Was the older one funnier than the new one or vice versa. I'd like your opinions. I'd also like to know if anyone already posted this.

New one is funnier.

Depends what you define as funny heh - in the old there was something about the way the characters sometimes cudn't care less about their situation - or over-cared - but the new is... better funny.

Well the old show had a few funny stuff, like Shredder thinking he's Michelangelo, but half the time it got a little too stupid/childish. I kinda prefere the humour in 2003.

The new show is genuinely funny when it wants to be, while the old show at times would just make me laugh. I think there's a difference.

The old show was mostly slapstick humor and puns.
The new show contains situational humor and fanboy humor.
IMHO the New Show's humor is far more intelligent and genuinely funny than the old show.

Some of my favorite lines,
Casey: I wanna complain about one of your products!
Reception: TCRI doesn't manufacture toasters, sir.
Casey: Oh yeah? Says it right here!
Reception: That says 'RITC' in crayon, sir.
Casey: I wanna see the head geek, or I'm gonna take this place apart! (Draws his bat and starts smashing up the lobby) Gimme a toaster, or give me death!
Raph: We kinda met your forcefeild.
Mike: And Raph kinda broke it.
Mike: That thinglooks like a giant toliet! Which I guess makes me the tidey bowl turtle...
Hun: This is some nice steel, hows about telling me who gave them to you?
Raph: Yo Moma.
Mike: Did Shredder wake up one morning and say, HEY HERE'S AN IDEA: MUTANT CLONES OF ME, REALLY UGLY ONES!
Raph: What is that? The ninjustice league?
Don: More like the Shelltastic Four.
Leo: The sewer heros.
All: (Laugh)
Leo: Whoa! Sensei keep that flame away from Mikey! He ate a whole chilli pizza for dinner!
Mike: C'mon Leo, move it, I don't wanna be staring at your butt anylonger than I have to!
Raph: Teacher's pet.
Leo: Ninja drop-out.
Raph: GRRR!
Leo: GRRR!
Splinter: Let us see you clean up for a change, this chamber is filthy!
Splinter: I believe you.
Leo: Is this another lesson, how you sence the truth, senisei?
Splinter: No, this is called 'trusting your gutt'
Me personally would pay to say a line like this,
Hun: Your choice, freek; you can talk or you can let your DNA do the talking for you!
__________________________________________________ _____________________
I also think The Next Mutation had some funny lines,
Donatello: (About the vampire's heart) It is so gross----- Can I touch it?

I like the humour in the new show better.
Casey: Friends of yours?
Raph: Brothers, actually.
Casey: ...I can see the family resemblence.
Mikey: I'm the pretty one!
-Meet Casey Jones
The way how the show has a darker look to brings out how funny the jokes are. With mikey sauin' "I'm the pretty one!" an' all when they're all dark makes it hillarious. :tlol:

one more thing which is cool, is how they are so up to date, Like real humans. Forexample: Mikey has a DVD collection and is trying to qoute sentences from all kinds of movies and stuff. Not always funny sentences, Like this.
Mikey: There are somethings, man was never meant to tamper with.
Leo: Your reign of terror is over Stockman
Things like that, Is VERY cool. If ya know what I mean :-?

Old show humor, I always love watching Shredder and Krang insulting each other.
Krang: "Hmm, for once you might actually carry out a task successfully."
Shredder: "Why thank you Krang."
Krang: "Yeah, and I might begin to like Brocoli!"
-Peking Turtle
Shredder: "Can't you idiots do anything right?!"
Bebop: "Well I thought we screamed pretty good."
-Adventures in Turtle-Sitting
Shredder: "It will be worth it trust me!"
Krang: "Trust me.... I've heard that before!"
-Big Rip Off
Krang: "My beautiful body... ruined! And it's all your fault Shredder! You'd just better hope the damage is covered by the warrenty!"
-Krangenstein lives!
Krang: "Well Shredder, planning on getting your own series?"
Shredder: "Oh Krang, I was just killing some time..."
Krang: "While you should've been killing those pesky turtles!"
-A Real Snow Job
Krang: "Shredder *cough* *cough* you idiot! I could've been blown to bits!"
Shredder: "So sue me!"
April's Fool
Krang: "Another failure Shredder? You have an almost perfect record."
Shredder: "If that stupid dosilater of yours had worked..."
Krang: I'm tired of your miserable excuses!"

