Alot of my friends loves the old tmnt but they think the new Ninja Turtles series to be a little lame. I told them that this show can be dark and violent and they laughed and said it's not violent. I even showed them the first episode and they still didn't like it.
What's up with my friends?? Do any of your friends also don't like the new series?

Yes, I've encountered several fairweather fans that say how the old series was so much better. Whatever.

It sounds like you need new friends. Or at least to beat some sense into your current ones.
Okay, here's a better idea: don't follow my advice.

I think a lot of people just saw the old cartoon as a child, had happy memories of that but know that it's 'uncool' and wouldn't admit to liking it or want simply to leave the original as a childhood memory
My sister (17 years old) likes the old cartoon (well loves it...reignited by some trend of retro being popular again) but doesn't really like the new cartoon although I had persuaded her to watch a few episodes of the new series with me (Episodes 2-6 I think) she didn't really take a big liking to it
Suits me anyway, people have different tastes...

I haven't met many people that like the new show, because it isn't the same as the old one. They probobly watched it expecting the old style but it was a lot different, and seems a lot cornier. My g/f didn't really like this show much at first but I made her watch every episode and she got into the story. :)

Yeah I hear that a lot, the basic sentiment I hear from people is that the they liked the old show for its goofiness and nostalgic value, but the new show at first glance to the unlearned fan ( :P ) looks like they took the turtles and simply made it more violent for kids these days

I've got a friend who likes it. Most others don't even attempt to see it. You know the "cool" excuses. "I get tanked every friday so I can't get up that early!" meanwhile they just sit inside and play X-Box.

don't have that excuse in Alberta... It's "I missed it at 4:30 pm... musta passed out on the antiques roadshow drinking game I was playing."
Sad isn't it.

Most people I talk to about it like the new show but say the old show is better. When people say bad things about the new show saying it sucks how there's now Krang, technodrome etc. I explain to them that it's based on the original comics which were made before the old toon but they don't seem to care. I like the old show better but the new show is a truely exceptional cartoon.

I do not have too many friends that talk about the new series. However, the new game has been popular around here.

Okay, it's rant time.
Yeah I get into battle with classmates in my sixth period. This kid knows I'm into TMNT so he just gives me the TPB of the first 4 Archie issues that he found around the house, and so I mentioned the new cartoon. Four people said the new cartoon was the best. Here is something I'm sure you will have noticed about your "friends" that these people also had in common:
1. They haven't seen the old cartoon in a long time.
2.They have watched one or less episodes of the new cartoon.
3. They don't really watch Cartoons, at least not the Saturday morning kind, anymore
4. They're not into comics in a more than passive way (maybe buy Batman or something once a few months, or brag about all the Spawn issues they picked up in middle school).
Its all nostalgia man. IF the old toon was a new toon being put on today, I gurantee you none of your teenage and older buddies would give it the time of day. The don't even see the old TMNT as a show, they just have all the feelings they had as a child all bundled up inside of them and acossiated with it. Show them Moon Landing Leonardo and they will still probably fall all over themselves over how "cool" it all was.
Here are some examples of the arguments I heard:
Idiot Guyg: Due they were rescuing April and didn't know who she was...No man... just no...
Me: Uhm, moron, you watched two minutes of the third episode. Every version of the TMNT has had April and the TMNT meet in basically the same way. Even in this Archie comic I have in my hand...
Idiot Guy: Nah man... just no...
Idiot Guy #2: They're not chasing Pizza every episode? Man that sucks.
Me: Uh...well they still eat Pizza, but it doesn't take up 5 minutes of every episode now, and they might get Chinese take out every now and then.
Idiot Guy #2: Aw man that sucks.
Idiot Guy #3: I remember that giant Epcot thing...
Me: The technodrome?
IG3: yeah whatever. I don't really remember much (Like everyone I've met who in RL who lauds the old cartoon). It was so great. Man the new cartoon they're friends with some genius homeless guy thats so stupid.
Me: Well that was actually you saw two minutes of one of my least favorite episodes. Hey how about that episode in the old cartoon where the pizzas turn to monsters? Or remember when Splinter tried to hypnotize Michaelangelo into not eating Pizza and Shredder ended up thinking he was Mikey and wanted to go skateboarding?
Idiot guys: Wha? (IN their head: that doesn't sound like the show I loved...)
BASICALLY, the people that have seen the new TMNT (That are old enough to remember the previous generation of stuff) watch it for five minutes and see its not what they remember, then just decide its crap. And to they're minds, they're probably right. No cartoon will love up to the rose-colored childhood memories that have lingered within them. Not even the old toon, if they saw it today. EXAMPLE: Remember how great all those Nintendo games were? Man those sequels on XBox aren't half as good. Except if you bust out the NES, except for a handful of classics, you begin to realize these games haven't aged very well. But that doesn't stop you from remembering Paperboy as the greatest game every invented.
FACT IS, it doesn't really matter. The TMNT are not even close to targeting their old demographic; goofy and gimmicky are already being done and dominated by very we;; entrenched Japanese properties. The new TMNT is building a new audience (does that 10 year old I saw at Wal-MArt getting the Donatello Bo Staff remember "The Amazing Shrinking Turtles"? I think not.) which is very different from the old one. Every teenager+ I know who is into sci-fi, cartoons and comics (I.E., the kind of people that will wake up to see the FoxBox, call them geeks or the local comic book guy if you like) love the new toon.
Like the show says, "Things Change". Let the people who live in the past stay in the past; the vast majority of these people aren't pumping money into any animated franchise anyway. (like many of you guys said " Man I get hammered on Friday!" or whatever. Yeah right.)
Its not a secret. Cartoon Network knows the audience; teens and adults that watch cartoons making up a huge segment of their audience = need to buy up episodes of the new Cartoon.

