View Full Version : [Question] So what keeps the forum going?

I'm kinda confused what keeps this place running year after year, since I don't believe this is a free message board. I've seen several forums die in my day since the owner either lost interest or it wasn't worth it for them to keep paying for it month after month.
Like, we already know Shredder is long gone and Krang only appears once every third blue moon, but I mean.... are they somehow still footing the bill?
Did Krang pay some sort of 20-year or so payment in advance so the forum would continue to go even after they've all but lost interest in it?

I'm assuming the cost to keep this place running is extremely minimal, or else it would have been shut down by now. The forums of course are far less active than they used to be since all the older fans are now 40+ year olds and moved on with their lives or lost interest in Turtles.
And besides that there isn't much to talk about right now since the current state of the franchise is in a lull. Most of the activity ended when the 2012 cartoon finale happened.
These boards run on vBulletin and they charge a monthly fee. My understanding is that you can have a 25 gb plan for $19.95 a month and it goes up from there.
I have a website myself and before that have done online publishing via PDF going back to 2002, so I always have appreciation for guys that absorb the costs of fansites like this one where other people surely benefit from it's existence more than the person who created it.
And the other side of it is that forums and websites were typically set up by people who worked in computers or programming to begin with, so those guys commonly made enough money at their day job to support the monthly fees without an issue. I stumbled through the setup of my own sites myself using templates and a meager understanding of HTML without a programming background, so I have real respect for guys with those skills who clearly set this stuff up back when it was all budding and new.

I own and run two vBulletin boards. There is a monthly fee you can pay to run them or just a flat fee to have them forever, but your license eventually expires and you can't update (like what happened here). Beyond that you just have to pay for the domain which is around $10-20 a month depending.

I imagine vbulletin as a whole will shut down eventually, not many people are hosting their own forums in 2023. When that happens we'll see the end of individual forums like this one. When all of fandom these days are on twitter, reddit and youtube, forums are basically a ghost town or a relic of 30-40+ year olds who visit from the early 2000's.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone was footing the bill and this was one of multiple websites on his account...and just forgot we were still active here on the account.

There's still plenty of company websites that use vBulletin as a message board or "community." It's just fallen out of popular use for fandoms.
Krang hasn't forgotten about anything. I'm sure he pays for the server space which is probably about $10 a month, pays for the domain name which is like $15 a year, and has to be at least peripherally aware of the board or new users wouldn't be coming in (he's the only one who can approve).

Idk, it could be nostalgia or just that it's easier to find out about new upcoming Turtles stuff. It's pretty cool how long this place has been around for.

Maybe this place is not as crowded as it was but I keep finding new threads and new posts everyday whenever I check it. That's all I need. A ghost town? A relic? I don't think so. I've seen places way more empty than this.

The sole purpose of the forum may have died but the forum itself hasnt. Theres always something to talk about.

Considering we now have threads asking if you believe in evolution of the human race, I think this forum has pretty much run its course.

I only miss the creativity. And creative fan minds. The fan art and fanfic, however weird it may have been. I wish I could just say "oh, it's moved to this other social media thing" but it really hasn't. Maybe small bits. But not like it was. It's like a hole in people years ago is now filled by... other stuff. Other proclivities. A lot of them not great ones.
There's more fan art than ever before, communities are thriving. The discussions, hardcore fans, projects are all shining more than ever. They just aren't using forums that's old tech only a niche few still use. Fandoms are just on Discord, Reddit and Twitter. This isn't something new, it's been discussed in other threads here at least 5 years ago, you might like an AM/FM radio but don't wonder why all the cool people are now listening to spotify.
Users that post here is out of habit and to debate politics since no one else likely wants to hear them rant for hours. It's definitely not for indepth TMNT discussion, the few users who register are usually trolls or banned accounts and the very very few new users see there's not much worthwhile and dont become new regulars. It's likely not too expensive for Krang to keep it running and he likes that he has a site that has users and has been active for 2 decades. If he cared more about the community he would've upgraded it, continued to be a part of the community. I mean he cares enough to pay the bill but not enough to invest time in it. Many forums that went offline could've kept with a very small user base like the technodrome has if the administrator had continued to pay the bill. I mean how many regular users does this forum have? Two dozen?

