months, because it brought the franchise back into the spotlight for a lot of lapsed fans. I don't think 130,000 copies printed in a dying medium is enough for viacom to care. Two decades back copies that sold that much were cancelled on the spot for being failures.

You're focusing too much on the medium. The message is "wow, people really like adult TMNT" whether the medium is dying or not.
On the contrary - the more books you sell in a dying medium, the more impressive the feat, no?

They don't need to re-ignite the comic book industry for the book to prove a point. They just need to outsell the "kiddie"version of TMNT, which they have. Then the question becomes "Does this version outsell the kiddie version in the movie, and television series, etc too?"

Even if it generally sticks to the comics, there will certainly be more of its type, which is a step in the right direction. Less censored TMNT comics would be a sweet victory.

I wouldn't discount the success of the book though, just because the industry it is in is not in it's prime. Judge it according to other comic books today, not Jim Lee's X-Men #1 of the 90's. "Three Jokers" was also a big success, sales wise, last year. No one is comparing that to comic sales from two decades ago and claiming Joker actually isn't that popular, because those sales are just a drop in the bucket compared to the 90's, y'know?

Also keep in mind that this was a comic book sold at more than double the typical price. So yeah, more expensive to produce, but it's raking in a ton of money.

Your average fan is never going to know what, "The Ronin" is.

They'll think you're talking about some Japanese samurai movie or Usagi Yojimbo.

Sure. Probably not. Unless they make a movie. Mostly irrelevant to the point though. "Ronin" doesn't need to be a thing to casual fans for the point to be valid.

"Market research analyst" is almost as useless as being a high school guidance counselor. I'd never brag about that. I'm sure it pays well, but there's nothing moral about telling people their own individual thoughts and opinions don't matter because "everyone else" disagrees. And that's literally all that job is. "Statistics show us that Red sells more than Blue. Blue is therefore useless." Good lord, what a waste of a life. That's like the polar opposite of "nuance", it's nothing less than a job completely dedicated to eradicating independent thought and forcing everyone into groupthink.

I mean, do you, man, but don't try and claim any kind of "superiority" over anyone else, because it simply isn't there. To someone like me who values individualism over all else, you may as well be Satan.

What recent push? You mean that game? The point of that is clearly to homage the Konami games as well as possible, that's why it looks like the Fred Wolf cartoon. And it's like one thing, what else is there?

I really can't see a full series.

But I can see them doing a movie or special with the 80's Turtles. That would probably be ideal, since it's also easier to get the old voice actors to reprise their roles for a single movie than a full series that could potentially go on multiple seasons. Hell the Rise of the TMNT movie could be a testing ground of movies set in various TMNT universes if we're lucky going forward.

Only if it's a full on 80's TMNT movie. Enough with the crossovers where the joke is 'the 80's Turtles suck'. There wouldn't be ANY modern day TMNT cartoons if the 80's Turtles legit sucked and only had 1 season.

Nobody really knows that though. That's kind of like saying those early Batman and Captain America serials had to be good for the modern movies to have been made in the first place. And it's not like some things don't get their first adaptation decades after publication, if the Fred Wolf cartoon never existed there could still have been a TMNT cartoon.

I have always said I wanted a new FW series but set on modern times.

With the announcement for the new TMNT: Shredder's Revenge game, There's a big push for FW TMNT to make a comeback, I have seen a lot of the reactions to it and they are filled with joy and excitement.

People love the FW TMNT because they grew up with it, and bringing that style back would make tons of people happy. Nickelodeon has tried and failed to capture the nostalgia of FW TMNT. I think its time to really look into that and make a new show that will appeal to all ages.

Thinking the OT could have a revival is not really that out of the question:

- Nick already did two different crossovers with the 80's Turtles in the 2012 cartoon. Even getting back all the original voice actors to reprise their roles that 4kids was unable to do with Turtles Forever

- Cartoon revivals are a major thing now. Young Justice got revived for Season 3 after being canceled years ago. Animaniacs and Tiny Toon Adventures got revivals. There's rumors B:TAS might get a revival of some kind. Hell even Futurama got to come back with 52 new episodes after originally being canceled by Fox. Dragon Ball Super exists. Star Wars got 3 new movies and Clone Wars got a Season 7. Star Trek Picard is a thing.

If you don't notice all the revivals with other franchises I don't know what to tell you.

Another tired old chestnut from haters is the constant insistence modern writers wouldn't 'get' how to handle the old school cartoon, all because Turtles Forever dealt them rotten.

