View Full Version : Paramount Plus and TMNT

Paramount Plus has launched. It's a streaming service that brings the content from their previous service CBS All Access together with new and legacy content from Nickelodeon, BET and others under a new umbrella to better compete with Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Apple TV+, and the other popular streaming destinations.

TMNT Social media accounts have posted that lots of legacy TMNT content is now available there to stream. It looks like this service will be a hub for lots of TMNT content down the road, especially after the upcoming Netflix deals have come and gone.

I won't get into all the offerings of the service. You can research more here (https://www.youtube.com/c/paramountplus/videos) and here (https://www.paramountplus.com/).

My question is, if new and exclusive TMNT content like a new series, direct-to-paramount-plus movie or the like came to Paramount Plus, would you want that? Do you think a streaming service might have more to offer TMNT than the standard Nick channels (larger budget, possibility for teen or adult rated content, etc.)

Look at the new CGI Spongebob companion series (https://youtu.be/YHYweb7WgMU) launching there for an example of the quality it might have if they did.

I suspect we may see some exclusive TMNT content there at some point, possibly starting with the upcoming "TMNT: The Next Chapter", so I wanted to get a thread started where we can discuss the service and what it might bring for TMNT, as well as get peoples current impressions of the service if you already subscribe or are thinking about doing so soon.

I guess my dream would be for a new live action series featuring suits like the 90s TMNT films, only done at a higher production level similar to DC's Titans or modern Power Rangers shows. Next Mutation was a long time ago, I think it's something worth looking into for them.

According to the TMNT twitter. Rise will be added later this month.

I can see some exclusive stuff from TMNT coming to Paramount+ down the line. Also that CGI movie from Seth Rogen, I bet that one will be on Paramount+ after 45 days of its theatrical run.

Well, first off, the 2003 show should already be on there and I know Rise is coming. I would also also assume the PD movies, the 2012 show and possibly those shorts will be on there. I assume the Fred Wolf cartoon, the OVA, the 90's movies, the 2007 movie and Next Mutation won't be due to copyright issues.

As for original content? As in what I would like or what's more probable?
In terms of what I would like... I do have some ideas of what might work:

A series of more accurate animated movie adaptations of the major Mirage Studios arcs.
A series adapting IDW up until issue 100 (Just change it so that Jennika and Krang really die, Hob's bomb fail and a few other key changes to tie up the loose plot threads).
An movie, possibly live-action, based on Last Ronin.
Standalone shows featuring characters like Casey and the Fugitoid as main characters, not so much spin-offs as attempts to make these characters work divorced from the TMNT.

But as for what's probable... Nickelodeon is on life support, it'll probably get shut down around 2025 or so, maybe it'll last beyond 2030 but I seriously doubt it. The kiddy section of Paramount+ (which might get labelled as Nickelodeon) will probably replace the channel, meaning the new TMNT content on the service won't be too disimilar from the 2012 show or Rise.

Hm, why do you say that? All TV channels ratings are down from 10+ years ago, but I don't think the channel is in trouble. They can just air Spongebob 24/7 and that alone would keep them afloat.

A channel that literally only exists for the purpose of airing episodes of a single show is practiacally dead already. It's a goddamned zombie of a channel at that point.

I really hate that so much has become streaming exclusive. We’ve literally gone backwards in TV formats. Netflix makes sense and Amazon Prime but that’s about it. Maybe Disney+ is ok (I don’t have it though).

Now everyone thinks they’re worthy of having a streaming service when it’s just breaking apart franchises and new content that would have been widely available to anyone with a decent tv provider.

I know companies just want part of the success that Netflix started but I really believe it’ll balance out at some point and someone will figure out how to bundle things again or at least make them more practical. It’s ridiculous how many there are now.

I complained when Cartoon Network/Boomerang created a streaming service moved new Scooby content to it. They do eventually air reruns on TV but after like a year. Sorry but all those old cartoons are NOT worthy of a paid streaming service when they’ve been in reruns for decades upon decades.

They still show old cartoons on Boomerang so I don’t know what the point of their service is. Portability?

I’d have to agree with this to an extent. I don’t even have Netflix, admittedly, because, while some of its exclusives are tempting to me, I wish I didn’t have to pay monthly for a service I wouldn’t even be using 24/7. Sadly, I know I’m in the minority there...

As for TMNT in particular, whether it becomes exclusive to Paramount Plus or not, I admittedly don’t have the best hopes for the franchise, especially since it’s already been established that Nick only has one real hit show right now, which isn’t even a new one.

People must stop paying for streaming services and then they will all die. When this happens Diseny, Netflix, Warner Bros and Paramount will be forced to make again some real tv channels(not stream services) and air all of their series there like they used to do until this crazyness with streaming services started!!