Yes, thats exactly how most of those people are. But there are real fans of the old cartoon too, who still watch it and love it for what it is. There are many on this board.

Yeah that getting hammered excuse is lame, it's on at 8:25 on a sunday morning (talk about dedication) but I still go out on a saturday night if I want (don't get drunk easy fortunately) and once I've recorded it I can just go back to sleep for a few hours anyway

I myself feel the same way, "Wow, I used to watch this old silly show!" But it still has nostalgic values. The orig. cartoon, even tho it wasn't truely the orig. comic book story yada yada, it was still and always will the the orig. TMNT craze! That's what everyone remembers when they think 'Ninja Turtles'. Ppl I meet are like, "Oh my god, I used to love that show!" *they start singing* "Teenage Mutant Ninja TUrtles........Heroes in a Halfshell!" I feel the old show has some things about it that the new show doesn't have. The fun, the humor, the pizza......and just....well I can't explain....it was just cool! The new show is better story-wise and even action-wise, plus it's not as corny. In those regards I like it better than the orig. show. But when it comes down to humor and good ol' SHredder, Krang, B&R vs. TMNT fights, I go to the old show. THe new show is more serious, tho not too serious like Batman:TAS or antying. But some ppl remmber the Turtles being not-so-serious, and they prollly like that lightheartedness they used to have compared to the more-seriousness of them in the new show. The other thing I like about the orig. show is surprizingly the music. Loved some of the tracks. The new show I dont' care for the music as much, except one or two songs I hear from time to time. Most of the ppl I know like both shows, but one person likes the new show better simplly cuz she never cared for the orig. toon.

Good reply everyone. Another thing I can add is my friends never had a chance to watch the whole episode and they only watched like 5 minutes of it.

*cracks up*
Yah know, There are people in my school who still watch the old "Care Bears" reruns... Seriously, most in my school wouldn't admit to watching anything kids unless it was from the 1930's to late 1970's or had little to no violence in it. A bizarre fad, wouldn't you agree?
Then there's the Anime and more current cartoons club. A favorite from the TMNT deprived around 1993 to 1996 found BoH a passable replacement until the realtime show or rented the movies. Now we who liked the old show are watching the new show, or temp trading tapes of subs of our fave anime like Rayearth for it. There are a few diehard fans I've converted with my tape of the old shows (yes the same eppys as the ones Lone Wolf mentioned) And there are many who prefer the old show due to the goofballness of it. (the same ones who have old tapes of the MarioBros. cartoon/show & constantly have Abbot & Costello in the backround)
Guess what! the time lag at which Canadian channels accept american shows is at about 5-6 months rather than the 2 years from when I last had the tools to make the comparison. (Hence the reason a 16yr old can clearly remember the old show, other than the two or three tapes her parents bought when she was 6.)

There seems to be a theme around here of people being dissed for being
into the old toon. I'm bewildered actually, 'cause things couldn't be more different in my experience. Everything 80s/early 90s is being dragged up at the minute. The generation that was old enough to appreciate the whole thing at the time is attending college/getting it's first jobs now. I can't count the number of people who've said "hey, you'll never guess what they're making a new cartoon version of" and gone on to reveal an obsession from when they were nine years old.
Anyway, all the new toon and old toon have in common is summed up in the title. In the new toon, the mood is different, the characters are quite different, the whole approach is different. There's no reason someone who likes one should like the other.

I've had a surprisingly strong reaction to the new toon, and it's been mostly positive. My sister will watch it with me, although she pretends not to. ( She calls Leo "Boy Scout") My boyfriend is also a die-hard fan of both series. My dad will watch it too, but he says they all are on steroids. (At least that wasn't as bad as his Kenshin reaction, lol)

Some people dont like change.
And some people, like a buddy of mine in Pittsburgh was 1st introduced to the turtles through the mirage series, before they ever made cartoons, so to him anything that isnt orgional mirage comics is a bit lame. And not to mentioned he probably caught one of those lame one shots episodes.
I'll bring my dvd set next time I visit.
Speaking of which I had to hunt high and low for the turtle's dvd set!!! I finally found my copy at walmart of all places, and they only had 2 left. So did like every other store sell out of them, or never got them in stock?
Pretty cool if they actually sold out!
