View Full Version : Why are we all TMNT fans?

Ever sit and think about why? our reasons have to be more than just "cause I watched it when I was a kid."

They're characters at everyone can relate too (almost every personality is represented) and they have some realistic problems that we can all relate too as well. I think most people can relate to isolated alone at one time or another for example. There's good action too, which alot of people like.

1) The characters are awesome. Each turtle has their own distinct personality, and humor. I believe Splinter is even more unique than the turtles in his background story and such.

2) I like long series with continuity. We have awesome comics books, a great new animated series, a classic animated series, lots of video games... it just makes for a great hobby and time filler.

3) Leonardo. Leonardo. Leonardo. Did I mention... Leonardo? He is my favorite character, and I see a lot of myself in him. He is not perfect by far, but he tries his best and puts in maximum effort into everything he does.

4) I am a sucker for martial arts. Using the body as a weapon and in such an artistic form is amazing to me. But it is more than that too. Martial arts isn't just about fighting, its about dedication, and hard work, and finding balance, and many other things Splinter has told the Turtles. I like how this show points that out.

I like the TMNT mainly because I a HUMONGOUS fan of martial arts. Since Tigershard already stated the reasons, I won't repeat them. Second, In each turtle, you can see 4 popular types of teenagers every teen can relate to:

-Frustrated, rebellious teenagers (Raphael)
-Leader types(Leonardo)
-Curious, inventive types(Donatello)
-Creative, fun-loving types(Michelangelo)

Also, the TMNT are alone in the world, like most teens who think they are. Not to mention as they grow up, they meet a lot of interesting characters.

I love 'em because they stand for something and I can relate to them. Super heroes of any kind fascinate me, but I guess being a teenager myself when I "met" the turtles, I can really relate to them so much more, and they're just so...cool!

Because I identify with the main characters (mainly Raph and Mike), I'm into martial arts, the shows/movies/books/games are entertaining, and because I feel like it.

because it has
-good storylines
-kick ass action
-humor
-characters i can relate to.

First, I really enjoy the themes in the show. As nonhumans hiding/trying to survive in a human world. Gargoyles, another of my favorite shows also had this theme.

The main characters are easy to relate to, and make you feel like they're people, instead of just characters (in the right mediums, of course.)

Action, humor, drama, and excellent balance. Good characters, good story, good look. Plus, I've always been drawn towards martial arts, specifically weapons, and reptiles.

And of course, all the great fans. :D

I dropped the TMNT around the time that Dregg crap started and moved on to other things.

I didn't get back into them until the new cartoon airred on Fox. It was so surprisingly good, it drew me back into the universe.

So it's a combination of fond memories and love of the incredibly well-produced new series.

Like others said, I can relate to them. I love reptiles. I think they look damn cool. They're funny, and clever..'course I know that's all in the writing....and I always liked that martial arts stuff..
And Raph is cute! haha!

And Raph is cute! haha!
*drools over the 1st movie Raphael pics Buslady has* If only he were my secret admirer and left funny drawings pinned to my wall with shuriken when I'm away from home during the day.... :tlove:

Oh, the Turtles bring me excitement with their adventures and Ninjutsu action. They got cool allies and villains. I like seeing things from each Turtle's perspective. The Turtles' humor is great. 1st movie Raphael is awesome through and through especially with the trench coat and fedora hat on! :tanime:

Situations where violence is the answer: THAT'S why!

I do like the characters too--some more than others. It's their interaction with each other that's really entertaining. The characters reflect each other, in a way.

I agree with all you people. The Ninja Turtles are one of my favorite superheors too. Like many, the new show brought me back into the fad I missed out all these years. Now with the first season of the orginal cartoon, I can show many friends who never seen the original, what made the heros so popular back in the 90's.

Don't get me started! There is so much to say! Luckly, pretty much everybody here has pointed out the obvious reasons. Along with all that, I would like to say it's because they're not really super heroes. No tights. No cape. No secret identity. They are very much like reguler teens who happen to be ninja and turtles! How refreshing is that! Plus, Shredder is one of the coolest vilians EVER! :shredder:

Well for all the reasons listed above, and:
I love Turtles! Sea turtles are amongst my fav creatures. I also love Martial Arts. Combine those 2 with well-written, in depth characters, with sexy voice actors (raph), whats to lose?

