Just read this at www.offthecard.com
OTC reader jc sends along word of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle rumor that fans of the comics will be thrilled to hear. Jc reports that Playmates is set to announce sometime between now and Toy Fair 2004 the release of Turtles based on the Mirage comic series. He mentions:
'These would be a little more "blocky" (but not Kubrick blocky...just more geometric), and the Turtles themselves would feature their red bandanas, instead of the rainbow assortment from the cartoons.'
Keep in mind that this is a rumor until officially announced! Ninja Turtle fans - keep your fingers crossed.
Normally, I'd just write this off as yet another internet rumor... except I've read a few hints and rumors about this in the www.action-figure.com forums for awhile now, to the point where it seems pretty likely. Specifically, these threads:
http://www.action-figure.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=4677
http://www.action-figure.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=3976&high light=comic+tmnt
For now, I think this still sounds like a rumor, but then again you never know...

I would snatch those up in a heart beat! Probably two of each: one to keep carded, and one to open (which I rarely do)!
So, which would it be? Would they be done in Green, Red and brown, or all in shades of Black and White, to seem more like the comic? Either way, this is too much to hope for. Come on Playmates, surprise us! :)

I would shed a gentle tear. We would have 4 of the real TMNT, in their truest form. It gets no better than that.

I have actually been wishing they would do this for a long time. Come on Playmates!
and they would probably just be green since the bandanas are red.

I still have major doubts that it will really happen. Atleast at retail, since the all red masks would confuse kids. If anything, it would be a retailer or mirage/offical site exclusive. :)

Either way this would be a great thing especially for us long time tmnt fans. I still won't get my hopes up though.

I dunno... it COULD confuse kids, but we have a large market for adult and nostaglic collectibles (I.e. Muppet Show, Cereal Mascots, Pg-13- R movies, stuff like that).
I'd say these would fare well in Comic Book Stores and places with a large assortment of adlut/nostalgic collectibles. They may not make it in Target or WalMart.....

I really wonder if it's worth putting out another variant of the turtles.
It's not all that hard to paint their masks red ya know...

We're always going to have to deal with resculpts of the main characters, no matter what toy line you're looking at. At least stuff like this, and variations from the show, make the line less annoying.
Sounds to me like these will be brand new sculpts, too. Notice the report mentioned they would be more geometrically shaped?

Although I am not a fan of the comics, these figs could be cool.

It would be cool if playmates did these because that would mean they are listening to what the fans want.

Playmates definitely listens to what the fans want. Their other most successful line in recent years is The Simpsons, and for the last year or two Playmates has been releasing figures almost directly corresponding to the results of fan polls. At one point, they were even accepting 10 questions each month from the major collecting message board, that they would then answer.
Plus, they did inquire as to what people would like to see in a Baxter Stockman figure late last year in the www.action-figure.com forums, and I'm almost certain one of those earlier threads I posted was Playmates way of judging the demand for comic accurate TMNT.

i dont think their mask will be all red...look
"I think for the sake of SOME kids picking them up, we'd have to do the bandanas in different colors. It's a small price to pay for the rest."
that came from the main one on that forum. nomad or somethin.

01-27-2004, 02:38 PM
Thats not a small price, that is a very important detail. The comics didn't have colored bandanas, so they can't just change it. What else would make them different from regular figures?

I'm sure if they go through all the trouble of making comic accurate turtles, they'd make the masks red. My guess is that a set like this wouldn't go to mainstream retailers like Wal-Mart or Target, or if it did it'd include a reprint of one of the comics(like the Marvel Legends figures do), so any kids who buy the set will know where they came from.

That would be awesome if they included one of the individual turtles' mini-series comics. Like Raph would have the Raphael comic, and so on. But it's very unlike Playmates to do something like that. It's an excellent idea though.

You know what really would be cool? If they made the figures black and white like in the comics.... don't see how it would work market wise... but It would be cool...

Black and white toys. if they made them that way how would you tell them apart from one another.

hey yeah it would be cool....mmm.........i don't like the idea :D ...maybe for a key chain or something, but for not for an action figure

I don't think it's wise to make comic book specific Turtles with colored head bands. I just don't see how it's feasible, other than the view of little kids whom never read the books in question.
I would like to see comic specific versions of Casey Jones, some of the Mutaheads from "Sky Highway," More Triceritons, Gizmo, and Savatti Romero (Please forgive me... this is the first time I attempted to write his name....) Maybe the Leach monster from "Up the River"
Of course, what would really be cool is if they had different TMNTs based on styles. Like Zuli's freakish monsterous Turtles, or Hedden McWeeney's goofy looking Turtles...

that's a really neat idea Dr. tooth and I never even thought of it...
but anyways they could tell them apart by sculpting differnt faces like they do now....and it would say there name on the box and give the box a differnt turtle face like the current ones had there are allot of differnt ways to tell the tmnt apart like just looking at the weapons they come with ..

What happens when kids lose the weapons though? I think it'd be kinda hard for the new generation of younger fans to remember which turtle has which face.
Maybe they should bring back the lettered belts... .
But yeah... Black and white turtles woulden't work. And I bed if Mirage had start off with a lot of money, the first issue would have been in color.
The big thing with these figures would be marketing... I like the free comic idea. Maybe make this a 4 set, like the target pack with the old line, and include a copy of TMNT #1?. Then slap a limited edition symbol on the figure box, figures, and the comic, and you have one hell of a collectors item ;).

I asked Dan Berger about this last year, and he said he seriously doubted Playmates would do a comic line because they wanted to focus on the new show and game.
But then again... (crosses fingers for a Shadow figure)

That is an excellent idea. I'd even like a further breakdown- IE: Eastman, Laird, Lawson, Dooney, Berger, Farley, Lavigne, Talbot, etc.. (basically everyone who worked on a TMNT book.. ) I know that'd make for alot of figures, but maybe each artist could design for one TMNT wrather than each doing all four.. but, eh, at any rate it'd own. I really doubt it'd happen, but.. just the Eastman/Laird 4 would be great IMO.. and as many people have stated (although some people still haven't got it) it doesn't have to be sold to the usual market. They could sell it through the official site or, whatever = red head bands

Black and white would be like the inside of the comic but that's a silly idea
The comic covers are in colour so I'd do them like that

if I've learned anything from a little creature called lilly nothing is silly and everything is possable. and anyways if they did do this line I'm sure it would only be sold threw comic shops and mail aways because it would classh to much with the existing line pluss they make the original comic book statues for comic shops only.
