I posted this here as it has to do with two subjects, and not one individual one...
In the Archie comics, the manta ray mutant was called "Man Ray", while the toy version of this mutant manta ray was named "Ray Fillet". Any idea on just why the change in name, and also why the chest designs were different on each?
Thanks.

My guess is the illustrators took some liberties in their project and changed him for their own reasons, or forgot what he looked like originally and were too lazy to look it up.

His human name was Ray Fillet. Once he was mutated, he took on the name Man Ray. :D

I never considered that... of course, that was never mentioned in the comic, but it would be a plausible story.

-->> In the old TOON.. the ep. 'Rebel Without a Fin' ..there was a green fish man named Ray..then April got turned into a green fish woman.. and.. i'm assuming 'Ray' was supposed to be 'Man Ray'..the Ray fillet.. but it was never clear.. but 'Ray' was kinda a bad guy.. and he never came back..even tho' he swore like th' dickens that he'd be back.. but Merdude,dudes..was there.. he came back.. but he never really left cuz he only showed his face on the cartoon but he had 2 eyes ..which wasn't right cuz one got poked out..so i don't know about you.. but suddenly.. i'm hungry..@!@@! :x

I've got that episode on a tape that I picked up at a garage sale last year... yeah... "Hollywood Dudes: Rebel without a fin" with a Fonzie-d up Michelangelo on the cover.
Yeah, that episode sucked, I was dissappointed to see that this "Ray" wasn't the fishy "Ray" I was looking for.

Yeah I was about to say, I always got Ray Fillet in the Archies mixed up with Ray in that 'Rebel without a Fin' ep. But the Ray in the comics was a good guy, whereas the one in the ep was not.

Yeah, when they started making stories about such characters that were made as action figures first, the rule of thumb was that Archie had the better story lines. Leatherhead/ Wingnut/ screwloose/Ray! It didn't matter. That's why they could never go wrong with "Shredder and Krang" episodes!

yeah but Man Ray was supposed to be a good guy all along. Geez, the cartoon did the same thing to him that they did with Wingnut... That's why I didn't like some of the old CBS eps.. they didn't portray the characters right. Old faves like Leatherhead and Rat King were dead on what you'd expect based on their figures.

geez, I better catch up on that toon... Obviously Hothead was there (can someone tell me which ep?) and now wingnut too, wich episode did he appear in then?

I forgot the ep title but it was a CBS ep. Zack (that tmnt fanboy) was lying about aliens and other things left and right for some reason. His folks sent him to a camp to behave. In the camp the 2 conselours were actually Wingnut and Screwloose in disguise and they were brainwashing the kids for some reason or another, and also had an army of robot insects. Bad thing is, Zack already had a rep of making stuff up that noone, even the tmnt believed him, until Don and Mike finally decided to go and see if it was true.
According to the toy (and comics) Wingnut and Screwloose were good guys.. just real nutty ones. Not villians.

Okay, just looking through my comics, and found another anomoly in this Man Ray vs. Ray Fillet thing.
Merdude #3... more commonly known by it's cover title, "Merdude and Ray Fillet"... in which the character is referred to as "Ray", "Ray Fillet" or "Fillet" throughout the issue, which is different than other instances prior.
I'm going to look through the final issues of Mutanimals and the Terracide series to see what he's referred to as during those to see if there was a change at some point in his name.
Also... I'm going to pull out the sourcebook and see if that has any clues as to what the deal is.

For some reason, it was a rule for them not to have "continuing" stories.. and it seemed like "extra" characters only appeared once or twice through the entire run...I always wondered why Mondo Gecko moved next door to the Turtles, yet only appeared in one episode after his debut...talk about anti-social....
Hothead was never in the cartoon...he was in the Archie comics, but he was known as "The Warrior Dragon". I think the name Hothead was just for the toys?
There was an issue of TMNT Adventures..it was Man Ray's second appearance. I think it was around issue #17...when he introduces himself he says something like "I am Man Ray, although some of my friends have come to call me Ray Fillet". I think this was the first time he actually met the Turtles, because in #5 he got mutated and stuff, but kind of kept in the shadows...(except to Shredder)...

Just found the issue and the quote is "My name is Man Ray... although some know me as Ray Fillet", TMNTA #13.
So... that answers it... he answers to both names.
End of Discussion, I suppose. Thanks all.
