The exact cost for each at Walmart was $9.97.
By me, the stores from highest priced figures to lowest are:
KB, TRU, KMART, Target, Walmart...
If you get them anywhere else, they could be more..maybe not...show knows....

Where's Mutatin' Splinter? They should definitely make him, since there's shredder and foot ninja. Even the old toyline had Mutatin' Splinter, but he mutated from a man to full grown rat. This new show is based on original comics, so he would mutate from regular rat to ninja rat Splinter, just like the turtles. Playmates better make him or that will suck.

Well, I think half the reason they made these toys again is because it had to have been really cheap to use the same molds from 10 or so years ago.
If they made a Splinter from the new toon, they'd have to spend money making a mold for it and what not. I can only see Playmates doing that if they decided to make a Mutations 2 line.

A lot of the new figures coming up are from old molds. It's brilliant strategy for Playmates. No new initial investment, minimal production cost, virtually 100% profit. Nice. And the new paint jobs on these mutation figures looks really great.

Vintage Splinter, what do you mean thats not cool? I'm not sure where you get your money to buy your TMNT figs but if I can buy some, and someone is willing to pay more for them, I don't see any problem with that one bit. Thats how I can buy the next series. They don't have to bid on my item. They know it soon will come in the stores, but if they want them early because it's not in their area, then they can buy them from me. The old figures were once bought in the stores, yes maybe 10 years ago, but isn't that still scalping them? Is there a rule somewhere where I have to let them sit in my attic for 9 years, then sell them? Plus, on eBay, TONS of people have auctions up for the new things too....

Scalping is when buy an item at retail price and then resell it for a profit. The term applies to collectable goods that are currently available in stores, usually goods that are newly availably. When you buy the new product from the store with the intention of reselling it, you are preventing a person from buying it at normal retail price. People are forced to pay the higher scalper prices because they can't find the product in the stores (because the scalpers bought them all). Is there a rule against scalping? No. But it is considered to be of very poor etiquite within the circles of collectors.
And yes, it is very uncool.

I truley don't understand, there was enough for me to buy one set to keep, one set to sell, and enough sets for other people to buy too, this is a super Walmart here. Ok then....
You quoted: "When you buy the new product from the store with the intention of reselling it, you are preventing a person from buying it at normal retail price."
Ok fine, then, I'm going to start a protest at all of the comic books stores that have figures for very high priced resale, then I'm going to e-mail the hundereds of Ebayers who are now selling 2003 TMNT items and recommend them to stop because it's not right.
Before I do that, maybe I should go to Walmart and buy all of the Mutations from them so no one else can buy them. Don't worry though, I will keep them in my attic for 10 years and then sell them (...What the other half of the Ebayer do when they sell vintage.) You must claim that to be ok, I'm NOT gonna resell them while they are still retail, I'm gonna buy them all so no one can get them but I will at least wait until the other stores quit selling them under retail, then I guess it should be proper etiquite within the circles of collectors. Am I making an scense here? Either way, it's the same thing.
Look at this guy...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3163302970&category=16 474&rd=1
He must have the worste etiquite EVER! With that price. Yes, that item is not retail anymore but he bought it from the store (I asked him). There was seriously one Scratch per every zillion (or so) stores. He obviously didn't play with it, he bought it so NO ONE else could, kept in storage, and now is selling for WAY over retail price. He couldn't help buying it where no one else could because there was hardly any Scratches. Maybe he should have bought it and cut Scratch into peices, distrubuting it to everyone in the toy aisle who wanted him, that would be fair then wouldn't it. In my case, there are still many Mutations everywhere else, I'm selling it so I can buy the next series with the profit from the previous series.

Big deal if Playmates has to put out extra money, since it's only for one out of the 7 mutatin' figures. They would definitely make a profit, not 100%, but still a profit. How cheap can they get? They know a Mutatin' Splinter would be great, so they should make a new mold for it.

There is a problem with it. You are taking figures from retail, that people could have purchased. Just to sell on Ebay and line your own pockets. It's called scalping, and is the #1 thing wrong with the action figure market right now. And no, it's not about the old figures at all. You are taking figures out of fellow collectors hands. Merely to profit on the sale. You're purposefully limiting the availability of an item in your area. Meaning the collectors there won't be able to buy it. It's unfair to your fellow collectors. In the case of the vintage days, there wasn't as big of a secondary market as there is now. There wasn't an internet that led to higher prices and inabilty for people to purchase the items in the store. Sorry, it's a case of scalping. If you were buying them to sell at cost to someone, it would be different. But you are taking advantage of the market, but buying something 'New' and re-selling it at an inflated rate. :)

