View Full Version : How would the original cartoon Turtles react to 9/11 in 2001?

If you assume the Fred Wolf cartoons seasons take place roughly in each year they aired in, we haven't really seen them past 1995/1996.
Even aside from that, how would the Turtles react to 9/11 happening? Now naturally they would be horrified, as were people in real life, but do you think the Turtles would especially be distraught that they couldn't save close to 3,000 lives in their home city from an act of terrorism? I like to assume all the events in real life happened in their world as well.
ESPECIALLY when you remember the twin towers were actually a plot point in one episode of Season 3 where Shredder/Krang were using it to repower the Technodrome.

I'm curious as to whether they would immediately suspect Shredder and Krang as being responsible or whether they would realise this is too much for them.

I am too lazy to check. I think I recall David Wise saying once that the writers were told to stop using recognizable NY landmarks after the first few seasons (like the twin towers or statue of liberty), I'm not sure the reason but we did stop seeing real life landmarks after awhile.

Dregg would definitely have done it, he was willing to burn down the whole planet with a sunspot.
The towers also were a plot in Enter The Fly, Shredder was planning to put a force field around it.

Strange...
But perhaps it was for the best. Had the Twin Towers been shown many times, they'd probably get censored/removed when the episodes first came out on DVD.
I think they were in a couple of episodes. Enter The Fly and the season 3 finale, Big Blow Out.They were not censored/removed ever, were they?

No, they're on the DVDs. I mean how would they even censor them? You think Lionsgate was going to take the time to somehow cut or edit scenes when they put all the episodes in VHS quality on discs?

You're right lol, but weren't the towers edited out of some movies and tv shows that came out within a year after the attacks? They also got removed off a couple of video games, didn't they?

I just checked and they’re not explicitly shown. But all the cityscape is replaced with futuristic buildings so there’s no way to tell. Oh well, here’s a short fanfic I just wrote imagining their reaction:
SPLINTER: My sons… I fear my ancient enemy, Oroku Saki has returned! Many buildings have been destroyed, just as Channel 6 all those years ago!
LEONARDO: Shredder’s still lost in Dimension X, master. The news says it was some dastardly villains called Al-Qaeda and it’s up to the Armed Forces to stop them!
DONATELLO: Al-Qaeda? Get real, Leonardo! I ran the calculations, it’s physically impossible for an aluminum airplane to take down a skyscraper, and jet fuel doesn’t melt steel beams.
MICHELANGELO: Yeah, bud. And the FBI finding the hijackers passport in perfect condition a couple blocks away is like, mondo bizzaro.
LEONARDO: Are you two serious? This is crazy!
MICHELANGELO: Oh so serio-so! And check this out [walks towards computer room]
LEONARDO: Where are you going? And it’s not like you to be so quiet Raphael. Don’t tell me you’ve lost it too!
RAPHAEL: Patriot act! Turtle comms are bugged! You won’t hear a peep outta- [interrupted by Michelangelo exclaiming from another room]
MICHELANGELO: [reading a widely published ABC News article that has since been scrubbed from the internet] Raving ravioli! Bros look!
LEONARDO: Michelangelo, x out of that nonsense! President Bush would never let something like that happen!
RAPHAEL: [Looking at screen] talking turtles and brains from Dimension X, he can buy. But Dancing Israelis? Not happening. Give me a break!
SPLINTER: [sighing heavily] we should have never gotten internet down here…

Seinfeld's finale came out in 1998, so only 3 years before the attacks.

It was genuinely the greatest travesty of our lifetimes. I think I was only...15 (?) or so when it happened, and even as a young teen I knew the world would never be the same. This isn't like some random war between third world countries nobody cares about, this is the United States of America, and seeing 3000 innocent people (both on the planes and buildings) killed for no reason.
You don't attack the United States of America and get away with it. George W. Bush was too lenient, honestly. If Trump was president back then he'd probably nuke every country in the middle east whether they were involved or not.

Despite your trolling, you did unintentionally raise an interesting hypothetical scenario in your 2nd paragraph.
How would USA have reacted to the 9/11 attacks had Trump been the president at the time. Remember he lost workers in the attacks as well. At least one of his companies had an office in the Twin Towers. I remember watching an old video of him talk to the news back then on youtube

Didn't Israel warn the US several months before 9/11 that Bin Laden was planning some sort of attack against the US but the American government basically dismissed their warning? Or is that just another one of the many conspiracy theories regarding 9/11?