I just think the new show is great. I lkes it better.
They both have very different types of humor. The old series went for slapstick and such, and they did it well. And I still find a lot of the bits funny.
The new show has a more subtle "real" humor. Like the kind of stuff that gets flung around my house. I personally like this type of humor better. With the show's more serious tone, you get an unexpected laugh, and it's a nice relief.

It's true - the witty repartees Krang and Shredder often traded were quite amusing. Sometimes slapstic humour in the original show was funny too - particularly in the episode "Super Bebop and Mighty Rocksteady". The bit with dancing Shredder was good as well as the scenes with the "animalized" news crew.

I agree with Kali. The old cartoon and the new cartoon have their own brand of humor. I like this element because both make me laugh.
The old series relied a lot on word-play and puns. Not that I minded this at all; I never met a pun I didn't like. And because it was aimed at a younger audience, you know there are going to be jokes galore, along with good-natured humor. This is one of the things that, at 22 years of age, still appeals to me about the old show.
The new series can also be funny. Take this morning's episode for example ("The Shredder Strikes: Part 2"). Michaelangelo's been hurt in a fight with the Foot Clan, and Raphael's asking if he's okay. Michaelangelo goes on to totally fake out Raphael with just how hurt he is, and it's genuinely funny.
Even though I prefer the humor of the old cartoon, the new cartoon has more than enough playful wit to amuse me.
Bebop: "I wish I could visit my mommy."
Rocksteady: "Why don'tcha?"
Bebop: "I tried. But every time she sees me, she runs away screamin'."

The old Was kinda made to be funny and stuff, The new show is also funny but in a more complicated kinda funny way.
Like this quote from General Blanque (The federation):
''Well maybe if you tricraton baboons hadn't manage to blow up your own homeworld, you wouldn't be living on a bunch of flaoting rock fragments''
[Turtles in space Part 5]
I don't think a kid would think about this as ''Funny''
But it sure Cracked me up. hehe
And Mikey says/does some funny SH** Too. Like this:
Turtles: ZzZzZzZzZzZ
Mike: Whoa
Raph: What, What is it
Mike: hahaha, ohh man.. I slept on my hand, and it got numb and hit my face, and i thought somebody slapped me... Don't you hate that :D
Now, that's funny hehe.
The new show is just Cool in its own way and so is the old show....

I happened to find both shows incredibly funny (I'm an easy laugher). But to be honest, as old as the old series was, I haven't seen anything that old make me laugh so hard (besides Three Is Company, Cosby Show, and Full House). For an old series, it's humor could still make you laugh.
The new series is great with humor as well, but sometimes, they attempt humor a little too much through Mikey. But one scene that will always have me on the floor is this:
Mikey: *swings hip in a stupid dance* T-M-N-T! What you get is what you see!
Raph: You know, you're only embarrassing yourself
~ Garbageman
But seriously, the old series had many characters in on humor when it came to situational puns and whatnot. I find the old series' humor funnier.

That actually happened to me one time, my hand fell on my face, totally numb. But that quote is funny
The old show was trying to be funny at almost every moment, the new show takes the serious sides well, and injects humor.
I think the episode Bepop and Rocksteady Conquer the World was one of the funniest. They zap Shredder and Krang with the anxiety ray, and thru the episode they're finding a way to get back to normal; when they do, they're too scared to move.
Krang: You go first
Shredder: *think for a second* No you g-

Last night I was watching some old cartoon episodes of the original TMNT series and the episode "Peking Turtle" had to be one of the funniest they ever did!

I like both shows, but it depends on your sense of humor and all. Alot of people have said this already. It depends on your brand of humor, and what you think is funny.
My opinion: The old cartoon was funny. It still is. And I'll always love it. But I think the new cartoon, with it's more adult humor, is funnier, to me at least. :)