Oh yea, gang up on me. What if the item I'm selling is going to someone who has not even barley seen the first series in their town or country? What if Playmates toys the, "Fat Cats," claim that there is no sales in those areas so they will give them the left over crap that Walmarts around here send to them? Maybe I'm doing something good out of this. Yes, maybe it's just going to someone who just wants the figures early, but why would someone pay more for the figures if they just want them early?
Notice on eBay that a great deal of the figures that are selling are sold to other countries where the country could be months behind on Turtle figures while Playmates collects $ on them in the big cities in the U.S. So to answer your question, yes, maybe I should sell them at cost then eh?
Ok, then qb101, maybe then if I should, I should then quit my job, so I can intercept all of their e-mails and start buying every Turtle toy here, just to send it to them all at cost. Heck, my water bill will be shut off, but at least the Mutations will get there for not a penny more than $9.97. Now, the only reason I sell the turles over cost is to simply help pay for the next series of the same molds that Playmates decides to repackage. (nothing to do with quiting my job, but I will if I should send everyone their fair share of Turtles which you all are so concerned about)
But of course, scalpers are ruining it for the U.S. toy collectors! You guys are right! Did you know that the vintage Turtles made over 2 billion in sales which at that time was only second to Disney? I didn't see any shortage of Mikey dolls, or let alone Turtles. Yes only a portion of that was credited toward figures, but it was the largest portion. So I guess scalpers ruined it good for Playmates and everyone else then too eh? Or how about now, those scalpers have killed the market for GI Joes or Star Wars figures, I never EVER sseen any of those figures on the shelves (being sarcastic). I'm getting sick of going to garage sales and seing those same TMNT figures over and over again, but I must be seeing things because the scalpers have all of the figures; ruining it for everyone.
Before we all know it, Playmates will be sending me and the thousands of others on eBay: "Please stop spending your money on our figures, if you do not comply, we will be forced to make more for the people who didn't get a chance to collect them. Take this as a threat to your local Walmart who will be stocked with ten more cases of figures tomarrow if you don't stop!"

Typical scalper defensive whining. You try to blame everyone but yourself for the reasons your scalping. Sorry pally, not working. I'm glad there's people with actual morals out there in the collecting community anymore. Shame it's got cancerious leisions like scalpers though, that are just in it to line their own pockets off people who can't get the figures due to the scalpers in their area that do the exact same thing. So feel free to defend yourself, you're only fooling youself. :)

Ok, I don't want to get involved too deeply with this whole "Scalping" issue, but I think you guys need to give E a break. I'm in Australia, and April and Hun have just hit the stores here. We are way off getting these mutations, and that's if we get them at all. And its not like he's selling them for 20 or 30 bux each. He is basically selling tham at cost. I really don't see the big deal, its not like he bought a case of each figure. He bought 1 extra set to help out someone who hasn't got them yet. He can hardly be blamed if the price rises because two bidders want them bad enough.
Just my two cents. :)
Okay, the scalper argument is not the topic of this thread, so it's gonna end now. If you want to make a new thread in Gen. Dis., go ahead.
Mutations figures: I found them at TRU, but didn't buy them. They do look cool, but since most of my toys just sit on my bookcase, I won't enjoy them fully, so I'm passing.

Vintage, typical "scalper" defence whining? Try typical "scalper" bashing! Your sitting here calling me a whiner, cancerious leisions, and with no morals? I'm not making fun of anyone, I'm just giving example on my side of the argument, not poking fun, real mature there guys. Please, lets not let this introduce any hard feeling either. Thank you to who all have seen my point of reason clearly, if not give me a PM too. Now Mutations....
kj6754, to answer your question, no they don't include a tiny Turtle, That would probably contradict the idea of them transforming into the turtles.
Also, if you guys hang your Mutations or other heavy figures up, here is a warning, I have had these hung on my wall since I first posted this message, and already, (since they are heavy) have already started a tiny indentation where the tac is, try having some sort of bottom support if any of you hang your Turtles.

That could be a temporary change, jsut so they can do some remodeling and such to the actual TMNT section.
OR....
TMNT is selling Bigtime. Bratz and Disney Princesses aren't. In order to attempt to sell less than popular toys, you surround a popular one with them, in hopes that while passing by, customers will see and take something from there...
Its all selling tactics....

Not to get off topic, I don't think teaming up on E-Money is good, and not saying people meant to. But I doubt he's a scalper. People at sports events and concerts selling tickets are like that. A dude who buys a set of turtles and plays with them, and buys another set that he wants to keep in the box, and decided, to hell with it, and sell a set. Its not that big a deal, Playmates gets their moneys worth, in turn gaining cash to make more figures. And maybe hes selling them for more because he had to pay a bit more. If you think hiking up prices is scalping, check out K B Toys.
Sorry, just think it needed to be said.
Other than that the figures look cool, even if they are the same body molds as the old figures. They worked then and why try to fix what isn't broken?

