How the hell is this possible? I feel like I read a different comic than almost everyone else.

It's a "breath of fresh air" to those who never read Mirage TMNT.

Most of these people only ever watched the cartoons and never picked up a TMNT comic before. This is a "culture shock" to them.

[Andrew NDB]

"ZOMG! They actually let the Turtles smack cyborgs to 'death'! And I can't believe that Turtle just stood there and let that Oroku guy drown! So gritty, so dark!"

[IMJ]

This was the kind of story that was a no brainer to sell hard in trade. It generated hype beyond it's readership enough that any non-TMNT readers would be curious about it but not pick up the monthlies after the fact.

Pretty much the only authentic TMNT hype for an incredibly long time.

[Allio]

Not surprising. I think it’s one of those that it came out at the right time. Definitely one of the better “dark knight/Old man” stories
