I saw this post from Chris Allan and it's the first I've heard of an Adventures Omnibus from IDW.

I hope they clean up the pages instead of using comic direct scans like they did for the trade paperbacks.

Yeah, the what they used for the paperbacks is trash. The fact that there is a blatant misprint in every copy of volume 12 I've come across is just embarrassing.

Hope they include the World Tour issues they skipped, as well as the Specials and miniseries. There's so much material that's still never been reprinted.

About time. Now they just have to execute properly. Hardcover with good color and most importantly, NO GUTTER LOSS. If they execute this correctly the sales could save their company, and if they clown-world it up it could be a disaster for them

I don't know why anyone would have even the slightest bit of faith in IDW reprint team at this point.

Last time, the IDW reprint team not only skipped that, but everything between Turning Japanese and 1492.

Well, the old Mirage reprints were good, when they weren't coloring them in. The only time they did a good job with coloring was the Image reprints.

IDW has a pattern of putting out lower quality trades first and then "fixing" them with better quality trades later. It's probably done purposely to get fans to double-dip and buy the same thing twice because at first we didn't know they were going to be reprinted again.

IDW has reprinted the early Mirage issues like what....5-6 different ways now? They're literally putting out prestige collections of Vol. 1 out again in black and white (only they skipped issue 8 this time, which is weird since its in the original Ultimate collections and then the colored collections too).

Like I don't know what the hell goes on in IDW's department. The only stuff we know they can never collect is Rick Veitch's Vol. 1 stories (Sky Highway and The River 3-parter), so that's 4 issues they never collected anywhere. I'm pretty sure every other Vol. 1 issue got reprinted by now somewhere, even ones skipped originally.

Great to see that these are still coming. The listing popping up briefly last year and then quietly getting delayed to 2025 was a bit worrying. Definitely gonna be picking these up. Awesome that they got Chris Allan to do the first cover, though the coloring's a bit odd on this one. I didn't think it was possible to make his Splinter look even funkier, but miscoloring him gray does it. Kinda like that Adventures trade cover where the Turtles all have red masks. It's just off.

When is this going to be released though?

Going by the Amazon listing, March 25th, 2025. (https://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Turtles-Adventures-Omnibus/dp/B0C95WWBZH/ref=gp_aw_ybh_a_m_sccl_1/137-4448683-3822233?pd_rd_w=T26dc&content-id=amzn1.sym.9720001e-8f8b-4ff3-adb5-e19707d971f6&pf_rd_p=9720001e-8f8b-4ff3-adb5-e19707d971f6&pf_rd_r=BK0B4NEBBY5R82RPPFX7&pd_rd_wg=rMl86&pd_rd_r=4db0b5f1-e2c0-4f89-8e03-42ab6326327a&pd_rd_i=B0C95WWBZH&psc=1)

They are just going to hit reprint on what has already been reprinted. Anyone expecting anything else is a fool.

If the listing's item description is still accurate, they're actually going to try to reprint everything in reading order this time, including specials, minis, and short stories:

Relive the animated adventures of the TMNT in these classic stories from the Archie Comics series presented in this oversized hardcover!

The original animated TMNT series debuted in December 1987 and began airing full-time in October 1988 by which time the comic series had already been on sale for two months. The first three-issue series proved so popular that it turned into an ongoing series that would run for 72 issues, multiple specials, and various mini-series. This omnibus aims to collect all of the issues in recommended reading order giving fans of the series a reading experience like never before!

Volume 1 collects the original three-issue mini-series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures issues #1–17, plus the short stories “Zen Million Year to Birth,” “The Night of Monsterex,” “Metamorphosis,” “A Forgotten TMNT Adventure,” “Yo-Ho-Ho! And a Bottle of Mutagen!,” and “Doomsday Hassle in Banshee Castle.”

So lets get this straight -

IDW has released Archie TPB's, but they are just page scans - not recolored art or anything like that, and they have skipped issues of the run by virtue of some kind of "cultural sensibility" as in typical liberal-revisionist-history.

And now in an "Omnibus" the prevailing theory is that they will just take what they did in these poor TBP efforts and just print it in a larger volume called an "omnibus"?

If that is all true then everyone should bankrupt the Omnibus project completely and let IDW take another step towards death. And on the other hand if they churn out a worthwhile project worthy of an Omnibus then support it. Just don't support these half measures at all, man.

Andrew NDB

And basically, buy Omnibus Book One and hope that when Omnibus Book Two comes out it's not missing all the issues again. No thanks.

Honestly, yeah. Not the selling off of the originals part, though. Easily accessible quality reprints in big books, I'd take it. And if they want to slide in the annuals and specials and minis and all where they're supposed to go chronologically, great. Even high quality scans cleaned up a bit in Photoshop a bit would suffice, really.