Damn, even Putin? Something tells me he'd not have warned Biden if the 9/11 attacks happened during his presidency.
Normally I don't use wiki as a source, but it's late and that article seems to have links to credible sources. And I don't find it hard to believe most of those warnings, anyway.
Anyway, I know "JET FUEL CAN'T MELT STEEL BEAMS" and "Bush did 9/11" are believed by most of the terminally online, but to me the explanation is much simpler: It simply was a big blunder by USA. The biggest security fiasco in its history. Also, airport security used to be a JOKE in the US before 9/11, from what I've read. It was much laxer than in Europe, for example. Ironically, after 9/11, it's become much stricter and no considers American airports to be a pleasant experience since then.

No? Well then why did Lucky Larry Silverstein miss work that day? After taking out “terrorism insurance” earlier that year after finding out how expensive the asbestos removal would be?
Why was George Bush smoking cigars at the White House with Bandar Bush (the Saudi royal) on September 13th?
Why did the Pentagon fail that audit so miserably?
Why would Bush and Cheney only testify to the 9-11 Committee if they could be together?

Both things can be true at the same time, my man. Why do you think a terror attack with airplanes against skyscrapers hasn't happened since then?
Airport security changed completely after 9/11. You wouldn't know this because you've never even left New York. You did mention you used to work at an airport, but that means you might only be familiar with how they are nowadays. Had you traveled as a kid before 9/11, you'd know the difference.
Here in Europe, airport security also changed too since then. I remember when you didn't have to separe your liquids from your hand luggage. when getting past security at the airport. Also, like many kids from my generation and before, I was able to visit the cockpit and meet the captain and his co-pilot on a flight when I was little. That's no longer possible since 9/11, I think. Poor kids.
Also, the Twin Towers did get attacked in the early 90s. Trucks with explosives were placed underneath them or something. So it's not like those buildings were strangers to terrorism until 9/11.

I do prefer entertaining these theories over those who claim the airplanes were holograms(yes, I've seen people saying that before) or that it was impossible for those buildings to collapse after being hit by airplanes. Structural engineers have explained before that the towers actually held up quite well after being hit by the planes. Even if they ended up collapsing in the end.
I can understand people being skeptical about WTC7's collapse, but still...

Primitive cavemen don't learn how to fly planes into buildings. That is about as common sense as you can get.
You also have to look at who benefits from these attacks.
America did not benefit, thousands of innocent lives lost, and they were dragged into wars that cost a lot of money and troops.
The Muslim world did not benefit, much of it was destablised and destroyed because of the invasions conducted on the basis of 9/11.
Israel was the biggest beneficiary of 9/11 because America was doing the heavy lifting for them in destroying their enemies in the Middle East after the attacks, further entrenching it as the dominant power in the Middle East.

I'd assume they'd first suspect Shredder and Krang, but then realize just wrecking the towers wouldn't help power the Technodrome or any of their usual plans. Also such a huge loss of life (assuming the buildings in the FW version weren't randomly empty that day cause of insert bad joke here) wouldn't fit the MO of any of their villains.
Going to war is too big for them. They'd probably just watch the news for updates and let the rest of the world handle it once they see it was more 'real' than the usual super villain tomfoolery. If anything, they'd be on the lookout to stop any of their villains or mad scientists that would try to take advantage of the chaos to do their own crimes. I mean, a city in chaos and despair would be the perfect time for Big Louie to start robbing stores, or the Rat King to unleash his armies of rats.

There were no Twin Towers at all during the 2k3 series. I think they already built the new ones near the end of the Nick toon? Or at least one of the new towers?
Anyway, The 2k3 Turtles are the only ones that could have lived through 9/11 and have clear memories of it, since the series premiered one year after the attacks or so. Nick Turtles would have been babies during 2001-2002, so there's no way they could remember the attacks.
Sure, the FW ones could have as well, since the attacks happened 5 years or so after Fred Wolf ended, but for all we know, they could have died meanwhile. While we can be 100% sure that did not happen to the 2k3 Turtles before the 2003 toon premiered lol

JMS was a great Spider-Man writer, but he also was responsible for some of the franchise's all-time stinkers too (though not all of them were his fault)
When you are watching a fictional show with a specific setting that isn't political, you kind of have to ignore that real life geopolitics are happening there or that future events of the world would've happened. It just breaks the show's reality if you do that.
So yeah, it never happened in the FW show, now could they have been destroyed by say a villain? Sure but it wouldn't have had the same impact, it would've been something like when Shredder destroyed the Channel 6 building, short term consequences.
I think it'd be more interesting to know if the towers ever existed in the 2003 cartoon since this was after it happened. I'm guessing the answer would be no just easier to avoid that whole topic but at least you can have a debate.

If fictional stories can not ignore real life geopolitics, then given the current state of New York, the Turtles Turtles might be wanted for attack specific criminals, and they might eventually become so disillusioned with the city's distorted morality that they decide to leave for Northampton or somewhere else.