I used to think it was because this was a tight knit community with lots of people who have been here for years. But, at this point in time, most of the veterans have given up on this place already. Even those who swore they'd be here forever.
You also gotta keep in mind that the forums increased their activity around 2012-2014 when the 2k12 series and the first Bay Turtles film came out. Rise got cancelled after what, 1 or 2 seasons? Clearly wasn't that big. What do we have left now? Wheb I joined this place in early 2009, it was kinda dead as well due to the 2k3 series nearing its end and the future of the property looking dim.
Unless something big TMNT related comes out again in the next few years, the forums won't get any new blood. Plus, forums are a dying format, sadly. People under 25 prefer places like Reddit, Twitter and Instagram nowadays.
I imagine vbulletin as a whole will shut down eventually, not many people are hosting their own forums in 2023. When that happens we'll see the end of individual forums like this one. It will all come around again. People will continue to migrate to social media platforms and eventually those will be gate kept or moderated through an extreme ideology (like what happened to Twitter before Musk cleaned house).
Once that happens the pendulum will swing back to privately held forums and groups and so on.
Capitalism is routinely the great equalizer - ever shifting and moving according to behavior changes and correction.

I don't think the younger generation is ever coming back to forums. If one social media platform fails, they just move on to the next one. Tumblr was big a few years ago, now instagram is equally huge. And twitter and reddit remain popular.

I've become more of a lurker than a poster of late, but I do visit just about everyday. I've been a member of the forum for nearly 20 years, and visiting it has always just been a part of my "internet routine." I post less these days because I have less to contribute. I don't care for much of what Nickelodeon is doing/has done with the brand since they ended their first animated show, and I feel like i've said (at least most of) what I have to say about the turtles, what they mean to me, and how 1990 still kicks everything else to the curb (IMHO).
I'm glad the forum is still going, and seems to be going strong. There are fewer and fewer places like this where I feel comfortable opening up at all without getting trolled to death. Whatever the case may be concerning whoever runs/operates/pays for all this, I'm glad that they do.
Long live Krang, and long live the Technodrome!

Well said. My sentiments are similar. I don’t follow the new stuff and have little more than a passing interest in it. I don’t really collect anything anymore. I’m rarely inclined to post or comment. But visiting these forums has been something I’ve done steadily for almost 2 decades.

I rarely if ever post in many of the TMNT sections. Not because I've grown out of the franchise, I just prefer the original cartoon and have the occasional good memory of the 4Kids version. Every other TMNT thing didn't do it for me...and I'm one of a select few number who did like Out of the Shadows but that's largely in part to my FW bias.
I'm glad the IDW Saturday Morning comic is continuing and the FW 'toon will be profiled by that with new adventures going forward (even if it isn't a continuation of the red sky, which would have been bolder...maybe eventually),
I enjoy the discussions we have today on other topics, politically charged or otherwise, they're varied, raw, and wild. There's no filter, and I feel you kind of need that in the world because that shows how different and independent we all are in regards to how we live by our own code and creed. It's refreshing.
I've actually been going back and seeing how people reacted and posted over the 2000s and 2010s...I'm cringing at my past posts and behaviour. I was an a-hole...think I might still be one, but I was much, much worse back then. A 20-something body with the mind of a twelve year old. i have people blocked that I can't even remember blocking also

i guess i would count as part of the TMNT creative community, and i still do TMNT creative endeavors, but i stopped posting here quite awhile ago. i'll chime in as this seems like a remotely appropriate time for it. this place is pretty dire these days. i read it a few times a week a little bit, just to see how unhinged y'all are about what minor nothing subject this time. sometimes i'll click on a seemingly neutral thread just to see how many posts it takes for something racist or transphobic etc to get posted. often, it's right there in the initial post. y'all have become a bunch of facebook boomer style alt-right weirdos. everything posted here now is culture war ******** and celebrity deaths. why would anyone who's into TMNT even want to post here? have fun, i suppose, you got the place to yourselves now.
TMNT seems like a weird fandom to cause hatred of The Other to me, i dunno what's up with how y'all think anymore. perhaps consider some of the themes of TMNT, like found family and the cycle of revenge. might want to consider some introspection and rethinking of how you came to believe these things you talk about endlessly, maybe who would benefit from you thinking that way. you can still fix your hearts if you want to. do you really see a mutant turtle who has to live as an outcast as someone who would hate on others for what they are? i wouldn't.
i'm sure you will have plenty of wonderful things to say about this post. knock yourselves out.
Shredder is long gone and Krang only appears once every third blue moon
The turtles fought hard for getting rid of the menaces shredder and krang, so no complaining now please about here being a peaceful place :tgrin:

Seems to still be true. We need the forms to be a place to celebrate and talk TMNT, not bicker about the news.