This is how I did all material for Russian edition. Completely discarded the IDW-provided sources (which were the same scans from the old Archie issues) and made my own, from the British Fleetway reprints for the first half of the series.

The British ones were printed in enlarged format on glossy paper, from the original sources - they are of very good quality. But even the Archie scans can be very well processed if you try hard enough. Instead, IDW applied an additional retro filter and printed them as is. It's disgusting.

It's always sad when when the official distributor does a worse preservation job than enthusiasts. Did you know it's suspected by experts that Nintendo didn't even bother getting ROMs of their own games ready for redistribution, and just downloaded ROMs with the necessary emulator modification off the internet? Or that the Gamecube emulator used for the 3D Superstars version of Mario Sunshine renders test elements visible, even though that's not a problem on unofficial emulators? Or how said collection also has an emulated version of Mario 64, even though we know Nintendo has access to the source and could have easily made the gun run natively on the Switch?

There is a lot about the cover art that screams "Viacom directives" to me. The differing skin tone colors, Splinter being older looking with gray fur... Those colors more closely resemble the 2003 cartoon iteration than anything Archie Adventures related.
I've seen Chris Allan draw Splinter the way he used to in the series very recently- I don't think he would divert that much unless he was directed to, but I could be wrong.

A complete collection would be ideal. All those Archie specials, the Mutanimals mini-series, the other mini's like the April O'Neil and Merdude stuff, etc. all in its proper place. IDW also didn't collect Year of the Turtle last time either, they stopped at issue 72, so I hope they collect that this time.

This is definitely the route that should be taken for achieving the best possible result. I've purchased a few the Russian edition hardcovers and the page and art quality are the best I could hope for. The Russian edition cover art from Chris Allan was also amazing. I'll likely purchase more of those soon.

I personally love my disintegrating originals :D many are signed by someone involved with the issue and the creases, rips, etc make me love them more. Nothing like childhood nostalgia!

That being said I remember waiting anxiously for each volume of the TPBs to be announced and released because, heck, anything TMNT Adventures just had to be purchased. The covers mostly sucked (why not call up THE man Chris Allan!) and they skipped some great issues (hello, Shredder returns? Dramatic!). But I still had to have them for completists sake.

I would double dip for these for new Chris Allan cover art alone. But seriously, lose the 4-toned colors and the gray Splinter coloring. Just color them the way we remember - easy! It reminds me of some of the TMNT Fred Wolf DVDs, where we got 2003-ish looking Splinter in some of the packaging and multi-toned TMNT scattered throughout. Weird.

Sidenote about the skipped issues - The run of their international travels was informative as a kid. The book leveled up and didn’t treat kids like dummies. Those issues are worth bringing back.

Yeah, and so far as I know the "epilogue" portion of it has never officially reprinted anywhere else:

This is pure speculation on my part and I don't even know who you would ask to confirm it, but I've long suspected that the original duotone pages of certain issues have been lost to time and IDW only has access to the original line art. I guess they could have scanned printed issues, but there would be a noticeable difference in image quality compared to scanning original art.

It is.... And I'm glad to see him drawing TMNT here, but Splinter had a bad hair cut and the brothers aren't really lined out to look like the Archie lines that will be in the book. The coloring isn't so hot either when measured against the content either.

Basically it's a cool drawing on it's own merit, but it just doesn't scream "cover for an Archie-era Omnibus".

I'll still be interested in this once it hits somewhere like Instocktrades. Amazon's price is outlandish.

Good. Someone better remind them not to skip the middle eastern arc, at worst, they should just cut out that 1 page where Mohammed was drawn. As far as I know that caused them to skip it last time, but skipping 6 issues in a row was absurd.

Chaotix12345
06-12-2024, 06:32 PM
Good to hear about the coloring. Chris Allan's Splinter looks so odd in those colors.

Since they're specifically stressing collecting "ALL the issues" in the blurb for the first Omnibus, I'm hoping that means that the skipped issues ARE actually on the table this time around. Skipping that whole chunk of story in the previous trades was the stupidest decision in the first place, since the only problem was ONE PAGE of ONE ISSUE. Like, just edit the art to remove or silhouette the figure in question. (Shouldn't be that hard, since said page was mostly text and white background in the first place.) Gutting an entire story arc to fix it was like cutting off your hand to stop a papercut from bleeding. Hell, they could even get Chris Allan to redraw the page for the Omnibus since he's working on covers anyway.

CyberCubed
06-12-2024, 06:59 PM
Yeah, besides that there were also a ton of specials and mini-series they completely skipped over last time too. And hopefully they remember to collect Year of the Turtle at the end as well.

The only stuff from Archie they don't really have to reprint is the 3 live-action movie comic book adaptions (Movies 1-3 from the 90's), since there's no real point and they just comic adaptions of the movies and not part of the Archie series itself.

