IDW floods the market with TMNT comics every month, and outside hardcore fans, I wonder who is buying them all. Most of the time (but not always), IDW has:
- The main series/ongoing
- A mini-series (Secret History of the Foot Clan, Shredder in Hell etc)
- A crossover series with TMNT and another property (Ghostbusters, Batman, Power Rangers, Street Fighter, Usagi, He-man, Stranger things, etc crossovers)
- Saturday Morning Adventures
- The Last Ronin series
And now:
Black White and Green
Mutant Nation
Nightwatcher
etc.
And this is not even counting all the trades or collections they put out every month either. Usually on average IDW has 5-6+ new TMNT releases each month. Do you think they are flooding the market? I can't imagine casual fans buying this all.

Well used to the crossovers and the minis were I terchangable
As they would put a hiatus on the minis for the crossover happening like Batman.

It's flooding the market... with #1s. That's the important part: nice, shiny #1#.

I doubt IDW is expecting them to.

Well someone is buying them, IDW isn't a charity.

That would be me, though I buy mostly the 80's Turtles stuff.

I think IDW's best gambit would have been simply doing the new IDW TMNT Vol. 2, #1 followed by... nothing else. Just maybe a solid year+ of just the core, new IDW Vol. 2 running, bringing things back to basics and slowly reintroducing stuff that is decided is worth reintroducing, ignoring what isn't, and bringing in new stuff. That would have had the highest odds of "working," long-term. Just throwing out 5 #1s and stuff like "Nightwatcher"... that's not going to work. I don't see it. It really just smacks of IDW people at the top shouting below decks, "We need more #1s! They sell, and TMNT is like our only anchor left! Just... come up with some TMNT #1s!"
It's pretty much standard practice for your top seller as a publisher. DC puts out a dozen Batman books, Marvel had an entire line of Spider-Man books, and so on.
Milk the fandom. Fleece your reader for as long as they'll tolerate it financially. Of course the same guy who came on here last year and said that "IDW was doing GREAT financially" would also come here and go on about "we publish TMNT books as a service to the fans" but at the end of the day the readership gets fleeced as long as they tolerate it financially.
It's the same across the entire hobby with variant covers. It's so far gone they put random Spider-Man covers on X-Men books and we buy them.
The industry as a whole literally needs to go bankrupt from reader rejection, and reset itself with a grassroots publishing method.

These books are not cheap either. Comics are what around 4.99 an issue now? You have to spend like $5 for one 20 page comic. Now multiply that by picking up multiple issues just for TMNT every month.

Yes, they have to to remain in business.
