View Full Version : Classic Episode Discussion: Enter the Fly

HA! And you thought this kind of discussion was over!

Hark! For I have returned to the blessed forums, more educated than ever to bring you the return of the CLASSIC EPISODE DISCUSSIONS!!!!!!

*fitting orchestra music begins*

Now, with that aside, I believe the discussions stopped with DK's Case of the Killer Pizzas thread. So, naturally, that should make the next one in line be Enter the Fly.

I'm afraid I have some bad news, though: ever since I got my new computer, I haven't used my older SB card that I used to cap the sound clips you all know and love, so I've finally broken the tradition of including a sound clip whenever I start a thread such as this one.

In any case, what do you think of this one? The beginning of Baxter Stockman, the FLY. What direction do you think the series took with this twist in the story of the turtles? (I already know the answer from a vast majority of members here, but what the hey?)

I was really surprised cause I never expected them to change Baxter that way. The surprising was, Krang was actually gonna KILL Baxter, so he saved himself by turning into that fly. The ep was cool, it had Baxter as a fly, the posionous Doku plant that almost killed April and the Knucklehead.

It was a good episode, I was surprised too at Krang's cruetly here that he was going to just kill Baxter. Another interesting point to notice, is that in the beginning Baxter and Shredder are atop the World Trade Centre. I bet they'd never show this episode today on tv, same with The big blowout. I can just see the hordes of whiny people now.....

I still get goosebumps when I watch the scene where Krang goes to kill Baxter. It's just incredibly dark for the series, something you never saw during Seasons 3-6. This could be one of the reasons for the change in tone.

I'll never forget all the weird lights in that "killing room" and how you could see Baxter's skeleton as Krang's ray attempted to kill him. Yeesh! That's about as graphic as it got for the old cartoon series.

Other than that, however, "Enter: The Fly" was a great episode. The only thing that annoyed me about it was the fact that the plant used to save April looks exactly like the plant Shredder used to try and kill her.

That's a case of just being lazy on the animators' part. Oh, well. It wasn't the first time such a mistake was committed, and it wouldn't be the last.

I have always remembered this ep since I saw it back in 1988. To this day most the of people who I know, I am in college, remember the ep of when Baxter was turned into the fly. 6 years ago when I was at summer camp the kids there remembered that ep and said it was an old episode. My brother, 5 years older than me, still remembers that ep. I watched the ep last summer, on my tape of it. This was ONE of my favorite eps. I don't know about them not showing it now since 9/11 was 2.5 years ago.

I agree with everybody that that showed KRang's truley evil side of trying to murder baxter. Remember when the rock soilders dragged baxter and baxter screamed I can be of help to you I'm a scientist and KRang says so am I and I don't need the assistance of a measley earth creature, into the disinegrator unit with him. Krang killed baxter since he was of no use. I don't understand why Shredder wanted to get rid fo baxter and wanted bebop and rocksteady back since they have screwed up his plans many many many many many many times, but bebop and rocksteady have strength and are willing to bash the turtles. The last straw was when baxter put the wrong battery in the divise for the twin towers thing, which was a simple mistake. But it was nice of krang to change his mind of not sending shredder help and automatically sending him bebop and rocksteady when shredder requested them. Maybe Krang did it to speed up their quest for world domination. From what I have seen on TV episode guids, since I stopped watching the show in 1992 or 1993, This was Baxter's last appearance as a human. How did Baxter fall for the trick of the turtles being responsible for his condition? This was a dark episode with april's near death and Krang trying to kill baxter since he was of no use to him. I wonder what viewers thought when they showed the technodrome a few minutes after shredder threw baxter in the portal.

I thought this was an awesome episode, especially since its on the same tape after "case of the killer pizzas"(I didn't like that episode) It was wierd watching it again seeing how baxter was a terrorist and he was going to destroy the WTC. I wonder if they will release this episode to dvd because of that. :-?

Other than that, however, "Enter: The Fly" was a great episode. The only thing that annoyed me about it was the fact that the plant used to save April looks exactly like the plant Shredder used to try and kill her.

