View Full Version : Will April ever be a pretty woman again?

No, this isn't a troll thread.
I'm legitimately wondering this. You might say "why does It matter? She's a cartoon!" but then please explain me why so many female anime and video game characters are clearly hot. Surely it can't be a coincidence.
April's most iconic version is the FW series. I think we can all agree she's a good looking woman there. But, for some reason, April has become a teenage girl ever since the Nick sale and is no longer the Turtles "big human sister".
What's wrong with the TMNT property having its own sexy female character? Doesn't mean they'd have to go overboard. Remember the FW series? They didn't go overboard with April fanservice exactly. April isn't meant to be a flirty and seductive woman, but not all pretty women are like that.
Honestly, every April design should be modeled after the FW April design since that's clearly her best design.
But, for some reason, more and more people seem to have issues with drawing hot female characters nowadays. Apparently finding animated characters attractive makes you some sort of freak nowadays. Well, if being normal requires me to not find Chun-Li, Nico Robin or Taki from Soul Calibur attractive, then I don't want to be normal.
Thoughts?

If I was a democrat/lunatic leftist, I'd call you all those -ist names they love.... but thats why April is no longer an attractive adult female. Also, because they want to push pedophilia & bestiality...
And I'd argue that Mirage April is the best version because Mirage is the best version of the Turtles. I'd also like to see Casey be an adult again rather than a teenager. Can be 18 and be both adult & teen after all. Lol

It’s highly unlikely. Beauty is now considered to be a sin in the 2020’s, because you’ll end up offending the least attractive population.
I’ve never been pretty, myself, but I don’t want every female character to look like me. I’m not that shallow.

Most male characters do not look like me either. And that never bothered me either.
I don't want to see an animated version of myself on screen. My life would make a very boring cartoon or video game.
Plus seems ironic for Turtles fans to care so much about this stuff considering they're fans of... 4 talking turtles.

Not likely. As you and others have pointed out, Prowler, "hot women" are verboten nowadays, because they make the not-hot ones uncomfortable. Now that she's been shifted from primarily being "The Turtles' Main Human Friend" to "Avatar For The Young Female Audience" as far as her role in the mythos, she's not allowed to be "sexualized". She has to be an "aspirational" figure for little girls, which means no boobs and she probably has to be young because "kids nowadays can't identify with anyone older", or some nonsense.
Never mind that all making April a teenager did was make everyone's Google Image searches a LOT creepier. Great job, Nickelodeon, way to have no foresight whatsoever.
Mirage is the best version of the Turtles

In the next TMNT incarnation they'll probably make April a fat girl.
As for hot women being verboten, that seems mostly restricted to western animation so far. Japan certainly isn't affected yet. As for live action movies... well Hollywood is still a place that cares a ton about looks. No one wants to see fat and ugly actors on screen. So no, Gal Gadot and Scarlett Johansson aren't going away anytime soon.
It's funny though. We're allowed to be shallow about real life people but NOT about cartoon and video game characters?! What kind of logic is that??
Maybe a pretty one, but not a sexy one. Not until Gen Y has kids who are coming into adulthood and sick of their parent's bull$#!( and goes completely another way culturally.
We used to create archetypes of attractive or strong people and strive to better ourselves after them.

We're technically not allowed to be in real life, either. Not long ago I made a comment on a friend's FB about how bad Kelly Clarkson let herself go and I got dogpiled by several people pretty fast. I told them it's not MY fault she quit being sexy and famous because she'd rather eat a whole Birthday cake for breakfast every day, and man that didn't go over well.

I know I’ve said this before, but I can relate to 4 talking turtles better than I can relate to the Eternals, who were supposed to represent “everyone”.
I don’t even like Jennika, who’s the newest female ninja turtle. Like Venus before her, she was created purely for inclusion points. But we’re not living in the 90’s anymore. You have to like the new female character no matter how badly written she is, because otherwise you’re a sexist, or in my case, a woman who is struggling with internalized sexism. They hate sexist male fans, but they especially hate female fans like me because I debunk their own twisted vision of feminism.