The old show was great when I was a kid, then there were/are comic books, and the new toon just totally rocks! I love the epic-like episodes.

Did I mentioned they are bad@$$?

It is so hard to find the real reason why I devote a portion of my life to these guys, but one of the reasons is psychological. The TMNT came at a time when I was looking for guidance in not my parents, but in heroes who taught me how to deal with hardships. Although, because they have a bit of that parental sense, I also fear them. I don't know why, but I've had days where I want to be close and held by one of them, and then there are other days where I have to run as far away as possible! Can anyone explain that? I'm still trying to figure it out...

Well, it's a kind of strange story for me. I had a thing for Next Mutation when I was in third or fourth grade...(can't remember.) The original toon was off the air by the time I got around to watching television.

I knew about them, but I never really was interested...until one day last year, I was channel surfing. And there was Notes From the Underground, part one. I remember sitting there, trying to figure out which was which. I thought Leo was Donnie and Raph was Mikey. Go figure. So I watched it the next couple days. And sloowwly sloowwly getting sucked in.

Then, BAM! I'm a ninja turtles fan.

Took me another three months to decide who was my favorite.

Plus I've always had a thing for mutants. I went through an X-men faze. I still like them, but not as much. My mom puts it this way, when I mentioned I liked TMNT:NM when I was younger. She says that it wasn't just a faze. I really and truly liked it. Like when people like a color, and people say it's a faze, but it's really not.

Okay, I'm not making sense anymore.

Well, for starters, my grandfather was the one who got me hooked on the show...and I believe I was still just a baby when he introduced me to them :D , and I thank him from the bottom of my heart for bringing the TMNT into my life.

I'm still a hardcore tmnt fan...as most of you know, my fav turtle if Donatello :toops: heheh...(also on a sidenote...I'm a huge fan of the Swat Kats...*points to sig*)

.....don't mind me....heheh

Just a little question, though...why do some people hate Venus? I thought she was pretty funny for being the only girl turtle on the show...

I grew up with TMNT ever since I was a child. Fad went out for awhile around 1993 and I got into SK and loved Razor...found out that Razor and Don were voiced by the same guy..and eventually my interest went back into TMNT LOL

I dunno, I watched the old toon when I was little . . . it went off the air and I sort of forgot about it. Then they come out with the new toon, with anime inspired art, and it's general badassness. I watch off and on for a while, then they get to the more scifi-ish eps with the Triceratons and the Fugitoid and I'm hooked.

Yeah, I know most Turtles purists don't care for the whole 'Turtles in Space' thing, but I liked it. It was different from the formula the show was following up until then, and I thought that was great.

Being able to relate to the guys is a big reason. I relate sometimes way too much with Raph; some issues he suffered I relate with like the whole outsider feeling of not belonging and being a loner. Just one of many.

wow i didnt realise how old this post is! hahaah i replied eons ago oh well haha

I love them for 3 reasons:

1) Turtles are my favorite animals! I have a pet red slider named Terri (short for terrapin :P ). She's such a cutie. I would have named her mikey cause she eats alot but duh she a girl..

2) The stories are fun, original and full of butt-kicking ninja action! They are the best comics I've read!

3)The turtles have characters and personalities that many can relate too. Splinter is like a father to all. I like Leo's character the best. He is sooooo awesome :D I wish I can meet a guy that is like Leo

LONG LIVE THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES!!!!

I have 4 red ear sliders...Raph, Mike, Tokka And Casey :-) Raph is my largest, he's a boy and right now 3.5". Mike's 3" and the other two are around the 2" mark. Raph and Mike, since I know they're both guys, will get around 7" or so. I hope the others are boys, I can't deal with girls..they get HUGE!
How big is yours? Ya sure she's a she?

