Who do you think is the best TMNT artist and what do you like about their work?

Easy. Eastman & Laird together.

Eastman and Laird or Todd McFarlane. Sure, he only did one piece, but it's still amazing.

Which issue did Tod McFarlane do?

He just did one drawing of Michelangelo, not a whole issue.

I personally like A.C. Farley's work the best because I think that his work looks very realistic and just very awesome in general. Also is this guy I saw on the internet named Tom Kyzivat. Check out his TMNT stuff here:

I'd have to say Eastman and Laird when they were working together...and the Dreamwave guy, LeSean. He can really make good action scenes, even thogh they're SHORT!!! Lawson's old stuff (Return to New York) was great too. It felt kinda psychotic in a good way.

Definitely Dan Berger did the best TMNT art. Talbot and Farley are also awesome.

Michael Zulli is the best artist who has worked on the book, but that's in reference to his entire catalogue of works, not his TMNT books. The Last Temptation, anyone?

Eastman & Laird all the way! Michael Dooney was ok but he drew the turtles too bulky (I think that the turtles start to look ridiculous when they are drawn TOO muscular! They are ninja... not goon type muscle men!). Jim Lawson on the other hand would probably be one of the worst. I say this because his style looks too crude and rushed, like as if his heart isn't in it when he draws them.

My favorite is Pat Lee. Sure he didn't do much, but what he did do looked great.
For those of you who don't know he did a variant cover for the 1st issue of the dreamwave series, which later became a lithograph.

Well, my favorite would have to be Michael Zulli. I really really like his TMNT stuff. A very close second is Laird and Eastman.

But those 2 teams are so different, its kinda like apples to oranges.

Yes, it's difficult to understand why Peter Laird keeps Jim Lawson around after all these years (maybe it's because he's simply reliable?). It's even more difficult to believe that to this day, Jim Lawson still draws very ameturistic. One would think he would spend all those years with Mirage Studios training to become a better, profesional illustrator. I used to think he was great untill my artistic abilllities exceeded his in my mid teens. I'm positive that there are many other artists in this forum that are more capable than Jim Lawson. Sorry if I simply seem to be bashing him, I just get upset when Mirage Studios releases comics with poor quality art work in it. I guess it's because I'm an artist that my standards are quite high.

Well, I actually like Lawson's work. Granted, I agree with some of the comments that've been made about Lawson's style -- that it looks sort of "amateurish" -- but that's probably what draws me to it. It's simple, his people look sort of goofy (which I like, and I think his April is kinda hot... :goofygri:), and his Turtles look pretty good, I think. I loved his versions of Leatherhead and Tokka. Admittedly, his Rahzar was kinda lame, but for the most part I've been pleased with his work. And he drew Tales of the TMNT #7, which is one of my favorite TMNT comics (and again, Renet = h0t). So yeah, Lawson is A-OK with me. :D

That comic that Matt Howarth wrote and drew was really awesome too -- I'd probably pick him as my favorite TMNT artist if he'd done more issues. :)

Oh man....I can't say I have one singular favorite TMNT artist. They have all done some seriously killer work. I do like the "serious" stories and art more than the "campy/comedic" ones, But I enjoyed every issue in Volume one. Zulli's Turtles in the "souls" Trilogy inspired me to try my hand at a "realistic" approach on more than one occassion, But I can't label one artist as a favorite. Even the Image TMNT artist Fosco did an awesome job as far as I'm concerened. His Turtles reminded me of A.C.'s Turtles, But With a different styling. (I know that made no sense.)

Definitely Michael Dooney, and Chris Allan's later stuff (I'm so impressed with his ability to improve over the course of most of the Archie run). Eastman and Laird of course, they were the masters.

I hated Lawson's stuff, but I don't believe he is an amateur. Return to New York proved he could do his stuff. BUT I do believe he has a personal style and that style I don't like. That is all. :)

Sorry for my last post. I just had to get that of my chest. I understand that while Jim Lawson's art abillities isn't as strong as most others, There are many who adore his style. I'm pretty sure that he's a very cool guy when you get to know him. Please understand that I didn't mean to attack him. I was just stating my personal observation.

BTW, Michaelangelo, if you would like to see a comic of mine, I'll try to post it on the Technodrome Fan Art/Fic. It's just a TMNT Fan comic (aprox 24 pages). I plan to put my own comic ideas in production eventualy... I'm just too busy with school, right now.

No problem. One thing I suggest, is that if it's possible on your system, when you go back to retry to send the message, before hitting send again, go up to the link for whatever forum you're on, Comic Discussion in this case. Right click and hit "Open in New Window", or the equivilant. This way you can see if your post went through without losing the post if it didn't.

BTW, I'd love to see your comic. I just posted my own up last week.

I read your comic. It's very good! I like your art style and the way you layed out the panels. You are a talented artist! It's true to the NT series. Do you have any more? :thyper:

As for my comic; I'll start scanning it. It's a comic I made back in 1997, so the art isn't really all that amazing. Still, I hope you enjoy it.

Actually, ya, speaking about the more recent TMNT artists, Ross Campbell is pretty good. But my favorite IDW artist so far has got to be Ben Bates! His stuff has so far been my favorite in all of IDW, especially during the Krang/Neutrinos issues. I kinda wish he was the regular artist for the entire run, with those exact same designs he was using during that arc. Personally speaking.

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird (Neck and shoulders better than all artists in my book)
A.C. Farley (I always loved the way his turtles looked... squinty eyes and all. He just had some beautiful and distinguishable art.)
Dan Duncan (His early turtles though. There was something I loved about his turtles that just connected with my ideal vision of how the boys would look like only taller.)

Easily Ken Mitchroney. Most TMNT artists can barely draw decent looking humans, much less decent mutants. Mostly due to trying to make everything look like squares. Ken Mitchroney keeps things round and cartoony. I always enjoy his issues of Adventures even if the story is lacking.

Also, I'm about half way through the IDW comics (Just got to the annual) and really, really, wishing some of the micro-series artists could be full time artists for the series. The main series' art is awful. It's the only complaint I have of the series.

Again, there are more current versions of this same thread. Do some better research. Half the artists people may list now weren't even in the business when this thread was made.

All-time of course would be Kevin Eastman, but Mateus Santolouco is doing a nice job with City Fall. Nice detail for both mutants and humans, yet cartoony enough to keep it entertaining.

Michael Dooney was the best Archie artist that brought the "OT in comic book form" to its best.
