I had one of those, they said a couple of different things by sliding different strips through their shell. I don't remember what they said though. Probably cowabunga and stuff like that.

Are you guys talking about those figures that looked like they had smoke detectors on their backs?

Those were evil hell spawn. They never said anything, just made some buzzing noises.
"fvvvvvvvrrrrraaaaavvvvv" is about all they said.
If they bring 'em back, they should just use sound chips. Besides, I lost all the little red strips in a day. >_>.
Bwahahahahaha! I picked up all four of those a couple years ago at a flea market. Strips and all (though there was a minor weapon mixup.)
I don't use them often, but I had the technique down last time I used them. Funny thing is that there's something wrong with my Raph, because his "voice" is a much higer pitch than all the others.

I never got a chance to get those. The only talking toy I have is the Venom that got pulled off of the shelves because one of the phrases he says is "I want to eat your brains". Parents complained and the toy dissapeared pretty quickly. That was many years ago(possibly 10 maybe more).

I was supposed to get that Venom toy the week it was pulled.

The figures themselves didn't have anything programmed into them. The way they worked was that the large shell on their back was a plastic speaker. You then had the quip stripes which were plastic strips with raised ridges along one face. When they were pulled though the shell, the ridges made the speaker viberate to should like a voice. Of course, as many people have already mentioned, until you find the perfect speed to pull, they sound horrible. As for the quotes on the strips, most were things such as cowabunga, let's kick shell etc....

So I'm guessing that the strips were interchangeable and that they could say each turtles' phrases.

Yup.
You could even run your fingernail down the strip and it would "talk."
*drags out her strips* Each turtle came with three strips. Not sure which came with which, since I have them all mixed up now.
I've got:
4 Kowabunga (Yes, that's how it's spelled on the strip)
HA HA HA
Pizza Time
Rock N Roll
Let's Party
Chill Out
Kick Some Shell
Totally Awesome
Hi Yeah!
And yeah, they're all interchangable.

Talking Tuiurtles would be cool if they surfaced again... of course, with much better digital technology, we'd actually HEAR what they're sayin'!
I remember my cousin had some Marvel toy or something (forget which one) and it said, "Take your best shot!' but it sounded MORE like "Kicky boob shot!" He also had a Spiderman pinball machine (table top sized cheap one) that said "Spider sense tingling" but it sounded more like "How much is penguin!" both of them sounded like, as Mr. Potatohead said in Toy Story... "Like a car ran over it!"

I got one of those when they came out...I think it was the Michaelangelo one (I sold it a long time ago). I dunno, I never played with it much and a few strings got bent up I think. Not the best idea ever but at the same time I don't hate the idea behind them either. The phrases were kinda garbled...but I kinda wish I could pull a string through one of those again and hear a phrase, hehe :goofygri:
