so - what do you think of the turtles? what would you change? do you wish a differant company made them; exp. mcFarlane or Star Wars style?
peronally - first set, except shredder and april, was dead on. The new shredders nice, he looks more like a samurai. April is just boring - she should be like Anne Hall, but with more curves - a hip suit, and brown eyes. And Erma should be the cute nerd, or like Daria.
He-Man is the best update, they mantianed the original designs, but made them more modern, design and color. The attitude matched the sculpting. Guys like Odo was like the turtles, but guys with guns like trapjaw are full of details; although that be a bit to much.
The old charecters are gone. I want to see Rock Steady, Bebop, Ratking and all the weirdos like Scumbug, Baxter, Muckman - those guys should be full of detail and ripped up, but if they made them they'd be all smooth.
I'd make Rocksteady look like a Gangsta wrapper, Bebop should look like one of the Misfits. I'll post pictures of my designs.
Anyway, whats your call.
Yeah, I'm gonna be the Simon Cowell of this board.

Um do you mean Hun, cuz He-man is deffinetly the wrong toy line. I love this line, aside from the variants and Baxter, it is a dream come true. Actually we have a real baxter so Its only the variants that bug me!

The remake is awesome - stand a new turtle next to an old school one and you;ll appreciate the difference. I also like how they are giving a wide variety of villans/neautral characters, not just heaps of Turtle repaints/lines. Naturally there will be more of teh green four cause they sell, no matter what gear they're wearing but so far Playmates have tread the line between pleasing the market and doing good business very well.
I'll agree with you mobile, that I would love to see the 4 HorseMen give the He-Man revial treatment to the Turtles - can you imagine!?!?!! :o

I think he was comparing the turtles revamp to the Masters of the Universe Revamp.

I just want more mutant animals in the toyline. :(
I'm not saying as many as the old toyline had, but just throw like 6 or so into the mix for good measure, I always loved seeing all the new figures & stuff when the original line came out. In this new line, it's severly lacking in the "cool toy-only secondary characters" department. :x
The old TMNT Role-Playing game done by Palladium games in the 80's (based on the comic book, waaay before the show came out) was revolved around mutant animals. You'd roll randomly on a chart, & "mutate" an animal into your character. The book even had adventures inside to follow, & almost all of them had something to do with mutant animals (even a group of 4 mutant bear cubs with psionic powers called "the Terror Bears", which I guess was a goof on the Care Bears  ).
Point I'm trying to make is, if that RPG, which was based on the old comic books (just like the new cartoon show & toyline is), could have mutant animals in it without seeming stupid or tacky, why can't the new toyline do the same? :-? You might say: "Well, all the figures need to be on the show to get made- they can't make a figure that hasn't been on the cartoon show!", but that's an exception, not a rule I think.
Look at the old toyline- they made dozens of different mutant animals & alot of them were never even on the old cartoon show. Scale-Tail, Antrax, Dr. El, Wyrm (I think...) & a few others were made as toys, but never as in-show characters. Plus, in the new toyline they've done this too. That Foot Gunner toy was based on the character in the TMNT video game, & never even appeared on the cartoon until most recently. Same with that "Turtle Bot" I think, & that Giant Mouser which as far as I know hasn't yet appeared on the show.
I dunno, maybe I'm asking too much of Playmates to make things like they used to be. The old toys sold well, I just assume kids still like animals & mutant animals would also factor into that. I mean, it worked with me & I bought TMNT stuff back when I was a kid...

All very awesome toys/characters duder. :) Though, like you said, if they re-made them they'd be all smooth since all the toys are designed to look like their cartoon show counterparts, which is weird to me as the old TMNT toyline had toys that didn't look like anyone on the cartoon. Even the "Toon Turtles" looked more like cartoons then the cartoons did! :o
That's one of the major things I'm dis-liking about this new toyline- the lack of detailed sculpting. The old TMNT toyline had a crazy sculpting team. They'd put insane detail into their stuff, like General Tragg or Muckman. You ever take the time & look at all the little critters crawling around on those 2 figures? It's insane! :o Playmates should have a "Super Detailed" assortment & get those sculptors back again, they were awesome. :)

I think Rocksteady (the rhino man) was more of a military punk then a street Gangsta wrapper. I could see Bebop being a Gangsta wrapper though, as he's already got that quasi-rap look going. Actually, I think he was just a normal punk-rocker back before he was mutated. Seeing re-vamped versions of the same guys would be cool, as I always liked how Rocksteady looked in the first episode he was in (when he was wearing the military helmet w/ nightvision goggles). He should have had the military theme played up a bit more, like I could see him hiding in the brush spying on the turtles with his nightvision goggles before running in to fight them. Someone on the offical site drew a re-vamped version of Rocksteady & he looked AWESOME.