The 2012 TMNT episodes which featured them were often said to be marked improvements over all of that, they got the old VAs back and actually tried connecting the show more to the overall lore of the series they were guest-starring in, revealing details on Krang's past and actually trying to redeem Rocksteady and Bebop. Everybody won in that scenario. Fans of the OT got growth, and fans of TMNT 2012 got a great adventure which had connections to what they watching.

Modern animation humour has a lot of bite to it, the humour in OT could have bite too from time to time, although nowadays it seems softer because everything gets more and more amped up over time. That's what evolution is about...as we grow, so should shows and formats we grow up with.

Just today, I was watching a reaction video where a 40-esque old gamer obsessed with TMNT was watching the Shredder's Revenge trailer with his kids, who aren't even teenagers, and they were all pumped for the sight of the 80s TMNT and singing the theme song.

The haters in this community are stubborn, too old, and not in touch. TMNT needs to evolve, but to do so, it must evolve it's only real sure-fire success story. And that's Fred Wolf.

Cope.

Eh... They still took a ton of potshots at the 80s TMNT, and basically made them incompetent buffoons in many scenes. Didn't 2012 Raph imply they didn't know how to fight well at all during the second crossover? Jeez.

Nah. That's like saying Batman could have only thrived in the early 90's by following in the footsteps of Adam West's Batman. They went back to the comic book source material and look how the character has blossomed.

Fred Wolf is ever-important moment in TMNT history. Crucial to the type of success the brand has had and a merchandise staple, but not the future of the franchise. That reaction video you saw isn't an anomaly relegated to Fred Wolf TMNT. Just look up the reaction video to the TMNT being brought to Mortal Kombat or the sales of The Last Ronin. People just show up for quality TMNT content. They don't need it to be Fred Wolf-related to get excited.

There will always be pizza and other Fred Wolf elements thrown in, but the future is in the MCU or Batman method: towing a smart line between respecting the source material, and pleasing fans of all ages.

Remember "Brave and the Bold?", a lightweight Batman series that harkened back to the golden and silver age of heroes, and people loved it. This was all during the 'blossoming' period of edgelord Bats.

People are bored of 'edgy' Batman, particular the comic book fans. You're the Tom King fan, you remember we all wanted him to be married to Catwoman only a few years ago, they didn't want the bleak future that awaited him in the likes of Batman Beyond, they wanted him happy.

That too is also a "Who the hell knows?" kind of deal. We'll never know of course but it is entirely possible.

Let's just be clear here, there is literally no reason at all to believe the first TMNT cartoon had to come out in the late 80's or even that had to be anything like what the Fred Wolf cartoon ended up being in order to be a success. There isn't even any reason to believe the first TMNT cartoon had to be a success for others to exist. Maybe that is easy to forget because the first TMNT was made in the late 80's and was a success, but who really knows how things would have shaken out if that wasn't case?

Consider this alternative scenario:
No cartoon was ever made in the late 80's and the playmates deal fell through. In 1999, Mirage makes a deal with McFarlane Toys to produce a toyline, focusing on high quality action figures and no playsets. A cartoon is produced to market this version of the toyline. It has Savanti Romero as the main villain and April is head of a delivery company. The show only does moderately well and ends after four seasons. In 2009 another toy deal is struck and a cartoon with the Rat King as the main villain and April as a mechanic is made, which turns out to be a roaring success. This basically leads to TMNT being thought of as a 2000-2010's thing, despite having been around for over 20 years.

So, what about this scenario is unbelievable? Nothing as far as I can see, if anything it's a more typical road to TV adaptions of comics than what actually happened to TMNT in the real world.

Would the concept of Savanti Romer as main villain work though? That would mean every episode would be about time travel or reality altering shenanigans and we're already asking the audience to swallow the concept of talking humanoid martial arts turtles.

Do fans remember brave and the bold as fondly as Batman: TAS? Not even close. Either way, I don’t think a lukewarm received cartoon is proof of anything. You’d have to expand on why that is relevant.

I’m not the Tom King fan. I commended DC for hiring him to write Batman, because he was a hot name in the industry, I didn’t praise his Batman run. Important difference.

People aren’t bored of edgy Batman. That’s ridiculous. I mean, I appreciate a zany, colorful - Morrison Batman very much, and I don’t need everything to be gritty, but generally speaking, people want serious Batman over Adam West Batman. The one that resembles the source material.

Again, I’m baffled at how Brave and the Bold even matters. If we are pointing to cherished and successful Batman interpretation, among mainstream audiences and hardcore fans alike, the first things people think of are B:TAS, The Nolan Trilogy, Burton’s Batman, Frank Miller, or even Affleck’s portrayal of the character, for many. Maybe that last one is polarizing, but still.