Just a little question, though...why do some people hate Venus? I thought she was pretty funny for being the only girl turtle on the show...Normally, I try to avoid being a Venus-bashing out of respect for those "fans" who liked her but since someone asked I will answer. Because her character sucked! The whole magic crap was retarded! The fact that she was able to do in one meeting/fight/conflict whatever you'd call it what the other 4 turtles couldn't do in their entire lives, defeat shredder. She was a freaking cry baby. There are numerous other reasons she sucked but to keep venus-bashing to a minimum that's enough of an attack on her character.

But even if she had been designed and written to be an amazing character she still would have sucked because she just doesn't belong. Adding a female turtle took away from the other turtles' personalities. It deminished their uniqueness and originality, thus lessing their characters. Plan and simple, she is gone and honestly never should have existed in the first place.

The comics and the cartoons are great. Kevin and Peter did a great job bringin' the characters to the comics and the movies. The villains aren't your typical thugs which is good thing. I also the TMNT cuz of the other characters and the acting in the first movie was great. The writing for the new and old comics really makes you wanna read till your done with the comic IMO. The new toon is greater than anticapated. The toys are really worth collecting and the vintage figures made me was one of things that made me a fan. Its just so rad!

I'm gonna say it: I watched it, when I was younger and I loved the cartoon. When it was canceled, I thought "Oh well, no biggie..."

In the meantime, I grew very fond of Nin Jutsu and was honestly shocked when I saw the ninja turtles again. I think the new one are the best...

There are hundreds of other reasons, which I discovered after watching them for the first time (I'd never seen them on screen, just found a DVD in a store and thought the drawing style was cool. I draw myself), but everyone else has already mentioned them.

I dunno.. I think i've always been obessed with them....

I think it was the fact that they were DIFFERENT, and I always wished that I could be like them, and be part of their family, because it was so much more interesting than my current life.

I love the way they interact with each other.. they're so different from each other, yet they have that closeness... they'd support eahc other no matter what... I think as the younger silbiling who never had a "brother" to grow up with (i only had an evil older sister) I envied them..

Of course, the fact that they knew Ninjistu kicked ass

I really relate to Mikey when I'm exicted or really happy. When I'm angry I relate to Raph. Casey Jones is the character I would most wanna be like cuz I all the equipment but I don't be a vigilante or bounty hunter until I learn to drive. The writin' for most of the Old Toon seasons was creative. I liked on A Thing About Rats how Shredder found Baxter Stockman and how the Turtles had to fight the Mousers. That was so rad!

But I am a Raphael Fan :x

*waves to the other Raph's Girl*

Why am I a TMNT fan??? I'd like to blaim er thank my parents for that... when I was 6 (waaay back in 1986...didn't know what comics were till 1987 when my mom introduced me to Archie comics :P) we were living in Texas. My parents saved a turtle from being run over by cars (it was in the middle of the road). This started my obsession with turtles in general. We kept it for a couple days (while I did some research on turtles in the library...well hey...I was 6 and just loooved to read! ).... I took the turtle to school for show and tell and durring lunch we released him back into the wild. :D

When the series premiered in 1988 (I was in Germany...everything was slow to air on AFRTS :P) I got hooked on it right away cuz it was a show about turtles! I also gained a crush on Donatello...altho my crush on Raphael got bigger and bigger till it became the obsession it is today.

Donatello is still cute IMO but Raph is a major hottie....

Everybody in my family are TMNT fans.... My mom's a major Michelangelo fan, my dad's a Leo fan, and my step-dad claims Donatello as his hero.

Probably I like the TMNT because of their sense of humor and their personalities. And the fact that they're not humans.

I wasnt the biggest fan of the show after a while. it changed. i think after the second season. but then i was introduced to the mirage comic. and wow. i fell in love. so my main liking of turtles comes from the comicbook.

Err...don't bash the original series in any way, it's against the rules.

And it was FAR from "dumb" after Season Two

Well...this was reported, but I don't really see any kind of major problem here. Yes, old series bashing is against the rules, but opinions about it aren't. Just don't go on a hate spree, and Zarius...don't bait him...or whatever...not that you did do it, but it got reported so I have to say something.