Ya know, I've always been bothered by that too! It look exactly the same! They could have colored the Doku plant blue or something. Also, since I like Poison Ivy from Batman so much, I always thought of a storyline there involving her in that ep, since she's the poisoning-ppl-with-deadly-plants lady.

Shredder prolly didn't trust Baxter as much as dumb ol' B&R which is why he was willing to destroy Baxter, even though both Baxter and B&R made mistakes. Remember Baxter was smart. And like on the new TMNT series, Baxter had an ego and turned against Shredder in one of the 'Sarnoth' eps. Well I guess that's the character of Baxter period, that's how he was in the comics too. He's certainly no shy, and modest genious like how Don is. So b/c Baxter turned on him once, that's prolly why he turned on Baxter in the end and try to have Krang kill him. Now I know there was also one ep where B&R turned against Shredder, 'Bebop and Rocksteady rule the Universe', where they took that raygun that made ppl scared and used it on the Turtles, Shredder, Krang, and many others, to attempt to rule the world without Shredder and Krang. ALso B&R have talked back several times to Shredder, like in the ep 'Bye, Bye Fly', where Shredder was turned into a little fly and B&R at first refused to change him back, since Shredder treated them like dirt all the time and wanted alittle respect. But still, B&R are inferior in brains. The only reason they turned against Shredder and Krang in that one ep is cuz they had the raygun that made ppl afraid. And in the other ep, is cuz they were bigger than Shredder. But Baxter is purely smarter. So perhaps that's why he was willing to just kill Baxter, I dunno.

Overall, that's one of the best eps out there. Not just my opinion either, someone put it on their website for download one time cuz they thought it was soooo good. And no I don't have that URL, it was a long time ago. The artwork I thought was really good too. Very shaded, bright, and well-drawn. *thinks she may go watch it later now, lol*

This is an interesting episode. April almost dies, Baxter almost dies, and the knucklehead makes its first of only two or three appearances! It's loaded with classic lines like "here's ghuzi in your eye!"
It's been years since I've seen this, but I remember the world trade center reference and I too wonder if they would even release it nowadays. Maybe in a few more years...
Unfortunately, though, this is the last episode of human Baxter. And every subsequent Baxterfly episode, Baxter was promised he would be changed back into a human and it NEVER happened. I always hoped it was going to happen, but it never did. Introducing Barney Stockman (Baxter's twin brother?!?) was just a cruel joke. And also , what's with "Landlord of the Flies"? That totally goes out of Baxter fly episode continuity!
But anyway, back to the episode. When I saw this as a little kid, I never understood how making Baxter go "a micro-second forward in time" could "render him permanently out of phase with the rest of the world".

I know this is off-topic, but I never quite got this reasoning either. I'm a huge fan of the "Back to the Future" movies, and according to Doc's theory, anyone transported through time will just have to avoid their double.

So, using Doc's reasoning, if the Turtles were transported a micro-second forward in time, there'd be eight of them running around instead of four. Of course, this would create a time-warp paradox that could destroy the universe and the like. According to Doc's theory.

Then Shredder would really go nuts.

Good episode, I remember it back from my younger TMNT days. I finally got to see it again a couple years back and its still up on my list of favorite eps.

As for the whole Baxter thing, I was kind of sad to see him as a human go.
I guess you kinda get used to him and Shredder as a criminal duo, even though their relationship is shaky at best. On the other hand, with Baxter out of the way, Bebop and Rocksteady come back which I like because personally I like their antics.

Overall, this episode actually has a good solid story and its one that keeps you watching whereas other eps in the next few seasons kinda got lame.

I have to agree that human Baxter was much better then fly Baxter in every way. It's too bad he never stuck around for later seasons. But his intellect is probably why writers got rid of him. I think they wanted to dumb the show down and introduce R & B as permanent "co-stars" since they would always provide endless scenes of slapstic comedy, which they figured all kids find hilarous. I have a feeling if human Baxter was around as Shredder's sidekick even for one more season (or at least alternate with R&B), the show would definately have taken a more serious turn, because he had a lot more capacity to either help or hinder Shredder. But my guess is, the writers were capable of, but told to stay away from, complexity of plot and character. Personally though, I would have loved to see Baxter's and Krang's characters get developed more and possibly show some rivalry between them in the future, as scientists.