But that's just people being hypocrites really. Most of the rich and famous people are good looking. Especially women. Would Gal Gadot, Brie Larson and Scarlett Johansson be so popular and wealthy of they were ugly or average looking? Of course not. I think Scarlett is a good actress, but I'm not going to lie, if I didn't think she was attractive, I'd not bother to watch most of her movies. Gal Gadot is a rather mediocre actress, and clearly her hotness makes her acting skills more bearable.
People can deny all they want to but EVERYONE judges people by their looks. Otherwise why would women be required to wear makeup at work and men required to shave as well?
When I had longer hair and walked around with an old pair of jeans with holes in it people would stare at me more often than they do nowadays. And I could tell they weren't looks of approval. They probably just assumed I was a hobo or a junkie. It is what it is.

I can’t stand Brie Larson. She may be pretty on the outside, but inside, she’s as attractive as the Xenomorph Queen.

White Knights think that White Knighting gets them laid instead of Friend Zoned. But Friend Zoned is where they remain. Because even the same women who whine about "objectification and sexualization" are always gonna choose the hot guy with the sculpted abs over the Pillsbury Doughboy or the Stick-Thin Vegan.
Meanwhile, fat ugly chicks think that normalizing being fat and ugly will get them dick, by screaming "Bigotry!" every time someone doesn't want to have sex with them. Doesn't work that way, because we have Fleshlights now. I mean 99% of guys would literally rather stick their dick in a pencil sharpener than a fatso or a chick with a moustache. That's not gonna change no matter how much people like Lizzo scream "I'm beautiful, stunning and brave!" They're not.
If you want sex, and you don't have money, you gotta take care of yourself. That's it. Crying about how "unfair" or "mean" it is doesn't get anybody anywhere. We're genetically wired to only want to breed with those of "superior breeding stock", which means Attractive People. If you're fat and ugly, your kids will be too, and that's why every single guy's dick retreats like a cockroach in a bomb shelter whenever they see someone like Melissa McCarthy.
Plus it's just REALLY hard to look at fat, ugly people, especially while eating. Just f*cking take care of yourselves, people. It's good manners, other people have to look at you.

Anyway the funny thing about April is, nearly half of these forums members are women and none of them have April as their favourite character. Ando don't think they began liking her more after the Nick series either. Clearly she's not that relatable to girls and women as some would think.
I mean, I'm a guy who likes Sailor Moon. Is Tuxedo Mask my favourite character? No, not even close.

I've honestly never looked at any incarnation of April in anything and thought to myself, "Man, April is so hot and sexy!" I just haven't. Maybe the chick on the side of the arcade machine but that's it. Not Turco and not Hoag (though I did find a greater appreciation for Hoag later in life). April seems so clearly presented as big sister/den mother in the only incarnations that aren't shams that thinking about her in sexual terms always seemed icky to me, feeling as a reader as an extension of the Turtles themselves in a way.

 Yeah never once in all my years have I ever heard a single girl say April - or Lotus, or Venus, or Karai, or Kala, or Mona Lisa, or... - was their favorite TMNT character. It's all nonsense, this "people can only relate to characters who represent them" malarkey. It's a solution in search of a problem.

The reverse is also true. Adelle was a heavy-set gal, she lost weight and looks hotter now, suddenly she's fatphobic and a traitor to the cause.
In the end the Turtles are the main characters and I feel no matter what, girls will still want to look up to them and play as them. Even with April being an action girl now, girls would still rather pretend they're Raph or Mikey. Assuming kids even play pretend anymore and aren't just glued to their phones all the time.
And also, little susie better not yell too loudly that she wishes she was Mikey or her folks might sign her up for gender reassignment.

I understand the complaints, but they did just use Megan Fox in two live action films, all within the last 8 years. Doesn't matter if you personally do not find her attractive, she is 100% within what would be considered pretty and/or hot by most beauty standards, and you can't deny that.
So I mean, until it's been a lot longer than that before we get a "pretty woman by conventional standards" April, maybe hang tight a little bit.

Yeah, what was up with that one episode where Baxter hogtied her and her bent-over butt covering more than half the screen? As far as I can tell it wasn't done like for laughs or anything like that. As many times as the 'camera' panned in on 80s April's butt, a lot of the times it was pretty matter-of-fact but the 2012 animators were having way too much fun with that scene.