When I said Rocksteady was a rapper, I meant if I remade it, I'd make him a gangsta rapper. Think about Rocksteady - camo pants, tank top, skull cap (well, with goggles on it). See, he looks like 50 cent. Although instead of a do rag, I'd go for a fedora. Turtles where always a bit quirky.
Then Bebop, he had a chain for a belt and a ring through his nose, it translate well to the goth punk hardcore of the misfits . . . .

this was a bit too "80's", but you get the idea. Reverse the ponyrail, chains, spikes and straps.

I like the new toys but I wish they would come out with some figures that were more angular like LeSean's artwork. I also dislike the lack of mutant animals. Those were the coolest figures in the old line. I understand they are staying with strictly on show characters but the old line had a bit more imagination than this one (at least so far).
I do like the addition of block characters. I always like it when I can have a small little universe of characters in scale with one another like MB is doing with TMNT, PR, and KR.

The new action figures look great! So far, I have Leonardo and all four of the mini turtles. I hope that Playmates doesn't get too silly with the action figures like back then. I mean, the new series is supposed to be more mature and darker than the one before it. Seeing the new scuba diving turtles dissapoints me. These silly action figures may sour people into thinking that TMNT is just for kids. The battle armoured turtles is a suitable idea, though. I think battle dammaged turtles would also be a good idea.

I for one am glad that Playmates havn't repeated themselves by churning out a whole wave of useless characters that also happen to have had a run in with mutagen. I mean if every else is a mutant - what's so special about the Turtles? Part of what makes them unique is the very fact that they are mutants and there is no one else like them! To date the new line has done a good job of providing some non-mutant figures whilst still producing some dynamic and exciting characters. Go Playmates! :D

OH, okay, I getcha now. I've never seen 50 cent that often, so I'm a bit un-familair with how he looks.

Hmmmm....that could work. :) I always thought tha the old Bebop toy didn't look 100% like a boar, & more like a pig with tusks. A new version would be cooler if done well enough.

Yeah, I agree. Lots of stuff went on in the old line, this one seems a bit shy in the cool secondary characters department. I was at TRU on Saturday & I just saw a crap-load of sports turtles, mutating turtles & junk armor turtles. The vehicles aren't too bad, but the line is really only just starting out so maybe things will improve with age? :-?

I was thinking of picking some of those block-turtles up, so I could give their weapons to those mini-TMNT figures I got in a 4-pack a few months ago. I think they're all in scale with each other..