Seems to still be true. We need the forms to be a place to celebrate and talk TMNT, not bicker about the news.
Which is why we need more actual good things related to the TMNT, and not stuff that only a shill would love. Like a more bad-ass Mirage-Style theatrical movie that brings a bit more seriousness to the brand the way Tim Burton did in an Adam West era.
I mean, look at the games. Do you see any negative talk or 'culture war' stuff when talking about the Cowabunga Collection or Shredder's Revenge.
When they announced the Last Ronin game, you don't exactly see a lot of people getting mad and saying 'AWW **** NOT A GAME ABOUT THIS ****' or whatnot.
There's also general excitement about whenever a new NECA figure is announced. Or announcing the re-release of the 2K3 series on BluRay and so forth.
Make good stuff, and we're happy. Make bad stuff and we're not. It's not that complicated and it's not that deep.

Yea the forums is dead lately, I still come and lurk but rarely say anything. For me it's just nostalgia, although I would mostly participate in the TV and movies discussions much more a couple years back. I'm not a social media person. And I'm an old soul, so coming here is somewhat comfortable and feels like home. I do miss how alive it used to be though.
Which is why we need more actual good things related to the TMNT, and not stuff that only a shill would love.
There's a well-received decade+ long ongoing comics series running with monthly supplemental issues coming out alongside it, an ongoing based around the Fred Wolf cartoon, The Last Roninverse which sells like crazy and is hyped up, a successful movie currently in theaters, animated movies and TV series coming out on Paramount+, and sooooo many action figures from NECA, Playmates, etc. Last Ronin game coming, Shredder's Revenge is super popular, the Cowabunga Collection.... There's a lot of Turtles coming out now, more than at almost any other time I can think of in the last 20 years. No one will love everything, but everyone coming to a TMNT forum should love at least some of it, or why come?

And you'd think that would be enough. However, as was mentioned before, other social media platforms have taken the bulk of the interest. Message boards were, arguably, the impetus of social media. But, as the tech evolves (or devolves, depending on your perspective), that's where the audience goes.
Also, we need to keep in mind that this place is called, "The Technodrome," referring to the '80s cartoon. As time goes on, the initial fans of that show will be absent due to various life circumstances and if they try to come back during retirement age, will this place still be here? Sure, the forums have had their revivals and renewals with each fresh iteration of the franchise, but will this particular site be a go-to point in the future, given the name it has? Will younger generations be here when searching for places to talk turtles, if Google is gracious enough to list it on the first page?
I think what needs to happen is an overhaul of the forums themselves. Krang needs to come back, mods need to be notified, and sub-forums need to be scrubbed and rules enforced. We don't necessarily need this place to be Ninja Turtles only, but random, rampant threads on certain topics need to be avoided or, at the very least, under severe scrutiny. That would mean highly active moderators like back in the beginning and better screening of members.
If this place is to survive another 20 years (if any), the grit and grime needs to go.

1. Creating less conversation does not create more conversation. If someone leaves the forums because of "conversation they don't like" rather than just going into the Ninja Turtles threads themselves, then the problem is them, not the forums.
2. None of the extraneous conversation has stopped basically any of the Ninja Turtles conversation and therefore does not infringe on the forums but rather enhances it
3. "Screening members" as you seem to have implied it is nothing more than a cancel culture action; outside of eliminating bots which we don't really have a problem with here.
Basically your fixes don't all sound like genuine forum improvements but more like "elimination actions" for things that you might not personally enjoy.
Using words like "Severe scrutiny" on a Ninja Turtles forum only reinforces what people think of this fandom in the first place.