Yep.
Nick April and Netflix She-Ra: "We're making the female characters younger and less sexualized! You can't fap to them now, and you shouldn't be anyway, that's creepy and weird! They're cartoons! So yeah, we fixed it so you guys can't Rule 34 them anymore. HAH!"
The Entire Internet: "HAH lol n00b"
Seriously, it's f*cking aggravating because let's just say you're TRYING to look up some Rule 34 of 1980s April or She-Ra - let's be honest, a lot of people have and will - no matter WHAT you put into the Search bar, you can even specify "Fred Wolf April" or "Filmation She-Ra" or "1980s version" or WHAT ever... the more current versions in all their Rule 34 "glory" WILL still show up in your scroll no matter what. You can limit your exposure to it, you can't avoid it. Unless you stop looking for porn of your favorite cartoon characters altogether, and f*ck that.
I shouldn't have to worry about ending up on a government watchlist if I decide it's an April or She-Ra kinda night, for f*ck's sake. Thankfully, my folder is pretty well-stocked and so I don't have to Google search for April or She-Ra stuff ever again. But still, WTF?
So yeah, "thanks" Nick and Netflix. In your pathetic attempts to "stop people from fapping to cartoons" you made the Rule 34 a thousand times worse, you f*cking idiots.
I'm probably making a big mistake even jumping into this conversation, but...

This sums it up well. Fred Wolf April was designed to be attractive without ever being explicitly sexualized by animators (so far as I know), while that the Nick 2012 April may have designed to be "normal" and "juvenile" but was almost surely exploited (https://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=63774) by the creatives/animators. An exhibition in total depravity (https://imgur.com/4zc2TXM).

Well, it isn't anime, FW was for kids, and female characters shouldn't always have to have their looks as their first and foremost character trait. I'm not saying don't design aesthetically attractive characters, but if adult men find her hot is the most important thing about her and a main priority...
That said, I too tire of turning her into a teen peer and miss the big sister-type adult April. Will be happy when we can get back to that. When that happens, if any of you boys find her attractive, that's on you. I just ask that they don't style her off anime hoes, let her be a normal woman. Let the gender of female viewers be represented by normal women. Pretty sure men still find normal women attractive, so I think male viewers can manage. And the minority of them who can't...well then they need the practice in dealing with the idea that female characters are not always made with their turn-ons in mind.

Leo's example reminds me of being 11-12 or so and looking for websites about my favourite cartoons on the Internet. Eventually I ran into hentai of The Flinstones and The Simpsons. Two series I really wish I didn't see hentai of.
Eventually I also ran into Ninja Turtles hentai. Aat the time there was only one TMNT cartoon series, so there was only one possible April to make hentai of. Yes, I know there was Mirage April as well, but I don't remember seeing any hentai of her. Anyway, first time I saw the FW Turtles, Splinter, Bebop, Rocksteady and Shredder banging April O'Neil I was shocked. But unlike Flinstones and Simpsons porn, I quickly got over that and thought it was kind of... "cool" to see FW April getting Turtle... tail up her... package. Unlike Marge Simpson or Wilma Flinstone, April was certainly more appealing to the eyes of a boy who was about to enter puberty such as myself at the time.
If I was a kid nowadays, sadly I'd have to look harder to find Rule 34 FW April content.

There was no one I wanted to see naked more than April back then. I can't imagine how kid me would have reacted to actually seeing art of April nude and taking it.

Sometimes I do wish I had grown up in a world without Internet still. I was born in 1990 but always felt like I should have been born a decade earlier instead. A lot of the things I like happen to be from a time period that's kinda before mine.
In fact I got into TMNT at a time where the FW series was already over. I was growing up watching reruns of it in cable and frustrated that there were no toys or mercy of it for sale anywhere. So I kinda experienced my own Turtlemania alone. Strangely, my older brother who was born in 1983 grew up during Turtlemania and is the reason I got into the Turtles indirectly and yet he couldn't care less about TMNT beyond FW and the 1990 movie. He looked at the 2k3 series and kept complaining about the Turtles being "blind" and spending time in space instead of being in NYC constantly...

