For the re-release of the 1st movie the BBC have added a review of it to their site and it is really negative. I last seen the movie when I was about 5 or 6 so I can barely remember what happened but the BBC make out that it was a total disaster. I thought most people here though the first movie was cool and the other 2 were the.. 'less cool' ones.

You can read the full review here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2003/12/09/teenage_mutant_ninja_turtles_1990_review.shtml

For those of you who have a better recollection of the movie, Do you agree/disagree with the BBC's view ?

God what morons. and BTW look at the reviewer rating vs the Customer ratings... 2 out of 5 to 4 out of 5. The 1st TMNT movie rocked and they're just saying they think it's out of date. How was something like this successful? Easy, it was a very cool movie, it was very exciting, good action, and good comedy all rolled into one. TMNT 1 owns, those reviewers are just idiots.

OMG!!! what a bunch of morons!!! that movie RULED!!!! i saw it again a few months back (i think november) and i loved it like it was the first time i saw it. don't pay attention to them, the movie is great, even if it wasn't the tmnt, or if i wasn't a fan, i would have loved it!. Thats a lot of crap from BBC!

What a lame review. There's no real point in it, really. The reviewer ssumes it's made for little children, and the story is bland? He does not know anything about the TMNT beyond the old cartoon it seems. Little kids are not the audience that made this film a huge success, it worked for all ages.

Not even bothering to read. The critics are obviously duplicitous old farts who only like crappy chick flicks (like Mona Lisa Smile... gag!) and pointless whiney indiue films....

I can't believe people actually take these old fogeys seriously. I mean, if you don't like the TMNT, you won't like the movie. But even then, it was quite brilliant, and personally the best comic book movie of all time, successfully translating it to the screen, without cashing in too much.

The BBC always give great movies bad reviews, they even gave the second Pokemon film and the first Power Rangers movie zero stars and both of them were classics.

The first film is the one that nearly every fan can love, it was the closest to the comic in every form, and stands today as a great movie

Negative movie reviews of ones I like tend to dampen my enthusiasm for them because I notice the 'negative' things they point out. I hate that cuz it spoils the movie for me and I wished I'd never read them. I know that may sound ridiculous because we should all form our opinions instead of swallowing the critics' ones. But that's just how it is with me.

Leonard Maltin also gave the movies a horrible review, but funny thing is most normal reviewers at Amazon.com give the first movie good ratings.
My initial feelings to the first two movies are good anyway since I'm a Turtle fan and because the movies are from my childhood. Yes, they have their weak moments, esp. Ooze, but its best to just enjoy them instead of nitpicking.

"Totally tubular dude"

I can't remember that ever being said. Did this guy even watch the movie? Like, actually watch it? I honestly think some of these critics sit back and stare at movies they've already judged before they've watched them.

'Sides, It wasn't the kids pocket money going to the merch... it was their parents XD.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM.
TMNT 1 is the best one of all 3. It is the best representation of the mirage version, well close as you can get. You want to see it if you havent.

Raph, believe it or not, said 'totally tubular dude' near the end when the guys were coming up with more corny cliches. then he said something else weird that people think he said bitchin' but it doesnt really sound like that

No popular action/fantasy movies ever get good reviews from "the critics". And that is because those people only praise two kinds of movies. One, they praise movies with a long twisted story with lots of emotion - because those films are deemed to have "deep inner meaning" (ex. The English Patient: terrible movie, but yet critically acclaimed). Second, these so-called "professionals" tend to praise things that are currently doing really well money wise. Doesn't matter how bad or shallow the movie is, if it's made money, they'll keep trying to outcompete each other on "why it was so good". So therefore, there is no need to be upset about this at all. Their opinions are subjective and don't matter. TMNT 1 is still a good film.

