Today marks 10 years since that fateful day. Any interesting thoughts on this one? I only saw it because one of the 2012 DVDs came with a free ticket
Anyone know whatever happened to samxsteel?

Bebop & Rocksteady's characterization was fun, & their designs were solid, but those two being the ONLY thing PD ever "got right" really speaks to to how flawed their take was overall. You'd think it would be pretty hard to mess up Casey Jones, yet they made him a shaved-head police officer. That alone made this thing irredeemable. Whatever merits it may have had on its own are hard to even give credit for knowing it's all predicated on the even more abysmal disaster that came before it. This one "at least" had a fairly cohesive narrative, not suffering from all the re-writes & re-shoots its predecessor did, yet they still did nothing with Shredder, put too much emphasis on April/Vern, & portrayed everyone like a dummy.

So far, this is the only TMNT movie to actually piss me off. Secret of the Ooze, Mutant Mayhem and even the previous PD movie are all far better than this piece of bovine fecal matter. Not sure if TMNT III is better on a technical level but even if it isn't, I can't muster the same rage for it as this movie inspired.
I've had it here on 4k disc for years now. Watched it one time. I dunno... maybe due for another watch if I can get through it.

Still haven't seen.
Anyone remember the thread for the first trailer here in the forums?
After the 2014 movie you'd expect it to be negative but it was mostly positive. That trailer just hit all the right moments and made the movie seem like it could be a lot of fun.
The movie while changing things to make up for the criticisms of the first film.., the biggest flaw was they decided to appeal to a much younger audience, the dialogue and plot all suffered. So you ended up with a movie that, while having less "sins," somehow was less entertaining than 2014.

It sure was a great time to be around the board in 2016, when it hit. For me, it was like TPTB reached out and grabbed every single thing I hate about McTMNT™, put them all into a great big bin at the same time... and then when the movie failed bigtime I got to watch it all burn in front of me.
There were and I'm sure still are plenty of apologists for it, though. "Fans were feeling burned by the 2014 movie, that's why nobody showed up!" and so on.

Maybe I'm alone but still prefer it over the first one.
Mind you, it's entirely because the Turtles felt much more like actual people and the stars of this one. (First movie made them feel like hollow props for Fox to direct her wooden acting at. Found that depressing.) Some tweaks to designs and lighting helped a tad. However, the story is still really subpar, so don't get me wrong, I still agree it's no great movie by any measure. But I enjoyed the brothers more in this sequel.

I’ve never even seen this whole movie. Only TMNT movies I can say that about.

It's weird they just got everything wrong with these movies in general. It shouldn't have been that hard to make a decent live-action TMNT movie in the 2014-2016 era.
- Why are the Turtles giant Hulks? How are they ninja's if they're huge?
- Why the hell do they have nostrils?
They couldn't even get the Turtles themselves right, let alone everything else.
The Hulk Turtles actually worked in that continuity rather well. I hated the hulk turtles but liked them after watching the movie. They also got the dynamic between the brothers very well. The movie does feel like it was inspired too much by the Bay Transformer movies so more of a late 2000s movies than a true mid 2010s movie. But we're talking about the sequel here.
I remember many regulars from the forum that had hated 2014 were actually excited for OOTS, I can even remember Roseangelo being excited for it. I was excited for it. It just somehow sucked more than the first.

Making Casey a whiny bitch cop really pissed me off.
Also shredder was wasted in this movie he didn’t even fight the turtles. Just glad he wasn’t wearing robot armor like the first one.
The problem with these movies nowadays is that they make no effort to make them look truly photo real. it's just a cartoon fest blended into real world photography.
I really miss the days when CGi was used to make something look as real as possible but yield real-life camera movement, etc.
The end of Out of the Shadows is crazy because in many ways that entire sequence with Krang is what we always wanted to see on film, but by the time we get there you have NO sense that you are watching a movie anymore rather than a cgi cartoon with hybrid textures.

I was insufferable when this came out, I shilled the s*it out of it.
I recall trying to make a fanedit of it not long after it's DVD release and shared samples, but I can't recall at all anymore what my intent was with editing. I don't think I completed it.

You were probably trying to cut the garbage out of it. But like that supposedly "good" Batman & Robin fan edit, you'd end up with probably only a 10 minute movie.

