Just saw this posted on the dreamwave message board.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From Peter David's site (http://peterdavid.malibulist.com):
"I have been informed by the fine folks at Dreamwave that they are suspending publishing on the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, with issue #7 (the second half of a two-parter) being the last one to ship. Issue #8 was to have kicked off the four part "T4: The Turtlenator," which Dreamwave has been advertising. Instead that storyline, currently being written and drawn, is being halted halfway completed with an eye towards possibly relaunching in the summer.
As fun as the series has been to produce, writing the first four issues under the constraint that they had to be based on the first four animated episodes resulted in issues that were, I think, not representative of what the series could have been. Plus, of course, one runs the risk of seeming superfluous since you're just rehashing stories people can see animated and for free. Issue #5, starting the run of wholly original stories, was the first issue I was completely happy with, and it was very well received...but not by enough readers. Particularly when one considers that Dreamwave has to pay licensing fees and thus has to sell a lot more copies than a creator-owned title in order to turn a profit.
I suppose sales on issues 6 and 7 will help determine whether we'll be seeing another run at the Dreamwave TMNT during the summer.

Thast sad to hear. But it's true that mainstream publishers need to do a lot of profit from the books before they consider them worthwhile. It's tue that the licensing fees makes the task even harder.

That sucks, big time. Now I have to wait 7 months just to see if it MIGHT come back. Damn it why can't DW just ride it through, they've only let the guy do two original issues! Geeze I was just starting to get into the comic.
Who the hell decided the first four issues had to be based on the cartoon anyway? PD did a damn fine job with the material he had been given to work with, especially when you consider he was rewriting stories that have been told a billion times already.
Man what a downer...

How's it PAD's fault? Because he was told to write issues based on the series for the first four issues (likely so people who didn't watch the show could get an intro to the characters? From his post, I gather he didn't want to retell the stories anymore then anyone else. He did fantastic with what he had, and the new stories were great as well.

I don't know about that.....my eyes either look at FOX or LAIRD...
but in either case this is really freakin sad!! I was so looking forward to the turtlbot series....guess this new show isn't as popular as I was thinking....
this is such a downer to my day man...I hope Lesean can shed some light on the subject...we really havn't seen him round much lately ....

Well then you are definety looking at thewrong direction. Neither Fox or Laird had anything to do with the dreamwave book. And New show is doing just fine, season 2 just begun and season 3 has already been confirmed.

hmmm I didn't mean why it was cancled I ment why they had to to do the first issues of the comic the same as the cartoon archie had to do the same crap......and I loved the archie series perhaps more then any tmnt universe..mirage second....
and I know the show is fine no need to get all defensive....I like he new cartoon and am excited with the direction it is going....
I'm not bashing just saying what I think....like laird said if he doesnt like something he's gonna pull the plug then rather have it become some lame excuse for tmnt....

This is really unfortunate. I thought the first five issues were great and really didn't think they were just retellings of the cartoon. I was looking forward to a future potentially as great and as long as the Archie series was.

this sucks, granted i think # 5 was the best, i really thought it was interesting to see the other side of those stories from TV. it was quite original, i've never seen that before, on a regular basis.

Sorry, I tend to get deffensive, there is a lot of totally pointless Laird bashing going on lately. But I'm not sure if the decision of retelling those stories had anything to do with Mirage or 4Kids either. It could have been solely Dreamwave's decision to introduce TMNT to those who haven't watched the show.

Mhh.... this news does suck much. I was personally thrilled to have Dreamwave take on the TMNT as well. While I will admit one had to have seen the FoxBox TMNT show to better understand the first 4 issues, it's a pity because of that they have decided to cancel the series. I also was under the impression they were selling well. I guess I was living under false impression or something.
But, you know, it seems that DW has had some history behind not being able to carry out a comic book series for very long. They are still new to the industry, and like Mirage, their success depends on the sales. Of course, the TF series is rolling along at a hearty pace (mostly cause there's like five times more TF fans than TMNT), but I have noticed how they would only run each 'series' for 6 or so issues. Seems that they are not planning too much ahead just in case for some reason they can't.
This is still sucky news though. :(

Selleing well, and well enough for the executives are two diffrent things. Heck the first issue sold out completetly, and I think so did issue 2. Company like Dreamwave, Marvel, DC, Image etc. are naturally in it for the profit, and it seems TMNT wasn't succesfull enough. A pity really.