Ebert, the fat fart that he is, can review movies really good sometimes. Often he researches deep into the history of the movies, and provides good analaysis. I don't always agree with him, but he usually has a good view none the less. However I was sad to read that when he reviewed the original Turtles movie, he didn't like it, and yammered on about how the turtles were originally a video game, and how they made sense in a game but not on the big screen. His review reads almost like he watched Super Mario Brothers instead of the turtles, so take this review with a grain of salt.

I can't take a review seriously if the reviewer can't even get the facts straight. Ebert's, for example, reeked of ignorance for the material the movie was based on, and this one entirely dismisses the story as "kiddie fare" at the first glance. The fact is, many "reviewers" aren't even judging the films they review based on the actual material, but their first impression of the movie from far before they actually sit down to see it. It's unfortunate, but it's true. You can't really trust any reviews you read, because the reviewer's opinion likely doesn't represent what he actually saw - only what he walked into the movie expecting to think.

(And the fact that he chided it for not having CGI just makes me want to track this bloke down and throttle him.)

TMNT is still one of my favourite movies, while II and III I've mostly forgotten about. It was a franchise movie, yes. But it was an independent movie, true to the independent source material. And y'know, it had heart. That shot of Raphael after discovering Splinter had been kidnapped (or possibly killed) is still chilling.

And even for kids, it's a movie with a good message about just what family means...

The first TMNT movie wasn't "that bad". It wasn't "bad" by any stretch of the imagination.

All the same, it still doesn't surprise that the BBC crapped on the first movie. The British officials really never liked the TMNT concept that much. They changed the cartoon to be "Hero Turtles", and they also edited out all the parts where Mike used his chucks and then some to comply with their rating standards. No wonder the movie looks horrible! :dead:

I agree completely, the animatronic costumes are REAL beings in REAL lifelike, actually there, seemingly speaking,etcetcetc....the human actors can't interact with something that's not really there, especially when you know the cgi characters arent really there it ruins it. No CGI turtle could ever bring the real movements or express real emotions that the costumed actor could! Sure we know they're in costumes but we easily forget and BELIEVE they're real. With CGI you know it's fake and I personally can't believe in some computer generated charater that's not really there.

I hope, with whatever the Hallmark TV movie does, if it goes back into production, I hope they do NOT go CGI.

I didnt bother to see Hulk, it looked really stupid. I mean, to me the Hulk is Lou Ferigno painted green!
.it's like old stop motion animation, I MISS THIS!!!!!! I love the SMA from Star Wars...now it's all that CGI crap. Ugh.

Here's something rather depressing I read at a website for Judith Hoag:

Her next film was Cadillac Man in which she co-starred with Robin Williams and Tim Robbins. It was during this time that she read for the movie Teenage Ninja Turtles. "I got this movie while I was still shooting Cadillac Man and had to fly off to North Carolina on the weekends. Everyone wondered what kind of strange movie I was off doing. Only Robin had heard of the Ninja Turtles. He had collected all of the comic books and couldn't wait to see the movie. He brought his kids to the premiere and surprised me. The movie ended up being a big hit. I still have a hard time watching that movie... I was never satisfied with how it came out. It lost a lot of its soul. Elias Koteas, however was brilliant."

:o I read that and thought, "Judith! How could you say such a thing?" Elias wasn't just brilliant, the whole damn picture was! I was really surprised by that statement. Well, I still like it no matter what any critic (or celebrity!) says. Though, I thought it was cool to hear Robin Williams collected the TMNT comic books! And this is the same man who went to the first Harry Potter premiere dressed as one of those wizards in green velvet suits! Man, I wish I had a dad like him!

