I don't remember a thread like this ever being made.

For me, Mondo Gecko is a really cool name. Whoever came up with it deserves an applause. Metalhead comes right after. It's a robotic Turtle named after the sub-culture of people who love heavy metal music. Leatherhead is also a good name for an alligator hehe. He closes the top 3.

Hoourable mentions:

Shredder. It's simple and makes logical sense for him to the named that, but it's one of those things you have to think about it.

And I guess we should also give Laird and Eastman some credit for naming the Turtles themselves. On paper, giving Italian names to NINJAs trained by the pet rat of a Japanese man sounds like a ridiculous idea... but you'd be blind to claim it did not work perfectly. Especially when you factor in their nicknames/shortened forms. It wouldn't really work well with names like Akira or Sasuke, now, would it?

Eh, I guess we have different tastes. This is a very subject question, after all.

Other than Leatherhead, which I already mentioned, Fugitoid is the one I agree the most with. But Karai and John Bishop, really? I do like a lot of Japanese names, but Karai isn't really one of them. Bishop was fine as a standalone name, I guess. There was no need to add a generic first name like John to it.

Obligado? It just sounds like "Obrigado" which is the Portuguese word for "thank you". I understand that a non-Portuguese speaker will not know that and see it as unique-sounding foreign word, however.

Nobody? Lame.

Old Hob? As opposed to New Hob? What's the origin of that name?

Savanti Romero? Sounds like two random Italian names put together hehe

Don't have much of an opinion on the other names you listed.

Old Hob is name for the devil and Savanti Romero is a reference to the director and SFX guy of Dawn of the Dead respectively, if you had to know.

Rocksteady is a super cool name. It's catchy and sounds like the perfect name for a Rhinoceros even though the name is based off a genre of music.

Everyone can agree its a cooler name than Bebop. Rocksteady to Bebop is like what Batman is to Robin, they go perfectly together but individually, there is a clear winner.

Null.

None of the gibberish nonsense names. F*CK TOKKA!!! It’s not from a “tribal river language”!

We should ask Kevin Eastman what drum-beating and psychedelic-ingesting exotic tribe he has holidayed with

Rahzar's name is based on razor. Tokka means gamera from Godzilla.

I have no idea what you mean with Tokka. The name sounds nothing like "Gamera" and that's not even from Godzilla. The turtle from the Godzilla franchise I could find (and pre-date Tokka) is named Kamoebas, so that's clearly not it either.

Yes, but Bebop has a cooler design. I think we can agree on that?

The "kka" at the end of Tokka's name is based on Godzilla and the Gamera kaiju. There's a reason why in the Nick 2012 cartoon, Ciro made Tokka a giant space kaiju Turtle. Tokka is basically based on gamera and godzilla. That's why the 2012 series did that homage.

Rahzar is like a razor as in his razor sharp fangs, similar to Slash being named Slash because he slashes things...or at least used to.

Sergeant Banana's is such a ridiculously fun name because he's a gorilla. Shame he never appeared anywhere.

I messaged Kevin Eastman on Facebook and he wrote back:

“Tokka was originally named TOKKKA. We were originally going to reveal that Shredder fought for Japan in WWII alongside Nazis and was a vicious racist. Rahzar was a cross between “racist” and “razor”. The studio wouldn’t allow it since they were going for a lighter tone than the first movie”

Interesting!

I guess I was right about Rahzar being mostly based on razor. Godzilla has a lot of World War II imagery, given he brings up the Nazi thing and Japan's movies with Gamera and Godzilla at the time being about the fallout of nuclear war, I think it would fit.

But man, spelling Tokka with a KKK instead of two KK's? How on earth would they think that would pass the censors? I'm pretty sure Shredder doesn't hate black people.

No, if anything, they're some of the dumbest names ever. Aside from "The Butcher", all the names you listed there are either boring or really stupid.

For what it’s worth, I like when the TMNT fight mobsters, and I like the mob the turtles go up against in the Fred Wolf series as well, McFingers, Turtelli, McMutt, they all fit in perfectly with the world they’re portrayed in.

I’m a Mafia movie head from way back. Part of the reason I love the Image run is the Puzzorelli arc.

Most Mutant names were meant to be catchy for kids to remember, it's the same way Pokemon names were changed in English to be more memorable.

You have Scale Tail, Merdude, Mona Lisa, Wingnut, Hothead, Scumbug, Groundchuck, Wyrm, Dirtbag, Monty Moose, etc.

They all really remind me of Pokemon names now when I think back to the old Playmates mutants. Kind of makes sense since they market these to kids and they want kids to remember the names so they make them catchy and easy to say.

There is some TMNT/Pokemon overlap if you think about it. 4kids, Veronica Taylor and some other VAs. Caravaggio. Massive success with youngsters in the 90’s and conversely hated/misunderstood by boomers trying to play the satanic panic card. Nintendo legends. Autistic fan bases. Unova is NYC.

The list goes on.

The FW cartoon really knew how to be so absurd to the point of being able to embrace said absurdity at times. :P

Speaking of that particular episode, I always thought J. Gordon Hungerdunger was a funny name.

DONATELLO: "They've been turned into Hungerdunger zombies!"
MICHELANGELO: "Whoa... and that's the worst kind!"
