As I've never read this comic could someone please tell me which turtle is which? They are hard to tell apart in those weird costumes.

How long did he keep the black costume afterwards?

Raph kept em for like... maybe 10 issues? Later in the ep that Shredder returned, a dude in robes came in and beat the snot out of the Shredder, revealing himself to be Raph, back and in his original red bandana look.

If I remember right, Raph stayed in the "alien costume" longer than the other turtles stayed in their wrestling outfit. He never turned into Venom, though.... :tsweatdr:

Issues #6-8 were what really got me into the Archie series.

Those costumes were pretty cool looking.

I remember when Raph finally went back to the old colors, he seemed to have a lot more edge to his fighting style. He single handedly took down Shredder and seemed to become the focal character of the writers. They always gave him the best lines and illustrations.

the outfit that was on Donnie was an idea from Eastman and Laird in the original series but it never happened until the Archie series.

Here's the story as I know it. In issue #10, Raph decided he wanted to be unique from his brothers, so he decided to wear the wrestler outfit. By the time they met up with Jagwar and Dreadmon, he was getting kinda tired of it, so he started wearing it only from the waist down. By issue #17, he had converted the outfit to a pair of shorts and found and old denim jacket that he wore. When they finally got back home in #19, he was back in his regular duds again.

little fun fact!

if you check on the official page (its on there somewhere), you'll here peter talk about how, when they created the turtles, they originally thought of having them each with a unique costume, but decided instead to go with red wraps on all 4 turtles.

those orginal costumes are what you see on the cover :)

That's pretty cool. I remember getting the book and tape version of issues 1 and 2, which was the comic book adaption of "Return of the Shredder". I guess they weren't aloud to use the voice actors from the show since they were under contract with Fred Wolf Films.

That was the very comic that introduced me to my man Jim Lawson.

If my memory serves me right (I also have the comic in question as a back-up), they got the wrestling costumes back in Issue #37, after they meet up and are joined by Ninjara, meet Al 'Falqa (hope I wrote that right), got the Black Stone of Mecca back from the Shredder and Verminator-X, met up with Cudley the Cowlick whilst they, Ninjara and Master Splinter were hicking across the desert (originally enroute to subtropical Africa, but got sidetracked by Cudley), and wound up at Stump Asteroid, where the guys wound up wrestling each other, only to face Cryin' Houn', who was in a corny disguise going by the name of El Mysterio and saying his name over and over in Spanish (or at least, I THINK it was Spanish. If there are any Spanish-speaking members out there, help me out here, okay?). Anyway, the shocker of THIS issue was that DONNIE won the whole shootin' match (as we say here in my neck of the woods. Heh) by beating Raph (who, incidently, beat Leo, who beat Mikey), and THEN beating El Mysterio (AKA Cryin' Houn' in disguise, like I said at the start of this post). What really tickled ME was the thoroughly flabbergasted, "I can't believe this is happening!" look on Raph's face when Donnie pinned him to the mat. All-in-all, a good read. I highly recommend it.

They got the costumes much earlier than that. The competition you're talking about was their second trip to the Stump Asteroid.

I remember owning exactly one issue of the Archie series when I was growing up. I was really into the old cartoon series, and had recently just seen the first movie. I had not really cared for the first movie back then, because my child logic had deducted that it would be exactly like the old cartoon. And of course it wasn't. Afterwards, I discovered the Archie series and was all excited because the turtles looked the turtles I was used to seeing on TV. I have no clue what issue I bought, but I do know that Raph was in his dark suit. Of course, I had not read any previous issues to learn about the origins of the dark suit, so I just thought that he had had oil spilled on him (I believe this may have been around the Exxon Valdez spill, mind you). So then I see a section in the back where readers can write in with questions and comments about the comic. So I wrote this letter asking why they had been so mean to Raphael, first making him all angry in the movie, and then spilling oil on him in the comic. I wanted my happy-go-lucky, wise cracking, maybe just slightly moody, non-oil covered Raph! After that letter (I don't know if they ever printed it), I never read another Archie comic again. Needless to say, I have alot of catching up to do.

God, I was a stupid kid. :embarass:

If he's covered in oil, that would explain why Raph is so pissed off all the time

Yes, as shocking as it might seem.... those costumes were part of the original designs that Eastman and Laird did for the turtles.

If fate had rolled the dice a little differently, the TMNT might have been wearing those costumes througout the Mirage series (and still might be wearing them in Volume 4).

Kinda scary, neh??

Wow. I remember that Turtles "Wrestling" cover. Of course, our version had the word "Hero" in place of the word "Ninja", but that's a really old issue from back in 91? 92? not sure if i have that issue, but i remember seeing it on the shelf and in my friend's possession. I know i didn't like those turtle costumes or the storylines in those issues after having a peak inside for a read. I think it was a result of which i decided to stop collecting cos i personally didn't like the direction it was going.