It's a very illogical franchise!
I mean there's many things to like about it and it can be liked from many different and disparate directions... but that also leads to a severe disconnect between the more polarized sections of the fanbase who can't ever see things from the other perspective and don't understand how/why anyone could feel that way. We're all guilty, to an extent. What makes each of us like it on an individual level is generally much different than what led our sibling or neighbor to it.
Many things are similar but I think because there was such a hard shift from semi-serious to Full Blown Goofy so early on in the franchise's lifespan, it led to there being a deeper "broken base" issue than some other franchises have. Every franchise has it but the TMNT fans of differing opinion are mostly VERY far apart so as to be irreconcilable on nearly every single issue.
This forum is a testament to the fact that after "I Like Ninja Turtles", nobody really has much in common as to Why.

It's kinda odd how after fighting a ninja and then little biter robots the next plan was to reveal aliens on earth and going to space to fight humanoid dinosaurs.
But I mean the main characters are talking humanoid martial arts turtles so that kinda stuff makes more sense than a guy running around in a bat costume. I can't imagine a story where Batman is after the Joker and then gets warped to Apokolips and deals with Darkseid for 3 issues and then is warped back to Earth and continues the plot of finding the Joker for 2 more issues.
I did find it original how the plot went to 'sneak inside TCRI to rescue Splinter' to suddenly warped in space with Fugitoid and Triceratons and then back to TCRI to conclude that story.

Other than the 3.5 people here who like the IDW book, most of the convo taking place is about the toys. Pretty crazy actually that TMNT in media is crap right now, but the toys being produced is the best it's ever been for accuracy and choice. Worst it's ever been for price though, obviously.
I think this speaks to the fact that TMNT is in an era of wish-fulfillment for long time fans and collectors. For me, the last real hurrah of TMNT was 2012 Nicktoons. I imagine the last hurrah for me in toys will be the Archie Comics line and given the price I honestly don't know how long I'll be hanging in for that.

As Eric July once said regarding race-bending: “Once you go black, you can’t go back.”
Sure, Baxter Stockman will remain black, as he should because he was black in the original Mirage comics. Why the Fed Wolf version was whitewashed, I don’t know. But April being white again? Doubt it.
Like April, the white red-haired Ariel is done for. If you prefer her over the new live-action black Ariel, then you’re just a racist who’s trying to live in the past.
And I seriously doubt Nick Fury will go back to being white again, as he originally started out as.

They literally said it was because they couldn't have a black character both be a villain and also a bullied subordinate of another villain, as this would be perpetuating racist stereotypes.
I mean I kinda get it, based on the onscreen dynamic between the characters of Baxter and Shredder in the FW cartoon. In picturing it in my head, yeah, that'd be some "slave and plantation owner" sh*t if everything else were the same but Baxter was black. But they just as well could have kept Baxter black and not made him such a groveling toadie for Shredder and then the problem mostly resolves itself. AND one can argue that 4Kids Baxter got it even worse, but then he was also portrayed as a stronger and more intelligent character than FW Baxter was.

Did anyone involved with the 80s show ever say that? I know that's what people assume but as far as I'm aware no one has ever confirmed why the character was changed to Caucasian.
I remember one of the Mirage crew posting early concept art for the cartoon Baxter and saying that they envisioned him as a Doc Brown-like character. I remember them also saying they didn't know why the character's race was changed.

Peter Laird has also confirmed that they sent all the concept sketches of Baxter to Playmates/FW, including the ones where he was depicted as a white man.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bLaSJk-pyFg/SNBLqXEmN0I/AAAAAAAAAjk/pTXB0rgotjE/s320/TMNT2charsketchessm.jpg
Which, you know, does lend some credibility that they simply didn't know what the character looked like. Then again, issue 2 already existed at that point and thus the final design was already out there for anyone to see, so if that's the case they didn't even bother reading the comic for inspiration.