1. No, these forums need to be an environment free of vitriol and spite so that conversation, no matter the capacity, is as healthy as possible. If someone leaves the forums because the conversation has become toxic, the problem is the forums not being modded so the toxicity can be contained or removed.
2. I didn't say that the General Discussion needs to be removed, but scrubbed clean and organized. Krang tried to get rid of them and it didn't go well, so he brought them back with heavy moderator activity and it was fine.
3. My implication of screening members is to make sure banned ones don't return with a new account. Krang did this by checking IP addresses of new members and prevented their return.
The GD forums are great; it's a place to take a break from turtles and talk to other members about outside topics. But if those topics create division and cause insults, then they should be removed and avoided in the future. If these topics are to remain a fixture here, then they need to be under heavy supervision by an active moderator, hence the term, "severe scrutiny." This has worked in the past and it can so now.

You know, I really liked this follow-up and I am tracking with and understand a lot of what you are saying here - probably most of it actually.
Here is the most confounding issue though - the "toxicity" part. This is easy to say - it rolls off the tongue and it's hard to disagree with because it is a fundamental truth - toxic people and toxic environments are generally bad. Easy mental algebra there.
But here is the problem - the complexity of "toxicity" when measured against weaponized language and manipulation. For example, when people call you an "istaphobe" because you vote for a guy, I would assert the argument that the actual toxic people there are the "istaphobe" flingers. "Toxicity" has largely become nothing more than a pathway to silence people you don't like.
Problem number 2 with the sounds-good-but-is-nonsense-toxicity position - say you have a person who solicits an idea. The idea is pushed back on for whatever reason. That person leaves because the environment is "toxic" by their perception. But their idea which received significant pushback was the impetus for the communication. The person is not equipped for the pushback so instead relies on the "this place is a toxic echo chamber" and leaves. But by your logic, if someone leaves due to toxicity, the problem is the place and need for moderation.
It's a bull$#!( concept. It's a manipulative concept. People didn't like the movie "The Last Jedi". Hollywood marketers and employees didn't own up to it, but relied on shaming tactics calling the fanbase "toxic".
It's a bull$#!( concept weaponized by the evil, the weak and the ill-equipped probably 90% amidst the 10% that might be universally valid.
I just want to point out the depth of our conversation here and note that I'm not saying that you yourself are "evil, weak and ill-equipped" simply for presenting the blanket concept. Instead, I'm saying that people easily fall into the "virtue trap" (Toxicity is BAD!) at almost total disregard for the fact that the truly toxic people are usually the ones who weaponize words like "toxic" and "echo chamber" as a method of control, a method of tantrum-throwing, and a method of social-manipulation-for-vengeance.

Word salad.
Politics have always been dicey subjects. It leads to inappropriate responses at best. People tend to toss aside civilized or constructive conversations for name calling and insults.
Your focus on the word toxic is strange. KROW is from a time before buzz words. I'm certain he isn't referring to it in the same context as you.
The forums had strict rules regarding certain subjects for the very reason of things getting out of hand. They also didn't allow people to continue to participate in incendiary conversations in general. It didn't stifle conversations, it didn't ruin the forums. In fact, most of us were pretty close knit and are life time friends because we could participate without being flamed for our opinions.
I don't think what KROW is proposing is that farfetched, unless you thrive on drama.

Oh, if only we could completely ban all political discussion of any kind, regardless of there being politics now (from one side) in everything entertainment and that doing so would only make the board a left wing echo chamber, by default. Yes, it would be great to see 2 or 3 people come back and share their thoughts on Mutant Mayhem or the new Mondo figure or something.
I mean, if we want to come to a middle ground where it's "no political threads" but if there is material in a movie or comic or whatever that does happen to veer into the political realm (whether its identity politics or you name it), we are allowed to discuss it and debate, eh, fine. OK, I guess. But the whole idea of sound-minded people out there, ex-Dromers I think we're talking about, people now in their 30s and 40s or above who are honestly sitting there going, "Even the EXISTANCE of these threads on that board in subforums I don't visit makes it a toxic place, so I won't touch it!" is pretty laughable on its face.

It was already said if you're so "triggered" by politics don't enter the conversation. Not everyone agrees on everything and if your not intelligent enough to defend your views, that's on you. Bow out with grace, but the problem is the left can't. They have to state nonsensical statements that prove thier ineptitude to honestly debate facts. Tier 1 thinkers vs tier 2 thinkers.