The BBC (or the Blair Broadcasting CoOperation as I like to think of them) are just a bunch of moranic jerks. Sure their opinion sucks a** but we know they're wrong and have no taste, right? ;)

Seriously any opinions about ANYTHING from the BBC haven't ever mattered to me, I'm still bitter towards their treatment of the original TMNT cartoon...but yeah, the BBC do stink. I hate them just for the fact that we're forced to have their crappy channels and pay for it. Whatever happened to freedom of choice? Bah. *spits*

Edited to add that the opinions of ANY "professional" critics don't concern me in the slightest either. Like the BBC those dudes also don't have much going in the good tastes depaartment.

yeah they pretty much like only the movies that are pretty lame or have "big stars", what i *slightly* don't like about Robin Williams is that he once compared Aladdin to Looney Tunes, because he was pissed because they did't pay him enough for Aladdin 1 or something,..........then they gave him a car and he played the genie again XD XD XD XD . i never gave too much importance to that, and now that i know he collected TMNT it never happened to me

If you really read what she said, you can understand it. I mean, we all know that a bunch of stuff was cut from the movie. Don't tell me that you've never finished a fan fic, put it up, then when going back to read it felt like it didn't come out "right". It happens. We can see that it's good, but she knew that there was more to it, stuff that didn't come across.

But I agree that most critics have no idea what they're talking about. It's like that old saying, "Those who can, do. Those who can't, critique." :P

I do smell some bad taste critics. Let's say I saw a really good movie that I would give 5 out of 5 stars but the Critics give it bad reviews. Everytime that happens "I wounder Who hired these clowns!?!"

If I was a critic I would know which is the best movie that I would give a more friendly review for it.

so I don't pay attention to any of their reviews.

Maybe Judith wanted to see MORE character development and maybe more from Raphie, who the hell knows. They could have made it a two hour flick if they went all out with the guys. There was lots of room to do it. They could have done more at the farmhouse. They could have explored how each of the guys dealt with missing Splinter, they only touched slightly on it and didn't bother to show Raph dealing with it. (that was mike on the roof of the barn and beating the bag, not Raph as they wanted to try to make it - ugh!)

So, I'm sure gobs was cut from the movie. I'm sure everyone would like to see a SE DVD with the WHOLE intended movie completely intact, who the @*#&$ cares if it ends up being over two hrs...I can go for it. I'll bet some good stuff was hacked, they need to give us the whole deal. For the fans. I was dissapointed with the current dvds that there was no extras! The crap on them was that, crap. And I can't stand the boobs at BBC, the (@#^@#* cancelled DrWHO! They don't know what their viewers want!! And they charge for a tv license so you can watch crap????? pathetic! (do they still charge tv licenses???)

I don't have the tape or DVD handy right now, but it could easily be a screw up. Mike was filmed beating the hell out of that punching back in the barn (just like in the comic), so it also may have been him (or the costume of him) on top of the barn afterwards. YET! The people remembered it was Raph that was on the roof in the comics and dubbed him over with Josh's voice. AND! Since he was at a distance and the scene was quick, the viewers wouldn't notice it. That is, of course, the normal viewers wouldn't notice. The keen-eyed TMNT fans with their fingah hovering over the pause button will always attempt to catch anything! :)

That's what I don't understand - this whole CGI hype. I mean, yes it can look good in some films and that is a plus for them. But by no means should a movie be given a minus for not having CGI. That's just ridiculous. Since when did CGI become a prerequisite for action movies to look good? This is like saying "You know what? I don't think classics like Casablanca look good these days....Let's CGI them!!!!" Computer graphics can look good in some situations but they certainly don't need to be applied everywhere. And it's too bad these critics have been so spoiled by technological advances, that now traditionally made fight scenes are substandard to them - it just shows weakness of character and major bandwagon tendencies.

Wow, I don't know where to begin with this review. First off the first TMNT movie was not only "not bad" it was good. It's also not a "Comedy, Family" movie it's an action movie.

An excuse for marketing? Has this reviewer seen Pokemon, Power Rangers, Super Mario Bros., Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Garbage Pail Kids, etc? Those are excuses for marketing. This movie had a story, and was largely based on the Mirage comics. As most of you know the comic was not/is not written for children. With the exception of the occassional pizza reference, surfer talk, and April as a reporter: this movie had the balls way back in 1990 to ignore the kiddified version of the TMNT seen in the original cartoon. This movie gets mad respect for that alone.

