I was browsing websites yesterday and I read something about a proposed animated version of Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. It was supposibly planned after the live action series ended, but never went into production. Is this true?

I hope not....
it'd of probably been worse then the live series...

Yes there was some kind of plan for an animated version of TNM. There was a cell released but only one. It got canned early on I suppose. No big loss... the new show ROCKS!

Yes the new show rocks, but still I would have loved to see a cartoon version of it. :(
By the way, can you point me in the direction of that cell, please?

It wasn't a "cell," it was a lithograph. I have one and can post a pic later this weekend.
I don't believe there was anything more to the animated rumors than just rumors.

Why would they want to do a cartoon version of TNM when it did so badly?

I think they hoped to do one near the beginning of the premeire. TNM did actually score quite alright ratings while on its run.

A cartoon version might have been ok. It was really how the live action show was done that turned it off. Probably would have been much better as a cartoon.

You know how your always saying that bashers should stay out of your threads? (like PR) Well, maybe you should take your own advice. I'm not a TNM fan, but I don't go to every thread on it and mock it or people who do like it, and you and Jarrah going at each other is getting really annoying.

They've got a point....a cartoon TNM might have actualy been better. Mind you I didn't HATE TNM but it's deffinetly my least favorite TMNT thing...and I have the anime...so that's kinda saying a lot...speaking of which it's been a long time since I watched that. @.@
Okay, I have heard that a cartoon version of TNM had been tossed around as an idea. I guess they felt that the show would do better in animation than live action. After all, look at the quality of the live action suits and such. In animation, they could at least make it *look* a little better.

It would have been interesting to see a cartoon with those character designs. But it kind of makes them look somewhat like generic super heroes for some reason. Venus' design doesn't exactly fit in with the other turtles. She is way to skinny compared to them and looks anorexic. It would have been nice if this was on the years that TMNT was off the air.

Well not as big or muscular as the other turtles but a little bigger than she is there.
TNM probobaly would have made a better cartoon we can't say that it would have suck because it was never made into cartoon only live, Heck I know I would have watch just because it was TMNT.

Amen. This looks really good. I wish they HAD done a NT:TNM animated cartoon. I think it would've been pretty good...even with Venus in it.
*pause* Where did you find this litho, anyway? I wouldn't mind tracking one down and getting it myself. Make a great ddition to my collection.
And may I make a suggestion? I can tell that this is a VERY large picture, but rather than laying it on the floor to take a piccy of it ('cause it's obviously WAY too big to fit on a scanner), why not prop it up against something, like a chair or a desk or even a wall? That way, you could see the whole thing better and straighter. Wouldn't look so odd-angled. Just a suggestion.
And to answer someone else's question, that DEFINITELY looks like Kevin Eastman's autograph/signature in the lower right-hand (to us) corner. Looks like he MIGHT have approved of a CARTOON version of NM. We may never knowm, though, I guess.............

This is the story as far as I remember it.
Next Mutation didn't go to a second season because the powers that be deemed that the show was too expensive. So Kevin Eastman wanted to do an animated series, since that would be cheaper to produce. How far it got beyond that idea is unknown.
Rose's lithograph there, if I remember correctly, was given away to people who changed their phone companies at the San Deigo Comic Con. I'm not even sure if it actually has anything to do with the proposed animated series. I think that two different news stories coming out of the con may have gotten crossed. But I wasn't there so I'm not sure.
Besides that, the image of the turtles there is based on Micheal Dooney's design artwork, upon which the Next Mutation costumes and action figures and all sorts of merchandise were based. It's not really an original picture. Besides that, it looks much too detailed to be an actual animation character design. However, it's a damn cool picture regardless.

I can see why Saban would prefer making a cartoon version of The Next Mutation, as stated doing the live action show was very expensive and he had other more profitable shows (such as Power Rangers)
It would've been substantally cheaper going for an animated version. There were even rumours of Disney turning Power Rangers into a cartoon for US audiences when they bought it back in 2001 due to the ever increasing costs of doing live action.
As for the image posted, while I can't say for certain that could've just been promotional artwork Saban made to promote the live action show. They've done that for other live action Saban shows such as Mystic Knights and Power Rangers (i.e used drawings of the live action characters since it's cheaper then getting the people in suits to pose for the camera). The 'cartoon' Next Mutation images are even used on the Fox Kids Europe sites.

Well... If I think about it... a cartoon TNM would have been pretty good... I mean, Venus would probably work better in animation... sort of... I still do not like her.
A lot of things can be done better in animation than in live action, and well... you can't see zippers on suits in cartoons, now can yah?
The new series is the tops, and more superior than a TNM type show, but it would have been fun to see one episode... guess they could have shoved Bebop and Rocksteady in there too.