Well one thing for sure, OT Baxter was definitely not a head taller than April.
Yeah... Hey, wait a minute. In the comics, Baxter used the MOUSERs to steal stuff and April came into contact with the turtles because he forced her to flee into the sewers when she found out. In the show, April was reporting on stolen objects and forced to flee into the sewer because the one who orchestrated it wanted her silenced. Later on in the same season, Shredder hires Baxter to give him access to the MOUSERs. And Splinter is also kidnapped and the Turtles need to rescue him from a high tech alien hideout, not in the same episode but it does happen in the one before...
... I can see a somewhat more comic accurate story here... Was the reporter thing just done to make sure there were five scripts and a reason to introduce Bebop and Rocksteady? I have a similar theory about Bebop and Rocksteady, Shredder steals two whole animals from the zoo but once Bebop and Rocksteady are mutated into their forms they vanish, so I'm wondering if the intention was to just have Shredder mutate the zoo animals but having the gang assault and the "recruitment" scenes added a few pages to the script. As would the Channel 6 scenes.
OK hear me out, so what if an early version of the show went down something like this:
Episode 1. April (unwittingly) and Baxter have been hired to work for Shredder and when April gets suspicious, Shredder sends MOUSERs to get rid of her. We then get the sewer scene from the comic instead of the gang scene. The rest of the episode plays out much like the third episode.
Episode 2. This one plays out much like the first two episodes, minus the intro. Here we get Shredder sending out "stronger" robots to replace the MOUSERs, with Bebop and Rocksteady being new experiments from stolen zoo animals.
Episode 3. Essentially a combination of episode four and five, in which the rock soldiers attack earth while Shredder tried to demuatate the Turtles, and otherwise playing out similar with the possible exception of Krang growing into a giant.
This version of the plot makes more sense to me and we already know episode 5 was partially recycled from some Transformers episodes. So is it possible that the show was rewritten to be two episodes longer?

IDK I think it was more like 'if you want to be approved for a cartoon show, you'll need a toyline. We made Bebop and Rocksteady in the toyline, put em in the cartoons."
I do wonder how Eastman and Laird felt when they first saw the toy designs. Now the turtles made sense, different colors and the belt buckles to tell em apart and to make it easier for kids to have parents buy them essentially the same character 4 times. They still had the pupil-less eyes and short bandanas and angry look of the Mirage Turtles at least.
But yellow-jumpsuit redhead news report April? Purple robot mummy type Foot Soldiers with an actual foot as a logo on their foreheads? Shirtless Shredder with a cape? Bebop and Rocksteady? A Turtle Blimp and a Turtle Van?
Imagine if Todd McFarlane gave another toyline Spawn rather than create his own and they made him green and blue because the suits felt it was more marketable? And replace the cape with batwings?

No, I mean more like their origin, not the characters themselves. What I'm basically asking is if Bebop and Rocksteady were initially going to be the Zoo animals themselves, rather a pair of human thugs who were mutated into their forms.

I like April O'Neil's character design from the original turtle series because I simply thought she looked pretty. As an adult her looks remind me a little of Fujiko Mine and Daphne Blake. This may be shallow but I never cared for 2k3 April's character design. Clown red har, ghostly white skin...she looked awful. I appreciate her characterization but I was no fan of how she looked. Actually I got to say that the 2k3 series did not do a good job drawing female characters in my opinion, they kind of looked like scrawny guys with long hair. I am not a fan of making April a bombshell or a plain jane. Some girls like seeing female characters that are stunning looking and well rounded characters complex characters outside of their looks.
I think it is just a turn off your mind and forget the real world for a bit and just enjoy some entertainment and pretend you are like them (or are them) for a little while. Not all girls are like, "wah, this character is objectively better looking than me! I feel bad about my self now," honest to goodness some girls will just enjoy watching sailor moon or Black Canary and some of the enjoyment comes from how pretty they look. Personally I can take both, I thought that Mirabel from Encanto had a good character design even though she was animated to look average and definitely not be glamourous. I do feel that some animated version of recent Wonder Woman have become less appealing and people act like, "hey at least she looks like a warrior now" I saw a recent animated justice league movie and she looked like a soviet union female athlete and her head looked like a helmet. The hell? They want her to look more "realistic" and so far what I have seen has not impressed me. If you want her to look powerful and physically appealing the 2001 Justice League character was perfect. She looked both powerful and physically appealing.
To take this back to the turtles, I always liked April but I was never into the franchise because of her. I was always all about the turtles and what was going on with them, they were the stars and show and they were the ones I found interesting and low key identified with. I liked the turtles for a reason that identified with. I was brought up strict, and I mean really strict I was almost never allowed to go any where and it was hard to socialize with kids my age outside of school. So, as early as the original series, I identified with the seeming depression the turtles seemed to have to be stuck in the sewer unless they had business topside, or that Splinter seemed strict with them. Watching cartoons as a kid you see these cartoon characters with endless freedom, wondering all around town, adults seemed to not be on top of them usually and they were always socializing. The turtles pretty much had to keep to themselves and seemed their very situation put unfair restrictions on them, I identified with that. It did not matter to me that they were all boys, their sex did not really register to me as important. The fact that they were wacky, talking turtle people drew my attention more than them being boys instead of girls. So I never really needed a token girl character to identify with. In later incarnations of the turtles where they had to sneak behind Splinter's back to do what they wanted top side was I identified with too, because when I got older I learned how to be sneaky so I could some freedom, because I would basically have to ninja my way around my house and my parents to go places and get in and out of the house. And Splinter being a hard ass strict parent that the turtles had to deal with felt all to real to me. So that's my two cents.

