I have a British Literature class and the we are studying the Renaissance right now. The topic of Ninja Turtles was brought up when a warm-up included "The best Renaissance artists were: Raphael, Michealangelo, and Leonardo Da Vince." Someone said (not I, surprisingly), "What about Donatello?" The class sort of laughed and the teacher said, "Even if this list included four artists, Donatello would not have been my next pick." She said that some other artist was better and had achieved more fame. His name was like Bonachelli or something (this could be way off because I don't remember). Anyway, don't you think it's odd that Donatello got chosen to be a name, when there were other artists at the time who were better? :-?

can you imagine the teenage mutant ninja turtle Bonachelli!!

well it would be weird :goofygri:

I thought about that too, but if you think about it, the only reason it would be wierd is because we are so used to Donatello. Anything else just sounds silly. If Don's name started out different we would think nothing of it.

By the way Bowser, that signature is great!

What did the real Donatello do in the arts actually? He's the only one I never really knew much about. Come to think of it I don't know much about the real Raphael but I have heard his name mentioned at least (I think).

I can't tell you exactly what he was, but I believe he was mainly a sculpter?
I'm learning Brit Lit, so the we don't learn much about the artists.

Donatello (or rather Donato), the artist, was a sculpter. He also lived in a different generation than Da Vinci and the others. Which is a big reason that he isn't mentioned often with the "big names" of The Renaissance.

Isn't Ren. art fascinating!? We studied it in my college Art Appreicateion class also. We studied each of the four Turtles' namesakes, tho I'd havta break out my old notes to tell you about each of them, lol! Tho I do know that if the TMNT creators were actually gonna name each turtle after it's namesake, and have the same personality as their namesake, Leonardo, not Donatello, would have been the brainy one. Since Leonardo Da Vinci is the scientifical genious. Interesting point if you ask me.

The TMNT are unavoidable in any sort of art history class, just a fact.

I remember doodiling a cartoon of Leo and Don in my "art appriciation" notes next to a list of the great renaissance artists which has the 3 other turtles and Don is asking "what about me?"

i just read this:

Michaelangelo was born in 1475 in the area of Florence (Firenze), Italy.
From an early age, he was the apprentice to the
famous artist, Donatello.

AND...

Raphael was born on April 6, 1483, as Raffaello Sanzio. He was born in Urbino. Raphael was said to be unusually handsome, pensive and fair. Raphael had born talent and received early training in art from his father, Giovanni Santi. He also learned new techniques from Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Beauty and serenity were his great emotional themes.

So jee wiz, all 4 artists knew each other it seems.

Donatello did not know about the artists during the High Renaissance because he was in the earlier part of the Renaissance. He lived from 1375 (?) until mid-1400s. The other three were in the the 1500s. Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci all knew each other. They were in competition with each other. Michelangelo lived through the next art period...early 1600s.

Michelangelo--sculptor, artitect, poet, and painter. But he wanted to be known as a sculptor rather than a painter

Raphael--painter

Leonardo--renaissance man. I have seen his notebooks in my university's library. If you can read backwards Italian.....I highly recommend people to look at them.

In Raphael's School of Athens....the artists of the High Renaissance are placed in there by Raphael. Everyone's challenge is to look at it and try to identify the artists in the painting. I know the answers. :) :D

I always found it kinda symbolic that Donatello (the turtle) was named after an artist who was not around at the same time as the other three, thus setting him apart. Donatello (again, the turtle) is also set apart at times from his brothers, so I wonder if that was one of their reasonings for naming him what they did? (Besides it being a really cool name. :D )

I dunno... Or, I could be way over-thinking this... :)

it is pretty ironic that Donatello (the artist) was arrested for hitting someone with a stick...

also Donato's personality does not match the turtle's. Michelangelo was a hot-head. Raphael and Leonardo were well-liked.

i always thought that turtles personalities didn't match the artist's, i once saw a self portrait of Raphael and he looked pretty girly, unlike raph, who is a tough guy.

about the namesakes.........THATS SO COOL!!!

notice that they don't have pupils!

The reason for naming the purple guy Donatello is simple. Even though the real artist/sculptor didn't live in the same generation, his name rhymes with the other names and overall, just sounds more synched up and in tune with the rest of the team. When you say all four names in sequence, it has this fluid melodic feel to it, adding to the unity of the team. So if Donatello was something else... it just wouldn't go over as well.

Donato was considered to be greatest artist during the early Renaissance.

"Bonachelli"

I think you'll find you're thinking of Botticelli. I think the reason he would be chosen is because he was a painter, as were all the others bar Donatello. Although Michelangelo sculpted, he is best known, as are Raphael and Da Vinci, for his painting. Artists who were only sculptors were, and still are, overlooked and perhaps even considered 'lesser' artists than painters.

Donatello may have been chosen for the turtle as he was a sculptor and so worked more obviously with his hands as Donatello the turtle does with his gadgets. Besides, Donatello sounds cooler than Botticelli. :P

Donatello helped to bring the way of sculptoring out of the dark ages. He methods are still being used today.

The Namesakes picture is great! That's a cool page Scientific Freak, Leonardo and the rest were incredible artists. Just imagine how they would have drawn the Turtles.

Boticelli! That's it. My teacher said she would have chosen that name instead of Donatello. In our text books there are works from Mike, Raph, Leo, and Boti but not Don.

*Leonardo leads, Boticelli does machines, Raphael is cool but rude, Michelangelo is a party dude!*

my textbooks have works by Donatello....

I am happy that you like my ongoing project. If anyone can contribute items to it, that would be great and appreciated.