The comic market today is BRUTAL. Dreamwave has been blowing series out of the water because its the market is ruthless nowadays. The new DW comic DID sell well, but to be frank the only way it was going to be profitable for DW would be if it was a HUGE, Transformers level hit. Issues one and two sold out, the problem was people didn't want to pay 3 dollars to read reruns of episodes they saw fully animated and for free.
There is obviously still potential here; I believe we have a better than 50-50 chance of seeing it relaunched.
Reasons to Be Optimistic
1. TMNT on Cartoon Network. This will provide a BIG surge for the series, and open up the doors for a relaunch.
2. It made above average (at least with the numbers I saw for the first 3 issues) sales, it just didn't keep the momentum. That shows that there is demand for a new TMNT comic, it just didn't delive in fans minds.
3. Season 3 confirmed.
4. Possible Hallmark movie. If that goes back into production, that will make a huge incentive to relaunch the series.

For the writing to do any good, there should be a well organized writing campaign.

The wrst part is that it's getting cut off right before the Turtlenator story arc.....That looked so kick ass! I wouldn't have been as dissapointed if we atleast got the turtlenator story arc before it got cancelled.
I want to see what LeSean has to say about this......

i've kept it on the low until its been official. but i guess Peter david aint waste no time. This is tru, TMNT has been canceled and for the reasons above.
its a pretty hard core blow, especially to the fans...
but this is just a reocurring event in a string of canceletions of dreamwave titles, to what reason, i've yet to know, but i can only hope for the best of those cats and that i can continue to work with them in some form or fashion in the future.
i've been told, like peter david, that the series will return hopefully next year. but that is indefinite. and although it may return, i doubt i will be apart of that. it's been suggested, that Pat Lee would be the possible candidtae for penciler should the series returns...
and for peter david's clarity, issue #8 is actually finished.
what they do with that remains to be seen.
in anycase, i had to keep it on the humble until its been confirmed. i was told yesterday , i had no idea when pAD was gonna be informed. i had a great run on the series with him, and i do agree with him and feel similar in terms of what my initial expectations of what TMNT run with my approach and what one of my teen hood favorite writers would conceive together.
it didnt turn out as i or PAD had expected
i had a fun on the run, and hopefully, i can get an opportunity to work with peter david again.
in terms of why it hasnt done well, theres a number of reasons i can guess
but my guesses are as good as yours in certain departments, and in others i cant quite speculate on at this moment.
thoughts?

On the bright side, I'll be able to pick up the new Mirage and Tales lines now... 3 comics a month was going to be a bit much, 'specially since I don't have a job.

Dreamwave, Dreamwave, Dreamwave. What the hell? Apparently, Dreamwave thinks they are Marvel or something. Here is a list of how the first five issues sold . . .
#1 32273
#2 22371
#3 21319
#4 19467
#5 19071
Those are actually orders placed through Diamond. I don't know if the Dreamwave TMNT series was sold on newstands/grocery stores/whatever, but it should have been. If so, the numbers are really a lot higher. Also, you'll note that the dropoff between issues 4 and 5 is negligible, which I believe indicates that the sales were about to level off and the series would have gone on in the 18,000-19,000 range.
It's nice to see Dreamwave exhibiting such a low level of commitment to their creators and readers. It is a shame about the first four issues and unless LeSean chimes in we won't know whose decision it was to make them all adaptations. I got the feeling that Peter David was about to swing off into uncharted territory and introduce us to a whole new universe, much like Chris Allan did with the Archie series.
Anyway, what Dreamwave is doing is really typical of the last few years: start a NEW series with a HOT, NEW artist, then ride that a little bit until it dies down. Next summer, I'm pretty sure they WILL re-launch their TMNT series, definitely starting over again with a NEW #1 and with a HOT, NEW artist. Yes, LeSean mentioned Pat Lee might be handling the art, and that's the other big hype convention; recruit big-name artist that hasn't done much over the last couple of years and announce him as the new regular artist on a series, then he does like three issues and a new guy comes in. Whichever rip-off hype scam Dreamwave is pulling doesn't matter, it stinks.
At least the series put LeSean in the spotlight and I know we all wish him the best of luck.

