Well, guess that does confirm it wasn't just a preliminary measure...

Figured more was on the way since the trade was labeled "Volume 1." Wonder if RK's newfound ability will be used on his frequent playmate Leatherhead?

I am curious to see how the new 2 issue format will play out, maybe in the style of Batman ‘66 cliffhangers?

I’d prefer rocky & Bullwinkle. Find out next month in teenage reptiles or ninja mutations.

How about we get this as the final page of each Part 1 issue?

Mona Lisa, a salamander is an amphibian as are the Pink Frogs so it wouldn't work, but he could control both Leatherhead and Slash.

I suspect that it would revolve around Rat King attempting to control the Turtles by breaking them up from within and then his unwilling soldiers until Splinter and Metalhead intervene. That's just my take. I am so glad it succeeded as a miniseries and now is an ongoing!

The interview just confirmed the stories are set before the end of Season 7 and 8, most likely right before Season 7's finale. I said it felt like these stories took place around Season 7, glad to see it confirmed.

Really awesome to hear that one of his ideas for a future issue is an Ace Duck story. It'd be great to see this version get an actual starring role so that the NECA figure can have more to justify its existence beyond a simple two-second cameo, lol.

Also very interested to see which characters introduced post-87 show we'll be seeing in this series, given his hints.

That's Dan Schoening for ya. Dude can replicate pretty much any style.

Wow, this picture is incredible. Its like Season 1 with dash of later designs.
Also, curious about them confirming timeline.
I'd prefer them to retcon Red Sky Seasons out of existence or make it "alternate timeline".

I see they’ve improved the writing. Like for instance the turtles are calling each other by their full names (“Leonardo”) instead of (“Leo”) like they did in the show.

Although I have to wonder, how long before this adaption of the cartoon becomes its own darker and more mature series like Archie did?

No, it's good to keep the final seasons, but set these stories before the Season 7 finale.

Never I hope. Unlike Archie, which I assume the plan was to go in their own direction at some point, the entire point of THIS comic is to keep things as close to the 80's cartoon as possible.

Yeah, it is. It's like... ok so who created the Mutagen? TCRI or Krang?

It took a while but I finally bought and reviewed the first issue.

I'm guessing Saturday Morning Adventures won't attempt to keep canon with the 2k12 series' "Trans-Dimensional Turtles" crossover that revealed that '87 Krang (or some version of him) was a reject Utrom from the 2k12 timeline. That was always a step too much for my own suspension of disbelief since the '87 show made a few (possibly contradictory) attempts to dig into Krang's existing backstory.

Yeah, it is. It's like... ok so who created the Mutagen? TCRI or Krang?

Eh, they just used an iconic recurring location from TMNT's history (that the '87 show never previously utilized) to keep from having to make up new labs and scientists for every story. I don't think there's anything in the comic itself linking TCRI to the Mutagen, so I wouldn't think too hard about it. It's just a fun nod. That's all.

That's one of the reasons why I'll always prefer the Wanted: Bebop and Rocksteady saga to TDT when it comes to the 2012 crossovers. At least W:B&R didn't play with the '87 show's (mostly) established canon in weird ways that don't make any sense. (What gets me the most about TDT's claims about Krang is the implication that there's only ONE Dimension X. Yeah, sure, 2012 Traag and Granitor are giant, mute lava-spewing guardians in a 3D world instead of human-sized soldiers made of stone in a 2D one, so CLEARLY these worlds have always been one and the same!)

Yeah, even though the FW show itself if a contradictory mess, it obviously doesn't make sense to treat the crossovers with the 2012 cartoon as canon. Hell, the 2012 cartoon's insistence that only ten dimensions exists results in some questionable ideas. Like, are we also expected to believe comics Usagi, FW Usagi and 2012 Usagi are all the same guy or is one third of all existance dedicated to Furry Feudal Japan?

Anyway, I was more thinking about how strange the decision to make something that was never part of the show had its typical role filled by something else wasn't just strange because of that alone, but because of how otherwise strict Nickelodeon were about not including stuff from outside the show. We know that Hun was supposed to show up but Nick rejected that, even though it wouldn't really be more strange to include him than TCRI.

I don't see it as a big deal. As long it doesn't run against FW canon, why not?
Its not like FW hadn't included some concepts from other versions of TMNT, like secondary mutations, transmaat, triceraton asteroid (granted the latter two were in the last season, after soft reboot, but still).

Technically, the existence of Hun would not contradict it either, but it was vetoed nonetheless. And if the dialogue about "genetic mishaps" is any indication, there could very well be a major change in place.