OK, for me it goes like this. Everytime I watch the new show, all I see in ways of comedy comes out of Mikey's mouth. It's almost like he's there for comic relief.
Now in the old show, you had everyone (and I mean EVERYONE,) saying something funny. Like this line from Sky Turtles.
It goes something like -
Irma: Finally I've found someone that can sweep me off my feet
They begin floating
April: I guess he has that effect on everyone.
Irma then says she thought she'd be the only one or something like that and throws his picture, breaking it.
The new show focus's on mainly the Turtles for humor (I still lov e the new show, but I like the old shows humor much better.)
Here's one of my favorite lines from the Turtles animated movie that kicked off the series moving to CBS back in the day. That episode is called, Planet of the Turtloids.
Vernon: But I'm telling you it was one of you guys.
Michaelangelo: Sorry dude. This is the only size we come in.
April: What Vernon's trying to say is it was dressed like one of you guys.
Leonardo: I don't like this one bit
Rapael: Yeah. Imagine someone going around trying to rip off our style.
Donatello: We better check this out. It might be copyright infringement
What donny said there always makes me laugh. It's like they were really a part of life and such. I don't know, I guess it was just it was never hard to be funny in that show, and it wasn't overdone either. In this new show, all everyone does is poke fun at Mikey, or he comes up with the jokes.
I'll make a bet. In Secret Origins Pt. 2, how much ya wanna bet that most comic relief comes from Mikey. Don't get me wrong the new show has made me laugh and some of it was good, but sometimes they fall flat from trying to hard. I wish they took the old shows type of humor and put it with the new shows action and storytelling. Now that would make it totally perfect. But hey, if the new show pops up on DVD, then I can always go back to the old humor I love while watching the collest action scenes and stories from the new series.
That's my take on it. Plus, anytime you guys have quoted the old shows on this topic, It got me laughing, hard. When you quoted the new show, I didn't laugh as much, but I think the Casey scene in the TCRI building is funny. Now that was funny.

One more line. This one I took from your sig Raphael90.
The Turtles and April run up the stairs trying to escape the flood...
APRIL: "I don't think I can take much more of this!"
RAPHAEL: "Hey, look on the bright side...at least its not raining..."
- from 'Turtle Tracks'
Now see, they got a freaking tidal wave chasing them and he talks about it not raining  ... Too funny.
The old shows humor just seemed to fall in place without having to try alot. The new show tries to hard sometimes.

IMO, it depends on the show. In the old show, it had like, slapstick type humor. Krang, Shredder, Bebop, and Rocksteady were always funny. Michaelangelo in the old toon was great too, and who didn't love Raph's wisecracks?! :tlol: :tanime: . I decided to watch a tape w/ old Ninja Turtle episodes on it and it is pretty funny. One of my favorite jokes they did on that show was how they'd make reference to the fact that they were a TV show. Such as, in the episode where Chrome Dome, Antrax, Leatherhead, Slash, Tempestra, Scumbug, and the Rat King came and Shredder locked Bebop and Rocksteady in a room, Rocksteady says "We might be in here for the rest of our lives" and then Bebop says "Or at least the rest of the episode" :tlol:

personally, I'm mixed! I mean, there were more jokes in the first series, but the jokes in the new series seem better placed.
With G1 turtles, the jokes were hit or miss. Krang's snide remarks were great, but there were a bunch of jokes I have issue with, like the exchange of Mike and Raph in Pizza by the Shred...
Mike: I thought I could make extra dough delivering Pizzas.
Raph: Extra dough? You mean Pizza dough!!!!
That line ruined the entire set up!!!! The dough pun was clearly established in Mike's line... Raph's line killed it.
Then the famous Krang line from Return of the Fly:
"I like my seafood without flies!"
Who does?
Not to mention the over use of Leatherhead's annoying Gumbo jokes.
There were great jokes all over, but a lot of crappy ones as well.
Now the new series has less jokes, but they are stratigically placed. My favorite one was from the Search for Splinter part 2...
Utrom 1: Careful!!! Do not fire! You may destroy the instruments!!!
(Another Utrom shoots and hits a control panel)
Utrom 1: What did I just say?
Pretty much I cannot say which is funnier, since they all have their own unique humor in them...
I still think both shows are funny. My only quibble is that all the jokes are mainly from Mikey's mouth, which sooner or later, will ruin it for me. I never been a fan of the shows (friends, frasier, and the like,) that has them whole bits of dialouges, only to be finished with a one liner from the tried and old comic relief. In the old show, they all provided humor, wether it was Bebop and Rocksteady, to Krang and Shredder, to the whole Channel 6 crew (Vernon, Burne, April and Irma mainly.)
OH and hey!? Who can't forget the mobsters who always knew ways of making people talk *pulls out a feather* I so can't wait to watch episodes with those mobsters again
Now in this new show, and as I stated in an earlier post, watch how Mikey provides the laughs while most of the others act serious. I am a screenwriter and have had my feet in the business for awhile. One rule about movies and TV is... If you can predict it (basically being cliched,) then they say it shoulda never been made. What I am saying in that respect is, I can basically predict where all the puns are gonna come from. Now I admit some episodes have caught me off gaurd (like the Utrom telling the other Oot not to fire, that was funny,) but mainly all I've seen is Mikey get slapped from Raph, Don make fun of Mikey, or Mikey providing his one liners to make us laugh. I just hope they don't play it out.
All the studios who have read my scripts have either said I got true talent, that I don't write cliched flicks, but they weren't looking for that type of genre at the moment. Or they have totally bought one of my scripts and said that they would like to strike an option deal with me. My whole point about this is, you can never use something more than a couple of times, or it will tired and then peeps will get tired of it and eventually move on.
I love both shows, and the new one does catch me off guard sometimes, but I think the old one has it beat in my books (just for now.) Of course being a Turtle fan, I am always keeping my eye's and ears open, watching the kick-butt action, while waiting for some genuine laughs (like the Utrom bit stated above.)
Hope this wasn't too long, but I love to right when the chance comes up :D