I didn't think too much about the concept aside from it being a clear indicator that this hypothetical show does not resemble the Fred Wolf show. It doesn't matter too much how the show would be, just that it's not really the same as the Fred Wolf show. Same thing with the hypothetical reboot with the Rat King.

But if you had to ask me how it would work and I had to give an answer... One possibility is that he's not necessarily the main villain in the sense that he shows up more than anyone else, just that he's the biggest threat and most other episodes can be occupied with like Purple Dragons and Baxter Stockman. Or an alternative could be that he starts out with relatively minor spells and resources but builds up to being a more credible threat over time.

But like I said, it's somewhat besides the point. The actual point is that there is no reason to think the "Shredder and Krang with Bebop and Rocksteady in the Technodrome plotting to take over the world with whatever horseshit April reports on that week" thing had to be the winning formula for having an impact. For all we know it could just as easily have been "The Triceratons plan to take over the world and the Turtles need to protect the Fugitoid and April so they can collaborate on a weapon to stop them", if the premise had been something like that then we'd be having people trying to state that is what the TMNT "needs" to be instead.

Short version of the point: We just don't know if the first cartoon needed to be like the Fred Wolf cartoon to make an impact.

the first things people think of are B:TAS, The Nolan Trilogy, Burton’s Batman, Frank Miller

Nolan's Batman is just as polarizing, Begins and Rises have divisive opinions, The Dark Knight is the only one that is praised unanimously.

Miller's Batman is revered for Year One and Dark Knight Returns, but that's it. All his follow ups are considered some of the worst work of his later career and all of comics, especially All-Star Batman.

Burton's Batman goes off the rails with Batman Returns, as memorable as that is, it's 'just a bunch of stuff that happens'. Michelle Pheiffer and Christopher Walken are the true stars of that one, not Keaton or Divito.

Batman: TAS's reputation gets more and more degraded every time Bruce Timm is invited back to do anything with it, because he's a pervert and out of ideas.

people want serious Batman over Adam West Batman. The one that resembles the source materiall.

The 'source material' wasn't always so bleak and edgy, that's the point. It's gotten to the point that side is becoming almost self-parody now.

I'm not saying Adam West Batman is the answer either, but a nice balance of light and dark is needed. Something more colourful, a straight act in a crazier world, not "who can one-up the other in acts of self destruction"

I don't think people hungry for 'edgy' Batman even understand what the character even is at this point, and certainly don't know what's best for him.

I used to hate The Batman, but on reflection it wasn't that bad and it did improve, people had a grudge against it for the 'Bat-Embargo' taking away opportunities for Justice League Unlimited to use Bat-villains (which made them more creative)

..That, and they made the Joker look like a clown Goku.

In comparison to the examples I cited, it's definitely a lukewarm reception. I mean. It's a niche cartoon that has it's fans but it's not culturally relevant to Batman the way other Batman projects have been.

Zarius, you can tear down the projects I've named and find fault with them, but it doesn't change the fact that the public generally embraced them more than Brave & the bold. I think we are getting in the weeds with this debate, but I just don't think TMNT needs Fred Wolf to survive any longer.

My guess... still Next Mutation. Rise second as it made itself rather forgettable outside of it's own hardcore fans, and the Bay films are largely innocuous and more forgettable just being two films that came and went and nothing long term like a series. Next Mutation is weird enough with the sound effects, etc to keep it's "wtf was that" edge.

I would pick Next Mutation easily over the other two, any day of the week.

All three of them make me wanna hurl a brick through my TV... but at least TNM has a passing resemblance to the characters as we know them, and they're not some perverted "recreation".

"Rise", I can't condone because of how unapologetically dumb it is. I cannot abide "dumb" TMNT. And I swear to GOD that I will hit my finish on anyone who chimes in with "TMNT s'pozed to be dumb, tho!"

And BayTurtles... I just... I can't even... I want to find out where the people responsible live. And eat their skin. Or failing that, just take a giant White Castle sh*t in the refrigerator and the toilet tank. SOMETHING. Transgressions such as those demand recompense. A blood sacrifice. SOMETHING.

I don't particularly like TNM. But it's reasonably low on the "Leo656 Wants To Commit A Felony" scale compared to the other two.

I find The Next Mutation to be the most unwatchable (I was never able to finish it). The second most unwatchable is Bay Turtles. I was constantly looking at the clock when watching Out of the Shadows. I could not stand Bebop and Rocksteady or Krang and the humour. Then there were just the completely stupid scenes like the turtles jumping out of an airplane. For that matter, I didn't particularly like any of the turtles. They all annoyed me. I would defnitely choose to watch Rise over the other two.