We've had middle ground here before. When they were brought back, political threads were watched carefully so things didn't get out of hand. What appears to be happening now is that they just become a stagnant back-and-forth containing the usual talking points, going off-topic and nothing gets resolved -- an echo chamber of a different sort, if you will. That's akin to what occurs on Twitter/YouTube and it doesn't belong here.
And I understand how topics can bleed into other media, as exhausting as it gets. Talking about it is fine, but when it overtakes the thread it should really stop so the thread can stay focused on its original intent.
My whole point in my initial post here is that we need some level-headed, impartial, active moderators to keep threads on-topic and members civil. If so, then maybe more people will join and the boards can stay online.

Politics bleeds into everything. Not just specific threads or subforums. The problem with these discussions is often times people can't leave their vitriol or discourse in that place. People who can't be civil will drag that "beef" into other areas of the forum, weather they are left or right leaning.
So the solution may not be to eradicate it, but to moderate it so it doesn't devolve into insult and name calling and cause issues outside of political based topics.

Gestapos, you want secrete police huh? Guess who else loved secrete police?
Here we have the perfect example of how this starts to head downhill even though the rest of us are having a pretty civil conversation despite our clear differences in opinion.
Most have something to contribute, but not everyone knows how to maintain that.

Krang's participation is already at the bare minimum so the fact they even keep the server on despite their low engagement is already a big win for everyone, since they could stop at any time. But it's already been here for over 20 years, why not 20 more.
By the way, let's not forget this forum does have SOME ads... so the small amount of ads probably easily pays for the costs, maybe even a lot more than we think.
I hope Krang can get the motivation to move the forum to an updated software at some point, give us some new features to play with.

Just a public service reminder:
Film, animation at times, and tv shows (when feeling a bit daring), have had a history of social and political commentary for much of their existence.
You (a general "you," not specifically you Andrew) think they're only just now inserting it these days as some kind of new agenda? Take the blinders off.
Undoubtedly, some of today's viewers have counterparts of the 60s who were just as upset about the first(?) interracial tv kiss in Star Trek and what is was trying to say about that previous era of a continuously changing society. Yet to most that scene now looks like no big deal at all in hindsight.

Racist mutant rat, don't forget he hates people not like himself.
I post an articulate series of examples for the conversation and your best go-to is "word salad". You aren't having a conversation - you are trying to defeat a conversation. "Word salad".

The Boomers and their parents were the ones who started onscreen interracial kisses. The Millennials (people like Seth Rogen) are the ones who ship rodents with insects…and the ones who started sologamy. So yeah, the Boomers must be feeling pretty embarrassed right now.

Because your whole argument was essentially on the context or usage of one word. I feel like you articulated on the wrong thing here. We're not arguing the definition of toxic.
Let's replace the word with detrimental. The abusive language that often times accompanies political discussion is detrimental to the group as a whole. NOT because the subject itself is bad or taboo, but because it often produces intense emotional responses that many people don't seem to have control of.
The best way to combat that is having neutral or level headed parties moderate to be sure it stays civil. You are free to speak your mind, however, you are not free from the consequences. Without some sort of boundaries, how are we to "keep the peace"? That doesn't mean that every person to cry "offended" will be immediately taken at thier word. It just means that if someone continues to cross boundaries set, then threads will be locked and repeat offenders will have consequences.
Weather you agree or disagree on the method, tell me you don't agree with the basic idea of keeping things civil?

No, don't agree. This seems ridiculous. You're throwing out words like "boundaries" and "consequences" and I'm pretty much done. Based on what scale? Determined by whom? Particularly if we're talking about politically-fueled topics coming from politically-fueled topics from the media. This is a recipe to DOA this forum.

Exactly. He's just doubling down on his hater-demands and denying the conversation, opting instead for semantics. Discussing the perception and weaponization of "toxic people" is not semantics - it's behavioral.
But several people here don't want to admit that. You know why? Because they are the same $#!(bags who want to contextual weaponize the definitions for their own use. The true deplorables.

How is that a recipe for DOA when the forums ran perfectly fine prior to them allowing it? Most people conducted themselves and the place didn't require the amount of moderation it did once the wave of new members came in and started trashing and insulting existing members.
Like I said, my take is nothing necessarily off limits. I like most all forms of conversation to be open. However, certain people do not know how to conduct themselves when discussing these things.
Dpool is clearly one of them. Just spouting nonsense about secret police because he wants to continue to attack Bob Barker. ? He wants to stoke the fires because he doesn't agree.