Meh, there was no real development left for Baxter, turning him into a mutant insect meant a great way to plug a new toy AND give him something new, but he ended up becoming a recurring villian rather than a regular one

Still, his sacrifice gave us Rocksteady and Bepop for several years so I'm not complaining.

Yeah. Hell, Baxter wasn't a bad guy originally. He was just some lowly inventor trying to sell his mousers to a local mousetrap shop. Shredder forced him to make millions of em not really knowing why, and he was sent to jail, not really knowing why. Hell, Shredder even sent foot soldiers to kill him, without him even knowing why. Gotta feel sorry for the guy at this point.

The new season starts with Baxter in the looney bin and Shredder busts him out and Baxter somehow becomes all evil and willing to do bad stuff and whatnot. Eventually he does tire of Shredder's treatment and does try to rule it all when he had the Eye of Sarnath. I have no idea why Shredder even kept him around after that. Well, the portal could send Bebop and Rocksteady back in exchange for someone else, so Shredder threw useless Baxter in there, and since Krang didn't see much use in some human, he tried to kill him. Instead Baxter became a fly with plots of revenge against not only the TMNT but Shredder too. One wonders how TMNT woulda been if Shredder had Baxter, Bebop and Rocksteady workin with him.

I do agree on the Landlord of the Flies ep, didn't fit in with the rest of the eps involving him and the computer. Although the idea of him being able to control flies was cool. One thing I didn't like about his first CBS ep 'Son of return of the Fly' was the fact that Baxter basically became a real bugbrain. All he could think about was sugar, he kept walking through walls as if he forgot to use doors... I mean... it's so sad seeing a once genuis reduced to that level of stupidity...

This was certainly a classic episode.
Baxter's demise, from a loser, to a loser who has his car stolen by a bunch of turtles, to being committably insane, to a giant hideous half-man half-fly was one of the best parts of the series. Its really funny if you think about it.

Yes, this would have been interesting. What little of the following seasons I've rewatched recently really are dumbed down...despite the fact that I love Bebop and Rocksteady, its true they went from vicious punks to little more than stooges. Despite the comic relief, they really weren't that conniving of enemies. Course they were never smart to begin with.

As for the Shredder pantless thing...I'll need to rewatch that, don't think I noticed that.

Oh shush! Why is everyone always getting on ppl's cases about spelling, who cares?! No it's ok, I'm not yelling or mad. But it was one of those things where you think something, but you say/write something different. Cuz I know there's always been confusion as to 'S' or 'Z' and I knew later on that it was spelled with a 'Z' but I guess yesterday when I wrote that message I forgot it was 'Z'. It never sounded like Zarnoth when I would hear them say it in the ep, it always sounded like Sarnoth.

Ok fine, just to let all you guys know who prolly misspell this ALL THE TIME (cuz alotta TMNT fans do), the guy who plays orig. toon Raph's voice, his name, Rob Paulsen, is spelled with an 'e', not Rob Paulson with an 'o'. :-P

And I agree the 'Son of Return of the Fly' *what the hell kinda name is that for an ep anyway?* was wayyyyyy off. It's like Baxter didn't even remember who he was or who he knew, or what April looked like, or that she was a girl. Instead he nabs Vernon, who he mistook for April, a woman?? Ohhhhkay!? He nabbed her in another ep, knew she was a friend of the TMNT, and knew her period! Now his computer had to remind him? Tho his brain as a fly did regress, but geez not that much you'd think! Alot of eps were like that actually, the characters didn't seem to have much continuality, or remember their past encounters with whoever or whatever. Very sad actually, cuz if they had not botched that up, it would have been a better show. I still love it of course for what it is, but it was things like that that always bothered me. And that's why at the time, when Batman: TAS was on in the early 90's, I watched and became a big fan of that alot more over TMNT. Cuz it surpassed it on those regards; more continuality, more emotional. Now I love them both.