Oh yeah, I also agree with you here. Seeing "Birthday Turtles", or "Sewer Spittin' Turtles" again in this line would seem out of place, as this toyline/cartoon is more based on the old B&W comic book then anything else. It's entirely possible for playmates to make a few more mutant animal characters without going with the silly "Goofy Gargantuan Giraffe!" tag-lines or something.
I for one am glad that Playmates havn't repeated themselves by churning out a whole wave of useless characters that also happen to have had a run in with mutagen.
Well, they don't have to be mutant animals who encountered the same stuff the turtles did. Look at the new Mirage TMNT comic that's out now? That Utrom ship crashed in south America & there's mutant Dinosaur-type creatures & tree people with laser-guns runnin' around, & they most likely were exposed to the same sort of mutagenic compound that the turtles were exposed to.
The old toyline didn't have like every animal in the planet mutated in the same spot. Most of them were either humans who had been mutated with animals, or just normal animals who encountered "strange stuff".
Heck, they don't have to be mutated by the new show's verion of mutagen at all. Here's an excerpt from Palladium's old "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness" Role-Playing game, specifically the "Cause of Mutation" table in the game. They were used when player's would be making up mutant-animal characters, I just took out the percentile numbers & things so you can just see the information:
Cause of Mutation
Option #1)-Random Mutation: This means that the animal just happened to come out like that. For example, in T.M.N.T., Splinter was an unusually intelligent and skilled rat long before the accident that created the T.M.N.T. Roll on the "Wild Animal Education Table" (or just look below).
"Wild Animal Education Table"
• A) Everything is self-taught as the animal lives in the wild with no help or assistance. Character mistrusts humans and other animals. Basic reading, writing and arithmetic are at a low level.
• B) By skulking around the fringes of society the character picks up rudimentary education. The character probably has a small number of human friends but distrusts people in general.
• C) Adopted by a "mentor" who teaches and guides the character in some form of special training. This is often Ninjitsu, but all areas of special training can be selected. These characters will learn to be philosophic about all creatures. Their attitude could be summed up as, some people are good, some bad, everyone deserves a chance to earn your trust.
• D) Character goes public and is educated at a major university. The character likes and trusts humanity in general.
Option #2)-Accidental Encounter: Some "strange stuff", radiation, energy, chemicals, biologicals, or other strangeness, causes the animal to mutate. Roll on "Wild Animal Education Table".
Option #3)-Deliberate Experimentation: Some kind of laboratory experiment is performed on the animal that causes the changes. The animal's structure or genetics were purposely altered for some purpose. Roll & consult the following table to find out the character's current relationship with the creator organization.:
• a) Adopted and raised as one of a researcher's family. Still living in the home, mutually loves and is loved by family members. This character has been treated as a human and, while some discrimination may have been experienced, the character will feel that humans are basically good.
• b) Raised in the home of a researcher as a pet. Still living in the home and fairly loyal to family members. The character will resent humans somewhat, but will still attempt to find acceptance among mankind.
• c) Raised in the home of a researcher as a pet. Escaped and hostile, but not hunted with deadly force. The character will be resentful of humans.
• d) Brought up as an experiment. Trained and educated with cruel punishments. The character will distrust humans.
• e) Raised as a caged, experimental animal. Character escaped and wants to destroy the organization and has a strong distrust (and possibly hatred) of all humans.
• f) Educated and trained as if the character were a normal human. Character has good relationships and balanced outlook on humans.
• g) Rescued from the organization and adopted by a friendly researcher at a young age. Raised while continuously being hunted by the organization. Character distrusts humans but knows that there are some good people who deserve help and friendship.
• h) Highly trained and educated as a specialist using the character's natural abilities. The character feels equal or is equal to a Bachelor's Degree in college.
• i) Highly trained as a specialist using the character's natural abilities. Education is equal to 3 years of college.
• j) These characters have been deliberately raised as assassins or warriors. Character knows and respects some humans but distrusts all large organizations. The character escaped the organization and is now considered very dangerous and is hunted by law enforcement agencies and the organization.
I mean if every else is a mutant - what's so special about the Turtles? Part of what makes them unique is the very fact that they are mutants and there is no one else like them!
Well, that's very true- if there are mutant animals runnin' around does that decrease the turtles "specialness" ? :-? I guess it might depend on how they were mutated? I'd like to think an animal that was mutated in a lab to be a assassin or something would be a bit more unique then the turtles, only in the ways that their origins are different.
Plus, not "everyone else" was a mutant in the old toyline/show. Sure there were a few dozen mutant animals running around, but that's a few dozen out of the entire world population. It's not like there were continents loaded with millions of mutant animals living together in some sort of Utopian society and if such was the case it would tend to bog things down a bit with excess animal-people.
To date the new line has done a good job of providing some non-mutant figures whilst still producing some dynamic and exciting characters. Go Playmates! :D
I dunno, some of the figures seem cool, others not so much. Reducing their articulation since the first wave of figures was a big bummer to me, not to mention a lack of cooler toys. The world of TMNT isn't limited to "TMNT vs the Foot Clan 24-7!". The old Mirage comic book, of which this show & line are loosely based off of, had A LOT more going on then that.
Time traveling people, aliens & robots, mystic stuff, super heroes, etc. The TMNT-verse is rich with ideas for awesome toys & Playmates has yet to truly tap the potential that is there. Look at the "blast from the past" section of the TMNT website & see some of Peter Laird's kick-arse toy ideas he's drawn up. It really bites that Playmates seems to be less "fun" this time around, as the original toyline was awesome.
I just want to see some mutant animals, not dozens upon dozens of them. Heck, they don't have to be mutant animals in the first place. One or two could be "aliens" from a parallel universe where animals are more humanoid, or maybe an alien race like the Triceratons that resemble dinosaurs or some other type of animal. More cool sci-fi type stuff mixed in & I'd be a happy camper. :D