Even before we have exclusives on each tv channel, this is no different. I think it’s a healthy competition.

What’s in store for TMNT, we’ll see. If it’s really good, people will come flocking to the platform just like The Mandalorian and Wandavision did for Disney Plus.

Yeah, there's nothing more vulgar than a rich f*cking thief.

Guy's got half a million in the bank and he's nickel-and-diming on how he watches TV. And bragging about it incessantly. That's how you make friends.

"Bread for your starving family" this ain't, and you ain't Robin Hood. You're not "fighting the Man," you're just a selfish, greedy bastard who thinks rules don't apply to you. That doesn't make you smart, it just means you're a narcissist and a sociopath.

I try to like you, but you make it really hard sometimes.

For a franchise whose cartoons are partly dependent on toy sales and needing to draw enough attention to get that interest, what good would it be to restrict viewership to only those willing to buy the streaming service. Sure, put it on there for people who have given up cable and can't see it on regular tv, but don't put it there exclusively.

It's almost as if paying for cable used to be understood as already paying for content from these companies.

I just gotta be blunt... I don't think Nick has made one single good decision since they bought the franchise.

They've made some money, sure, but one figures they could make a lot more than they have, if only they tried a little harder. Like yeah, they already made their money back, but every effort they've put forth was pretty halfhearted, except maybe the NickToon.

I always get the feeling like Nick went into the whole TMNT endeavor with very low expectations, and so long as those expectations are met they have no urgency to actually try and grow the brand or improve the situation.

This will fail, way too late to the party (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/studio-profit-report-netflix-reigns-paramount-and-sony-gain?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social). HBO Max will likely never be big despite all the money AT&T is pouring into it, Disney was only able to make it because of their strong brand & all the money they put into it but mainly also releasing during the pandemic and a year earlier. I see no TNM so no subscription from me. Paramount just doesn't have the money to keep up with the major players in the game.

Yeah, for the most part.

The 2012 show did well and that's great. They let the Batman vs. TMNT thing happen and for the most part it turned out pretty awesome. Probably because they must have just let DC do their thing and kept their own hand out of it, but still, they were brave enough to allow it. (And more shocking, have aired it on Nick, albeit a little edited.) They've also allowed Last Ronin to happen and sounds like it is also doing well. There's some small ray of light there, but so far they aren't taking it and running with it. That we know of.

But for some reason they keep on failing to acknowledge that an older audience would be a viable target for a series. :tgrumble: Maybe they have behind closed doors after the bombing of Rise and not capturing their target audience for it, I dunno. But it has bugged me that they haven't bothered despite their overall company owning more channels than just Nick. If they ONLY had Nick and were simply clueless and unable to go elsewhere, fine... but they have plenty of other channels with content for older audiences. I don't think it would be that hard to just hand it off to someone else under the company umbrella that might know how to do something that isn't just for little children.

I just started a free trial. I won't subscribe, as I really try to limit my monthly fee's, but I thought it might be fun to browse around. I was hoping they'd have the original cartoon, because I was feeling nostalgic.

I ended up watching like 5 episodes of "The Real World" from the early 2000's. Pretty disgusted with myself. I'm not one to be shy about ripping on reality television, but seeing it for the first time in a while, it's almost as addictive as it is grotesque. I suppose just appeals to the lowly versions of ourselves that like to judge others and eavesdrop on drama.

I also watched a few episodes of the animated "Aeon Flux". I'd always meant to check this show out and I'm glad I did. Utterly strange and fascinating. I can't decide whether it makes me even more uncomfortable than "The Real World", but either way, it's much more impressive and recommendable.

Wow, I remember catching Aeon Flux sometimes as a young teen back in the day...and rarely knowing what was even going on. lol

Is there much new content, or is most of the service just paying to watch reruns?

Saw an ad for it that showed a quick glance at the 2003 TMNT. They need to use them more. Remind people what a good show looked like.

Nah, the TMNT franchise was in dire straights by 2007-2009. The 4th movie didn't exactly light the box office on fire, and of course the 2k3 series was wrapping up its run with the final seasons. Then Volume 4/Tales more or less ended by 2010 (besides the few issues PL got out after).

TMNT would have been dead the entire 2010 decade if it wasn't for the 2012 cartoon and IDW getting the comics license.

Viacom doesn't mind having evergreen IP die, that's why it was always a concern to me. They now want to be late in the game in reviving franchises for fans. I think they'll still take a break after the movie and cartoon failure they just had and focus on what's hot like Avatar. But we'll see I do think Viacom was a mistake but can't see any other company that would've treated the franchise better really, no matter who bought them it was going to be 1987 Turtles all the way.

