A lot of people praise the first 5 episodes, but really Season 2 has a GREAT storyline that people seem to forget.

The Eye of Sarnath saga is really cool, it shows the Turtles as weak, Shredder as tough and resourceful and even has a death....let me rekindle some memories...

Return of the Shredder is really the first independant episode of the TMNT series. Its sees Shredder get sent from Dimension X to Earth, with NO HELP from Krang. As the two aren't getting along. He hatches a funny, Crooked Ninja Turtle Gang...While the show itself it weak, it does have some decent Ninja fighting and some good lines....but the next show sets up another mini-series....

The Incredible Shrinking Turtles, is Episode 1 of the mini-series and has a great story. This alien from outerspace crashes on Earth, inside his ship is the Eye of Sarnath crystals. While we never learn why he had these crystals it is sort of elluded to, that he was trying to destory them before evil hands got on them. Perhaps he was even shot down to Earth? Anyway, the turtles save him from drowning and he tells them that his ship blew up re-entering the Earth's atmosphere and that they have to find the crystals. He then, DIES! Sure he evaporates, but he is blatantly dead. Pretty cool. He dies but before he does he gives the turtles a weapon/tracker to get the 3 parts of the crystals back. Shredder gets the first crystal first though, and actually defeats ALL 4 turtles in hand to hand combat. Then uses a ray from the crystal to shrink the turtles. Later Shredder actually is about to kill the turtles, and EVEN DEFEATS Splinter one on one. Of course April saves the turtles and the day, but Shredder escapes with the Crystal.

This is a 5 star episode as the turtles actually lose all through the ep, and Shredder is put over as tough as he single handedly took out all the turtles and Splinter and at the end of the day still had the crystal.

It Came from Beneath the Sewers, continues this saga, with Shredder actually managing to get the 2nd Crystal, still with no help from Krang. Some great arguing by those two in this episode, as well, Shredder frees Baxter Stockman from a looney bin. Cool episode that continues the saga.

The Mean Machines has Shredder getting the second part of the eye of Sarnath and putting it into a computer reveals it has a evil computer mind inside it. This episode is one part Lawnmower Man/ One part Maximum overdrive. The turtles stop Shredder's plan, but he still has the crystals.

Curse of the Evil Eye wraps up this mini-series, with Shredder once AGAIN beating out the turtles on their quest to get the Eye of Sarnath. He actually puts it together, and mounts it on his helmet. He and Baxter get into it, and Baxter ends up with the helmet, as well as a nerdy reporter. In the end the turtles discover that gold can prevent the Eye's powers, and use some gold shields to block Shredders attack. They finally get to use the tracking device to blow up the Eye and its hinted that Shredder is dead. Baxter is actually pretty tough in this episode as well.

Cool Mini series that really continues with the series tone of the first 5 eps, and starts the second season off with a bang. So for those thinking that only a few of the first episodes had good sagas, you may want to check into the episodes I listed here. The Eye of Sarnath Saga is pretty cool in my book.

I certingly count "Eye of Sarnath" as one of the greatest sagas in the original series' early run

And speaking of arcs that get no credit, what about the following:

"Big Rip Off" Trilogy

"Cry HAVOK" Saga

"Turtles to the Tenth Power" saga

I'd say season 2 is still enjoyable, but season 3 is too boring for me to watch, with few exceptions.

my favortie season is season 2. It was the best. I never really cared for the fist season. Even though 3 out of 5 was good.

Season 2 was very good overall. It was still relatively hard edged and had good storylines, before S3 started to pull TMNT into commercial cesspool. I agree that the whole S2 mini series was very well done, for the reasons described in the original post. Mainly, it helped glorify and portray Shredder as cunning and competent and I also think it portrayed Krang more realistically - not only does he ignore Shredder, but is also enacting some form of revenge on him by banishing him like that.

Yeah, that was always my favorite saga, even though that alien scared me silly as a kid. (I'm deathly afraid of aliens)

Yes, the Eye Of Sarnath eps are great....I love the Incredible Shrinking Turtles VHS, all four are fun to watch and usually in one sitting too. Out of them all "The Incredible Shrinking Turtles" episode in particular is my favorite, although the others have their good moments esp. in humor.

Who could forget season 2? For me, it was the first time I ever watched the TMNT with the episode Splinter No More. Back then it was on at 6:30 on Saturday mornings, but I still got up to watch it. Season 1 and 2 are my favorite seasons, with 3 being 3rd.
The Eye of Sarnath saga was one of the best "continuing" stories in the entire run, and, a little off-subject maybe, I loved how they continued the story in the Archie Comics.
