I was playing the original TMNT game on my NES today when I got to thinking...
"Exactly what is this based on?"
My first idea was the original comic, since the art on the cartridge (and thus, the box also) was much like the comic art. Also, alot of the in-game art is very mirage-ish.
Then, I found the van.
Unless I'm mistaken the fruity little turtle van was only in the TMNT cartoon...
Also, when you complete the game, Splinter turns back into his human form, also a trend taken from the cartoon.
So...huh? Which is it?
Edit: Two more points
1) Many of the enemies in the game I've never seen before in the cartoon. So either they're comic-based or exclusive to the game.
2) Bebop & Rocksteady are in the game.
Edit 2:
The art on the cartridge and box has all the turtles with red bandannas on, while the art in-game has the turtles wearing their own colors. (This also stands with TMNT III, so this reason is rather iffy.

Perhaps they were making a comic-based game and about halfway through they decided to base it on the cartoon but were too lazy to go back and do all the art over again?

That sounds about right HMS.
It seems Konami took stuff from both Mirage and the cartoon and then threw in some original stuff to fill out the rest.

Why did Splinter return to being a human?

Why did Splinter return to being a human?
same reason the game was full of walking eyeballs, fire people, weird leg hopping thingies and all sorts of weird crap.

And giant frogs, don't forget them....and the giant mosquitos...
Seriously, what the hell where the designers at Konami smoking when they developed this game?

-->> The Box Art from the game was a favourite painting of the Mirage guys..
it's also the cover art on the reprint TMNT vol.1 # 4 ..
..Mike Dooney's painted work has always been real cool//
.. i don't think they even worried about the bandana colour issue when they chose the painting for the box art on the game..
..it's just a damm cool picture!!
..and Konami developers weren't smoking when they designed the game..
.. they just had a lot of compressed air on hand..

..huff n' puff!! :dead:  :P

Ultra Games is a pseudonym. They're the same company.

Ultra Games was simply an offshoot or division or whatever of Konami so that they could produce more games a year. (I believe there was a limit to how many you could release in a years time)
Edit: Yeah, I found it. Nintendo's rules in the late 80s-early 90s were that no developer were to release more than 5 games a year. So Konami started a another company, named it Ultra, and managed to sneak 10 games in per year. Acclaim did the same thing with the LJN company.

All games were screwed up back then.....geesh, remember that one Star Wars game where the first level was in the Sandcrawler with a bunch of Jawas then you go into the boiler room and fight Darth Vader? Then when you killed him he turned into a giant scorpian and you had to fight him again??

If you also noticed, on the box for "TMNT III: The Manhattan Project", the Turtles were fighting Triceratons, yet there wasn't a single reference to the Triceratons in any of the TMNT games.

That's another good point. Not to mention that also on that box they're in the mirage all-red masks.

Um, the turtles are NOT wearing red masks on the cover to TMNT III. Check it out:

I dunno about you guys, but I see a purple-wearing Donatello, orange-sporting Michelangelo, and blue-masked Leonardo.
So, then I thought, "Well, maybe they mean on the actual game box." So I looked for that, using Google's image search, but I couldn't find a full-box image. I seem to remember the box having the exact same art as the cartridge, though.
Unless you were all referring to the first NES game, in which case I just made myself look like a fool. Ah well.