No Things > Lots Of Things, All Bad

I do think Viacom was a mistake but can't see any other company that would've treated the franchise better really, no matter who bought them it was going to be 1987 Turtles all the way.

For as much as I bang on them for some of their business decisions, WB/DC would absolutely not have been that. They would have put out several different projects aimed at different audiences the way they did with He-Man for 10 years. Their main series was a very grown-up and violent PG-13/R-rated series that was like a more serious Lord of the Rings, whereas their Thundercats and Injustice cross-overs were more suitable for all ages in their presentation.

I don't love a lot of the decisions WB makes. But they're the only major company that understands that popular licensed properties don't have to be 100% Kiddie Town, and their general output reflects that. There's zero chance that they would have spent all of their time regurgitating FW.

I guess they simply didn't care enough at the time to pay an exorbitant amount of money to buy what was at the time a "dead" brand. Shame. Unless Viacom gets bored and sells it to them, there's no chance to fix that particular mistake.

Yeah, if someone else was to buy them, I'm not even sure who would actually be reasonable. :ohwell: With Nick I guess there at least isn't really a sea of similar properties for them to get lost among, the way they might if one of the big comic companies had them, but Nick really needs to hire people who know what to do with them.

That's because you didn't see how masterfully they handled the He-Man license. :trazz:

Seriously though, if the question is "Can any big-name corporation balance the TMNT brand on multiple fronts, while appealing to both the kids and the older audience?" then the answer is, "WB has been doing that with several properties for a very long time already." They're more or less the ONLY company at present that even makes an attempt to do so, if we're looking at it objectively. Who else even tries?

Meh, streaming won’t go away. This is the future.

Scheduled radio and television ruined family time for almost 100 years, and more or less prevented many families and friends from going out evenings and do something else. I'm not sad to see it go.

Even as a child; I would often hometape programmes instead of being dependent of the clock all the time. If I played with my friends in the afternoon after school, I home-taped programmes and watched during early evenings.

These days, I only watch live broadcastings like sports at the time they air. The rest, I stream a day later or so, using each channel's play service to skip the boring commercials. Then of course, there's the Youtube but that's more for watching video clips...

It is sad to see so many people in do it even when they are out with their friends and family. Mostly are people who are obessed with twitter or facebook or youtube and want to check all the time if they have some new messages or something. How long before this failure of a streaming service merges with another? with peacock? the newly formed Discovery/Warner Media company? Clearly paramount + can't compete even AT&T decided to spin-off and basically sell warner media and this service is #9 in subs. Clearly TMNT deserve to be on another platform.
The great merging of streaming services is happening, we'll have only a few as hollywood scrambles to compete with big tech so most mergers will likely be allowed.

It goes beyond simply merging streaming services. Seems like ViacomCBS as a whole is on the block.

Think we’ll see a lot of m&a activity this year.

How long before this failure of a streaming service merges with another? with peacock? the newly formed Discovery/Warner Media company? Clearly paramount + can't compete even AT&T decided to spin-off and basically sell warner media and this service is #9 in subs. Clearly TMNT deserve to be on another platform.

it can continue be on Nickelodeon and dont need to be in any streaming subcription service. All these will fail and dissapear as people are getting tires and angry of having to use so many streamign services to watch the series and movies they want. It is a matter of time until they all fial and dissapear and evrything return back to normal and free tv channels/tv.

Yes some streaming services will fail or consolidate but it's naive to think things will go back to the old linear model. That's dying and there is no recovery.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but anyone who’s thinking of subscribing to PP in the UK (it launched this morning), there’s only the first season of Rise and the full 2012 show. No 2003 series or Platinum Dunes movies

What? It’s like total opposite in the US. I just mentioned this in the tv/movies board recently. Full 2003 series but no 2012 series. PD Movies are also there and full Rise. Very strange.

The UK launch content has been quite lacklustre in all areas, doesn’t hold a candle to Disney Plus’s launch a few years ago. I think the PD movies have been available on Amazon Prime recently which would explain why they’re not there. No idea why 2003 isn’t there, but since it was really the only reason I subscribed to the service, I’ll go back to my DVD collection.

No VPN’s seem to take me to the US version, but I can get onto the Canadian version of the site. It makes no sense.

I only used a free trial. I don’t care to have Paramount +. Their TMNT content is just so weird. Again it’s worth mentioning Turtles Forever is not on there either. The grand finale to the 2003 series which like I said is available. None of it makes sense.

While the original cartoon has become non existant on Pluto, the third season has been added to Paramount Plus. So I guess that's something.