I have an absolute love for Year of the Turtle. I probably found that it struck a really good tone for the time I discovered it. Like the rest of Archie, it was rooted in the cartoon but just a little edgier. My memory is that YotT took the intensity up a notch as well.

I wouldn't even want a support a company that engages in that kind of stuff to begin with, at any point or on any level. Granted, we know from Bobby's previous openness about the situation at IDW that the reprint "people" were complete separate and not in any contact with the people actually working on the IDW TMNT books.

Yeah unless we know there's something they don't have the rights to reprint like Rick Veitch's Vol. 1 issues (The River and Sky Highway, 4 issues total), then they should be able to reprint everything. There's no exceptions.

Also there's all those Mirage specials from the 90's that have never been collected, like the Turtle Soup issues, Casey Jones mini-series, the Haunted Pizza issue, and other obscure stuff. We're lucky they reprinted most of the Shell Shock short stories in the Ultimate collections. And a few years ago we had a new collection for Bodycount, although I don't think IDW put that one out.

I guess I better get off my butt and get the black and white collecrion Mirage tpb vilume before I lose out on THEM, too...

I guess I could read the archie books online...but that's just not the same...

amazon usually slashes the prices quickly. For example the first two Mirage compendiums were originally $150 and now they're $68 new on amazon. They basically slashed the price in half.

Expect the Archie one to be the same after about 6-8 months.

It's basically five of the original TPBs in a hardcover collection, plus some short stories. Those were $19.99 MSRP so it's essentially the same price.

True, but for people where money's tight, we can't really afford, essentially, 5 books all at the same time.

Maybe they'll do individual releases ? I hope so. I only have the first 50 issues...some of which are falling apart after reading them over and over since I was 8....

Extremely unlikely since they already did the 16 TPBs that are now out of print. It's going to be at least 30-40% off online so it won't be that bad.

Amazon listing now has a couple preview pages up. Most interesting of them is the table of contents, which reveals two more included stories that weren't mentioned in previous descriptions: Origin of the Species and Red Sails in the Sunset, both originally from the TMNT Meet Archie Special. Happy to finally have those confirmed, as they both could only really work in this earliest chunk of the book, timeline-wise. (It'll also be nice to actually have Manmoth introduced well before his return, unlike what happened with the previous TPBs.)

Really hope they do this well then with all 72 issues + mini-series and specials. And PLEASE don't skip the middle eastern arc this time like the previous trades did, maybe at most just don't print that 1 page that shows Mohammed. The fact that the previous trades skipped 5 issues in the main ongoing that was important was what killed my interest in buying the trades.

Looking at the table of contents, IDW's chronology is pretty close to mine!

https://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Turtles-Adventures-Omnibus/dp/B0C95WWBZH/

https://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-archie-tmnt-adventures-continuity.html

I see they shifted "Origin of the Species" a little further down and put the "Metamorphosis" bookenders in slightly different places, but we were both pretty close to each other.

Only big difference between IDW's and mine seems to be "Green Legs and Gams", the crossover with the Archie characters. I was never 100% sure of my placement on that one, anyway, since it required some creative thinking to put it where I did. (hopefully IDW isn't omitting it entirely due to licensing issues with the Archie characters and their chronology is just placing it elsewhere in the timeline)

Happy to see obscure stuff like the Mini Comics interlude story and the Tundra trade paperback bookends included. It's a level of thoroughness and care not typically seen in IDW's TMNT reprints.

I'll be interested to see how IDW's timeline compares to mine after the Mutanimals miniseries and adjacent TMNTA stories. A lot of those Specials and minis are wholly episodic and could be dropped anywhere chronologically that TMNTA takes a break in its ongoing storyline.

It would be nice to have a definitive version of Archie trades for once. Also they should include the two new Archie stories that were in the 30th and 40th IDW anniversary books as well, the first one Murphy did of Bebop/Rocksteady shopping in a supermarket wasn't that important but funny, but the second one finally introduced Casey Jones in Archie canon!

As I said before, now the Turtles referencing Casey Jones in "Year of the Turtle" actually makes sense. Casey finally made his canon debut this year in Archie in IDW's 40th anniversary trade. They should slot that story in right after the Moon Eyes saga.

I am willing to bet that they found your timeline (Thank you for making it!) and meant to go with it exactly. The two Metamorphosis parts are actually in the correct places. It's their Origin of the Species story placement that is wrong.

It makes zero sense where they have it, because Bebop and Rocksteady appear in Origin of the Species, but they were trapped underground between #9 and #11. So it's obviously a mistake on their end.

It is as if when they recently went to add the two new stories from the Meet Archie book, someone asked, where does Origin of the Species go? Then someone else responded with something like, right before Metamorphosis. But they accidentally added it in before the Epilogue instead of before the Prologue.