We will clearly never agree. That's fine. It's not like any of these ideas will come to fruition with the original creator out living his best life (at least I hope he's doing ok) I guess mostly I'm just nostalgic for the kind, friendly and welcoming environment I joined so many years ago. It was refreshing to me to have that in a time where there wasn't much of that in my real world life.
This place holds a lot of sentimental value to me. I'm glad it's still here, even if I don't really like some of the things going on. It is what it is and I think it just reflects the world's climate right now. Lots of kind folks, and lots of pot stirrers.

You keep bringing up "trigger warning " like that was a thing back then. No. They just didn't tolerate people who were repeatedly bullying other members or breaking the forum rules. I don't know how on earth you think we had a "trigger warning" atmosphere when we had Voltron as a mod. Haha! Dude was abrasive at times and they allowed it, so it wasn't all that strict. There were several other like minded mods as well, so I'm not sure where you get they just ejected everyone for anything they didn't like.
Also, if that wasn't what you aligned with, then why did you stay? I'm sure there were and are other places that are more in agreement of you mindset than this place was at that time.

Did I miss the memo? Is attempting to be fair now a left movement or something? Treat others how you wish to be treated must be old time talk.

This is the issue with this place and it's shown clearly above. Certain users cannot post in any topic without it devolving into right-wing drivel. It wasn't like this before, we used to be able to discuss things in the 2012 days while staying on topic. Now every single thread is basically just a soapbox for "THE LIBERALLSSSS" speech, and I don't think your flimsy justification of "oh all media is woke so it's fair game" is justified either. None of this talk should ever leave the subforums; it's a Ninja Turtles forum but you wouldn't know that by the stuff that gets posted here.
The same can be said in the other direction. Can't discuss things without the libs being offended. So it's only OK if the Drome becomes a leftist echo chamber? Both sides are insane in their own way.
Coola Yagami
08-28-2023, 05:56 PM
For sure, so we need to keep it in the subforums and leave the TMNT threads to exclusively talk about TMNT. Even TMNT-related talk like what's found in the MM thread is less about the movie and more about some people's beef with the "politics" surrounding some creative decisions.
The real issue is that the rest of the TMNT fandom has moved elsewhere and the few users left here have more interest with political discourse than the current content. Which is fine, but doesn't help the legacy of what this place will be in a few years. New TMNT fans are not gonna come here, which might be a good thing to many of you, but the forum won't keep going if this direction continues.
Then tell modern day politics to stay out of Ninja Turtles. More fighting the Foot, less gender swaps and red caps.

I was being a bit facetious when I said that. I'm only responding to the fact that people who don't agree with "fair play" are typically, in my experience, far right leaning.
The left has ALWAYS stood out because extremists are always making some wacky claims. I won't dispute that....I've seen and read some things.
The right doesn't seem as silly in that respect, however I find they want this list of rules, but don't want rules. Tend to call anyone who doesn't think like them a sheep (which I find a bit ironic), but follow a politician off a cliff if his/her thinking alignment is similar to thier own.
The extremes on both ends are something I struggle to understand.
Most of all I just find it kind of sad that we'd rather fight each other for control of a country full of people we apparently don't even like? *shrug*

It's a weird divide, and it's hard to tell who is worse since the extremists get all the airwaves and speak the loudest. Well actually the right is worse since they banned abortion and are working their way to ban gay marriage.
I find the extremists on both sides to be insane, both are evil in their own way though the right seems more downright evil with their extremes. The evil side of the right wants to bring back racism and homophobia and whatnot, while the left, whether unintentional or not promote their own brand of racism and segregation but 'for the greater good'. The right is like 'we don't like them black folks' while the left is like 'we must speak, think and act on the behalf of black folks that are too ignorant to know any better'. Both sides are pushing it, and both sides are reducing people to the color of their skin.
But I digress. It's time we get back to Ninja Turtles. When I started this topic, I wasn't so much asking what kept this forums going as in 'there is barely any TMNT stuff to talk about', my question was more 'who's paying to keep the lights on if Shredder and Krang are long done'.
