View Full Version : Dreamwave in trouble?

Welp, normally this wouldn't be much of a big deal, but with all this talk of Dreamwave having to cancel numerous titles, I thought I might check and see what everyone else may think. I haven't been able to access Dreamwave's website for the past few days. I was wondering if it was just me, or perhaps Dreamwave really is havin' some financial issues? As I said, this normally wouldn't be a big deal, sites go down all the time, but this sorta reminds me of the ReSaurus toys website right before the company itself went under. So, anyone have any comments or opinions?

I seriously doubt that Dreamwave is in the trouble of which you speak. Their plans seem to be rolling full steam ahead, and this month is Transformers Month.
Which titles, besides TMNT, are being canned? I've heard of a few that had been switched to one-shots from monthlies or whatever, but that's all, and that was a while ago.
I could have sworn that I was on the DW site a day or 2 ago. Doesn't seem to be working now, though.
Dreamwave is in trouble in the sense that the entire comic book industry is in trouble, but you already knew that.

You've stated that in numerous threads now. I think everyone gets your point!

Megaman is not canceled. I repeat, Megaman is not canceled. There's going to be a new artist, someone who once worked on Sonic the Hedgehog.
Necrowar is the only title I've heard being cancelled after issue 3, based on the sales of issue one.
I can't even think of 5 Dreamwave titles that could be cancelled. What are they?
If they are cancelling books, is so that they DON'T get into trouble. If they continued to publish books that didn't sell enough, THEN they'd be in trouble.
I doubt that the company will be vanishing overnight.

Michelangelo, all that thread shows is a bunch of fans bitching, much like over here. Not official DW news.
They canned TMNT rather suddenly, and they cancelled Necrowar (this one really did sell poorly), but other than those two, nothing else has been cancelled in the last few months. They dropped some of their own series back when they first picked up the TF franchise a couple of years ago, mainly because they just don't have the people or time to do those and the TF material all at once. TF's are their bread and butter right now, so extraneous books that don't sell well will get cut.
BTW, their site does have a tendency to go down on occasion, and it's frills-heavy, which can make for intense maintenance. But what site doesn't eat itself from time to time.

I think all of you will be surprised when the DW TMNT come back this summer. Hopefully LeSean will still be the penciler, but thats wishful thinking. I do beleve though that they will be back. I dont think the show and toys have reached their peak yet, and that they will continue for a least a year or two. With them going strong there willl always be a market for the comic. Thoughts?

Yeah I think/Hope that DW's TMNT will return for good. I don't know how much Megaman Sells and what necrowar sold. But the numbers which i saw for the TMNT comic was rather. Well depends on how many copies they are usually selling for their other titles

Actually, I think the show and toys will be around for a lot longer than a year. How much longer? Hard to say, but the Toys have been incredibly succesful and season 3 is confirmed. It took us a year to get through season 1, so you do the math.
As far as cartoons and toys creating the market for a comic, sorry, but not really. Unfortunately, unless they are able to market the comics outside of speciality (i.e. comic book) shops, putting trades in Toys R Us for example, it almost makes no difference whether there is a cartoon or not. Comics are being (or have been) marginalized, and the market for them is shrinking by the second. Not only is the medium's audience small, but its a tight knit, traditional group that is reticent to change. Anything thats not wearing tights has a tough time surviving in the comic world; look at Dark Horses Star Wars comics. You couldn't ask for a better/more recognizable license than that, and they still trail behind Batman/X-Men/Spawn etec. in terms of sales. Thats just the way it is, no matter how much any of us wish things otherwise.

The fact that they are not alone in their troubles won't help them anymore than it will CrossGen, or it did Gorilla Comics. They probably won't go out overnight, but can you honestly say that having one profitable title (or small line) is the most stable circumstance for a publisher to find itself in? TMNT being cancelled or no, I don't want to see any new publisher go out of business.. but like you said, it's a troubled industry. Only time will tell.

Thats a good point. It would be a good idea to sell the comics say right next to the action figures, but that won't happen. Anyways thanks for the comment.

Well, you know, Dreamwave needs to do more to get their wares into the hands of more people. They've been trying, there is no doubt about it, and they've expressed interest on doing more, but there is still more work to be done. Still, there's only so much that can be done on their end, because it's all about the retailers, and most regular retail stores don't bother with comics.

I see where you're coming from, but that said, it's not like Dreamwave is doing THAT badly. What I was trying to say was that even though the industry is troubled, Dreamwave is doing ok. They've got a lot a head of them. The way people are talking is as if it's like the end is near and the whole company is sinking, and that is far from accurate.
Here's an idea: Blisterpack the Trade Paperback and hang them on the pegs with the action figures in the stores. Or, blister pack several single issues together for one price. Get them into the stores that way. Then they are right there in where the audience will see them, and stores will actually be able to make some money on a substantial sale.

-->> 1 point people keep playing off..is the fact that Mirage could take the book to Devil's Due ..or another company.. again.. 'Masters of U.' is on it's third volume.. as well as G.I. Joe.. ..why do they think Dreamwave is the only Comic Book people that TMNT could be published under?? .. even TRANSFORMERS.. while the main TF books are at D.W. there are a few other publishers that make TF books.. i get Previews all the time.. ..there's tons of publishers.
.. but then again..DW and Mirage may have some contract thing.. but well .. thought i'd throw that back out there.. :goofygri:

I wouldn't mind, so long as PAD and LeS went along for the ride.