Question for anyone reading this: How do we get in contact with the reprint department at IDW so that we can let them know? I really hope they fix this error before the book goes to print.

I stopped picking up IDW's stuff a few years ago aside from Saturday Morning Adventures. I do really enjoy that series, though my comic guy has to let a bunch pile up before he'll ship them to me (to justify the postage cost). So I usually only get them in a big pile 2 or 3 times a year. Burnham's issues of Saturday Morning Adventures I think are the most solid (especially the Halloween Special), but I haven't been badly let down with anything so far.

I think the last IDW TMNT thing I read besides that was the second Power Rangers crossover, which I thought was pretty good (loved the first one). I tried reading the Stranger Things crossover but asked my comic guy to drop it after 1 issue. Not gonna bother with the Naruto one (I really don't know anything about Naruto, though).

Putting that run together can be a real chore - especially if you deep-dive it between newsstands and direct editions, and even crazier if you start embracing all of the various printings that used to pop up at Kay-B-Toys.

You know, the more I read from all y'all, the more I realize just how incredibly lucky I apparently was. Back in high school, my local comic shop had a box of nearly every Archie issue which he saved aside for me. I got the whole thing all at once for $62 bucks. All I had to track down were the specials and a couple of the extra rare issues, like #71 and #72. Though I could do with replacing #11. That one is not in great shape.

So I don't get it, why did Archie allow Muhammad to be drawn in the 90's but apparently they can't do that now?

Jyllandsposten published satirical depictions in 2005 which led to massive protests, Lars Vilks made satirical content about Muhammad in 2007 and his home was burned down for it, in 2015 the offices of Charlie Hebdo were attacked for publishing satirical cartoons of Muhammad as well.

All of these instances came after Archie originally published those comics and clearly they weren't that worried about it. While it is part of islam that you can't visually depict Muhammad or Allah, it's pretty obvious that it is the satirical aspects of these incidents that sparked the protests and violence. A neutral explanation of Islam and Muhammad like in TMNTA would likely pass under the radar and not be considered worth protesting anyway, as it's not likely to inspire criticism or deconstruction of Islam, which is what they likely see as the real threat to their religion.

ToTheNines
01-16-2025, 12:58 PM
I don't think the average ass hole knew that much about Islam in the 90's and no one caught it. I didn't learn any of this stuff until high school, and I grew up in a pretty diverse area outside Chicago.

But now everyone knows better. Praise Allah!

I think it's scalping whenever the supply is artificially restricted, and the demand is artificially manufactured. The market is the market, but if the market "takes off" because a handful of people buy up all the copies with the purpose of commodotizing them, then I would qualify that as scalping.

In my view, the primary purpose of books and comics should be to read them, and while I have no problem with people making money off things they own, it really gets my goat when people who don't actually want it bleed the the people who do dry. Once, in my quest to find the print books of Ryan Armand, particularly minus., I found a guy who had them and wanted to know if they were worth anything. I immediately offered him a couple hundred dollars, and he said he wanted "250... thousand... per book." [sic]. This guy, who didn't want these rare books, also thinks they were apparently worth one million dollars, denying people who actually did want the books the opportunity to have them for the sake of a price he was never, ever going to get.

My point it, if that issue suddenly became hard to find because a bunch of people wanted to try and capitalizeon potential censorship, then I don't really think that's the market; it's just people being jerks.

(No one should take my tirade to be directed at them; this just happens to be a personal pet peeve of mine).

I think it's scalping whenever the supply is artificially restricted, and the demand is artificially manufactured.

In the comic book world we call that "speculation"

I know guys who are super into "Valiant Comics" - you remember them - like Magnus, Solar, Archer & Armstrong. So those books are sort of known in those circles by their print runs. Conversations about print runs abound in those groups, and it's commonly relevant because, you know, Valiant had some truly low-print run books for it's era. And my God, you should see the "hoards" of books some of these guys have.

And so, at what point is the artificial restriction of supply a problem? Right? I mean on that logic then the entirety of modern trading cards are a huge ethical problem because they are all serialized. You could, in theory go out and buy every card that was labeled "1 of 100"! Go check out the newest Marvel Masterpieces set from this year - once you wrap your head around the metrics you find that it's nearly impossible to actually complete a set and enjoy them - some of the tiers are limited to only 90 copies of some standard set cards! That means that by the distribution it's entirely possible that you can't even complete the 90 proposed full sets because maybe someone will never want to give up the one card you'd need, and you only have 90 opportunities in pack-pulled cards to do it. So then, is Upper Deck "scalping" right from the pack wrapper?

As for the Archie TMNT I will say this - the book in question might see some speculation interest, but the real discerning collectors for that run will be more concerned with digging up the Kay-B-Toys reprints... I mean I think issue 1 alone went to 10 printings and some of those are incredibly small print runs. After that? Newsstands for those books......