If you think hiking up prices is scalping, check out K B Toys.
Sorry, KB Toys is a retailer that orders directly from Playmates. Not an individual who buys a product from a store, simply with the intention of re-selling it to make money. Rebelscum puts it in simple terms. It refers to Star Wars figures, but fits for any currently available hot toy. :)
http://www.rebelscum.com/collect.asp
The Collect To Collect Code Of Honor
Collect to Collect is a program started by Mr. Philip Wise to promote the hobby of Star Wars collecting. The principles behind the Collect to Collect credo are two-fold: aid your fellow Star Wars enthusiast and discourage those who collect strictly for the sake of profit. Collect to Collect means doing your best to observe the following collecting etiquette:
- Buy only what you need and make sure others get one before you get many.
- Acquire pieces for your collection because you want them, not because you plan to profit from them.
- Help others achieve their collecting goals for the sake of the hobby, not profit.
- When you trade or sell available toys, do so at cost.
- When you trade or sell unavailable toys, do so keeping the golden rule in mind: you'll always win in the long run if you don't take advantage of people.
- Buy from scalpers as a very last resort. They exist because people buy from them and do not make collecting toys easier. Scalping only promotes decay within the hobby.
- Understand it is more important for a kid to have the toys than you; help them out whenever possible. You're likely to get another chance at the toy, he/she may not.
Collecting Star Wars toys means different things to different people. For some it may be one of each Star Wars action figure to play with, for others it may be two of each package and figure variation in the world. Either way, it's up to you. You don't have to agree with the collecting goals of others, but you should respect them.
What is "scalping"?
Toy scalping is an often misunderstood term within collecting. The simplest definition of scalping is:
Somebody who buys currently available toys from any source other than an authorized toy distributor or manufacturer, to sell at a profit.
Scalping is not about money or price. Scalping is about limiting the availability of toys, which in turn makes it both difficult and frustrating for collectors to complete their collections. Below are a few examples to make it easier to grasp the "scalping" concept:
Joe goes to Wal-Mart and buys five desirable figures for later resale at the local flea market where he charges $10.00 each. Joe is a scalper. Avoid Joe. The results of his actions means less desirable toys at the store, frustrated toy buyers and higher prices for everybody. The trickle down effect is enormous, even affecting how stores purchase the toys and Hasbro's distribution decisions.
Wal-Mart and FAO Schwarz both buy from Hasbro directly. Wal-Mart sells figures for $5.76 or less, and FAO Schwarz typically sells them for about $9.99. While FAO sells figures at a substantially higher price, neither of these companies is scalping. Neither company is making it more difficult for collectors to complete their collections by taking toys from the hands of a kid or a collector solely for the purpose of making a quick buck off of a potential buyer.
George, a collector, goes to Wal-Mart and buys two Biker Scouts: one for himself and an extra to sell to a dealer at a toy show. George is a scalper. He not only bought a toy he didn't need (a toy the next collector won't be finding on the shelf), but become a supplier to a scalper.
Ben, another collector, walked into his local Toys 'R' Us and bought three orange-carded C-3PO. He opened two for his diorama and kept the third in package. Two years later Ben decided to sell that third packaged trooper to a friend for $15.00. Is Ben scalping? No, and only because after two years that C-3PO is no longer available on store shelves. True, Ben did buy too many figures and made it difficult for another collector to waltz into that same TRU to buy a C-3PO. Bad form. His action did not help the collecting community at large. He is not branded a scalper, however, because he did not set out to buy an available toy then turn around to sell it at a profit.
If you fit within the above definition of scalping and you aren't happy, or disagree, with our position on this, we have just one thing to say: we don't argue your right to scalp. We do, in the interest of our hobby, have every right to attempt to prevent you from being successful doing it.
Discouraging scalping and being an active member in the Collect to Collect community is not easy, particularly if you are in an area where new toys are difficult to find. Observing the Collect to Collect methodology will, however, help keep the hobby healthy and enjoyable.
The eBay Equation:
Are eBay auctions a form of scalping? Some are, yes. Not all auctions can be considered scalping, however. Auctioning vintage toys is not scalping. Auctioning a prototype is not scalping. Auctioning any item not currently available in a store is not scalping. Auctioning the Stormtrooper you bought yesterday at K-Mart is scalping.
See the trend? The key is to remember that scalping is not about price - scalping is about availability. The auction for the vintage 12-back Ben Kenobi doesn't stop anyone from walking into a store and finding the latest figure.
Got What It Takes?