Yeah, I don't know if they just wanted to make sure the designs were more 'kid-friendly' or whatnot, but they really did their best to make sure every woman on the show had a very modest barely-there figure, even when wearing skintight outfits, there was barely any 'detail' there. Other than that, the weird slightly jagged angular style overall looked odd on the women and at times made them look like they had broad shoulders in certain frames or close ups.
I kinda want to say Karai and Joi had possibly the most feminine and curvy figures on the show, which isn't saying much, but the one that really suffered from the odd art style was Renet. She almost looked like a guy.

Thoughts?
I think you do have a point. Since cancel culture has been around companies are much more hesitate to make their toy sculpts or cartoons really “hot” like in the 1990s. Just a sign of the times I guess.

When this question was first asked, of course nobody knew what they had planned for April in the 2023 movie. I do still think it will bounce back at some point where they'll depict her as a more traditional "pretty" slender/fit ginger woman... but that could be a while.
Honestly, I think based on early buzz that the 2023 movie is likely going to be a pretty good success, and could get 1 or 2 sequels, and might even be the inspiration for the next animated series. SO... with that in mind... you might want to get used to the April that is depicted there.

Is this April a kid or adult, the design can go either way, especially if she's supposed be a teacher.
One thing I didn't notice was she was even given a flat chest too. I saw a foreign YouTuber say the other day
"Why doesn't she have breasts if she's so fat? Even men get some breasts when they get so fat. It's like they purposely tried to remove any sense of femininity from her".
Still not clear how old this April is supposed to be, the internet seems to be arguing both ways about it.
One thing for sure, she's not gonna be running alongside the turtles this time. While the Turtles face Leatherhead, this April will face her sworn enemy. The Stairs.

I'm also confused about April's age, everyone seems to think that she's the same age as the turtles but she doesn't look like a teenager at all. She looks like an adult or at least college age.

I assumed she was going to be teacher when I saw the leaked storyboards because she looked 30 (at a minimum) and had access to the school during off hours. But now I'm not sure, I think the implication might be that she's a high school student rather than a teacher? Regardless, yes, her age is ambigious as of the moment. With the voice you'd assume teenager but the design itself could be just about any age.

Likewise been scratching my head over her age. Was it confirmed she was a teacher? I feel like something did, but now I can't recall?? Or did she just seem like one based on the storyboards?
The character seems like she could be a late teen...or 20s. Could be a student, maybe college? Perhaps she's a teacher's aid or a college student working as one while finishing her degree? If she didn't WORK in the school is would seem odd that she's capable of letting the Turtles in after hours.
But on the other hand, she's clearly definitely got that investigative angle happening, so why pursue a degree in education if that's the case... Unless she is a journalism student helping out as an aid in a classroom.

Well... for the confused gentlemen out there, let me explain:
People's proportions vary and depends on genetics. :)
Some families are genetically rather busty in their body proportions and some are not. You could say those families who aren't are a bit more streamlined in build, with the thinner members of a family being built smaller up top, of course, but the heavier ones still keeping a certain proportion as well, and what they've got tends to blend in with their allover weight instead of gaining overly large breasts.
I come from that sort of family where the heavyset members (such as my mom and sister), while they have more than me (the lone lean one), they are not flat chested at all, but their proportions in conjunction with body size are still similar to mine, just on a larger scale. And similar to this April.
In contrast to some others, like a friend of my mom's who has always been a rather large woman with the big back breaking kinda boobs to go along with the rest. Not everyone is built like her type, nor does being fat turn everyone into that.