Wow this sucks.
I have to agree with Peter David though, I think the first 4 issues being retellings of the cartoon hurt the serious. If they would have jumped right into new stories I think it might have turned out a little different.
LeSean you did great work, and I as a fan really appreciate your communication with us. If you become attached to anything else please let us know here and we will gladly support you. Right guys?

Ah crap! Thanks for coming and talking to us about it LeSean, sad to know that you most likely won't be the penciler if it returns. Perhaps it's money saving to have the boss do it?
Anyway, sales are everything, as in all industries, and comics is one that copped a big kick in the head a while back and hasn't recovered. And when you're trying to run a business, being constantly in the red just to keep a series going is self defeating and will ultimately lead to the demise of your company.
I think they definitely made a mistake with tying the first four issues to the cartoon, as non-cartoon watchers such as myself found it disorienting. Perhaps if it had started as another entirely original series, things would be better.
In any case, do write letters people, but take heed - be civil. Letters full of abuse will only land in a bin, and will not help convince the company to pick up the series again. Keep a level head and some maturity.
If they start it up again, I'll buy it, no offense to LeSean either. Hope to see your fab art around the place in the future.

True that you can't really understand the first 4 issues unless you've seen the eps. But the retelling of the first few eps in the first few issues is not unheard of. I think it's fine the way they started it out. That's how Archie started out with TMNT, and they were sucessful. Till they got their audience, then they started spurring off into a new direction with new stories. And DW seemed they were starting to do that, I'm surprized they cancelled right when the new stories started coming out.

12-09-2003, 10:32 PM
Well, I am unhappy. This is not the news that I wanted to hear on a day like this.
Really, this seed was planted when the first issue sold out and they said that there would not be a reprint. PAD even said so himself soon after the first issue was released. Who's going to buy a series if they can't find the first issue?
But really, what they needed to do all along was get the books into the hands of kids. Put less consentration of the self-serving "comic book market" and get on to the news stands, get into the toy stores, and make 'em cheep. Dreamwave has been talking about doing this for a long time, but it's easier said than done. Stores don't really want to sell a comic for 4-5 dollars. They don't make a whole lot of money on each sale. The key, then, is to sell the collected books, because stores can make more. But, the Trade has just come out recently so, I guess they didn't really give the book a chance.
I don't want to blame Dreamwave though. They're good people and they're fans just like all of us. Living so close to their offices, I had hoped to get a chance to work with them, but commitments with school along with pain in my drawing wrist have been derailing the path to that goal for far too long. I hope that this is not the last we see of TMNT with Dreamwave.

Truth be told, I wasn't digging the comic, it wasn't telling the story I wanted as a reader, though I did enjoy the Casey issue. As a Casey fan it was nice to get into his head. I was really looking forward to the Turtlenator story, looked more like the classic MetalHead action figure then the stupid video game Turtle Bot (don't get me started on that  ) I also really enjoyed the exaggerated animation styled art by LeSean. I hope they at some point get the Turtlenator story told!
If they want to boost comic sakes they should make mini comics and package them with the toys classic MOTU style! Adversities that 1-800-comic locator (or whatever it's called) and the comic, and I think kids would think twice about spending that extra money on a pack of yu-gi-hoe cards ;)