Lisardo: It's not that...it's how it's actually pronounced, plust you mixed universes in the first place. "Sarnath" was a character in the Archie comics.
Besides, I'm pretty sure you'd be saying something one HELL of a lot different if somebody spelled "Leonardo" with an "e" instead of an "a" ;) The official site says "Zarnov", so I'm going to call it that way.

I guess no one cares if:

- Someone called the song "Jingle BALLS" instead of "Jingle BELLS"
- Someone spelled "weird" the wrong way (yes, there ARE exceptions to the I before E except after C rule...that's one of them)

Or anything else along those lines, eh?

Well with general spelling, I'm pretty good. Tho with TMNT things, I don't care if ppl misspell stuff. Cuz as I said, some ppl misspell Rob Paulsen all the time. There was a beef about that a while ago on the NTML list. And I misspell Michael Sinterniklaas alot, without copying and pasting his name (which I just did), and I'm like, "Who cares?" I don't mind being corrected and stuff, but it just seems lately ppl have been correcting ppl on spelling alot. Ohhhkay!

I didn't like when Baxter got turned into a fly either I thought he was a good character before the mutation.

But this was a good episode.

And this episode proved how ruthless Krang could be before they changed the cartoon from action to comedy.

Also I wonder what happened to those other mutant punks that were part of Bebop & Rocksteady's gang?

When I saw this as a little kid, I never understood how making Baxter go "a micro-second forward in time" could "render him permanently out of phase with the rest of the world".

Clearly, Baxter was utalizing a different form of time travel, one more like the kind they used in Stephen King's The Langoliers. If you recall Baxter's return episode in 1989, he was in a 4th-Dimensional plane (a micro-second forward in time) watching the TMNT sparring from inside their lair, and then he went through the Earth's crust until he reached the Technodrome.

I know this is off-topic, but I never quite got this reasoning either. I'm a huge fan of the "Back to the Future" movies, and according to Doc's theory, anyone transported through time will just have to avoid their double.

I remember seeing this eppisode while vacationing in Florida as a wee tot. (I also remember seeing the Mona Lisa epp at the beach) and It just so happens that I watched this epp last night;

A great epp IMO, lots of stuff going on; April Poisined- Turtles need to find the antidote, Shredder is fed up with Baxter, Baxter gets turned into a fly monster (A cartoon version of the Monster from the 1950s Sci Fi classic; "the Fly")

And BTW the first epp on the tape (Killer Pizzas) wasn't that good at all.

Captions aren't totally offcial; they're just inserted by the distribution company, not the studio that made the show. Besides, there are plenty of flaws in captioning anyway. American Pie, for example, shows "sh*itbreak" in the captioning when the b word should be "brick", not "break".

Call this a live commentary. I am making comments as I watch the episode.

-Two writers. That does not happen often or at all that I know of since David Wise cleared up the co-credit of his then fiancee.

-This only the second and I believe the final time the Twin Towers are involved in an episode. Do we ever learn what Shredder and Baxter are doing that involve the two towers? A force field between the towers is very vague. He mentions months of work too.

-Like the next episode there is a dimensional interference that serves as a plot point. Its just a coincidence that the two times it happens its consecutive episodes and not continuity. One thing that is not mentioned in the 'need of an exchange' was for two to crossover two would have to cross over to the other side. The fly from the garbage boat is the second being.

-I like how Shredder states he will strike at their weakest point April O'Neil. The cliche of her being repeatedly kidnapped or endangered should have been a point that April should have developed trying to avoid like in Archie's TMNT Adventures.

-A Doku plant and Gazi leaf. Are there any real-life counterparts to these counteracting toxic fumes? I like how the one green house the TMNT goes to happens to have the 'only Gazi leaf in the western hemisphere'. I know that line was added to up the stakes, but also can come across as a eye rolling plot convince.

-'We used to fight the Turtles together'. Yeah, like earlier today.:trazz:

-Leonardo made a pun on Donatello's short of change!:tlol:

-Knucklehead! Was this inserted to sell toys? I prefer the 2.0 version that is in Casey Jones debut episode. Not sure the function of it, tie up the turtles one by one? :ohwell:

-It's weird how Baxter has the stereotypical intelligence of a fly because he mutated. I thought that a person's intellect remained in tact if he/she mutated? This will be with Baxter for the remainder of his appearances unfortunately.