Irony #1 - there very likely isn't a single "dudebro" on these forums.
Super Irony #2 - you are defending the race swaps with a classification-assumption (basically modern racism) that actually was routinely used in the very cartoon you are registered here to discuss - considering that all four brothers are arguably "dudebros".

The irony of all this is that, one of the reasons they aged down April in the Nick series, was to make her less sexualised and less of eye candy to the fans. But that didn't stop hentai artists at all. And nowadays, when you google ecchi or hentai art of April you're bound to see stuff of the more modern Aprils as well. Unlike when I was a kid/teenager where nearly all April hentai was of the Fred Wolf April. 2k3 April didn't really get a lot of love in that department.
So, good job, Nick. You made NSFW searches of April art much creepier. I hope you're proud of yourselves.

I think some people here forget how insignificant the 2003 cartoon series was in the mainstream. The Nick cartoon series and even the Bay Turtle Turds had much more mainstream attention than 2k3 and TMNT (2007) did. A lot of people to this day are still unaware there was a 7 season long TMNT cartoon series back in the 2000s. It's not like it was obscure, but it didn't exactly take the world by storm either. I have no idea what were the hottest things around for kids in 2002-2009, but it definitely wasn't TMNT. And I'm not even talking about anime here. I'm sure there were several American cartoons that were bigger than 2k3 TMNT at the time it aired.
Therefore, I'd not be surprised if there was more MM April Rule 34 than of 2003 April. The more popular a series is, the more hentai it gets.

You and I are about the same age. It’s true the 4kids show barely moved the needle for anyone in our age group or older. But it was at least moderately successful with people born around 1995-2000. It’s pretty highly revered over at r/TMNT and I imagine it’s a lot of people that were whippersnappers around then.
But uh, yeah I don’t go looking for hentai so I can’t comment there lol

I honestly don't think April was ever supposed to be super hot. Can you look at any drawing of her in Mirage (interiors, not Richard Corben covers) and go, "WOW! She's a super hot chick!" I don't think so. She's supposed to be sort of girl next door, which is complimentary to her serving in the Den Mother/Big Sister capacity to the Turtles.

Perhaps. I was 12-13 when it came out. That's 7th grade, I think. I was reaching a point where people of my age were beginning to outgrow cartoons. The only cartoons I remember people in my class talking about at the time were all anime. And by the time I got to 9th grade 2004, only the geeks like me were openly admitting to like cartoons.
who else like 2k3 cartoon in the schools attended? I think I knew a couple of guys who liked it... but neither were as much into it or the Turtles in general like I was. One of them was a fan one day and a few weeks later I spoke to him about it again on MSN Messenger (shows how long ago it was, heh) and he just said "I'm no longer really interested in TMNT". I took the hint and changed the subject. Kids and teens are very fickle when it comes to cartoons and fads, remember.
It is quite possible that 2003 TMNT was popular among kids 5 years or so younger than me at the time, but I have no idea. I'm not saying it was an obscure show by any means. It wouldn't have lasted 7 seasons if it no one was watching it, after all! But it was not exactly a mainstream hit. sdp himself even said that the most controversial episodes of the series pretty muh flew under the radar in the US. You don't fly under the radar if you're mainstream.

Obviously the people who were kids at the time weren't making THAT kind of April fanart in the mid-2000s . Just like I'm sure barely anyone was drawing Fred Wolf April hentai in the late 80s/early 90s. I first found it around 2001 or so. By then, most of the FW series fans were young adults. Just like FW April was many people's first cartoon crush, I'm sure 2003 April was some people's first cartoon crush as well. It's not a perfect barometer for popularity or anything, obviously, but seems like simple mathematics, no? The more popular a series is, the more Rule 34 art it will get.

We can't determine the success of children's media on the basis of how many adults are aware of and/or care about it. By your own admission, most adults think of themselves as having outgrown it, so it doesn't really make sense to assume anyone older than the target audience is a primary concern. It's not even fair to assume "most people", that is to say most people older than 12 or so, knew or at least cared about the FW cartoon when it was still going as they would have likely considered themselves too old to care.
What what we do know is that the 4Kids' show ended up lasted three to six times longer than most cartoons of the era and that the show ended up having a clear impact on the creative decisions in the franchise going forward. By that metric alone, it's hard to say it was less successful than the show that ended up lasting 32 episodes less and a pair of movies everyone hates.
