View Full Version : Anyone think Leonardo is Japanese?

Leonardo is probably the most Asian/Japanese of all the Turtles. He trains the hardest, seems to have the strongest sense of honor and bushido. Looks up to Master Splinter the most and is the most all around balanced Turtle in nearly all incarnations.
Like most Asians, Leonardo is good at martial arts and is very studious, not goofing off as much as his brothers. He is also reasonably intellectual. He feels like the model Asian son to an Asian family.

You (pretend to) have a very inaccurate and compartmentalized understanding of human beings... though I use the word "understanding" lightly.
Uh, no... I think he's an adopted mutant Turtle who simply embraces and is interested in his adopted heritage via the man-turned-mutant he calls Father. Or via the rat that was owned by a Japanese man, but honestly I think the other makes more sense for Leo's interest in human stuff like culture, etc.

Leonardo's behavior in most series, especially 4kids, Nick, IDW, Mirage, the original movie trilogy and Archie all give the impression of an Asian Japanese martial artist.
He acts like an Asian, behaves like an Asian, and has honor like an Asian. Like everything about Leonardo is Asian.

Should I screen cap that comment and get the opinion for you of an Asian woman who has been a close friend since we were 10?
Leo has never reminded me of her... But I don't tend to make such broad generalizations of people.
Edit: Having any honor as a person is not exclusive to being Asian. So you have none? Or do you just not really grasp what it means.

Based on Splinter's ethnicity and culture... Well then it would be just as valid and make as much sense to say human Leo (and the other three) could just as well look Native since they originate from a turtle species native to the U.S.; may we well transition to humans also native to the region then.
edit: Although come to think of it, there are a couple blue-eyed instances that could arguably have him presented as a white guy. Sure, blue eyes isn't impossible in other races, but pretty rare as a genetic mutation. Had OotS really gone for it... who knows.

There's no option for "They're turtles and don't have a race, and also the whole "x-coded" thing is complete bulls**t" but that would be my answer to this and any question like it.

Leo is definitely not Asian, he has shown zero interest in math or ping-pong.

Doesn't call his brother Laphael, either.

Leo: “We are Asian!”
Mikey: “Asian? We’re Italian, dude!”
Splinter: “You’re f***ing turtles!”

I always think Leo are best suited for deal with occult, archeology because he always had some spiritual talent. He or Donnie was always the first to learn inner power/ki or other magic stuff. The difference is in the way they handle magic. Donnie may tries to apply scientific theories to magic just like hermetic mage form Shadowrun. Leo is more like a shaman and a yamabushi/monk, more eastern religions and animistic style.
I mean if you are going with the stories where the Turtles mutate because the Ooze mixes with Yoshi's DNA, wouldn't the Turtles all be part Japanese?

Good question. That and putting maple syrup on pancakes or waffles is definitely probably acting Canadian. Although the Canadian/Asian line gets blurry depending on WHAT specific species of maple trees we're talking about...

This is how Leonardo would look if he were human.
In my ongoing comic, I made Leo mutate into a human being and I based him on the actor Hiroki Narimiya.
ajAJsqFVkvo
The reason being the scene at around 11 minutes 42 in the movie Azumi.
Narimiya plays the guy who, after receiving the order from the sensei, is the first to draw his sword and do as he was ordered.
In my story, Leo is conflicted by him now having a future in Japan as the new head of the Foot Clan and his roots as a New York native.
So is Shredder's helmet a piece of bling? this is a weird question. If you prefer the IDW origins, then yes, he and his brothers are Asian.

No they're not. They're turtle. If I'm a reincarnation of a squirrel from 300 years ago that doesn't make me a squirrel now. It doesn't even make me a squirrel a little bit. They'd only be Japanese if they were, like, Japanese mata mata turtles.
Which are really interesting look turtles, by the way. Imagine what a mutant mata mata turtle would look like.

My mother once asked me "aren't they(the ninja turtles) Japanese?"
Well they've been raised by a Japanese man who turned it o a rat, or the rat pet of a Japanese man depending on the version you saw/read. So they definitely been influenced by Japanese culture to some degree. Perhaos Leonardo more than his brothers. But I still wouldn't call him Japanese.
I think the Turtles are simply Americans. It's a country of immigrants, so them being raised by a Japanese rat doesn't mean anything when their nativ language is English and they don't act any different from other American teenagers.
