Man, between Justice League Infinity and THIS, J.M. DeMatteis has been a powerful force for comic cartoon revivals. (It probably helps that he contributed to both shows.)

Besides Morlun, the other new character appearing here that's never before seen in Spider-Man: TAS is...Kaine

This makes sense to follow up on, seeing as Warren did end up with Peter's DNA after MJ's clone died

But when the shows come out do they acknowledge the comic continuations as canon? Did X-men '97 acknowledge the X-men comic cartoon revival stories at all? Or did they ignore them?

You already know the answer to these questions. Also 90s X-Men has had like 3 different comic continuations over the years.

Stuff like this is why I never consider side-media as canon.

In retrospect, I feel really bad for the MJ clone, I know I supposed to but I think it was even sadder than it was likely intended to be. Part of me wishes that had gotten Warren to fix it, maybe she could have gone on to be a good counterpart to Hydro-Man...

So I am sure if this comic does well (it most likely will) we will get ongoing comic series

When they do stuff like this they really need to mimic the actual animated art style for years. It amazes me that the only book I've seen do this was the early issues of the new TMNT animated book.

I agree. That's what kinda gets me about books like the Dreamwave 2003 TMNT comic and The Batman comics. Way too stylized. It clashes worse when the comics themselves advertise the cartoons with on-model art of the characters.

Maybe it can be explained that Peter face change is because some physical changes is happening to him and if this comic series becomes ongoing they should return to how he looked in animated series and say he looked like this in this 4 issues is because he went though some physical changes, what do you guys think about this?

Series isn't even going to resolve how Peter found MJ, it all takes place immediately afterwards. They say they'll resolve it some other time in the editorial notes. MJ proposes to Peter, but he's hesitant to answer, bringing up that he married her clone

Also, Morlun is Kane's father!

Ok, read the full thing now. The art actually does get better, the story is a bit all over the place, but in a fun way.

Ezekiel Simms is an A.I hologram generated by Morlun, he is addressing people in a conference call when he is shortened out by Morlun awakening. Morlon contacts Kaine and tells him to find Peter. Peter and MJ touch down in New York after a spot of web swinging, MJ proposes marriage to Peter after they kiss but Peter is hesitant, they're already married but he's afraid he might lose her again. MJ is annoyed and storms off, Peter is being observed by Kaine.

Kaine returns to his 'father' Morlun where he frees him from his cocoon of webbing. Vermin randomly appears but Morlon kills him and feasts on his energies. Morlun rambles on about spider-totems and Peter's importance.

Mary Jane returns to Peter, storming into his bedroom, ripping the bedsheets off of him and demanding answers. Peter admits he's fearful of the future, but MJ tells him they can make their way through it all. She proposes a second time and Peter says 'yes'.

Spidey battles Mark Raxton, aka the Molten Man, very strategic feat here. Peter and MJ arrange a dinner with their Aunts. Aunt Anna seems to have put on a few pounds. She still hates Peter just like in the cartoon. Peter says the marriage still feels 'brand new' to him (hur hur). Peter's looking into getting into teaching.

Suddenly, Kaine attacks. He and Peter clash outside, Peter holds his own against Kaine for a bit, but ultimately Kaine gets the upper hand and nearly defeats Peter, but is defeated when he senses just how strong Peter's love for MJ actually is. He flees, returning to Morlun, but Morlun turns on Kaine and destroys him, feeding off his energy also. Morlun then enters a lab containing cloning pods and begins growing another Kaine

So I will read it later today so I did not read what you wrote in spoilers but maybe this Morlun is connected to other Spider-Man universes

So I read it
so it looks like this is same Morlun that appeared in other universes in comics because he keeps refering to Peter as Spider-Totem

The writer has said Morlun isn't the same as the other one, and has a different origin

I know I'm late to the party, but I finally got to read this one and I bought issue 2 just this past weekend. It was fine, the main nitpicks were the art (mostly Peter Parker) and wishing they used a classic villain instead of Molten Man. Especially with the implication that Spider-Man had defeated him several times before.

Thoughts on issue two. The comic sure likes to use the more obscure loser villains from Spider-Man's rogues gallery that never appeared on the show.

Issue three was solid, Morlun's new origin is a lot easier to swallow than cosmic variant vampire.

Pity MJ isn't wearing a fetching nightdress like she was shown to wear in the cartoon, just a plain t-shirt.

Does Kaine have the memories of Hydro Man and that's why he's got a crush on MJ?

Finally caught up to this, right before issue 4 is out. Hopefully my email makes it next issue.

Not sure how Morlun would get Hydro Man DNA. Also Kaine's 'love' for MJ feels more like the actual strong love Parker has for MJ and not the more obsessive crush Hyrdo Man had on her.

Mayor? There has to have been a time jump somewhere. The show was good with continuity so this seems forced, out of place with no explaination. Funny how the previous issue was a drop in quality due to being explaination heavy now I need an explaination for how Wilson became mayor in this continuity. I am not opposed to it, I just want it to make sense.

I mean there have to had been a sizeable time skip. Not only did it take Spider-Man some unknown amount of time to find MJ and bring her back... he also fought all-new villains to the point that it's become routine for him. We never seen him face Molten Man and those animal guys in the show, but by the time we see them in the comic he's already overly familiar with them and tired of dealing with them.

Spider-Man'94#4

Morlun in the guise of Ezekiel presents Project Lokka to Wilson Fisk and guests. Fisk is now Mayor. Project Lokka, named after Molrun's homeland, is a solar power plant which Morlun intends to use to spread clean suffient power across the east coast. The plant will be launched in a matter of weeks.

Spider-Man learns from Kraven that Mariah Crawford, Calypso, is dead and that the serum Peter gave her to cure her mutation weakened her cells, she passed in Kraven's arms. Kraven then finds out from reading Crawford's notes that she was aware the serum was killing her, and that it was decaying the cells in his body too. He hastes the end by drinking the serum and sought out Morlun, whom he had heard was murdering innocents.

Kaine talks to Mary Jane (armed with a baseball bat) and reveals all of Morlun's cloning has opened his psyche more and more, allowing him to recall all his previous lives and to reach out to the minds and hearts of others, learning more about them. Mary Jane asks Kaine to confront Morlun and save Peter. They share a sweet moment together before Kaine returns to the lab.

Peter and Kraven battle some mutations at Morlun's lab. Peter prevents Kraven from taking any of their lives but Morlun arrives and kills Kraven's pet lion before draining Kraven of his life energy. Kaine arrives to stop him but Morlun kills him....or so he thinks, then Kraven springs back to life, mutating further and further...becoming what appears to be THE MAN THING (or at the very least, a Swamp Thing knock-off)
