we’re told licensing restrictions mean Egmont aren’t planning collections of the fondly-remembered Sonic the Comic, published in the 1990s, edited by Deborah Tate and Richard Burton, whose creative lineup included artists such as the late Nigel Dobbyn, Richard Elson, Mick McMahon, Lew Stringer and others. The stories are, we’re told, no longer considered “on brand”.

Here's what I believe is a list of just what makes Fleetway 'off brand' to Sega

-Amy was a tom boy with attitude who didn't crush hard on Sonic at all, in fact she actually faked it at the start just to get the attention of the Freedom Fighters and join their ranks, also used a crossbow instead of a mallet, and the STC writers wanted her to come out as a lesbian and date an original character called Tekno The Canary.

-Loads of original characters created for Fleetway like the Mystic Cave Pirates, Grimer, the Super Marixo Brothers (who were a trio of Mario-inspired Marx Brothers pastiches), Tekno, Shortfuse the Cybernik, the Omni-Viewer, Metamorpha, The Drakon Empire etc. Sally Acorn also appeared a couple of times, but not as a Princess or a Freedom Fighter, instead she was a news reporter. (Sally herself is already a licensing complication due to Archie)

-Tails' solo adventures included an original zone called "The Nameless Zone" which was a mythological realm that needed defending from sorcerers and dragons. The inhabitants of the Zone looked to Tails as their champion, and believed Sonic (who never learned of the zone in the official comics) was his 'annoying sidekick'. Tails also had allies and adventures in the Chemical Plant Zone as a Blade Runner-inspired alias "The Zone Runner"

-Sonic was a jerkass to virtually everyone with almost no empathy, often dressing down Tails and losing his temper at Porker Lewis when the latter developed PTSD and wanted to retire from freedom fighting.

-Super Sonic being a twisted split personality and the manifestation of Sonic's more unhinged, sociopathic traits.

-Sonic having an actual origin that was tied to Robotnik's own, the two being so close in happier times that it was like 'father and son' and the presence of a back-up A.I of Robotnik's original personality assisting the Freedom Fighters.

-Metal Sonic went by the name 'Metallix' and had a whole empire based off of him that rebelled against Robotnik and almost took over Mobius. Also included an original 'Emperor' Metallix model.

While I wouldn't disagree with the assessment that this comic looks pretty bizarre, even in comparison to other Sonic products from the era, the idea that won't get reprinted for that reason alone has me a bit worried about official preservation. At least with the Archie ones, I can understand it because legally they're partially owned by loon who thinks his input should be the primary way forward for the entire franchise, but this one just seems petty.

I’ve never read any of the Sonic The Comic but I know about it of course. I’ve read a little about it. It’s interesting but Sonic himself sounds awful.

I don’t think reprints are impossible but probably not anytime soon. There’s some on Amazon but they’re pretty expensive.

I don’t think Ken Penders has any control over the Archie comics. Just the characters he made I guess. I didn’t keep up with it so not sure what exactly.

I throughly believe the Freedom Fighters from Archie/SatAm with eventually be brought back and included in new media and possibly the games. They might rework them a little though. At the absolute least they’ll bring back Sally Acorn.

Sega appear to be OK lending permission out to the fans working on the pilot project for Sonic Satam's third seasonYa Sega is fine with a lot of fan projects. I meant I believe they’ll officially come back.

Sonic Mania started as a fan project and the people making SatAm S3 want to pitch it to Sega right, so who knows.