Is that the company that caused one of the comic crashes because of the percieved values of #1s, or was that a different company?

And so, at what point is the artificial restriction of supply a problem? Right? Well not scalping, per se, but definitely a scummy practice that runs entirely on FOMO and annoys me to no end, and is also the precise reason why I have nothing to do with trading cards and the like, beyond my old Yu Gi Oh cards from Elementary school. And, like, two Pokemon cards.

As for the Archie TMNT I will say this - the book in question might see some speculation interest, but the real discerning collectors for that run will be more concerned with digging up the Kay-B-Toys reprints... Some of that minutiae is stuff I never really bothered with because of how much money I'd have to spend for reletively low value (storywise). I wouldn't say no if I found it, but I'm pretty satisfied with having at least one physical copy of every main issue. Though those last Volume 4 issues and Tales #70 I think will continue to elude me.

A bit off topic but I once saw a guy in the parking lot near my home praying to Mecca, he presumably did it there because it was late in the day and he didn't have time to get somewhere more private. I mean it's only the first 17ish issues and some specials so far. So everything up to that point is there. Here is the amazon info

Volume 1 collects the original three-issue miniseries, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures issues #1–17, plus the short stories “Zen Million Year to Birth,” “The Night of Monsterex,” “Metamorphosis,” “A Forgotten TMNT Adventure,” “Origin of the Species,” “Yo-Ho-Ho! And a Bottle of Mutagen!,” “Doomsday Hassle in Banshee Castle,” and “Red Sails in the Sunset.”

It'll take them awhile to get through the whole series, assuming it sells well enough to continue. Hopefully they don't skip anything this time around.

Until I see that the missed main issues are included in volume 2 or 3 I'll pass on this. Wouldn't mind the short stories, but nearly $100 is too much for that if they're more focused on "not offending anyone" and not bringing us a complete collection. And if the main problem is just a page like I've heard, I'm fine with an edit or removal.

What you've said here was basically my point on the previous pages until someone pointed out that this book doesn't encapsulate those comics.

It is completely irrational to censor old writings in any way over modern sensibility. All that actually does somewhere down the road is provide evidence of current trends where egos and heads deeply up their own fake-puritan asses. And that even more than any content they pretend to be "offended" at from a 30-year old Ninja Turtles comic.

Actually now that you mention this, f it. I'm not ordering the Omnibus until we know what's in the future releases as well. And if by that time the 1st one is OOP and unavailable, then I'm out completely. Serves IDW right for even putting this kind of discussion on our radar at all.

Now that it’s been released and the price has come down a bit, has anyone picked this up and can offer a review for us?

I've seen some solid enough reviews that cover most of it. It seems that the following points are the bulk of the discussion:

-most of the convo is about the cover art, whether you like it or not
-the book's construction is well enough done so as to avoid gutter loss
-the downside is that the pages are scanned reproductions as opposed to going back to the original art and digitally coloring it. This is the method of absolute minimal-effort for a trade
-many of the scans have bleed through or page wrinkles on the scans themselves, so the artifacts you'll see on the page are from that process. For example, if you see a page wrinkle, or a compression on the paper it's most likely not on the manufactured book but rather in the scans themselves (which sucks).

I'd say that's all relevant conversation, but as to how any of that actually translates into your enjoyment of reading the older stories - I couldn't say. I'm more concerned with IDW's history of omissions by censorship and the sensibility that indicates for this and future Collections. Basically this release strikes me as a 'just get it done and out there' release. Which sometimes is actually fine, but the ongoing censorship issue is a longer term decision.

Of course the liberal clowns at IDW will disregard this when making their evaluation as to whether or not this trade sold well enough for future trades to come out. They'll just go by the "fans didn't support it" when in fact fans would have had they not been in limbo over censorship for the rest of the collection. I honestly think someone should just ask them about it directly. Like an editor too - not some customer service person.

I don't know! But whether they are or aren't doesn't really do anything to impact the valid criticism that there are page artifacts in the Omnibus from scanwork.

My two complaints is it seemed like a couple of stories were missing their cover art. I’ll have to double check that though.

I noticed something in a review video about the Compendium and it didn't look right. So I went to the original comics and made this graphic to point it out:

https://i.imgur.com/7O47WNdl.jpg

For some reason the pages in the compendium aren't layed out as the appropriate right-sided or left-sided pages. Might not be a big deal, but it DOES mean that something was omitted - maybe a cover image? Also, if the layout was screwed up by IDW in any way it could impact any splash pages and so on.

It's just ads they cut out. No pages are missing, they are all numbered if you want to check.

It's okay. Everything is the same in the Russian version, and we absolutely have nothing missing. In the original, the pages of the comic are interrupted by advertisements, so they cut them out. Also, the first issues don't have 2-page spreads, so that's not a problem at all.