Aside from that though, the FW show is inherently a derivative of Mirage, so it isn't weird that the show itself featured elements from Mirage. Nor is it strange when it included Tokka and Rahzar. It just gets a bit strange when something like TCRI, an element that was explicitly replaced with something else and was never in the show, is playing such a major role.

While I wouldn't exactly argue against this comic using the Fugitoid, Karai, Savanti Romero, Renet, Tang Shen, Robyn, Klunk, The Justice Force, Nobody, Nagi, Radical, Total Carnage, Jhanna, Braunze, Obligado, Hattori or The Federation but it would seem a bit strange if they took center stage.

Technically origins of Rahzar and Tokka were never properly explained in the FW, outside of off-hand mention about "animals escaping zoo, because of Shredder" so TCRI can be written in it (sort of like Darkwing Duck comic book expanded on some stuff, which was never said in the series).

As for other stuff mentioned: Triceratons exist in the FW'verse, so there won't be problems in adding Federation or Fugitoid in.

And as for replacing stuff: 2k3 did quite an interesting thing where they've split Shredder and Splinter Mirage story into two separate stories: part with Yoshi's death was adapted as an origin of Turtles (Shredder finds Yoshi and kills him, which prompts Splinter to escape in the sewers and find Mutagen and Turtles) and later Yoshi and Nagi conflict over Tang Shen was adapted as a separate story arc in Season 4, by replacing Nagi with a different character and without much of a Shredder participation.

Such things can be interesting if done right, so I am not bothered by it. However, I wonder how they gonna adapt Utroms, if at all, since it would clash with Krang's backstory. Or one of his backstories, whatever.

I like that explanation.

I do wonder in head "IF" the Fred Wolf show had tried to introduce a version of TCRI into the series, would it have been more likely to use the comic book-accurate name or the Secret of the Ooze movie's TGRI label?

If they wanted to do so, I feel they would have done it in seasons 8-10, which attempted to be closer to a comic book in tone.

Honestly, I think it's best to pick up after Divide and Conquer. There are only two things to explain, which I did in my own explanations. If Erik wants to address the red sky color and change it back then address that Splinter meant that he taught them all the disciplines that he knew, but they have to perfect what they were taught. It would have been cool to see Shredder vs Dregg and Beserko and Dark Water to appear again.

Animated comics based on cartoons have never kept canon with the show very well sadly. BTAS has had at least 3 different comics set in the cartoon world and none really work as canon. I think 90s X-Men also had like 3 comics as well and they're all about to be retconned by the new show. If they bother to keep continity it'd be impressive.
Why can't TCRI have created the turtles? Did Krang make the ooze? Couldn't he have gotten it from TCRI and TCRI is also from Dimension X? I think there can be explanations.

I wanted to make a thread on the continuity of the 2012 show with 1987 since there are many questions that it raises by having Krang be from the 2012 universe. I mean I like that finally Krang became an Untrom but man does it break continuity.

Anyway, I was more thinking about how strange the decision to make something that was never part of the show had its typical role filled by something else wasn't just strange because of that alone, but because of how otherwise strict Nickelodeon were about not including stuff from outside the show. when did Nick veto Hun from having a 1987 version? what did I miss?
I do think in general we've seen other continuities creep into 1987. whether from the crossovers, or the NECA toys or just artwork and merchandise based on it, it's as if the 1987 had been closer to other interpretations. we have stuff like Casey Jones being heavily featured in merchandise as if he had been part of the cast and not only a guest in like 4 episodes, heck in their first appearance with 2012 Casey is there along the turtles. Karai appeared in the mobile game based on the 1987 show, I forgot the name. Triceratons are in the new Shredder's revenge game and neca line but they appeared like 1 minute in the show. I already mentioned Krang being an Utrom.

So yeah I don't see how adding elements from TMNT in general to 1987 being bad.

Neat little tidbit I just found out: the version of the first issue included in the Volume 1 trade has been altered to remove Michelangelo's mention of Casey bringing a Pizza over with April. He only mentions April in the trade, which is both more consistent with what happens at the end of the story AND with '87 Casey's character in general.

Finally found time to review the second issue. I'll be picking up the third soon. I like how this one actually references 'The Ninja Sword to Nowhere' and actually left it as a dangling thread. The Turtles defeated the Rat King, but Shredder still got away with the stolen item and he still intends to use it in some later issue.

I love this series! I almost want to see IDW and Nickelodeon do an official audio tie in with the original voice actors. Whenever they have Random House do it, it's just some dude narrating the story and the occasional crappy cheap voice over people like they did with the Archie series.
