I Miss The Old Ninja Turtle Websites Man

I miss mikeystmnt.com I miss ninjaturtlesnetwork.com I miss when the Technodrome got updates at times, I miss Turtle Boy's Sewer, I miss members.aol.com/turtle7703 why I remember that because it lead to Fogu.com and the Golden Underwear. I miss the og Mirage ninjaturtles.com. I miss my very own website, Gah GeoCities left and a AOL and so many fan sites down the drain.

Remember the Ring of Green that just felt like endless amount of TMNT fan websites. I hate what the internet has become.:tsad:

Yeah, it used to be wonderful, especially as a kid back then. "I wonder who has updated their TMNT fanpage today?" and just going around the Ring of Green and seeing what's new everyday. And people would update them regularly. Either with fanfics or art or just general musings about TMNT news or whatnot. And if there weren't websites then there was people's TMNT Livejournals and all that. It was a GREAT time to be on the internet. Other fandoms had similar things.

Now there really isn't any of that anymore. No fan pages, just things like cold Reddit. And the same people who once cultivated these super personalized websites are now just screaming about Trump everyday on their cookie-cutter Facebook page, maybe. If they're even bothering to do that.

Yeah, they all had real personality. Even the Mirage site was so much fun. You could spend hours clicking around and Berger always replied to my barely intelligible emails I would send him as a youngster. What a great dude.

I still love this forum, but outside of here it's what? Reddit and Facebook? Impersonal, homogenous and heavily influenced by the algorithm. SAD!

I mean the people who were making those fansites were teenagers at the time who had grown up with the initial wave of Turtlemania. Now those same people are in their 40's so obviously they don't have the time anymore that they did when they were 16-17 years old making their TMNT fansites. The late 90's and early 2000's were over 25 years ago now, just think how young everyone was then.

And as said, the younger generation just prefers to discuss things on twitter, reddit, tumblr, etc. than make a site over it.

I still like to update my old fan site, though I will admit I'm a little anal about the way I update my files. I have this peculiar form of OCD that causes me to get obsessed with the exact time I create and save files and I how I have them in a certain order in my personal folder. Anyway, I'll be bringing my site back around April 20th, a couple weeks earlier than I previously planned.

Buslady passed away some years ago at the age of... 47 iirc? She couldn't have been too old.

oh for sure i was in my teens running Pizza Powers Layer, and i think mainly in part is that a lot of places like geocities and angelfire shut down.

I honestly can't remember the site name now and maybe it's already mentioned in here and the last thread; but I do remember one wiht a fanfiction series that continued the original series by bringing Shredder and Krang back to power and even brought Dregg and Mung back one last time. It ended with a cliffhanger withShredder and Krang taking Splinter back to the Technodrome back to Dimension X and Leo vowing to make them pay once and for all. The final story was titled "Vernon Saves The Day", but it went unfinished and we never get to see how. Just that Spkinter is the one who mentally trains him. The story arc had lots of Technodrome action like in The Big Blowout or Shredder Triumphant.

Fan pages are slowly making a comeback, they're now called indie web. It's catching on, but it will of course be limited in its grown as people like it or not just prefer living in a "walled garden" of content and not find stuff. Old internet died with smartphones and normies being able to access it easily.

The way we got to today really began with Web 2.0, people got broadband and switched to blogs having blogs which incentivised people to post "news" daily or worthless content instead of Web 1.0 classic sites that you had sections with different information. You now had blog posts which in the past would've been separate sections of a site that you would see "growing" but now they were easier to lose through daily entries and seen as "old content" being pushed back by non important news that would eventually be dated.

Before monetization on the internet was a thing, it really was more of a passion project for people. But once google adsense made it easy for people with blogs to make money, the wrong people were now making the fan sites. And even the good folk that were making them switched to prioritized news cycles that would give them clicks and money.

That's when communities started to move away from bulletin boards and forums to just comment sections of blog posts. The deathbed was as Facebook grew and you now had "groups" you could join, people would go there and it slowly sucked away people who'd post or create sites to go there. When Reddit became a thing the hardcore fans went to those places while casual fans stayed on FB and the like. We now have Discord and Twitter communities and Tiktok ones for each franchise and all are different on their own.

It's weird how something can become a huge Pokemon trendon TikTok but Pokemon Twitter is having their own separate thing going on with memes. It's not too indifferent from when people would post on say on one pokemon forum or another and each one had their own feel. Same with TMNT, I think this is the only forum left really but each community is different. R/TMNTbeing the liberal half of the technodrome. If you go on twitter it's mostly people who just wage politics using TMNT. Facebook groups and Discord servers feel the most chill when it comes to TMNT content IMO.

I mean if you really want a "new' TMNT site like the old one just go to ResidentEvil7s site before it's taken offline. People still make webpages on hosts similar to Angelfire, tripod and GeoCities. I know of one called Neocities, for example. I guess Wordpress also can serve that purpose but seems more like a blog-centered host?

Of course, fansites are much less common nowadays than back in the day.

Plus, most people aren't going to learn Python, CSS, HTML to a deep degree just so they can make a personal website of their own as a side-hobby, let's face it.

Blogs were pretty popular 20 years ago, but they didn't hurt the popularity of message boards/forums at all like social media has done since 2009 or so.

Youtube in 2006-2009 was highly different than what it is today. It was mostly a place to listen to music and watch older anime, cartoons and tv shows and the occasional video of someone like AVGN or Smosh. Companies and tv networks did not start making official youtube accounts until 2010 or so. I think WWE only created its official youtube account in 2013 or so?

I still remember when Youtube did not belong to Google. Its buyout was all over the news at time.

The "centralisation" of the internet has made it a more functional but yet more boring place. Everything is centered around social media nowadays. "Everyone" visits the same websites and uses the same services. And fansites are much rares these days. Plus, algorithms will only show you stuff they think you want to see.

Above all else, I miss the days when Ninjaturtles.com was active, & maintained by the Mirage staff, who also had a variety of blogs all their own, richly packed with concept art & other fun photos & documents from the archives. They all still have a wealth of that material, do regular commission work, & use social media, yet seldom share any of it. Depresses me like you can't believe!

& of course, I wish our community here at The Technodrome Forums had remained as passionate & lively as it was a decade or so ago, but that's time for you. Most have moved on or maxed out. Even I don't feel compelled to put in the effort. For as large & busy as the internet is, it sure feels dead sometimes. & yes, I know about the Dead Internet Theory. :tlol:

I got a lot of help with my HTML coding from AOL. I had to search the net for an old school version of the program so I could continue to use the text document feature that helps me write out stuff for my web-site via log files, which are similar to text files. Also when I helped Andrew write "TMNT: Deliverance" he really helped shape how I made my own fan fictions.

:tlol: Yea, I think I might've brought that up at one point as we were writing the story. The funny thing is that fan fiction was a sequel to "TMNT: Transcension" which was a huge multiverse cross-over story that was written in the late 90s just a couple years before Peter Laird revived the Mirage comics and 4Kids came out with their animated reboot.