-Krang actually tries to murder Baxter. This is the second time that Baxter was attempted to be murdered because his use was at an end. This begins the physical abuse by Shredder(or Krang) that will reach into other incarnations. Also its interesting to note that Pat Fraley voices both Krang and Baxter Stockman, one of his characters attempts to kill the other.

-In the 1958 film The Fly, a matter transformer is supposed to transport the scientist from one place to another but his atoms are scrambled with a fly. Is that the only thing that Baxter The Fly has in common with the film the fact his atoms were scrambled with a fly's atoms? Its the most unique mutation in TMNT multimedia that I can think of because no mutagen was involved. I wonder if a shot of retromutagen would have done anything due to the unique circumstances of his mutation. In the 2012 cartoon Baxter did have contact with mutagen.

-Historic district, the Turtles don't want to maage any property. What historic district? I want more information instead of an excuse for whatever the plot calls for. I mean if the Twin towers are involved and mentioned why not state what historic area this is. Visuals don't tell us anything.

-Microsecond forward in time making a person hit out of phase after the energy affects their respective molecular structure? Sounds like something from The Flash's corner of the DCU.

-Shredder plays dirty but he does not bluff. That is a slippery line to walk in.

-I like this line, Splinter: 'It is remarkable what one can do when one is forced to'. Philosophical, in-character, and a lot of depth.

-Anchovies covered in Gazi leaves? Michelangelo will eat anything on a pizza. At least the other turtles have their limits.

This episode is goofy and dark all in one. It is unique in that and it is good for that reason.

Aside from a man's molecules melding with a fly's in a device meant for something else (Baxter's case disintegration and in both men in The Fly (teleportation) what else is influenced from either film. I have not seen either. All I know is of the accident itself and that it is a completely different character that Price and Goldblum play.

Like, things are dire for their human buddy and the Turtles acted sounded sad and concerned and determined to do whatever to save her. Plus, Shredder just came off as that much a threat to sink that low.

Plus, Shredder just came off as that much a threat to sink that low.

It reminds me of the crossovers. They keep forgetting that yeah, the Turtles goof off and trade one liners, but when **** gets serious, they get serious and react accordingly.

Enter: The Fly is a perfect blend of fun one liners and plot convinces that leave questions yet a threatening situation and serious villains. The episode is a good showcase of what the show is not the parody crossovers implicate it to be.

Agreed. I still feel that way about this ep which is why it’s one of my favourites. Shredder at his most evil. Unexpected and nothing else he did in the series came close imo.

I wanted to see Shredder build more of a resume on this show. Sure the character has one, he murdered Splinter in the Nicktoon and in IDW in a previous lifetime. All Shredder has here is he blew up the Channel Six News building, tried to kill Baxter twice, and defeated the TMNT a handful of times in fair hand to hand combat. This Shredder had a knack for science but it was rarely displayed and had more resources at his disposal than any incarnation. Probably the most enemies too ( Baxter, Rat King, Big Louie, Dregg) . Taking him out of limitations would he have pulled what his Archie Adventures counterpart did leading up to Forever War? I know shoulda/coulda/woulda/didn't...I am talking about what could Shredder (1987) have done on top of the little mentioned above to be considered a capable threat?

I dunno what else could’ve been done with Shredder tbh. To be fair, he was very cunning and somewhat a threat in seasons 1, 2, 7 and red sky.

Classic episode. Shredder had no problems putting up with his mutants but one too many failures by Baxter and...damn... :o

What I like is it is a good mix of threatening and goofy to represent the series as a whole.

What were Shredder and Baxter Stockman doing on the roof of the left one of the twin towers? They had spent weeks planning it and it involved a force field.

Season 2 was awesome, definitely. But the age old "I want my Foot Soldiers!!" in Season 2 and the repetitive "we need to repower/free the Technodrome!!" plots can get old fast. This was an awesome episode.

The plan was to create a force field between the two towers. Danged if I know why though because the device broke right away.

Are there any clues to what historic district Leonardo wants to avoid fighting in? I was wondering it the scenery gave it away since it was not mentioned specifically.