I'd have felt the same way if I felt for an instant that Paramount would learn the right lessons from it's failure. It's pretty clear that their take away would be that they didn't lean into the Fred Wold and silly tone enough. Mutant Mayhem and this proposed Sonic-fied TMNT would suggest that's exactly what they though.
There were and I'm sure still are plenty of apologists for it, though. "Fans were feeling burned by the 2014 movie, that's why nobody showed up!" and so on.
Honestly, that's the most dangerous narrative that formed around the movie to try and explain why what they thought was going to be a sure-fire flopped so hard. People didn't go because they were put off by the first one not being quite so overly kiddie.
As much as I hate to say it but the 2014 movie not only opened well but had decent up against Guardians of the Galaxy. Even huge promo campaigns that screamed the movie was a huge apology for ever trying to treat the property of even smidgen of serious-nous or not having the Fred Wolf characters front and centre, people still failed to show up for the sequel.
Maybe I'm alone but still prefer it over the first one.

There are some genuine things it has over the first. Mostly that not having a troubled production means it all 'flowed' better. It doesn''t feel like three different movies spliced together with duct tape like the first.
While I've never thought the '87 show was the best basis for a live action TMNT movie series, As someone who grew up on it, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least curious about what that approach would be like. For what it's worth Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang were done pretty faithfully. The part of me that feels nostalgic for the old cartoon was mostly satisfied with how they were portrayed. (Even if it's not something I was ever chomping at the bit to see)
I actually thought the subplot about the mutagen potentially turning them into humans was handled pretty tastefully. When I watched the trailers I instantly expected the worst but it was ok. In fact, we should have seen more of the turtles discussing this in the movie than the stupid police infiltration scene or excursions to the planetarium.
It's flaws are way more unforgivable. Considering that it had a much smoother production the story is still a mess. Considering the movie was a blatant rip off a movie with a very basic plot, how did they mess it up? Things need explaining are glossed over. Things are explained that we didn't even need to know. Then, there's stupid stuff like Looney Tunes physics. The whole humans having animal genes in their blood. Casey Jones not resembling Casey Jones in any way, shape, or form. The real kicker is how weak the action scenes are. Given Bay was a pretty active producer on both movies it's pretty shocking. Like, the 2014 movie's action were too over the top of what you'd expect from TMNT but they had teeth - Out Of The Shadows makes the Fred Wolf show look pretty edgy by comparison.

Oh god, I already forgot about that stuff. How every human has randomly different animal DNA deep down.

I find it hilarious that they'd even write that in. It's like a creationist's view of how evolution works.

I will never, ever forget that idiocy, never...

Well, a creationist will typically allow for "change within the 'created' kinds" because they can't ignore the effects of selective breeding, so technically they have a better understanding of evolution because at least they're able to understand that pigs and rhinos don't somehow have a common descendant.
Seriously though, why the hell not just have pig and rhino DNA samples in the lab or something?

I think it was to make the mutagen less stupid than the Fred Wolf mutagen with "touch an ant, become Ant-Man" but they didn't realize that what they did instead was many times more stupid.

This is inevitably the way of all movies out of Hollywood.

They really should have just gone with the contact angle and put more explanation to it. No need for people to keep trying to reinvent things, why not just dig further into what's already there?
Still requires suspension of disbelief, but at least explaining that mutagen causes the DNA from, say, a few microscopic skin cells to aggressively invade your being and bond with your own DNA might be more plausible in the TMNT universe than... one of your grandparents some millennia ago f***ed an ancient rhino and they somehow birthed a hybrid.

Don’t make a damn movie adaptation if you’re ashamed of the source material!

If they were actually doing that at all then they wouldn't even need to worry about de-sillying the Fred Wolf mutagen because they wouldn't need any in the movie.
I wouldn't advocate for it, but probably the 2012 ooze is the best way to go is if your goal it just a lot of mutants that are ready to go and sentient right away. At least with that you can go, "It's alternate dimensional goo that just kind of does whatever!" though obviously they went way too far by allowing it to mutant inanimate objects.

The most underrated TMNT movie. I like it way more than the 2014 movie. The fact we finally got Krang and Bebop & Rocksteady in a theatrical TMNT movie is a nice bonus.

I will never understand why anyone really claims this movie is "underrated" or "at least better than the previous one", they may give reasons but I don't really trust those reasons. If any TMNT deserves to be ridiculed as much as possible, it's this one.

That's like saying you're happy your soup "finally" had a fly in it after hearing jokes about it all your life.