Wait, they don't have the full series on there?

So it appears that we've reached the point where NO version of TMNT is airing on the Pluto channel. They really should rename the channel if they're not gonna air TMNT on it.

I been noticing the Totally Turtles channel has only been airing episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Haven't looked much, but did see that Airbender was on midweek last week. :(

Was bad enough the TMNT couldn't have THEIR channel on the weekend, now this? FOUR series they could give airtime to (and have shown in the ads!), yet weren't even capable of it, and now Airbender/Avartar with two series gets ALL the airtime? WTF. I don't get it.

Give those two series their own channel instead of taking over another, is that so hard? I hope it's just related to the Netflix series coming out and will frick off after while.

Totally Turtles has finally hit the UK! Half a decade after its’ arrival in the US and it is only airing the 87 show.

Oh, THAT'S where it went, the UK finally got tired of waiting and kidnapped them.

In semi-related news, Paramount+ has been removing several Nickelodeon shows... I really hope they aren't allowed to take something they bought from another company, like the 4Kids TMNT show for example, and make that a tax write off. After a decade of near complete neglect, they finally bothered to give it wide distribution and it would be horrible if they decided to do something like that.

Which shows have they removed? Are they big time (SpongeBob/Rugrats etc) or the lesser known ones people don’t generally care for?

https://www.nickalive.net/2024/03/paramount-removes-slew-of-nickelodeon.html

The ones they removed now are:

Are You Afraid of the Dark? (2019)
Big Nate
Blue's Clues & You!
It's Pony
Middlemost Post
Ollie's Pack
Rugrats (2021)
Ryan's Mystery Playdate
Santiago of the Seas
That Girl Lay Lay

Earlier this year they also removed:

Abby Hatcher (seasons 1-2)
All That (2019) (season 1)
Bunsen is a Beast (season 1)
The Bureau of Magical Things (season 1)
Butterbean’s Café (seasons 1-2)
Fresh Beat Band of Spies (season 1)
The Haunted Hathaways (seasons 1-2)
Hunter Street (seasons 1-3)
Instant Mom (seasons 1-3)
Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (seasons 2-3)
Nella the Princess Knight (seasons 1-2)
The Other Kingdom (season 1)
Paradise Run (seasons 1-3)
The Penguins of Madagascar (seasons 2-3)
Robot and Monster (season 1)
Side Hustle (seasons 1-2)
The Substitute (seasons 1-2)
Sunny Day (seasons 1-2)
T.U.F.F. Puppy (seasons 1-3)
Tak and the Power of Juju (season 1)

So yes, these can be considered "lesser ones", but I bet there is someone out there who is unhappy about this. The point is though that they could remove more in the future and then it might be something more people care about.

What no way. They (Paramaount / Viacom / Nick / whatever they go by now) fully own the rights to TMNT 2k3. I don’t see how It costs anything more than server space for them to host It on Paramount Plus

When a show gets moved to Nicktoons that always means it's on the chopping block. I guess no one was watching the new Rugrats which means there won't be a third season.

If that means no more commercials for them on Pluto, etc... to be honest, there's a couple on that list I'm not sad about.

Seems kinda pointless to outright remove them though. Edit: Also why I still prefer to have DVD hard copies of things I love. Thank goodness 2003 did get that set.

It's a pity that scene with the Tengu Shredder getting sliced in half was cut from the Ultimate Collection box set and Turtles Forever being the cut version. I wonder if we ever will get another complete series box set with the episode intact and the uncut Turtles Forever included in the box set along with the Mayem From Mutant Island episode (I won't get my hopes up though). We were lucky to even get that Ultimate Collection box set. See that scene in the episode 'Turtles in Space - Part 3: The Big House' where Leo says the word "Spoons" did your copy cut the word out. When I was watching that scene on my Ultimate Collection box set I couldn't hear him say that word for some reason. It didn't just happen with my copy, someone else mentioned it on here before about having the same problem. Thankfully never had the problem with the older DVD's. I never got the blurry picture with any of the episodes though that a bunch of other people where getting.

I couldn't be fussed on streaming tbh I just don't trust it. There were some shows I was looking up out of curiousity that weren't available in my country on some of the streaming services and I could be in the middle of watching a show and the streaming service might just remove it so I won't get to finish it, so couldn't be bothered for the hassle. I'd always have that worry, the internet could go down too which happened a few times when I used to have an Xbox One which wouldn't let me play my games without an internet connection. Love the box and disc art for the older releases of the 2003 TMNT DVD's. Ordered myself the Blu-ray steel books for the first two seasons of The Mandalorian yesterday as well which I'm looking forward to getting.
