Hey,
Why did mikey use a grapling hook instead of nunchucks (spelling...not my strong suit)? Anyone have therories...or the real scope....i'd like to know

I've read the other posts about it and if I'm correct, it's all about censorship..
The grappling hook was pretty lame, it was not even a real weapon :/

Yeah, from what I understand, parents thought that the nunchuk were too violent, and they switched Mikey's weapon to the grappling hook. Which, if that is true, is beyond me, since I would think the katana or sais looked more violent... but then again, I (thankfully) don't share the same kind of thinking as the people who complained...

Short version: Parents through a hissy fit over the "violence levels" of the old toon, so the makers decided to replace Mikey's chucks with the grappling hook. It was a stupid thing to do, but, such is censorship.

they took the chucks away because numerous parents were complaining on how violent chucks are. Kids around the globe would act out as TMNT and parents did not want their kids to become too violent.

So wait, carrying around giant katanas isn't violent either?

That's what I said, too... The katana and sais were ok, but the nunchuk wasn't?? Oh well, I'm not gonna bother rationalizing that... :)

Maybe they just compromised and decided to only alter Michaelangelo's weapons. If that's the truth, then it was for the greater good of the show really.

Yeah....he did have no chucks in nm too....i forgot....and i agree that sais and katana are more violent....but where r kids gonna get them??? i know that i had a pair of chucks when i was a kid....they were plastic with a foam around them and a string connecting them....they looked nice.....and they didn't hurt anyone....now a bo staf is just any big stick like a broom or mop....and u can knock the devil out of ur friends with that....why not change donny's weapon to a "Pink flower??"
Oh just to explaine the quote:
Foot: But the rat had a stick!!
Shredder: ands what did the turtle have a pink flower!!???? - east meets west NT:NM

So, if the 'chucks are too violent, what about the katanas or sais? I'll never know. And they should've at least taken Donatello's weapons away, seeing as it's the easiest for kids to imitate. But when you think about it, a grappling hook could do a lot of damage! :tlol:

Why are 'chucks more "violent" than sai and katana? They aren't necessarily, it's just that 'chucks were/are used by gangs in many countries, and they are also rather easy to make, and conceal. Sai and katana are theoretically harder to get a hold of.
It was the association with gangs that made parents upset.

Unfortunately, this is absolutely true. This is also the reason why foot soldiers don't use real bullets, only lasers, which don't hurt anyone. Even the cool submachine gun sound effects from season 1 were take out in season 2.

Well that didn't seem weird that Foot Soldier robots used lasers like that, but when it came to police men or mere crooks this was pretty ridiculous

That maybe why the foot soiders were robots to begin with. Destroying a robot is no big deal.

But when you think about it, a grappling hook could do a lot of damage!
Laugh all you want, but I know people that are quite skilled with the kaginawa that could make you eat those words.
A 'grappling hook' is just as deadly as a nunchaku or katana, given the right training.

They were possibly worried that they would be to easy to make. Basically two sticks and a chain but a variety of materials could be used for the same effect.
I still find this kind of censorship ridiculous.

The foot were robots so that they turtles could slice into them with no blood. Same goes with Jedi and the battle droids.

Ok... here is the history of mikey's weapons to the best of my knowledge...
The nunchakus became a grappling hook for multiple reasons: first, the nunchaku is much easier to recreate than a sai or a katana. On top of that, I believe that nunchakus do an incredible job multiplying force with little effort just by swinging them around. In addition to that, the whole gang relation is true, it can be seen the whole UK rerelease of TMNT.
In next mutation, the reason for Mikey's weapon change was that it was a low budget show over all and they were not able to have a person trained with nunchakus. This may get some backlash but its much easier to have someone fake swords play than to fake nunchakus, so Mikey got the tonfas.
Now about the foot soldiers, it was so Leo and Raph could use their blades.

Very true, but not the way Mikey used it. The only thing he did with it was he used it to climb and attempt to tie people up. Not exactly effective.

If the parents want to complain about violence why don't they start with the greater acts of violence that's been going on in Iraq or Afghanistan? Something that is actually real, not some fantasy show.

Sheila, it's not that nunchakus are more dangerous, its that it is much easier for a novice to hurt themselves. Any idiot knows not to touch the sharp part of a sword. An idiot won't be able to smack themselves in the face with a bo to serious damage (MAYBE if they were twirling it).
With nunchakus, it is much easier for a novice to swing them around and create enough general force to break their own arm by accident. I believe it takes 80 pounds of force per square inch to break a bone and a nunchaku can easily create twice as much force in the hands of a master.
Also, how many kids have access to a forge and the ability to make their own swords? Not many, right? How many kids can get rope and two pieces of wood? A lot more. Kids will imitate what they see and it is easiier to make a set of nunchakus than a pair of swords. Now kids never see Leo hitting himself with katanas, but Mikey would do tricks with the nunchakus that looked like he was hitting himself. Sound like a problem?

or Mikey does tricks that if you try to imitate you'd end up hurting yourself.

I was going to mention the fact it's so easy to break bones wiht nunchuks, and the fact the don't look near as powerful as they are, but he kinda got that before me, just like the fact it's hard for a kid to get thier hands on an actual sword or sai. Anyway I too think it's more due to gang invovlement. My mother and sisters say that DnD is evil and forbid me from it, simply from game involvement that's happened in connection to it in the past. It makes just as much sence to me that parents of little kids would act the same over a weapon on a cartoon show -.- not that I think it's sencable, but I can totaly see thier reasoning for doing that.

I guess with all that's going on in the world, Mikey's 'chuks won't finally be censored anymore...admitedly I dunno what can happen, but at least it likely won't seem to happen this time.
Argh, nothing useful to contribute. Though I have terrible thoughts of what Hyper Metal Sonic described. :dead:

in the original TV series, lots of parents and teachers complained that the kids would imitate the TMNT so the TV series had to have softer violence in it. in some episodes, you would see Mikey with his nunchucks but then you see the grappling hook. also, in the majority of the episodes in the later seasons, Mikey had his nunchucks in his belt.
I have been told that the British tv series did not allow Mikey to fight due to censorship.

Yeah, In Britain, they renamed the TMNT Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles because in they believe that ninjas are evil and kids should not be watching that. That is why they would not let Mikey fight, because hid weapons were widely used by ninjas and such. And the new uncut version of the 1st movie that came out there is just the same here in the US except it has some scenes that got cut out due to what I explained above, such as the scene where Mikey is having that chuck contest with that foot.