I also like the 'we're on tv' style jokes. One of my faves, cause it caught me so off guard was in a ep where the TMNT were looking for the technodrome. They didn't know they were directly on top of it.
one of the tmnt- how do we know when we found the technodrome?
don- listen to the sound of humming.
*the technodrome theme starts playing, theme that always plays whenever the technodrome is on screen*
don- this is the place.
I also like when the bad guys kidnapped April and Shredder had Rocksteady tell em where they were.
tmnt- where are you located?
Rocksteady- uhh.. um... d'oh.. where was it again?
Shredder- *gives out the address*
Rocksteady- OOH! yeah, right boss. We're at-
Don- I know I know, you're at *says the same address shredder just said*
Rocksteady- how'd he know? Gee, maybe he's seen this episode before...

I agree that most of the jokes are from Mikey's mouth, but not all the humor is. You except funny from Mike, but if it comes from say, Raph and Leo, or even Splinter, it's even funnier. I laugh out loud at some of Raph's one-liners, and Leo can be downright hilarious when he wants to. Some of the best parts are when they're not trying to be funny.

That's one of the great things about the old series... those "Bullwinkle-esque" self awareness jokes. April saying stuff like, "It's your show."
As I said before, the jokes in the new series are more stratigically placed, while the old show had hundreds of them, but some were just bad and nonsequitor (Krang's line about not likeing seafood with flies).
But I have to say, Casey Jones trying to return a toaster to TCRI:
CJ: Hey! I gotta see the head geek in charge here!
Guard: Sir... we do not manufacture toasters.
CJ: You sure do! Look.
Guard: That says RICT... IN CRAYON sir!
Following of course with Casey trashing the joint, is funnier than anything I've ever seen in any show whatsoever....

The old cartoon was hilarious, plain and simple. And it wasn't just a few characters who provided the laughs; ALL the characters had their moments to bask in the sun. Who can forget Shredder and Krang bickering at each other like a married couple? Or Vernon making a total fool of himself for the umpteenth time? Heck, even guest characters who only made cameo appearances -- such as Mr. Ogg, for example -- had no problems eliciting chuckles from the audience.
The old cartoon relied a lot on witty banter and puns. As a writer myself, I find it a little insulting that the series' great writing is lost on a lot of fans. Most only care about action and fights, with humor thrown in. Whatever. I'll argue until I'm blue in the face that the writing for the old cartoon was sharp.
I will agree, to some extent, with the sentiments expressed by previous posters in this thread that the new cartoon seems to rely on Michaelangelo as its sole source for humor. The other characters chip in every now and then, but the show's essentially a one-trick pony when it comes to humor, most of which is supplied by Michaelangelo.
Not that there haven't been some genuine comedy moments in the new cartoon. The Utrom scene quoted in this thread a few times is one such example. I rolled right off my couch when that Utrom said, deadpan, "What did I just say?"
In the end, this debate is deadlocked. Some people like the old cartoon's humor, while others appreciate the new cartoon's comedy. Neither side is going to one-up the other when it comes to providing examples to argue their case.
But it's been a great discussion so far! It's definitely been the best one to come down the shoot in a while.
"What a cornball. Who writes that guy's dialogue?" - Donatello, from "Turtles, Turtles Everywhere"
Yeah this has been a good discussion. For once it's nice to see a good - clean - debate. No fighting. Like I said, I love both series (the new shows story is getting better with each episode.) I'd like to say that every turtle fan can benefit from having both series in their lives. If you want some straight up episodes without continuity, pop in the old show. If you want to watch a show with a more mainstream story, pop in the new show...
I know I will be getting every turtle DVD released (except for next mutation.) I never watched next mutation, but saw a snipit from it, and it looked like an episode of power rangers to me.
Anyhow. Good topic everyone. Keep it going with some thoughts.