Not sure if you understood what I was saying when pointing it out above. We know the pages are numbered and there was no implication that a story page was missing. The only implication was about the covers being reprinted intact, and how the right/left alignment impacts potential splash pages.

I don't know why they would shift the page siding instead of using a placeholder page somewhere to keep them set correctly. They would have to do it anyway to once you came upon a 2-page splash of some kind - unless that entire span of issues doesn't have a single 2-page splash across all of those books.

It's probably not the end of the world, but at the end of the day it is another noticeable choice by IDW that gives me hesitation to buy along with their pathetic revisionist history through censorship in the Archie books.

I’ve flipped through the book and could have missed something but there is no problem with the way the pages are laid out. What you’re asking for is not standard practice - they’d have to put breaks in wherever there were ads to keep page siding the exact same as in the original issues. The way IDW has done it here is the way every publisher does. In fact, they actually added green filler pages in between every issue to make sure that every cover is in the same place for every issue.

As far as missing covers, they’ve split up the stories in the anthology issues like the Specials and are only reprinting the cover in front of the “main” story, like Night of the Monsterex. Again, there are page breaks in front of the ones without covers to provide separation. Same with the Archie Special but that one may have other rights issues too. I assume this was done to not reprint the same cover several times for each Special. No other covers are missing.

The “Metamorphosis” stories were in a TMNTA TPB and did not have an issue cover, however the TPB cover is printed on the inside cover which is neat.

Overall it’s a pretty average collection in terms of quality. It is not restored or recolored. There are no extras beyond the comics. However, it is the most complete and properly ordered TMNTA collection we are likely to ever see, and I believe it’s the only time these comics have been printed in an oversize format. Of course the potential for volume 2 to remove the controversial stuff still exists but I’m optimistic it will be just as complete as volume 1 (assuming it even gets announced).

Yup. The observation about the page-placement was just another observation of "just in case", but I believe TurtleGurkle if he says it's fine with the book in-hand.

But still not buying it on principle alone of IDW's censorship and ongoing woke $#!( mentality. If future volumes appear like they are meant for "normal people" and not blue-hairs or sensitivity-dictators, then I'll buy it.

Usually they do complete trades of a series outside of some issues they purposely skip over. Like the original tpb Archie trades DID collect all the way up to issue 72, they just skipped the whole middle east arc and most of the specials or one-shots weren't collected either besides a few of the Mutanimal issues. And they didn't collect Year of the Turtle.

Their old colorized Vol. 1 trades despite being colored horribly did collect every issue up to #62 too besides the Rich Veitch issues which they can't do. They also did all of Vol. 2 before in the old tpb's.

The only time they canceled trades was the Tales Vol. 2 trades, they collected roughly up to issue #25 out of a 70 issue series and never went back to it. I really hope they give it another chance.

He's saying what if they cancel the rest because Omni #1 doesn't sell well. Other small trades are usually foregone conclusion that sales will come in.

One small thing I also hope they don’t overlook is “Paper or Plastic” from the 30th anniversary special. It ain’t much, but unless I’m mistaken it’s the last published work Steve Murphy ever did, so it’s pretty significant for that.

I don’t know how this would even work, but it would be pretty neat to see them include Turtles Club’s Forver War, How it All Began and Crop Circles when they got to it. Especially since “The Man Behind the Mask” from the 40th anniversary special is a direct prelude to Crop Circles.

Everything we've heard in the past is that "the reprint people" are somehow totally insulated from the rest of IDW editorial and creative and nobody from either side really knows what the other side is doing at any point. Which has always sounded like a pretty bizarre way to run a comic company. Also, with downstream effects like us ending up with blue Mirage Shredder and blue Shredder Elite NECA figures and more.

Maaaaaaan, I want to rant about that.

Viacom/Nickelodeon/Paramount/WHATEVER, some corporate entity that doesn't give a damn, seems to be under the impression that IDW's hideous and inconsistent colorized editions of the Mirage comics are the "Mirage colors" and that's what they mandate to licensees like Neca.

So Neca's first run or wide retail release of Mirage TMNT toys have to use the IDW colors, while the proper Mirage colors are relegated to exclusives for random stores or that freakin' NFT thing. Neca has this "Mirage TMNT: IDW Colors" and "Mirage TMNT: Mirage Colors" distinction that is the most asinine and terrible thing that needlessly complicates just trying to buy a Mirage Renet that isn't red and brown.

Alright, I'm done.

I believe they did, which is why I take their full inclusion here as a good sign.

Yeah I’m feeling optimistic. My biggest concern is how they’re gonna handle the Mohamed panel. That certainly won’t make it in, but how much will they censor? Panel, page, or entire issue?

But it should make it in. Censoring things is an empty act of omission. It's not an act of "support" in any way. It's basically another virtue-signaling lie.