This is dissapointing news all right... the TMNT is going strong, so something bad had to happen, huh? Now I guess I will have to track down the issues i missed (#1, 4, and 5) in order to read "new" DW stories.
This had to happen right when Tales was about to come out too... three TMNT books out at once= too good to be true. This was a very distinct tmnt comic, unlike any other... rest in peace, DW TMNT.
That's rather upsetting, actually. The first four issues weren't much better than average, but the last couple (5 and 6) were actually quite good. PAD had some creative control and was able to get a strong feel for his own little TMNT world, and I rather enjoyed it.
At the same time, though, I realize how DreamWave's been floundering as a publisher lately. Mega Man, another franchise title they publish, was recently canceled after #4, in a similar manner. More stories were on the way, the the DreamWave execs decided to 'suspend' them 'for the time being'. (Although, Mega Man suffered from some terribly mediocre writing.)
Either way, having more and more of your few titles canceled is never a good thing for a publisher, whether it be due to low sales (though I thought TMNT was doing well?) or lack of organization. I rather like DreamWave, and I hope they get their stuff in order, because things at the moment aren't looking too hot.

i got no dollars, and i can't get any, there are some unsolved pollitical issues in this country and dollars can't be found anywhere, and i doubt they accept Bolivares, and how would i pay them? there is no pay pal in here, i know there is something called moneygramm, plus and i don't have a credit card, and if i had, my mom wouldn't let me use it on the ineternet, plus the shipping. I was thinking yesterday about running the risk of buying it but there is still the question: how.

I'm not enjoying this news. While I haven't been digging the story all that much I thought LeSean's art was nothing short of amazing. I was hoping the series would take a positive swing with the Turtlenator story arc, but instead it fell apart all together. It's kind of a good news bad news for me thought. One less comic means I won't have to spend extra when Tales comes out next year. What with Sonic, 2 Spider-Man comics, the Mirage TMNT series, Venom, and random other comics I was scrounging for money by the time the last comic of the month came out.

DreamWave is obviously a very troubled company. Street Fighter hasn't ALSO been canceled has it? I sure hope they get their act together.
I am SERIOUSLY going to miss this comic. I almost don't want to say it, but it was becoming my favorite TMNT Universe. Gritty and serious like Mirage, but with the Pizza, lovable characterizations and humor of the first movie. This was the only reason I made the trek to my comic shop once a month; it's a serious blow.
As to all the guys saying " I won't buy it if LeSean isn't on it", come on. LeSean was great, but that isn't exactly the kind of support that will give this thing a fighting chance at coming back.

Street Fighter isn't Dreamwave. It's UDON, published by Image for now, but soon UDON will be leaving Image and will publish Street Fighter with Devil's Due, who publish GI Joe, Micronauts, and Voltron, among others.
Dreamwave isn't a troubled company. Transformers is doing very well for them. It's the comic book industry, as a whole, that is troubled.

Hehe thats funny; you're totally right. I have and have read every issue, I don't know how that got by me. I guess I figured Megaman=Capcom, Street Fighter=Capcom... man I need my head checked :).
And yeah I totally agree that the comic industry is troubled. But theres no doubt that DreamWave is a stranger in a strange land. Transformers is all they got... they have to be struggling. It is like they're dancing on a hot plate.

PAD"
THEN WHAT IS THIS SUPPOSED TO MEAN [check the writing with fat letters]
But hey thanks for calling me stupid. i liked that part, even though you can't spell

Maybe i was being a little too ironic before. SORRY :(

PizzaPower, I don't want to see you talk to anyone like this again. Next time you insult someone like this, it'll be a warning.
Yea, no need to get testy here....i thought it was a good question to ask myself...but yea, it looks like it probably wont be published- ever...unless the cartoon can blow up some more and take over the airways like back in the day !!! But man, what a loss....at least Mirage is still doin strong (knocks on wood...)

Just an OT aside though - are you loving the DW Jae Lee TF-GI Joe stuff as much as me? That WWII setting is bitchin' (Ironhide = tank, woo!), and the art is awesome. I can't remember if I picked up the poster of one of the covers that they did or not, but I really like this series. What's the other one like? I haven't been following it.

hehe, thats not what i mean. i dont mind a comic that makes you think with an intriguing plot line. i just mean the panels dont flow well to me. like in issue #3, i had to study the page to find out who was blown up: ravage or snake eyes or the other guy. plus how it happened exactly was hard to see.