The best review I've seen for this movie was in Wizard magazine (which named it one of the 50 greatest comic book movies ever) the writers wrote this (not an exact quote):

"Considering how bad of a movie the company could have made and still made a ton of money because of the TMNT's mainstream popularity, this movie is about as good as it gets."

While there is awful CGI: Star Wars prequels, Hulk Dogs from Hulk, etc. There's also REALLY AMAZING CGI like in Lord of the Rings.

CGI, when used correctly, is clearly superior than "good old fashioned special effects". The results speak for themselves.

on the topic of CGI...

I've watched the various Dinosaur specials on the Discovery channel, and have watched how they've improved so much over time.

in Walking with dinosaurs, some of the work was a lil blocky, sounds and movement not perfectly matched.

once they did Dinosaurs in America, Big Al, and so on, you can see how much they improved their designs.

I just got to see most of the Dinosaur Planet special last night (tho i missed white-tip :( ), and was blown away. it looked so real..! I mean, like JP robotics real... :D

its not CGI thats good or bad. its the people who use it.... :D

There's nothing bad about GCI. Today all the big companies have GCI.

What's good about them is it makes lacation making & really difficult things to make.

For me I think it's pretty hopeful for production movies. I know some company still use animatics like Jim Henson's creature in all.

But technology is now a little less challenging and easier.

People do find ways to improve the way of filming.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against CGI by any means. As a matter of fact, I think Beast Wars was an amazing series with really good character visuals. And X-men, Spider Man etc also clearly profitted from this. I just don't think it belongs EVERYWHERE and certainly movie critics shouldn't criticize old movies for not having it. It's almost funny that they'd do something like that.

I can see why some movies would have to have it. Like in "Return of the King," they had to multiply the armies by the thousands in order to make it look convincing. The blue (or green) screen effect has been around for decades, they've just really improved on how to use it!

Now, I've got to say the CGI that I'm getting tired of is the lavish new animated movies either from Dreamworks, Disney, or any of those big companies. Disney fired a huge amount of artists because they're now going completely digital, including storyboard sketches. Anyone that can draw but has no computer experience was sent packing out of their office and I thought that sucked! Yes, CGI is totally awesome and beautiful, but so was the standard animation in the 30's and 40's. So, I guess I have a sort of love and hate relationship with the thing. I'll probably love it more when I get a job with it and it takes me out of my money situation forever!

Yes, most animation companies today now use computers for inking and color. But atleast coloring is more easier by use cell color instead of doing it by paint brush.

Disney's Animation is good. I have only 6 favorite Movies that are Disney. I'm more of Pixar Fan. They been a CGI company for 20 years.

But the evolution of animation and filming goes on. there's alot of people making it easier and making better ways for the big companies. Just wait until I get to start my own cartoon job.

this movie is great considering when it came out, its story has a lot of adventure to it.

I don't know if anyone noticed this but they've actually added your comments to the BBC site (I didn't they'd use them since most of them said they are morons). If you notice at the right of the review, the line you posted about it being great when it came out had been added to balance out their scathing review.

One thing I forgot to say earlier....I HATE CGI. IMHO it's just crap. Good old fashioned special effects are the way to go. CGI is scarily over rated and sorry but I think it looks ghastly. Ugh.

While there is awful CGI: Star Wars prequels, Hulk Dogs from Hulk, etc. There's also REALLY AMAZING CGI like in Lord of the Rings.

CGI, when used correctly, is clearly superior than "good old fashioned special effects". The results speak for themselves.
those great cgi effects are all in thanks to those old fashioned special effects.....thats why they look so good because they are mixed unlike the pile of crap that is the hulk....lord of the rings and many other movies are now learning the errors of there ways and mixing the 2 and what they are coming up with is amazing effects.....