They can just pretend that it's not Mohamed, it's "Incredibly Causasion Middle Eastern Man." And then mention it to no one.

Honestly, I'm not sure Islam cares about a single image in a TMNT comic from the 90s, that depicts Islam entirely neutrally. They didn't seem to care the first time, so there's a good chance that it's not even on the radar.

Well we know IDW’s political leanings, so I think it’s inevitable.

I won’t fault them for censoring that single panel. But if they can’t do that, they’re just lazy.

True, all terror attacks in Europe and the uproar in the States over South Park and Family Guy doing it were based on the fact that people were willfully mocking the religion.

TMNTA did it in an educational way and without understanding the faux pas. They could probably just reprint it as is and the world wouldn’t notice.

I’ve never seen them comment on it, but I’m sure Murphy and Chris Allan regret it and would rather it be censored in reprints.

Thank god nobody complained about Muhammed or Islam! I hope this stays true to when we get closer to release.

Next, are all the specials in the right order? I admit this is where things get tricky as Murphy didn't write the 11 specials so a lot of those stories feel weird placing in the middle of the main run (not counting the mini-series which purposely were written to intersect with the main stories)

There should be no licensing issues with them collecting the, "Turtles meet Archie" and "Turtles meet the conervation corps" stories right? At least there shouldn't be? I wouldn't care too much if they were excluded but for completists sake they should include everything, even throw in the 3 Sourcebooks somewhere towards the end of the run.

Only thing they don't have to collect is the Archie versions of the movie adaptions, IDW can just reprint those separately like they did the first movie comic adaption if they want.

It looks like they're still mostly following the flow of contents from my old timeline (though we have the listing, I'm not sure about the order they'll use).

For this chunk of stories, I had guessed the reading order as:

TMNT Adventures Special #1 – “If a Tree Falls…” (review)
TMNT Adventures Special #1 – “The Last Sea Serpent” (review)
TMNT Adventures Special #2 – “The Wrath of the Fire God” (review)
TMNT Adventures Special #2 – “The Ghost of 13 Mile Island!” (review)
TMNT Adventures #27 – “In the Dark” (review)
TMNT Meet the Conservation Corps #1 (review)
TMNT Adventures Special #9 – “Be a Star” (review)
Unpublished – “Coney Island Days” (review)

MIDNIGHT SUN (AND OTHER ADVENTURES)

TMNT Adventures #24 (back-up) – “It Started in… Chinatown” (review)
TMNT Adventures #25 (back-up) – “Dragon Rage” (review)
TMNT Adventures #26 (back-up) – “Questions” (review)
TMNT Adventures #27 (back-up) – “The White Ninja” (review)
TMNT Adventures #28 – “Midnight Sun, Part One” (review)
TMNT Adventures #29 – “Midnight Sun, Part Two” (review)
TMNT Adventures #30 – “Midnight Sun, Part Three” (review)
TMNT Adventures #31 – “Turning Japanese” (review)
TMNT Adventures #32 – “The Good, the Bad and the Tattooed” (review)
TMNT Presents April O’Neil #1 (back-up) – “Oo-La-La, Part One” (review)
TMNT Presents April O’Neil #2 (back-up) – “Oo-La-La, Part Two” (review)
TMNT Presents April O’Neil #3 (back-up) – “Oo-La-La, Part Three” (review)
TMNT Adventures #33 – “The Karma of Katmandu” (review)
TMNT Adventures #34 – “The Search for the Charlie Llama” (review)
TMNT Presents April O’Neil #1 – “You’re Fired!” (review)
TMNT Presents April O’Neil #2 – “The Chinatown Connection” (review)
TMNT Presents April O’Neil #3 – “Big Trouble Under Chinatown” (review)

UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL (AND OTHER ADVENTURES)

TMNT Adventures #35 – “The Black Stone” (review)

"Be a Star" from Special #9 is the only omission that really deviates from what I came up with (excluding obvious licensing conflicts like the Conservation Corps crossover or the unpublished Coney Island Days). They included "Full Circle", the other story featuring Headrush from Special #9, in Compendium 2. So not sure what they're postponing it for unless it's a matter of reorganizing reading order for the sake of the length of the book.

And yeah, fingers crossed IDW doesn't lose their nerve and cut the Mecca issue.

Yeah, the trade ending on issue 35 over 36 is suspect, since 36 ends that middle eastern arc. #37 is just a return to Stump Asteroid filler issue, so I hope that doesn't mean #36 got cut. I guess we still have to wait to see when the 4th collection gets announced.

I mean 35 issues out of 72 is close to halfway through, isn't it? That's a pretty good pace considering the sheer mass of specials and mini-series they have to collect inbetween it all. I hope they also remember Year of the Turtle at the end.