The Image one is okay story-wise, I guess. But I think the artwork for it is too 'superhero generic'. The TF's are sometimes hard to identify, if not have these funky looking fleshy faces with tiny optics. And over-exaggerated action-line curves! Arr... but that's just my opinion...

Ahh.. better clarification. I will agree that #3 was confusing too. Like how the Aerialbot came out of no where, then dissapears just as fast. But the first two issues had made sense to me. I'm not gonna gripe about it if #4 is put together better.
But... as we were, with DW canceling the TMNT... :goofygri:

>>What's the [Image GIJoe/TF] like? I haven't been following it.>>
Josh went ahead and decided that teaming up Joes and Cybertonians wasn't a daunting enough task. He tried to rewrite the origins of major characters like Snake-Eyes, bring back dead guys like Quick Kick, *and* rehash the plot of Dreamwave's G1 miniseries (Transformers enslaved by Cobra instead of that arms dealer guy).
The result is that, within what seems like days or weeks of GIJoe's creation, they've taken on aliens from another world, a terrorist group with powerful robotic technology, *and* befriended a couple of "good guys" who willingly freed the Decepticons from enslavement! Its a terrible jumble of half-plots that has only served to get to the "big brawl" that spent 3 issues getting built up just for a quick two-issue conclusion.
Like the regular Joe series, it's far too cluttered, and reeks way too much of "I'm a fan, and this seems COOOOOOL to me", whereas the Dreamwave book tries pretty damn hard to remove itself from expalnation and previously endlessly-debated fan-made "What-ifs" and just tells this moody, fantastical tale that no one questions is an elseworld series.
Josh has the Image crossover so closely related to the regular line that people have been wondering if he intends to reboot the Joe continuity using this as a stepping stone. That's when you know you've built up too much backstory/exposition for an alternate universe miniseries.

Like I said before, only thing that could work would be a well organized snail mail campaing, but if 20 0000+ sales are not enough for DW, I think it's a lost cause.
But I've really grown to love LeSean's art on the books, I'm hoping he could pencil an issue of the Tales book in the future... I'd love to see how he draws Mirage TMNT.

I was thinking about this cancellation just recently, and I realized that DW is cancelling at the wrong time. Will it relaunch? Quite possibly if the TMNT are successful on Cartoon Network. Should it? Well, it would be cool, but running the first 4 issues in accordance with the cartoon really must have hurt the series. Not only can you just watch the cartoon, but that story was done already. I'd rather see something really new and out of sync with the Mirage volumes. Restart a whole new story based on the TMNT characters. Then, you can introduce new characters. You can even go as far as making adult themed stories that older fans crave. Sort of like starting a different TMNT universe, completely unrelated to Eastman and Laird's TMNT universe. An original TMNT series that is parallel to Mirage would open up new possibilities, such as a different series of TMNT figures from a different company, a different show, completely different look and color concepts. The possibilities are endless. The money would be there too, because the younger fans would have the cartoon and Playmates toys, and the older fans would have something that could relate to their age group. So that would take the competition away from having two TMNT worlds. Think about it.

Let me guess, you didn't like it because it didn't have R&B, other random mutants and Krang?
It took way to long get anywhere! The first 2 issues should have retold the story through Leo's (issue one) and then April's perceptive up to the end of Attack of the Mousers without all that dream sequence, pointless Eastman cop and Baxter taking us so much space. I didn't really like the comic until issue 4 and on. the upcoming Turtlenator story is EXACTLY what I want to see, updates of classic characters like the old Metal Head. It sucks that we won't be seeing that :(

as seen in the link, it appears that DW still slates issue #8 of TMNT to see print (usually the last week of the month) this month.
wether thats just a typo (because they are pretty slow when it comes to updating their website often) is unsure. Also, the fact that dreamwave hasnt officially announced that TMNT has been canceled (it baffles me too) on their website yet also clouds things.
i will keep you posted if i hear anything from DW for those still looking for issue #8