I love CGI when used correctly, and some movies can't be made without it (LotR, Spider-Man etc) but the fact that the turtles were people in costumes made it so much more real. It also meant that a lot of effort had to be put into making them look as best as possible, and it paid off by the bucket load.

I just hope Nemesis in Resident Evil 2 is a suit/puppet for the majority of the film...

You have to realize it was just a movie of it's time. Grown ups in their 40's aren't going to like TMNT. It wasn't geared towards them. Our generation likes the movie because it was part of our youth.

Ten years from now, when Power Rangers is re-released on DVD, it will get trashed. But those 12 yr old kids who liked it then and are 22 ten yrs from now will be loving it still like we enjoy TMNT. It's all about what you grew up with.

Having said all that, TMNT has to be one of the most underrated comic to film adaptations ever. And simply because the concept of fighting turtles probably makes people laugh.

Originally it was for laughs I think.
Too many people out there have closed minds, they can not take TMNT seriously. If they'd just get a clue, open those minds they'd enjoy it. My GRAMMA, who's in her late 70s, she picks up my son's Raph plushie and says they're cute. :-) My grammy has style hehehe... I dunno if I could get her to watch TMNT1 but at least she knows when something is cool.

For crying out loud, the first movie was the best! I enjoyed the part were Casey comes in busting the young "purse snatching pukes". Then Raph comes and fights him. But Casey gets away. The part with Raph yelling the d-word was cool too.

So yeah, I can't believe some of you might think it sucked.

The d-word? The D.A.M.-- yeah. I know. So, did you make a new year's resolution too? I'm trying reeeeal hard not to curse this year...but...heh, just wait till I get behind the wheel of my car! Or maybe I'll just make it a resolution not to curse on Sundays only. Don't think I can hold out much longer!

I already lost. Earthlink disconnects almost every 30 seconds while I'm in the middle of something and I'm paying twice as much as I was with Juno. Yes, I cussed already! There, I admit it! BUT! I can still test my will power on Sunday!

Hey, I know how ya feel! My computer gives me a hard time 24/7 and it's not easy venting off steam. If my dad hears me having the slightest bit of a tantrum (verbally or physically), he'll ask me to get off the computer just so I don't go breaking it.

No offense to the nice british people on the boards

but it seems that british critics (almost rhymed)

always hate movies that don't have a completely english cast

"damn american blokes making bloody crappy movies like casablanca...lets make brilliant movies....i got it!....Johnny English..that oughta show em!"

and remember... there ARE evil people in this world and they all wear the same thing.....Police Uniforms

*rimshot*

Thank you and g'night!

Lol, no offence taken, but I dunno where you got that from. The only time I think critics over here don't like American Movies is if they try and remake British movies that don't need remaking, i.e. The Italian Job (but even then I think that got good writeups. Haven't seen either mind, lol.)

Reminds me of a discussion about the casting of RE2 actually, lol. Someone was talking about the actress playing Jill Valentine and kept saying 'but she's British! Jill Valentine is American! Arrgh!" Kinda forgot the fact that she's an actress and can change her accent, lol.

That's what I hate about reading reviews, whether professional or not, someone's always gotta insult it. Tho I will say that for once, alotta reviewers on Amazon.com seemed to like it, which is a first for Amazon. Most of the time there are lambos in there that just say, "This movie sucks, or that movies sucks" without giving any reason behind it. But alotta ppl DID like this movie, myself included. So that professional reviewer for this review, must be one of the minority.

I'm totally gonna continue this argument.. Mikey in the barn, yes. But on the roof? Definitely Raph. That is undeniably Josh Pais' voice.
bringing this back up.... in the script, it's mikey on the roof.

We've already gone over this. It's Mikey's turtle suit that's on the roof BUT, it's Raph's voice we hear. I think. Once again, I haven't looked at my DVD, but I'm pretty sure that's how it is.