Things that might still be cut:

TMNT meets Archie (?)
TMNT meets Conservation Corps (?)
The 3 Archie Sourcebooks (although they can just throw these in on the last collection I guess?)
The 3 live-action movie adaptions (IDW can just reprint the Movie 2 and 3 comic adaptions separately like they did with the Movie 1 35th anniversary trade they did last year)

#35 is the big Mohammed issue. I’m not worried about #36. But it is slightly odd that it’s not in this volume, but they probably have the entire thing planned out and are making them as even as possible.

I’m personally worried about “Paper or Plastic” from IDW’s 30th anniversary special. It’s a goofy little short, but it’s the last thing Steve Murphy ever wrote.

Should be after #40 if they make it to volume 4 of these.

In all fairness, and despite owning a copy of it, I don't think anyone would miss Conservation Corp if they cut it. But including 35 is a good sign. The only other "objectionable" issue past this point would be the Future Turtles story, but in today's landscape, I don't think that one will have any trouble getting through.

You know it's a shame IDW messed up the Archie trades the first time around (skipping the middle eastern arc, skipping most of the specials), because we should of had all this done YEARS ago. I know better late than never, but nowadays we all gotta hope IDW as a whole doesn't go bankrupt or lose the TMNT license so these trades don't get canceled halfway through.

IDW has owned the TMNT license since 2011, and we're now in 2026 and we're just now getting proper Archie Adventure trades. Why couldn't they have done this like a decade ago...

It really is crazy. There's clearly been a shift in scope and probably personnel in the reprint department. They're finally focusing on collecting everything in nice hardcovers.

But... IDW will have had the license 15 years this Summer. It's pretty shameful that there's still such big holes in their Mirage reprints and how they treated TMNTA the first time around.

I see they shifted "Origin of the Species" a little further down and put the "Metamorphosis" bookenders in slightly different places, but we were both pretty close to each other.

Finally working my way through this omnibus.

I got to “Origin of the Species” last night. There’s an editor’s note on the first page saying it takes place between #9 and #10. The note is credited to Scott (I assume Scott Fulop) and Fred (I have no clue who Fred is). I thought it was a little odd that you’d miss a big fat editors note on the first page, so I checked the original story in the TMNT Meet Archie book.

Guess what… no such editor’s note! They even made it look all crappy and yellowed so it blended in and appeared to be part of the original story. I wish we had a direct line to someone in the reprint department to ask about stuff like this.

Anyone know who Fred is?

So I’ve been running my mouth in this thread all week and getting proven wrong repeatedly, but I think I’m finally onto something. That editor’s note, and in turn IDW, are wrong.

Bebop and Rocsteady are buried alive for 3 days starting at the end of #9. The Sons of Silence don’t rescue them until #11, so them being in “Origin of the Species” means it can’t take place there. I think Spengler had it right and they done goofed.

Yeah, there's a pretty massive time skip between #4 and #5 where plenty of stories could fit. That's the only spot that makes sense for "Origin of the Species" to take place, as well as the flashback portion of TMNTA #41.

So we're getting the issues we thought they skipped? Here's hoping they continue to do God's work. I get the feeling someone from the marketing department is lurking this forum, so if they are, we got to steer them in the right direction. Everyone correctly explain what issues are needed and when so the marketing/editor guys see it.

Ok, volume 2 is out tomorrow. A dirty LEAKER has released the table of contents. Starting with #18, it matches Spengler's reading order except for no "Full Power" between #25 and the May East Saga.

Looking at Mark's turtle tips section of his review of that story, he put it after #25 semi-arbitrarily. The main note being that it has to be between #22 and #28. We know this story will be in volume 3, so I imagine it will be early in the book and not be a problem.

So no complaints from me this time. Hopefully they ace the rest of these and we just have to live with "Origin of the Species" being wrong.

EDIT: Mark put "Full Power" where it is because "Be a Star" (also from Special #9) is a follow up and some time has passed. We'll see how they lay them out in the next volume, but either way I'm sure it will be fine.

 excellent use of that.

Or Allah's, in this case.

I don't know Arseniy will look in this thread and answer this or not, but does anybody else know how the Russian reprints handled #35 and the Middle East arc? Did they skip or censor anything?

It's too bad we're only getting 1 of these collections a year, wish we could get at least 2 so we could get through it faster without fear of it being canceled halfway through.

Volumes 2 and 3 are both this year.

I really hope they put out 4-6 in 2027. But at this current pace these should be done in early 2028. Fingers crossed.

I’m also imagining a dream scenario where IDW pays Turtles Club to include Forever War and beyond. But that’s crazy talk.

I’m getting this one today from my LCS since I have a huge gift card, but going forward I’m going to pre-order from MyComicShop.com since they do a 30% discount on pre-orders of “graphic novels”.

I think that’s the best way to support these, but also get them at a less salty price point.

This story was published in its entirety in the Russian version, uncensored.
